ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday December 10, 2005
==================================================================
WALK THROUGH NATIVITY
BIRMINGHAM'S BEST FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVENT!
Wed., Thurs., & Fri., Dec. 14, 15, 16 from 6:45 - 8:45 p.m.
Briarwood Presbyterian Church, I-459 at the Acton Road exit

Image yourself a shepherd, pause beside the wise men, or linger in front of
the manger as you walk through one of Birmingham's most poignant Christmas
depictions. Take your time as you stroll along the level, one quarter mile
walk through 10 live scenes with animals.

Afterwards drop by the fellowship hall for coffee and hot chocolate while
the kids enjoy petting the live animals of Christmas.

Early admission for handicapped or nursing home groups driving through:
6:30 until 6:45 p.m., Thursday and Friday nights.

No charge. Information: 205-776-5379 or http://www.briarwood.org
==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: A good bit of the area is experiencing cloudiness on this
Saturday afternoon after a chilly start.

CHILLY START: Temperatures dropped like a rock last night under mostly
clear skies and good radiational cooling conditions. Some representative
morning lows from across the area included:

18 at De Soto State Park
18 at Muscle Shoals
19 in Pinson
19 in Fort Payne
20 in Huntsville
20 in Decatur
22 in Tuscaloosa
22 in Anniston
23 at the Birmingham International Airport
25 at the NWS Calera

GO AWAY CLOUDS: A large area of moisture in the lower levels of the
atmosphere is resulting in the clouds. Across North Alabama, where there
has been a great deal of sunshine, temperatures are still struggling to get
into the middle 40s. Across North Central Alabama, where clouds have been
more prominent, readings were slowly climbing through the lower 40s. Further
south, in Montgomery, where clouds were just moving in, temperatures had
already made the lower 50s. I think the clouds will be swept out to the
northeast tonight ahead of an approaching trough of low pressure. If skies
are mostly clear this evening, temperatures will drop to just below freezing
overnight.

SUNDAY: The trough will deliver a reinforcing shot of cold air to the area
late tonight and tomorrow. Regional radars indicate no precipitation with
this system, and none is expected. Skies may be cloudy at times tomorrow
due to the first trough, and another one that will pass by to the north
later tomorrow. Temperatures tomorrow will top out in the upper 40s.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: We will remain under influence of the upper level trough
into next week with a northwesterly flow aloft continuing on Monday.
Disturbances in the flow may bring additional cloudiness from time to time.
Surface high pressure should dominate our weather starting Tuesday with
mostly sunny skies. Meanwhile, low pressure will be forming well to the
west of Alabama. As it does, a return flow from the south will be setting
up over the Deep South. The low will move to the northeast. It will be a
wet weather system for us, with showers entering the state early Wednesday
morning. While the heaviest precipitation won't last long, showers may
linger into the overnight hours. Thursday should feature clearing and
cooler weather. Clearing may wait until later in the day on Thursday as a
more powerful cold front deeps across the area.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Buffalo was buried under 38 inches of lake effect
snow to set a 24-hour record as intense lake effect snow squalls buffeted
the city. Watertown NY recorded 39 inches of snow in just 12 hours, with
snow falling at the rate of 4 inches of hour for 6 straight hours.

...December Chill Continues...

GOOD MORNING: Another chilly start out there across the fruited plain of
Alabama on this Saturday morning. Temperatures will warm rather nicely
today, reaching 50 or slightly higher in most locations. Overnight lows
tonight will be slightly warmer tonight after a day of southwesterly winds
that will elevate moisture levels over the area.

SUNDAY WEATHER: Skies should be partly cloudy again tomorrow ahead of a big
trough of low pressure that will be swinging across the country. This
trough will propel a reinforcing shot of cool air into Alabama and the Deep
South late tomorrow. This will lead to another cold night Sunday night.

THE COMING WEEK: Sunny and slightly cool weather will prevail on Monday
with high pressure centered near New Orleans. That high will slide eastward
to near Jacksonville Florida by Tuesday morning. This will allow the wind
flow over Alabama to become southerly again. Low pressure to the west of
Alabama will begin to move our way overnight Tuesday night, combining with
the moist flow to bring us increasing chances of showers on Wednesday.
There could be a fairly decent rainfall event across the area on Wednesday
night with showers continuing into Thursday morning. Temperatures will fall
rather quickly on Thursday behind a cold front, but no wintry precipitation
is expected at this time. Skies should being clearing during the day.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Grambling takes on Alabama A&M in the SWAC Championship
Game at Legion Field this afternoon at 1 p.m. Game time temperatures will be
in the upper 40s, rising into the lower 50s during the game, before dropping
back.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Greek Television reported that a shower of tiny fish
rained down on the village of Korona after a strong thunderstorm. Experts
reported that the unexpected bounty was probably caused when a waterspout
picked up the small fish from Lake Doirani.

==================================================================

IT WAS A COLD DAY: Across the northern third of Alabama, temperatures were
still hanging out in the 30s this afternoon. Colder air overspread the
entire state overnight in the wake of yesterday's rain. A lot of places got
about one-half inch of rain and a few spots closer to three-fourths of an
inch. Some of the coldest temperatures this morning included 23 in Muscle
Shoals, 25 in Decatur and Huntsville. Anniston had 31 and Birmingham 27.

With clear skies and little or no wind tonight, we expect temperatures to
drop off into the low 20s across much of Central Alabama. Some of those
traditional cold spots could have upper teens.
We are in for a fairly good stretch of dry weather. Another cold front is
expected to come marching through Sunday morning, but it looks too dry for
any
rain. It will send the temperature back down to the mid 20s Monday morning.
A more decent warm up for Monday and Tuesday as highs reach the 50s.

THE BIG SNOWSTORM: The snow field across the USA has expanded considerably
in the last few days. Most of the country is now covered as far south as
Oklahoma, NW Arkansas and all of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. This means
that NW winds coming off of that snow field will make Alabama's temperatures
a few degrees colder than if the snow was not there. We have to adjust at
times like that. This morning there was 8 inches of snow on the ground in
Indianapolis, 12 inches across much of Connecticut, 18 inches at Savoy,
Massachusetts. A lot of places from Kansas and Iowa east across the Midwest
and into the NE received between 6 and 10 inches. The closest thing Alabama
had to wintry precipitation was a few patches of ice this morning when
temperatures fell below freezing before all of yesterday's rain could drain
off.

BITTER COLD: It continues unusually cold for so early in the season in a
number of locations. The lowest temperature in the whole country including
Alaska this morning was 35 below zero in Gunnison, Colorado. It was 33 below
at West Yellowstone, Montana, an unusually cold 19 below in Colorado Springs
and 32 below in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The SWAC championship game will be in Birmingham's
Saturday at 1:00 p.m. It should be sunny with about 46 at kick off and
topping out near 52 later in the game. Not much wind. Grambling plays
Alabama A&M.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: In that steady rain last night, every time I
carried Little Miss Molly out for a bathroom break, she would make a quick
circle and head back to the door without doing anything. She used to love to
walk in the rain, but seemingly no more. I forced her to stay out a minute
or two until she did her business and then without any prompting whatsoever,
it was zoom back to the door. I did not even have to tempt her with a treat.
I have played with her so much the last three days that she has raised the
bar. The more I play, the more she expects me to play. I really believe she
wouldn't mind playing for five or six hours a day. She never gets tired of
it and she loves to play chase ball endlessly. I guess it is a good way for
her to stay in shape and for me to get out of breath. Life goes on and on
and Little Miss Molly keeps me hopping.

...Sunshine Returns; Colder Temps...

Sunshine returns to Alabama today along with a new surge of cold air coming
off the snow cover across North America. Temperatures will struggle to reach
the low to mid 40s today with a very chilly north breeze. We expect a hard
freeze tonight with a clear sky and diminishing wind. Most spots will wind
up somewhere between 20 and 25 early tomorrow, with the colder communities
reaching the upper teens.

The weekend will be dry, but temperatures will remain below normal for
early December. A fresh supply of chilly air will roll in here on Sunday,
keeping the weather dry and cold into early next week.

NEXT RAIN: Looks like the next chance of precipitation here will come toward
the latter half of next week. There is little agreement among the computer
model runs, but for now it looks like the best chance of rain will come
Wednesday night into Thursday. Temperatures should be sufficiently warm for
all
liquid.

THE LONG RANGE: We still expect temperatures to stay below normal through
the rest of December, not only here in Alabama but for much of the nation
east of the Rockies.

THURSDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals yesterday included .74" at Riverchase, .69" at
Inverness, .62" at Greystone Farms, .52" at Helena, .51" at Leeds, and .44"
at Hueytown.

WINTER WONDERLAND: Five to seven inches of snow fell on Indianapolis
yesterday and last night. Winter storm warnings are up today from West
Virginia to New England, where four to six inches of snow is likely across a
broad area.

TOO COLD: Cold spot in the nation yesterday was West Yellowstone, MT with
minus 45. Denver's low was minus 13.

COLDER FOLLOWS THE RAIN: That rain that we advertised that was supposed to
last most of today was slow about arriving. The rain that was to move up
from the Gulf of Mexico was shunted to the NE into Georgia. However the rain
from the west moved into North and West Alabama this morning and spread
eastward.
Colder air was following on its heels. The colder air will start spilling
into North and West Alabama early tonight and then overspread the state.
For the most part, the rain will end before temperatures drop to worrisome
levels. There is a chance, however, that with a little leftover moisture
there could be a few snow flurries over extreme North Alabama as the night
goes on. We do not think there will be problems.

Sunshine returns Friday and then look for dry weather all the way into early
next week. Another cold front of sorts will come through Sunday with a
little cloudiness, but no precipitation. We may not see another
precipitation event until the middle of next week.

THE NATION'S GROWING ICEBOX: It has not been this cold in parts of the
Northern USA in a number of years. Today the freeze extended all the way
down to the Rio Grande. The snow field has also expanded with the snow cover
down into Oklahoma, North Texas, Missouri and Illinois. Northerly winds
blowing off of that will hold our temperatures down more than the weather
models advertise. The real bitter cold was over the Northern Plains and
Northern Rockies this morning. The coldest in the entire USA, counting
Alaska, was 42 below zero at West Yellowstone, Montana. It was 35 below in
Big Piney, Wyoming. A few other lows, all of them records for December 8,
included 2 below in Chicago, 10 in Abilene and 3 below in Amarillo, Texas.
In Alaska, an amazing warm up. The low was a relatively mild 8 below zero at
Deadhorse.

GOODBYE HURRICANE SEASON: Cheers are in order. What was once Hurricane
Epsilon, faded rapidly overnight and will pretty much be history in a day or
two. The National Hurricane Center has posted its last advisory and the
harried forecaster wrote, "good riddance" in the headline of the advisory.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Someone asked me today if Little Miss Molly
had ever seen snow and how she reacted. She did see a few small flakes last
winter. The minute we stepped out the back door, she looked up in amazement
and leapt off the ground trying to grab every snowflake
individually...before daylight today I heard that familiar thump on my
king-sized bed. Little Miss Molly had become airborne landing on the bed,
came up to me and sniffed to make sure it was me. I played dead again and
she retreated and plopped down on both my feet and went sound to sleep. One
thing is for sure-she cannot be peeved at me for not playing with her a lot
lately. I believe we have played a record amount the last two days, but it
is never too much for that little girl. Life goes on.

into North and West Alabama early tonight and then overspread the state.

Life goes on.

...A Miserable December Day...

This is not exactly going to be a "Chamber of Commerce" day around here.
Clouds, cold temperatures, and a soaking rain headline the forecast for most
of Alabama. Temperatures should hover between 38 and 42 most all day, with
most places getting between one-half and one inch of rain.

The rain will end from west to east tonight, and there is still an outside
chance of a few snow flurries over the northeast corner of the state. And,
after midnight, a fresh surge of cold air rolls into the deep south. Despite
a clearing sky tomorrow, daytime temperatures will have a hard time reaching
the low 40s. And, by Saturday morning another hard freeze is likely with the
mercury dipping into the 20 to 24 degree range. Colder spots could reach the
teens.

The rest of the weekend will be dry. Another surge of colder air moves in
here on Sunday, which should keep temperatures below normal well into next
week.

NEXT RAIN: It is beginning to look like the first half of next week will be
dry; the medium range computer model guidance now suggests the next rain
event will come around Thursday (December 15). We might have an issue with
some wintry precipitation over the northern quarter of the state at that
time, but needless to say for now it is way too early to be specific or
overly concerned. We will keep an eye on it.

WINTER MESS: Freezing rain will bring ice to parts of the Carolinas today,
mainly west and north of I-85. Heavy snow is likely to the north tonight and
tomorrow, in a broad band from West Virginia through New England.

BRRRR: West Yellowstone, MT dropped to 45 degrees below zero early
yesterday. Denver's high was only 3 degrees.

A COLD RAIN FOR THURSDAY: The clouds have already moved in paving the way
for a wet day tomorrow. It will be a cold rain, but we still think it will
be only rain all across Central Alabama. Even in the extreme north it
appears that there will be little danger of any winter weather problems. The
rain will persist into Thursday night, but look for clearing weather Friday.
After that, dry weather through the weekend.

It will not be as cold tonight. Highs tomorrow with all that rain should be
in the low to mid 40s. Colder air will move in after the rain and drop lows
into the 20s Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. See our day-by-day
forecast. All of this rain will be caused by a low pressure system forming
in the Gulf of Mexico and moving toward the NE. There are other ingredients
in the pie also spreading eastward from the Plains states. This was causing
the icy conditions across North Texas today, including Dallas-Ft. Worth. To
the north of Alabama, as much as 2 inches of snow may accumulate over NW
Tennessee.

It was cold across the state again this morning and a lot of places had the
heaviest frost so far this season. At Black Creek, in NE Etowah County, the
low was 18 and ABC 33/40 Weather Watcher, Vic Bell, said the frost looked
like snow. A few other lows:

22 in Pinson
23 in Cullman
24 in Huntsville
25 at Birmingham Airport
26 in Tuscaloosa

EVEN THE GRISLY BEARS SHIVERED: At the west entrance to Yellowstone Park
this morning, the official low was a bitter 45 below zero. That easily broke
the record for December 7. The weather is unusually cold over the Northern
Plains and Northern Rockies especially for this early in the season. There
was a record low of 27 below in Laramie, Wyoming this morning and 20 below
in Cheyenne. The coldest in Wyoming was 35 below at Farson. In Alaska, it
has actually "warmed up." The low at Beaver, Alaska was 29 below as compared
to 53 below zero just a few days ago. For you warm weather fans, it got up
to 85 in Marathon, Florida yesterday.

HURRICANE EPSILON: Let's try to ignore it and maybe it will go away. It was
still way out in the Atlantic and it seems certain to weaken soon. No threat
to land.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A record amount of playing chase ball with
Molly yesterday. We played a lot and she curled up on my National Geographic
blanket on the couch for a long evening nap. She woke up at 11 pm with an
urgent request to go outside. Squatting on that cold grass woke her up
completely and when we came back in, she was raring to play. We then had the
longest chase ball session ever. I threw her favorite ball all the way
across the living area at least 50 or 60 times. She would chase it at
seemingly at 60 mph, run back with it and slam it on my shoe for me to throw
it again. She finally got so pooped that she diverted to the king-sized bed
with the ball still in her mouth and in seconds curled up and went to sleep.
We walked this morning on a very heavy frost. I have noticed that she does
her "business" in record time under those occasions.

...Rain Returns Tomorrow...

A messy winter storm is unfolding today through parts of Texas, Oklahoma,
and Arkansas, where some snow and ice is likely for places like Dallas and
Oklahoma City. In advance of this system, clouds will gradually increase
across Alabama this afternoon and tonight.

We continue to believe the atmosphere will be sufficiently warm for only a
cold rain across most of Alabama tomorrow. A brief period of freezing rain
and a little bridge icing is possible early tomorrow over the extreme
northern part of the state, but even there most places will have only rain
throughout the day. Temperatures will hold in the 30s as the rain falls,
making for miserable conditions.

The rain will end tomorrow night, and a few snow flurries are possible
mainly over the northeast corner of the state as the cold air deepens. Then,
on Friday our sky will clear as the storm moves up into the northeast U.S.,
where heavy snow is possible for places like Washington and New York City.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weekend will begin with a very cold morning early
Saturday. At this point it looks like most places will drop into the 17 to
22 degree range early Saturday morning. Afternoons will be a little warmer,
but temperatures will remain below normal.
Another storm system should bring another threat of rain to Alabama by late
Monday and Tuesday of next week.

THE FROZEN TUNDRA: The mercury failed to climb above zero yesterday in
Spencer, Iowa, where the high was 1 below zero, following a morning low 17
below. Today's forecast high in Denver is three degrees. Yesterday's low of
7 in Cleveland was a new record for December 6.

==================================================================

PRECIPITATION RETURNS THURSDAY: And it may start off Wednesday night in
areas south of Birmingham. By far the most attention seems to be focused on
the possibility of some wintry precipitation on Thursday. This is due to a
low pressure area that will form over the North Gulf of Mexico and move NE
up the Atlantic coast. As it passes to our SE, it will spread precipitation
inland. For cities like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston, we believe it
will be a cold rain. We can never rule out a bit of sleet early Thursday
morning. Further north the precipitation may start as a wintry mix roughly
north of U.S. 278, which is also the Hamilton, Cullman, Gadsden line. We
will, of course, watch it very closely, because just a few degrees error in
temperature
forecast can make a lot of difference.

When the low moves away and the precipitation ends Friday morning, there
could be a few snow flurries even as far south as Birmingham. The weekend
should feature mostly sunshine, but it will be in the lower 20s again
Saturday morning.

OUR COLDEST NIGHT: That was last night and here are some of the lows
recorded around the state this morning.

17 in Hamilton, Hartselle, Madison, Florence
19 in Crossville, Ft. Payne, Gadsden, Athens, Addison
20 in Moulton
21 in Cullman, Pinson, Vinemont, Munford
22 in Huntsville, Oxford, Guntersville, Jasper
23 in Helena, Alabaster, Greystone Cove
25 in Wadley and atop Mt. Cheaha

THE GREAT ARCTIC ICEBOX: Still a lot of bitter cold arctic air over the far
north country. It dropped to 50 below zero during the night at Chandalar
Lake, Alaska. It was 49 below in the north part of the Canadian Yukon, 42
below at Little Chicago in the Northwest Territory of Canada (gotta find out
why that name). It was 41 below at Rabbit Kettle in the same region (another
neat place name). Here in the lower 48, it was 24 below at Gunnison,
Colorado with 12 inches of snow on the ground. Climax, Colorado has 36
inches of snow. That is one of the highest towns in Colorado, even higher up
than Leadville. It was 9 above this morning on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky
Mountains, but no snow.

OUR CHRISTMAS HURRICANE? Of course not, but old Epsilon was tenaciously
hanging on at hurricane strength today 570 miles SW of the Azores and moving
south at 9 mph. Dr. William Gray, the famous hurricane researcher at
Colorado State University, has issued his forecast for the 2006 season. He
is calling for 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes (including 5 major ones). That
is not as many as this year, but still above average.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Had a horrible nightmare last night. I dreamed
that a huge alligator landed on my king-sized bed and was going to eat me
alive. I grabbed my flashlight and beat the stew out of that gator, only to
wake up and discover I had beaten Molly and injured her badly. Of course it
was all a dream and nothing happened. Molly was curled up in a tight knot
sound asleep just a foot or two away. I reached over and drug her across the
bed and hugged her tightly. She looked puzzled in the faint pre-dawn light.
That little 9-pound girl is so huggable. Life goes on but maybe I need more
sleep.

...Cold Weather Continues...

Temperatures will remain well below normal across Alabama all week, and our
main focus will be on Thursday as a storm system forms in the Gulf of
Mexico. If this was the middle of January, we could be greatly concerned
over the possibility of an ice storm. But, this is early December, when
major winter storms are relatively rare, and for now it looks like most of
central Alabama will escape with a cold, rainy day.

Clouds will return quickly tomorrow night, and precipitation should begin to
fall early Thursday morning. There is a chance that a little sleet, or a few
spots of freezing rain could be seen as it begins, but the precipitation
should change to rain with only a small risk of any icing as far south as
I-20.

We still think there will is a chance of a wintry mix along and north of a
line from Hamilton to Cullman to Collinsville, where some bridge icing will
indeed be possible Thursday morning.

Thursday night, as a surface low moves northeast of here, the cold air will
become deeper and some light snow is possible on the back side of the
system, mostly over the northeast part of the state. Any accumulation should
be limited to elevations above 1,000 feet in the area from Gadsden to
Chattanooga (mainly atop Lookout Mountain). A few flurries could be see as
far south as Birmingham late Thursday night or early Friday, but they should
be insignificant.

UNCOMFORTABLE WEATHER AHEAD: It was not the best day for a picnic in the
park. After all the rain and storms Sunday, colder air moved in. By early
this afternoon, the temperature had fallen to 34 at Mentone on Lookout
Mountain, but up in the NW Alabama where skies had cleared temperatures
recovered to the mid 40s.

With clearing tonight, there will be a widespread freeze with temperatures
falling into the lower 20s. If the wind holds up too much, it might not get
quite that cold. We look for almost all sunshine Tuesday. Wednesday should
also be dry.

OUR MOST INTERESTING DAY: It is something we will have to watch closely.
With a strong high pressure system bulging in from the north, a low pressure
area is expected to develop over the north Gulf of Mexico and spread
precipitation inland starting Wednesday night and especially on Thursday.
Across Central Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston, we
think it will be a cold rain, but possibly mixed with a little sleet early
in the day. Further north a wintry mix is possible generally north of
US-278. A slight error in our temperature forecast could change that weather
picture. We will have to simply watch it. Friday will bring clearing and the
weekend also looks dry.

THE SAGA OF HURRICANE EPSILON: He, she or it is not playing by the rules.
Despite colder water temperatures Epsilon has maintained hurricane strength.
One of the forecasters in Miami said he was giving up on trying to explain
why it has not weakened.

A VISIT TO THE FROZEN NORTH: The coldest temperatures so far this season.
Some examples: in the last day or so it dropped to a bitter 53 below zero at
Beaver, Alaska. This morning the official low was 51 below at Chandalar
Lake, Alaska, 47 below at Fort Yukon and 45 below at Arctic Village. The
wind chill was as low as 65 below at Deadhorse, Alaska. The temperature was
also 51 below in the north part of the Yukon Territory...a few other notes:
I am always intrigued by interesting place names. Two more came across in
the last 24 hours when hail the size of quarters was reported at Promised
Land, South Carolina Sunday and a low of 16 below zero at Lostwood, North
Dakota this morning...1 to 4 inches of snow expected around Gatlinburg
tonight, 2 to 5 inches over NE Tennessee, 5 to 8 inches in parts of New
Jersey and 4 to 8 inches tomorrow out on Cape Cod.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor Little Miss Molly. Because of working
severe weather all night Saturday night and most of Sunday, there was a
drought of playtime. At 4:56 this morning, she leapt up on our king sized
bed, walked directly to me, poked me with her nose and paw and sniffed to
see if that was me. I played dead because I was so short on sleep. Amazingly
after a few seconds she went to the foot of the bed, curled up in a tight
knot and slept for another hour and 15 minutes. I sure did thank her. We had
a nice chilly walk this morning. Again no old crows and not a single bird,
but when we got back home an old crow came walking across our driveway. I
will do some catch up ballgames with Molly later. She does not ask very much
compared to all the love she gives us. Life goes on.

...Cold Weather Ahead...

GOOD MORNING: If you are looking for the definition of a miserable day in
Birmingham, this one would be it.
TODAY: Temperatures are starting off in the upper 30s in most locations. And
they will go nowhere fast all day. In fact, temperatures will remain steady
or fall throughout the day. Rain should taper off during the morning hours.
Some light snow will be experienced across extreme North Alabama. I
wouldn't be surprised to hear about a few snow flurries anywhere over the
northern half of the state today.
TONIGHT: Clearing could commence during the late afternoon, but by sunset,
it will be underway in earnest. Temperatures will plummet tonight beneath
clear skies with light winds. Most locations will fall to between 22-24
degrees. Some normally colder locations, such as protected valleys in
Northeast Alabama will make the teens.
TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Temperatures may well stay in the 30s all day in many
locations despite a good deal of sunshine. Nighttime lows will drop way
into the 20s again. Wednesday should feature partly cloudy skies.
LATE WEEK WINTRY ACTION? By Wednesday night, moisture will be moving toward
Alabama from the west as low pressure gets organized in the Gulf of Mexico.
Temperatures will still be cold enough for a wintry mix to form over North
Alabama during the morning hours. For now, we will call for a mix of sleet
and rain on Thursday. Temperatures will start off just above freezing and
rise only into the upper 30s. A light wintry mix may continue through
Thursday night and possibly even into Friday morning. I would not be
surprised for temperatures to be colder than we are forecasting, which could
result in more frozen than liquid precip. This is a developing weather
situation, and later forecasts will be able to better refine the threat of
wintry weather.
WEEKEND WEATHER: Saturday looks partly cloudy and cold, but low pressure
approaching from the west could make for a wet situation starting Sunday
afternoon. - Bill Murray
