...Heating Up...

GOOD MORNING! Alright. I am going to chalk the typo that I had in yesterday’s forecast narrative up to wishful thinking. I thought that I had corrected the 0 degree low I called for tonight in all versions (it was supposed to be 60 degrees.) Thanks to all the kind readers who gave me a little sweet ribbing. You can unwrap the pipes now. And put the dog back outside. You guys are great!

WISHFUL THINKING: By Wednesday, any thoughts of 0 degree temperatures will be wishful thinking as we head into some hot weather. We should see 90 degrees around here by Wednesday, with temperatures at least in the lower 90s during the latter half of the week into next week.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Today looks like it will be very similar to yesterday, with lots of sunshine, puffy cumulus clouds developing and a light northerly breeze. There might be a tiny chance of a shower or storm developing over eastern sections, which will be closer to the trough of low pressure over Georgia, but most areas will remain high and dry.

WEEK AHEAD: Things should be dry through Monday, with widely scattered afternoon and evening storms possible during the remainder of the week. Temperatures will gradually head above normal for late June.

TROPICS: The Atlantic Basin is calm at this time, but the GFS tries to stir up low pressure over the southern Gulf in the next couple of days, moving it toward Tampa. We will be monitoring this closely.

ON THIS DATE IN 1922: The Tiros V satellite was launched. The Tiros series was held in a nearly circular orbit at an altitude of about 475 miles. It took one hundred minutes for the satellite to make one orbit around the Earth, or about 14.5 times per day. Thirty two photos were taken per orbit. The images were stored on magnetic tape and relayed to ground stations as the satellite passed over. The first four Tiros satellites could not accurately “see” weather north or south at 55 degrees. The Tiros V could “see” to about 65 degrees latitude.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Today’s weather is brought to you by...the city of Marquette, Michigan. That is where the high pressure that is in control of our weather is centered this afternoon.

HOW ‘BOUT THIS MORNING’S WEATHER? Check out these morning lows...

52 Fort Payne
54 Cullman
55 Pinson
59 Birmingham Airport

Get ready for another night like last night. Skies are mostly sunny this afternoon, with just a few puffy fair weather cumulus clouds around. Skies will be mostly clear overnight, with lows dropping into the upper 50s to near 60 in most locations once again.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like a fairly impressive copy of today, with mostly sunny skies, rain chances that are nearly nil, a few cumulus clouds, light northerly winds and temperatures in the middle 80s. The only real difference will be that humidity levels will be slightly higher, with dewpoints creeping back into the 60s from the comfortable 50s we are enjoying today.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: A large trough of low pressure extends along the East Coast of the United States. This trough is giving us the cool, dry northerly flow. There has been some uncertainty about the development of an upper low to the east of Alabama that would retrograde, or move back our way, giving shower chances to eastern sections. The latest model runs discount this possibility, weakening the trough with time and moving it out to the northeast, although there will be a slight chance of a shower Monday and Tuesday over Northeast Alabama. We should see only isolated PM storms Wednesday and Thursday and then only widely scattered afternoon and evening storms into the weekend. A ridge of high pressure over the middle of the country will slide to the east, setting up camp over Alabama and the South. This spells some hot weather ahead for late in the week into next week. We will see temperatures well into the 90s later this week into next week. Oh, boy...

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: An F3 tornado struck the small town of Siren, MN shortly before 8:30 p.m., killing 3 and injuring sixteen people along its 20 mile path. The twister damaged or destroyed nearly half of the town’s 400 homes and 70 businesses. The NWS issued a tornado warning 50 minutes before the storm reached Siren. Ironically, Siren’s warning siren had been knocked out by storms earlier in the spring and was scheduled for repair the week after the storm struck. It didn’t matter anyway, because the power had gone out in the town about 20 minutes before the twister. This would have rendered Siren’s sirens useless anyway. The Sheriff was actually going door-to-door before the tornado, warning townspeople.

An important lesson from the Siren storm: sirens should not be depended upon for receiving warnings. Everyone should determine what is the best source of weather information for them to monitor during potential severe weather: NOAA WeatherRadio, Commercial radio or television, etc.

...Unusually Nice For June...

GOOD MORNING! I agree with the thoughts of a very nice reader who praised our beautiful June weather in a Friday afternoon note. “I love the weather we’ve been having, with the wonderful ocean winds blowing in from the tropical storm, and then, now, this cool front!” I concur wholeheartedly.

PLEASANT JUNE WEATHER: Last evening, I saw an unusual sight for a mid-June night. When Atlanta pitcher Horacio Ramirez reached base in the 6th inning of the Braves-Cincinnati game, he actually summoned a warmup jacket from the dugout. You won’t see that very often. The same airmass that brought the cool air and low humidity to the Great American Ballpark in Cincy is the same one that is giving us a comfortable June morning here at home.

Cool high pressure over the Great Lakes is the source of the delightful airmass. It will continue to give us warm, mostly sunny days and cool, comfortable nights for the next few days. Temperatures tonight will drop to near 0 degrees over most of the area, including a few upper 50s in some of the normally cooler locations.

Humidity levels will remain low through Monday, before temperatures and dew points begin increasing steadily. Temperatures will be near to just above normal by Wednesday, continuing into the weekend.

There is one fly in the ointment, however. An upper level low pressure system is expected to retrograde, or move east to west toward Alabama. This may set off an isolated shower or storm over eastern sections of the state. But for the most part, any rain chances will be small and limited to areas mainly east of Alabama.

END OF THE WEEK AND BEYOND: Moisture levels should finally increase to the point that afternoon and evening showers and storms will return by Friday. Still, rain chances will be low even then.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: A severe thunderstorm, replete with funnel cloud forced the evacuation of the control tower at the Indianapolis Airport.

THE ALABAMA STORY: We’re still hanging on to a dry and relatively comfortable weekend, even though some of the pesky weather models try to tell us it won’t be completely clear.

We have mentioned all week that under a weather pattern like this (NW flow aloft) that thunderstorms often form in places like Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas and want to head SE sometimes into our area. We think they will remain west of Alabama, although a few could move across the Mobile area. Overnight a big family of thunderstorms brought some wind damage to parts of East Oklahoma, South Arkansas and North Louisiana. Numerous trees down in some of the communities along U.S. 82 across South Arkansas. I was intrigued by a storm report SE of Texarkana saying that trees and fences were down and livestock had run amok.

Looks good for City Stages over the weekend. We believe it will be rain free with lower than usual daytime humidity and very comfortable evenings. We are forecasting highs in the mid 80s through the weekend.

LAST NIGHT’S LOWS: Some spin-off clouds from those thunderstorms to the west held Central Alabama temperature 3 to 4 degrees higher than expected. It did drop into the upper 50s this morning in places like Valley Head, DeSoto State Park, Hartselle, Cullman and Ft. Payne.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A week ago, we were getting ready for Arlene. This weekend no tropical development is expected even though there is a disturbed weather area 250 miles south of Bermuda.

FINAL FRIDAY NOTES: In the last 14 weeks, Pensacola an incredible 45.21 inches of rain, 27.39 above normal for that time period...Orlando another 1.67 inches yesterday bringing their total in slightly over 2 weeks to 10.41...it was 34 at Blue Canyon, California and Redmond, Oregon this morning...high wind warnings continued for the Oregon coast including Gold Beach and Coos Bay, where gusts were expected to reach 75 mph in the Headlands...in Concord, New Hampshire, a very comfortable high/low of 56/50 in the last 24 hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Much excitement for Little Miss Molly since yesterday afternoon. On our late afternoon walk, three houses up the track, the two visiting Yorkies were sitting in the yard with their (human) mom. Their back yard is down an embankment...sort of steep. They happened to look up and see Little Miss Molly strutting by...pulling me on the other end of the leash. They both went berserk. They came roaring up the bank, barking loudly, as if they were going to gobble up Molly. They are very young and smaller than Molly. Instead of running away, Molly jerked me part way down the bank to meet them. Finally their mom clapped her hands loudly and got them under control and they returned to the yard. Meanwhile, a large fenced-in dog next door to the Yorkies got all hot and bothered by this excitement and got into the noise parade. It sounded like a widespread riot breaking out. Molly finally trotted on up the track very nonchalant as if nothing had happened….life goes on whether things are peaceful or a doggie riot is underway.

...Dry Through The Weekend...

Unusually dry air covers Alabama this morning, and if you are up early
enough there is actually a hint of fall in the air. Sure, I know the
official beginning of summer is still four days away, but you have to love
this weather. Continental air will stay in place through the weekend, so our
forecast will stick with sunny warm days, clear cool nights (for June), and
low humidity values all the way through Sunday.

We will watch a parade of thunderstorms move from Oklahoma and Arkansas down
through Louisiana and Mississippi, but all of that should stay well to the
west of Alabama. We might see some high clouds from time to time, but each
day should feature lots of sunshine.

The first few days of next week look rain-free; it is very unusual for us to
go that long without having to deal with afternoon showers and storms this
time of the year.
TROPICAL WEATHER: All is relatively quiet in the Atlantic basin now and
tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine each day through early next week along the
central Gulf coast with only isolated showers. Daytime temperatures will
reach the mid to upper 80s, and the sea water temperature at Pensacola is a
very warm 86 degrees.

CALIFORNIA SHAKERS: A magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled southern California
yesterday; the third significant seismic event within the last week.
Seismologists are generally downplaying the notion that anything bigger is
ahead in the near future on the west coast.

ROAMING: Hot spot in the nation yesterday was Needles, CA with 107. In sharp
contrast, Boston's high yesterday was only 57.

DRY SUMMER WEATHER: I guess we should start by celebrating some pleasantly
cool temperatures this morning. Selected lows:

57 in DeSoto State Park
58 at Valley Head and Belle Mina
59 at Black Creek, Ft. Payne, Hamilton, Heflin
60 at Cottondale, Russell Cave National Monument
61 in Cullman, Gadsden, Crossville
62 in Jasper, Wedowee, Wadley, Russellville
63 in Cherokee (that's in Colbert County, not
Cherokee County), Anniston
64 in Athens, Ashville, Decatur, Birmingham
65 in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa

Drier air continues to circulate into the state from the NW. By tomorrow,
daytime dew points will be in the mid and upper 50s, which means you will
feel the lower humidity. There's still a chance that a group of
thunderstorms coming out of Arkansas and Oklahoma will move SE. All
indications are that they should turn southward across Louisiana and leave
us dry. Therefore, we have no rain in the forecast all the way into early
next week. Nights will be cool by June standards and highs will be
consistently in the mid 80s. Not bad for June.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: A man in his 40s was killed by lightning while
walking on Navarre Beach in NW Florida at 5:30 yesterday afternoon. We can
never overcaution on the dangers of lightning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A lot of showers and thunderstorms as far down in the
Gulf as you can go. That part is called the Bay of Campeche. It is too close
to land to have a chance for tropical development and upper winds are
expected to become less favorable. The air force recon scheduled for today
has been cancelled.

LOTS OF FACTS IN SHORT NOTES: 113, Death Valley Wednesday...34 this morning
Stanley, Idaho and Yellowstone Park...we can always find colder temperatures
in mostly uninhabited areas...17 degrees this morning at Bishop Pass, Calif.
, elevation 11,972...another inch of rain Orlando brings the two-week total
to 8.74 inches...18.70 inches of rain at Punta Gorda, Fla., so far in June.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It appeared that my early morning walk with my
little friend Molly would be totally uneventful this morning leaving me
nothing to write about. It was not to be. On the way back down the walking
track, we came within 12 inches of a little baby rabbit who was obviously
crouched stone still to keep Molly from seeing it. When Molly did see it, he
dove headfirst into the hedgerow followed by an airborne Molly. I pulled
Molly back just before she reached it...this is not newsworthy, but a tiny
gnat followed Molly for over 100 yards circling her head. Molly got really
irritated and even slapped at the gnat with her paw. Sure was funny to watch
her...we could feel the lower dew points this morning, but it was still warm
and Molly and I produced a lot of sweatperation...when we get back home,
Molly always expects a treat and then she flattens out on the floor to cool
off and take a nap. She leads the life of Miss Riley. Life goes on.

...Another Hot Day; Lower Humidity...

While the mercury will warm back up to near the 90 degree mark today, humidity values will be noticeably lower, making the heat a little more manageable. We expect a good supply of sunshine today with any afternoon showers limited to the southern quarter of the state.

A disturbance moving down the back side of a developing upper trough over the eastern U.S. will bring a risk of a few scattered showers and storms to Alabama tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. But, the air will be quite dry and the best coverage of storms will probably be to the west of us, over Mississippi.

THE WEEKEND: Very nice weather for the weekend with lots of sunshine, low humidity, and cooler nights. We should be in the low 60s early Sunday, and some of the cooler spots might even wind up in the upper 50s.

Early next week moist air begins to return, and a few afternoon showers or storms could return by Tuesday and Wednesday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: One disturbance is near Hispaniola and eastern Cuba moving north; it is rather disorganized and upper air winds don’t favor any development. Another one is over the Bay of Campeche, and is moving slowly westward into Mexico.

RANDOM NOTES: Hot spots in Alabama yesterday were Montgomery and Mobile with 95 degrees. The sea water temperature at Pensacola yesterday afternoon was 83 degrees. Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 113 degrees. Lots of rain yesterday across central Florida; Orlando reported 1.01”, and to the east Daytona Beach picked up 1.90”. Up in Michigan, the high yesterday was only 68 degrees. Chicago’s high was only 70.

COOLER NIGHTS AND LESS HUMID DAYS: It was 90 or better over much of Central and South Alabama this afternoon. However, up north the dew point had already dropped to near 60 in some of those quaint towns up the Paint Rock River, such as Garth, Trenton, Princeton, Hollytree and Estilfork. It was also near 60 all across the northern third of the state from Cullman north. Translation: a noticeable drop in humidity.

That’s going to be the story for the next several days and high temperatures will also back off several degrees, mostly to the mid 80s. Some places might touch 90 again tomorrow, however.

There is one little roach in the honey. This type weather pattern sometimes permits a family of strong thunderstorms to form in the plains and migrate toward the SE. It’s called an MCS. There is some hint this will happen, but it appears it will pass off to our west down through Mississippi. Some of the weather models place it further east. On the cautious side, we have introduced a chance of a few showers or thunderstorms Friday afternoon. For the weekend, however, it should go back to mostly sunshine and continued lower than normal humidity.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The North-Central Caribbean continues to be a little irritable due to an upper level low. It has become less organized since yesterday and the winds upstairs are not favorable for development. Far down in the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, a disturbed weather area continued over the Bay of Campeche because of a tropical wave moving slowly west. Although surface pressures have not been falling, upper level winds are favorable for development. An air force plane will investigate Thursday. It may not have time to develop much because it is so close to land, but we will watch and wait.

SKIPPING AROUND FAR AND WIDE: Way too hot in the NE for mid-June, but big relief is on the way. It was 95 in New York and JFK Airport yesterday. It will only be in the mid 80s today. Washington will drop from 92 to 83 tomorrow. Boston was expecting a high of only 58 today...30 at Redmond, Oregon was the lowest in the nation this morning...115 at Death Valley was the hottest...a rare tsunami warning on the Pacific coast last night. We saw network video of people running in Coos Bay, Oregon That startled us a bit because my wife’s sister and nephew live there. Fortunately, nothing developed.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Walked with my 9-pound little pal early this morning, just after a workman had mowed the grass in the common area around the walking track. This meant that bugs of all kinds, especially grasshoppers, were hopping around. So was little Miss Molly—her version of a safari. She was jumping up and down trying to pounce on a bug. I didn’t want her eating those. Not far up the track, we saw Jo-Jo, a beautiful smaller dog that Molly is clearly in love with. She fast forwarded toward him and I had to lean back on the leash. As she got close, she paused and looked bashful, but she and Joe-Jo kissed (rubbed noses). Then both of them went round and round the bathroom (tree trunk). I suppose they can tell who all has been there in the last several hours. Life goes on amongst the grasshoppers, bugs and birds.

...Still Hot Today; Drier Air Filters In...

Once again today hot weather will headline our forecast package, as most communities should climb into the 90 to 94 degree range this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. A surface front will drift through the state today, but the air is so dry we won’t mention rain in our formal forecast at this point. Should any showers or storms form during the heat of the day, they should be very widely separated.

The heat backs off beginning tomorrow, and by Friday and the weekend high temperatures will be in the mid 80s. Lower humidity values will also help to make temperatures more comfortable tomorrow and Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: At the moment the weekend looks mostly rain-free with warm afternoons and pleasant nights. A major upper trough over the eastern U.S. will keep temperatures at or below normal levels for mid-June.

TROPICS: Disturbed weather continues over the Caribbean, but upper air winds are fairly strong and there is no evidence of any surface circulation at this time. If something happens to develop in that region, the system would be forced to move northeast in a few days thanks to the upper trough forming over the eastern U.S.

YESTERDAY’S HEAT: Yesterday was the hottest day so far this year for most Alabama communities. Birmingham’s high was 92; the first time the city has dealt with 90 degree heat since August 28, 2004. Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Mobile all reached 94 degrees.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 10 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend with only widely scattered storms. Temperatures will peak in the upper 80s on the immediate coast. The water temperature hit 85 degrees yesterday.

THE ALABAMA SAUNA: It feels that way today for sure with the leftover moisture from Arlene and some of our hottest temperatures so far this year. By 2:00 o’clock this afternoon, the temperature had climbed as high as 93 in Tuscaloosa, 91 in Huntsville, Cullman and Birmingham and 90 in Gadsden. That is the first time that the official Birmingham temperature had reached 90 since last August. With dew points in the 72-74 range, the humidity is no fun at all. However, we’re going to get a break from that. A cold front (well, I guess we should just call that a cool front), was pushing across Arkansas this afternoon. Ahead of that front, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch covered Middle Tennessee. The Storm Prediction Center has the NW part of Alabama under a slight risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening. However, we think they should be few in number. The air is still extremely dry above about 8,000 feet.

What few showers or storms we get should end early tomorrow morning and the humidity will start dropping later in the day. We believe that Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be dry with highs between 85 and 88 and lows 63 to 65. Somebody up in NE Alabama in a valley may experience about 58 Friday or Saturday morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A disturbed weather area continues to lollygag around the Central Caribbean caused by a broad trough of low pressure at the surface. There is no sign of a circulation at this time, so the reconnaissance mission for today was cancelled. Upper winds also remain unfavorable for development, so if something comes out of this, it should be slow to occur.

THREE DOT STUFF: A Moderate Risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening over all of Ohio, SE Michigan, extreme west New York State (including Buffalo) and the west half of Pennsylvania including Pittsburgh. They have had an unusual amount of that kind of threat in the last week or so...112 in Death Valley yesterday...28 this morning at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park...in 1957 at this time, East St. Louis was flooded with 16.54 inches of rain in 24 hours. That’s the most ever recorded for the entire state of Illinois...in 1961 on this date, 106 in downtown San Francisco set their all-time heat record...at this time in 1987, 101 in Milwaukee was their first 100-degree heat in 32 years.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was on my way from my office to the kitchen for my first cup of coffee this morning when little Miss Molly had just awakened. She was moaning and stretching in the living area. She hopped up on the couch and put her front feet on the arm of the couch with a ball in her mouth and those big eyes looking right at me. For the second time, I cancelled the coffee and had a 10-minute romp session. When we got back from our morning walk, there was not a dry thread in my shirt and my clothes were sticking to me. It was just that uncomfortable. Even little Miss Molly, as soon as she had her treat, stretched out as far as she could on the tile part of the floor where it’s cooler to try to cool off. Life goes on in all four seasons, but Molly and I are cheering for October.

...The Heat Cranks Up Again Today...

Birmingham’s high yesterday was 89 degrees, the warmest temperature so far this year. Up until yesterday, the hottest reading was 88 degrees, recorded on three days in June and two in May. There is a good chance we will see our first 90 degree temperature of the year today with a strong June sun. The air remains very dry over Alabama, and the chance of any one spot seeing an afternoon shower will remain very small.

RARE JUNE FRONT: We don’t like to call them a “cold” front this time of the year, but one will be passing through late tomorrow. Once again, due to the dry air, any showers or storms on the front should be few and far between. Then, we will enjoy lower humidity levels on Thursday and slightly cooler temperatures.

The models diverge a bit in the four to seven day time frame, but there is some hint an upper low will form over the southeast U.S., so we will bring the chance of scattered showers back into the forecast for Friday and the weekend.

TROPICAL UPDATE: A disturbed area of weather over the central Caribbean could develop into the season’s second tropical depression today. Currently, the disturbance is moving northwest, but later in the week as a major upper trough forms over the eastern U.S., whatever develops should begin to turn northward, and then northeast. This means the system probably won’t get anywhere close to Alabama, but as always, we will keep an eye on it. It could be a problem for Cuba or the southern part of Florida later in the week before the turn is made.

RAIN UPDATE: Thanks to Arlene, Birmingham’s rain total for the year so far is now 26.80”, only 0.23” short of being right at normal for June 14.

OUR FIRST 90-DEGREE HEAT? While some parts of Alabama have experienced some
90-degree weather already this season, it hasn't happened at Birmingham
Airport. We think tomorrow will be the first day. We have introduced the
word "hot" in tomorrow's forecast. That's when I start using that word,
although I realize that mid 80s can be quite uncomfortable with the humidity
of summer.

The chance of a shower or thunderstorm is small for Tuesday. There may be a
slightly better chance on Wednesday as a fairly rare cold front pushes down
from the NW. It should be cooler Wednesday night with temperatures falling
into the mid 60s by Thursday morning and even low 60s Friday morning. There
could even be some upper 50s in the cooler North Alabama valleys on Friday
morning. We expect mostly sunny Thursday and Friday with noticeably lower
humidity and highs in the mid 80s.

ARLENE POSTMORTEM: She is long gone. What was left of her was moving
quickly northward through Michigan today and headed for Canada. She has lost
her tropical characteristics, but she still brought some flooding to places
like Evansville, Indiana Sunday. Indianapolis got over 3 inches of rain in
the last 24 hours. Here in Alabama rainfall was extremely variable with
Arlene. The heavier amounts over the western part of the state with some
places around 5 inches.

ANOTHER TROPICAL STORM? Not sure yet, but it's beginning to look possible,
mainly because of a disturbance over the Central Caribbean. Slow development
is possible over the next day or two as it moves toward the NW. If something
could develop and reach tropical storm strength, it will be named Bret. The
next four names after that are Cindy, Dennis, Emily and Franklin.

LOOKING IN ALL DIRECTIONS: Big part of Illinois, as well as much of Iowa,
South Minnesota and SW Wisconsin under a moderate risk of severe weather
this afternoon and this evening...108 in Death Valley was the hot spot
yesterday...it was 25 in McCall, Idaho this morning...that's a small town in
SE Idaho. Last time I was there, the business district was only a couple
blocks long and had 5 or 6 bars...in Iraq, a high of 105 is forecast for
Tuesday, but a blistering 114 for Wednesday at Baghdad.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I don't know if mockingbirds say bad words-if
they do, they emptied their vocabulary at little Miss Molly and I on our
morning walk. I wish we could powwow with them and explain that we're not
going to bother their nest. They get very upset when we walk under two
separate trees on the walking track. This morning they came diving out of
the tree to within a couple of feet of Miss Molly. She jumps up and scares
them off...Arlene brought 1.01 inches of rain to our tiny corner. The Old
Crow Creek is flowing again and even the Molly Branch, a small top of the
ground wet weather spring, had a bit of action. I sure did have to ignore
Miss Molly during Arlene, but I'm going to set aside a block of time this
afternoon to play with that little girl. I am pretty sure she keeps a list
and checks it twice on how much I play but life goes on.

...Cool Front Ahead...

GOOD MORNING: After a couple of gloomy days, the sun shone bright on my old
Trussville home, even if it was a sunset yesterday. We should see a good
bit of sunshine today and tomorrow, even though humidity levels are going to
remain high in the wake of Tropical Storm Arlene. That sunshine will work
on those moisture levels to produce widely scattered afternoon and evening
showers and storms today. Coverage should be in the 20-30% range.

Temperatures will be quite warm today, with afternoon readings going well
into the upper 80s along with lots of humidity. Some locations should see
90. With dew points in the muggy 70 degree range, overnight lows will only
make it into the low 70s tonight. Tomorrow looks like it will be a good
replica of today, but with perhaps a bit more in the way of afternoon and
evening showers and storms. Storms could be a little on the strong side
tomorrow.

MIDWEEK FRONT: A cold front in the middle of June is a rare surprise here
in Alabama, but we will take it. The front should arrive late in the day,
and ahead of it, we can expect a band of showers and storms. Some of the
storms could be on the strong side.

BEYOND MIDWEEK: The front will deliver drier and slightly cooler air to us
here in Alabama. Lows Friday, Saturday and Sunday look like they will be in
the middle 60s. This is actually near normal for this time of year, but
better than the muggy 70s we have been experiencing. Highs will be in the
middle 80s right into the weekend with dew points in the lower 60s.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Veteran hurricane forecaster John Hope from The
Weather Channel died on this date of complications from heart surgery. He
was 83 years old. Hope joined the National Hurricane Center in 1968 and
quickly became a senior hurricane specialist. Hope started with The Weather
Channel as their tropical expert when the network debuted in 1982. Hope was
a familiar and reassuring face to millions of Americans in coastal areas.

GOOD NIGHT, ARLENE: It's goodbye and good riddance to our first tropical
storm of the season. The remnants of Arlene are moving quickly northward
through Kentucky this afternoon. The NWS Mobile reports that a 3-5 foot
storm surge was felt along the coast from dauphin Island to Destin. Some
peak wind gusts, lowest pressures and rainfall amounts observed:

Pensacola Airport 59 mph 29.29 2.72
Pensacola NAS 52 mph 29.28* 1.17
Dauphin Island 53 mph 29.47
Navarre FL 63 mph* 29.39 1.58
Mobile Airport 40 mph 29.51 4.52
Destin 52 mph 29.53 1.86
Milton 62 mph 29.38 3.29
Evergreen 39 mph 29.48 2.31
Tuscaloosa 29 mph 29.56 2.18
Montgomery 35 m ph 29.64 0.96
Birmingham 33 mph 29.65 0.85
Meridian MS 32 mph 29.69 2.83
Tupelo MS 28 mph 29.62 3.21

One to three inches of rain fell over about a 90 mile wide swath west of
I-65 all the way to Winston County. This area of heaviest rainfall was
centered on the track of the low.

MOVING FORWARD: Alabama remains in the midst of a tropical airmass in the
wake of Arlene. This airmass will lend itself to the development of
scattered showers and storms with the heating of the day, even this
afternoon and continuing through Tuesday. A rare mid-June cold front will
approach Alabama from the northwest on Wednesday, increasing our storm
chances Tuesday night and Wednesday. This front should make it through the
area, giving us drier and less humid conditions for the end of the week,
lasting into the weekend. The GFS model still hints at tropical development
over the Caribbean next week, curving it over Cuba and out into the
Atlantic.

SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK TODAY: Last week, a forecaster at the NWS Norman,
Oklahoma made the observation that this weekend featured the most classic
severe weather setup he had seen in 25 years. Every storm chaser in America
started to salivate. There were a couple of significant tornadoes on
Thursday, but Friday and Saturday featured very little in the way of severe
weather. A strong upper level disturbance will make today an active severe
weather day across the southern Plains, from Northwest Texas into western
Oklahoma. My friends Karen and Gene Rhoden will be heading out later to
catch some tornadoes in their natural habitat.

ON THIS DATE IN 1899: An F5 tornado struck the town of New Richmond,
Wisconsin, killing 117 people were killed and injuring over 200. The
circus was playing in New Richmond, which meant an additional 1000 people
were in town for the performances. Over 300 buildings were damaged or
destroyed as the tornado went straight through the center of town. Six
families had four or more members killed. A 3000-pound safe was blown a
full block. High visibility limited the death toll.
