...Good Looking Saturday...

October is usually our nicest weather month, with lots of sunshine
and mild temperatures. Rainfall is at a minimum, which is not a good
thing given our current D4 drought situation.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: High pressure is centered over the southern
part of Alabama on this Saturday afternoon. This high will translate
northeastward tonight and be over the Carolinas by tomorrow. It will
then set up shop off the East Coast. This is a favorite location for
a good southerly flow of moisture for Alabama. The high will
strengthen and anchor itself in place. The trough that brought the
stormy weather from the Great Lakes to the Deep South on Thursday is
moving rapidly to the northeast and will exit the East Coast
tonight. Another trough has moved into the West Coast and will
intensify rapidly as it moves eastward through tomorrow. It will
create a big bowling ball of a cutoff low over the Central Plains by
Monday morning.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND:: With high pressure in control, we
will experience fine weather through tonight and much of the day
tomorrow. You will notice the southeasterly flow increase a bit
tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures will warm into the lower 80s. A
surface trough rotating around the sprawling high will bring more
significant rains to the Gulf Coast by tomorrow night and into
Mississippi and Louisiana on Monday. Some showers will edge into
Central Alabama Sunday night and rain should increase over the
northern half of the state after midnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A cold front will approach from the
west on Monday. With abundant moisture in place over Alabama, rain
and thunderstorms appear likely on Monday. After having been burned
so many times recently, it is hard to get excited about a rain
forecast, but let's keep our fingers crossed. To the west, the front
and moisture will combine to produce intense rainfall over
Mississippi and western Tennessee. The front will move into the
area, weakening as it goes keeping the heavy rain threat to our west,
as well as the severe weather threat. As the front moves slowly
eastward across the state on Tuesday, our rain chances will remain
good. Showers will begin to diminish on Wednesday as the upper low
drops to near Little Rock and a dry slot rotates over our area. A
mostly dry front arrives late Thursday night and high pressure
settles into the Ohio Valley giving us a nice weekend again.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: It was the wettest day ever at the SEA-TAC
Airport in Seattle, Washington as 5.02 inches of rain fell. The
record at Seattle's other historic reporting location was 3.52 inches
at the Federal Building. Extremely heavy rains fell across much of
western Washington. It was the second wettest day in history at
Olympia, Washington, as 4.12 inches fell. Other notable amounts
included 7.20 inches at Shelton and 5.39 inches at Hoquiam. A
conveyor belt of moisture ahead of a stalled cold front caused the
heavy showers that lasted much of the day. The previous record was
set on November 20, 1959, when 3.41 inches fell.
