the kids enjoy petting the live animals of Christmas.

GOOD AFTERNOON: A good bit of the area is experiencing cloudiness on this
Saturday afternoon after a chilly start.

CHILLY START: Temperatures dropped like a rock last night under mostly
clear skies and good radiational cooling conditions. Some representative
morning lows from across the area included:

18 at De Soto State Park
18 at Muscle Shoals
19 in Pinson
19 in Fort Payne
20 in Huntsville
20 in Decatur
22 in Tuscaloosa
22 in Anniston
23 at the Birmingham International Airport
25 at the NWS Calera

GO AWAY CLOUDS: A large area of moisture in the lower levels of the
atmosphere is resulting in the clouds. Across North Alabama, where there
has been a great deal of sunshine, temperatures are still struggling to get
into the middle 40s. Across North Central Alabama, where clouds have been
more prominent, readings were slowly climbing through the lower 40s. Further
south, in Montgomery, where clouds were just moving in, temperatures had
already made the lower 50s. I think the clouds will be swept out to the
northeast tonight ahead of an approaching trough of low pressure. If skies
are mostly clear this evening, temperatures will drop to just below freezing
overnight.

SUNDAY: The trough will deliver a reinforcing shot of cold air to the area
late tonight and tomorrow. Regional radars indicate no precipitation with
this system, and none is expected. Skies may be cloudy at times tomorrow
due to the first trough, and another one that will pass by to the north
later tomorrow. Temperatures tomorrow will top out in the upper 40s.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: We will remain under influence of the upper level trough
into next week with a northwesterly flow aloft continuing on Monday.
Disturbances in the flow may bring additional cloudiness from time to time.
Surface high pressure should dominate our weather starting Tuesday with
mostly sunny skies. Meanwhile, low pressure will be forming well to the
west of Alabama. As it does, a return flow from the south will be setting
up over the Deep South. The low will move to the northeast. It will be a
wet weather system for us, with showers entering the state early Wednesday
morning. While the heaviest precipitation won't last long, showers may
linger into the overnight hours. Thursday should feature clearing and
cooler weather. Clearing may wait until later in the day on Thursday as a
more powerful cold front deeps across the area.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Buffalo was buried under 38 inches of lake effect
snow to set a 24-hour record as intense lake effect snow squalls buffeted
the city. Watertown NY recorded 39 inches of snow in just 12 hours, with
snow falling at the rate of 4 inches of hour for 6 straight hours.
