...A Miserable December Day...
This is not exactly going to be a "Chamber of Commerce" day around here.
Clouds, cold temperatures, and a soaking rain headline the forecast for most
of Alabama. Temperatures should hover between 38 and 42 most all day, with
most places getting between one-half and one inch of rain.
The rain will end from west to east tonight, and there is still an outside
chance of a few snow flurries over the northeast corner of the state. And,
after midnight, a fresh surge of cold air rolls into the deep south. Despite
a clearing sky tomorrow, daytime temperatures will have a hard time reaching
the low 40s. And, by Saturday morning another hard freeze is likely with the
mercury dipping into the 20 to 24 degree range. Colder spots could reach the
teens.
The rest of the weekend will be dry. Another surge of colder air moves in
here on Sunday, which should keep temperatures below normal well into next
week.
NEXT RAIN: It is beginning to look like the first half of next week will be
dry; the medium range computer model guidance now suggests the next rain
event will come around Thursday (December 15). We might have an issue with
some wintry precipitation over the northern quarter of the state at that
time, but needless to say for now it is way too early to be specific or
overly concerned. We will keep an eye on it.
WINTER MESS: Freezing rain will bring ice to parts of the Carolinas today,
mainly west and north of I-85. Heavy snow is likely to the north tonight and
tomorrow, in a broad band from West Virginia through New England.
BRRRR: West Yellowstone, MT dropped to 45 degrees below zero early
yesterday. Denver's high was only 3 degrees.
