..Some Rain in Our Future...

If this current spate of nice weekend weather had happened in any
other year, we would almost certainly be celebrating. But given our
current D4 drought status (the worst category), it is difficult to
enjoy. We are guardedly optimistic that some rainfall is in our
future over the next few days, but you have heard that before.
Personally, I will believe it when I see it, but let's get into the
forecast.

SOUTHEASTERLY FLOW INCREASING: A warm and moist southeasterly flow
will begin increasing this morning across our area. Temperatures
will warm into the middle 80s, with a few spots in the upper 80s.
Southeasterly winds will be on the breezy side at about 6-12 mph.
Moisture levels will be on the increase, with dewpoints steadily
rising into the 60s after midnight tonight. As the moisture surges
into the area, showers will break out tonight, generally after midnight.

SIGNIFICANT RAIN IN OUR FUTURE? The GFS, our main global
forecasting model, has consistently portrayed the idea of a cut off
upper level low forming from the strong upper trough over the western
United States by Monday. This position of this upper low will be
important in someone's weather. By Monday morning, the trough will
be over the central part of the nation, pushing a front to the east.
Copious amounts of moisture will be flowing into Alabama from the
south, producing widespread showers and storms over the state.
Hopefully. Strong high pressure to the east will cause the frontal
system to slow down and perhaps stall near our state. If we can get
the rainfall band to stall over Alabama, it could produce some
excellent rainfall amounts. There is a chance that there could be a
couple of strong storms with the system, but the chance looks small
for now. By Monday night, the upper low is expected to form to the
west. If it is over the Arklatex, as is expected, showery, unsettled
conditions will be the rule for Alabama through Wednesday morning, at
least with showers possible through Friday. Thursday looks like the
driest day, with a dry slot over the state. The big trough finally
pushes east of the state by Friday with a cold front bringing fair
conditions for the weekend.

WESTERN SNOWS: Heavy snows will spread across the higher elevations
of the Northern and Central Rockies today as the powerful shortwave
trough traverses that area. Snow levels will drop to near 5,000
feet. A winter storm warning is in effect for the Aspen and Vail
areas, where ten inches is expected tonight along with another four
tomorrow. Lows will be in the single digits tomorrow night. Lesser
snowfall amounts will occur over the San Juan Mountains of
Southwestern Colorado, where my favorite place, Telluride, will pick
up 2-4 inches.

ON THIS DATE IN 1780: Spanish Admiral Solano was enroute from Havana
to Pensacola in October 1780 to capture the important port city.
The third major hurricane of the month swept north through the Gulf
of Mexico catching and scattered the fleet of 64 warships. The
hurricane became known as Solano's Hurricane.

...Good Looking Saturday...

October is usually our nicest weather month, with lots of sunshine
and mild temperatures. Rainfall is at a minimum, which is not a good
thing given our current D4 drought situation.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: High pressure is centered over the southern
part of Alabama on this Saturday afternoon. This high will translate
northeastward tonight and be over the Carolinas by tomorrow. It will
then set up shop off the East Coast. This is a favorite location for
a good southerly flow of moisture for Alabama. The high will
strengthen and anchor itself in place. The trough that brought the
stormy weather from the Great Lakes to the Deep South on Thursday is
moving rapidly to the northeast and will exit the East Coast
tonight. Another trough has moved into the West Coast and will
intensify rapidly as it moves eastward through tomorrow. It will
create a big bowling ball of a cutoff low over the Central Plains by
Monday morning.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND:: With high pressure in control, we
will experience fine weather through tonight and much of the day
tomorrow. You will notice the southeasterly flow increase a bit
tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures will warm into the lower 80s. A
surface trough rotating around the sprawling high will bring more
significant rains to the Gulf Coast by tomorrow night and into
Mississippi and Louisiana on Monday. Some showers will edge into
Central Alabama Sunday night and rain should increase over the
northern half of the state after midnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A cold front will approach from the
west on Monday. With abundant moisture in place over Alabama, rain
and thunderstorms appear likely on Monday. After having been burned
so many times recently, it is hard to get excited about a rain
forecast, but let's keep our fingers crossed. To the west, the front
and moisture will combine to produce intense rainfall over
Mississippi and western Tennessee. The front will move into the
area, weakening as it goes keeping the heavy rain threat to our west,
as well as the severe weather threat. As the front moves slowly
eastward across the state on Tuesday, our rain chances will remain
good. Showers will begin to diminish on Wednesday as the upper low
drops to near Little Rock and a dry slot rotates over our area. A
mostly dry front arrives late Thursday night and high pressure
settles into the Ohio Valley giving us a nice weekend again.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: It was the wettest day ever at the SEA-TAC
Airport in Seattle, Washington as 5.02 inches of rain fell. The
record at Seattle's other historic reporting location was 3.52 inches
at the Federal Building. Extremely heavy rains fell across much of
western Washington. It was the second wettest day in history at
Olympia, Washington, as 4.12 inches fell. Other notable amounts
included 7.20 inches at Shelton and 5.39 inches at Hoquiam. A
conveyor belt of moisture ahead of a stalled cold front caused the
heavy showers that lasted much of the day. The previous record was
set on November 20, 1959, when 3.41 inches fell.

..Welcome Race Fans...

Tens of thousands of race fans are converging on the world's fastest
speedway for a weekend of racing excitement. The weather will be
generally cooperative for the races today and tomorrow. Let's check
it out.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: At the surface, high pressure is centered near
Washington, D.C. Did you see the weather for the Red Sox/Angels game
at Fenway or the Indians/Yankees at the Jake in Cleveland? 80
degrees at nine o'clock at night in Boston? Unseasonably warm
weather in the Southeast. All thanks to this high pressure system,
which ridges all the way down into the Southeast.

THE REST OF YOUR WEEKEND:: A relatively moist easterly flow continues
around that ridge and it is spreading cloudiness into Alabama from
the east. Those stratus clouds are changing into stratocumulus and
eventually cumulus clouds as a still strong fall sun works on them.
A few showers and an isolated storm could form this afternoon.
Humidity levels will continue to be relatively high through the
weekend and temperatures will be warm. Tomorrow will be a lot like
today with a mixture of partly cloudy to cloudy skies and a slight
chance of a mainly afternoon shower or storm. Coverage will be very
small.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The next big player in national weather will be the
very deep upper trough over the Intermountain Region between the
Sierras and Rockies. This powerful system is bringing snow to parts
of the west today. It will swing out onto the Plains, closing off
into a bowling ball of an upper low that will roll toward the Great
Lakes states. It will push a weakening cold front towards Alabama.
It will deliver a shot of showers and storms Monday night into
Tuesday, but starved for moisture, the chances will be low. Drier
air will filter in behind the system, but temperatures will only fall
back to near or just above normal with highs around 80, lows around 60.

TROPICS: Convection flared overnight in the disturbance east of the
Lesser Antilles. But this system is undergoing significant westerly
wind shear and development will be difficult until tomorrow night
when the shear will diminish. It is moving northwest and is no
threat to land. The disturbance over the northwestern Caribbean is
in an area that is favorable for development this time of year. It
is moving west or southwest. The disturbance north of Puerto Rico
shows signs of slow development. If it does develop, it will
eventually move out to sea harmlessly. Only the GFDL believe that it
has a future as a tropical cyclone.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Disastrous flooding continued in central and
southern Mexico as a tropical depression over the Gulf of Mexico
produced torrential rains. The weak storm, barely discernible on
weather maps, dumped very heavy rains, forcing 157,000 people from
their homes and killing at least 66 people.

SIMULTANEOUS DROUGHT AND FLOOD: Certainly an unusual combination,
but that is exactly what we have had in Alabama in the last 48 hours.
There is no doubt the drought is severe. In fact, the Exceptional
drought coverage in Alabama has increased during the past week. It
now covers 73% of the state. That is 14% more than a week ago. As of
this morning, the rain deficiency in Alabama for this year-to-date
was an incredible 27.40 inches at Anniston Airport, 26.13 at
Tuscaloosa and 19.68 at Birmingham. Up in the Tennessee Valley, there
is almost a 24-inch shortage for the year at Huntsville. While we
will have a very nice weekend, we look for another good rain event
for Alabama early next week starting on Monday. Check our day-by-day
forecast for all the details.

We had high hopes that the weather event of the last two days would
at least make a dent in the drought. However, over most of North
Alabama, you can assume that most places got little or no help. This
was an amazing weather occurrence. We normally think that to get huge
amounts of rain this time of the year has to involve a tropical
depression or a tropical storm. Along the Alabama/NW Florida coast,
we got that kind of rain totals without the tropical storm. However,
I still believe that some tropical moisture over the SW Gulf of
Mexico got entrained into this weather system. The rain was so heavy
the last two days along the coast, that flash flooding became a real
problem. It is no wonder, because almost 15 inches of rain fell in 48
hours at Pensacola Naval Air Station and almost 11 inches at Destin
and Ft. Walton. A number of places inland in South Alabama received 3
to 5 inches. The line of thunderstorms that moved across the state
during the night completely fell apart before reaching Birmingham and
the Tornado Watch was cancelled way ahead of time.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: All the coaches for all of the teams could not
have custom ordered any better football weather. High school games
tonight will feature clear cool weather with about 68 at kick off and
62 in the fourth quarter. Light wind. On Saturday, the Alabama/
Tennessee game is at Tuscaloosa at 11:30. Clear with low humidity,
light wind, 75 at kick off, with a high during the game about 80.
Auburn will be in Baton Rouge to play LSU with an 8:00 p.m. kick off.
Clear with 72 at kick off and 62 at the final whistle. UAB/Houston
will be at Legion Field. Clear, 70 at kick off, 60 at final whistle.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The Tropics are very quiet. Big storm on the
Pacific NW coast the last several days with 25-foot swells making
walking along the beach extremely dangerous. A wind gust of 85 mph
occurred at Cape Mears, Oregon. Low temperatures this morning 8 above
zero at Northway, Alaska and 16 at Alamosa, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I hope we do not cause Little Miss
Molly to develop ulcers because we disrupt her routine so much. The
last two days in the Trussville Inn Express (our home) has been so
mixed up. Last night Molly went to bed finally after midnight and
slept until noon today. The majority owner had mixed up hours also
and I was awake almost the entire night and today. When Molly crawled
out of bed this morning, she bounced across the floor like a
basketball. It is a tremendous inspiration to watch her wake up. She
makes my day even if I am too groggy to appreciate it. Life goes on
despite the disruptions. Molly sort of glues it all together......

===================================================================

...Dry Weekend Weather...

DRIER AIR ROLLS IN TODAY: Any lingering showers and storms this
morning will end quickly as drier air moves into Alabama from the
west. Morning clouds will give way to a sunny afternoon sky, with a
high in the upper 70s and lower humidity levels. Tonight will be
noticeably cooler, and by daybreak tomorrow we should be in the 47 to
51 degree range.

The weekend will feature sunny warm days and clear cool nights, and
there is no chance of rain through Sunday. Then, early next week,
another dynamic storm system rolls in here with a chance of showers
and thunderstorms on Monday, followed by a sharp change to cooler
weather during the mid-week period.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tennessee will be playing Alabama in Tuscaloosa
tomorrow. It should be all sunshine with low humidity and light
winds. About 75 degrees for the 11:30 kick off with a high near 80
during the game. Auburn will be in Baton Rouge to play LSU at 8:00
p.m. Clear, comfortable weather with 77 at kick off and in the 60s
during the second half. UAB will host Houston at Legion Field at 6:00
p.m. It will be about 70 at kick off lowering quickly into the 60s.
For tonight's high school games, clear pleasant weather is expected
with temperatures in the upper 60s at kick off and about 62 at the
final whistle. It will be great night for football.

STORMY THURSDAY: A number of tornado warnings over far West Alabama
kept us on the air much of the afternoon yesterday; one small tornado
touched down just southwest of Haleyville with some scattered damage
along Alabama Highway 129, and there was also some tree and power
line damage in Pickens County. A number of reports of wall clouds and
funnel clouds were received late in the day through parts of Greene
and Tuscaloosa counties, but that severe storm weakened as it moved
into downtown Tuscaloosa.

To the south, an EF1 tornado touched down in Pensacola during the
late morning hours, and was responsible for some significant property
damage and at least four injuries, according to the National Weather
Service.

STORM ALERT XTREME: We hope to see you on Saturday, November 10 at
the BJCC for our annual severe storm training session. Once again
this year, the Alabama International Auto Show is a sponsor of Storm
Alert XTREME, and it will be held at the BJCC. This is your chance to
learn more about Alabama weather, and to be trained as a storm
spotter. ABC 33/40 Meteorologist Brian Peters, long time WCM (Warning
Coordination Meteorologist) for the National Weather Service in
Birmingham, will teach a basic and advanced course on spotting small
scale features within thunderstorms that are very important to
meteorologists. After a severe weather day like yesterday, we always
get questions about becoming a volunteer severe weather spotter; this
is your one chance to get trained and get started. There is no cost,
and no need to register. Just show up!

===================================================================

A NICE WEEKEND: We are still reluctant to use the word nice when we
are in the middle of a drought, but after a stormy night, the weather
will improve quickly tomorrow morning and the weekend should feature
mostly sunny weather and much lower humidity, cool early mornings and
very comfortable afternoons.

ABOUT TONIGHT: A cold front is still to our west and it will have to
come through Central Alabama late tonight or in the very early hours
of Friday. A new line of thunderstorms had already formed across
Mississippi this afternoon and were moving into NW and West Alabama.
NWS had issued at least 2 tornado warnings and a new Tornado Watch
was in effect for a number of NW and West Alabama Counties until
11:00 p.m. There may be some other warnings this afternoon and tonight.

We had something happen today that is not that unusual at all.
Numerous showers and thunderstorms moved onshore along the coast in
the pre-dawn hours and persisted a good part of today. This tended to
cut off or block abundant moisture from reaching North Alabama, so
our rain amounts today were not as heavy as we anticipated. However,
there will be some heavy rain amounts along the line of storms as
they cross the area ahead of the cold front overnight. Down in SW
Alabama, Jackson was drenched with well over 4 inches of rain. A
number of other communities received between 1 and 3 inches. In the
NW Florida Panhandle, a lot of places undoubtedly had over 3 inches.
A tornado touched down in downtown Pensacola this morning and caused
spotty, but fairly significant, damage. There was damage at the
city's largest shopping mall. Police reported some cars flipped over
on I-10.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tennessee will be playing Alabama in Tuscaloosa
Saturday.
For Friday night high school games, clear pleasant weather is
expected with temperatures in the upper 60s at kick off and about 62
at the final whistle.

AROUND THE USA: As many as 17 tornadoes reported in the last 24
hours and they were scattered over a rather broad area and some
produced significant damage. One struck downtown Pensacola this
morning. We had a report of 2 fatalities at Paris, Missouri, possibly
from a tornado. More than 40 people were injured in the Tulsa area
while at an outdoor festival and about 25 were transported to local
hospitals.

It has been a busy 24 hours with very little sleep and very little
chance of sleep tonight, but we are used to that and we do not
complain. Life goes on......
