...The Heat Cranks Up Again Today...

Birmingham’s high yesterday was 89 degrees, the warmest temperature so far this year. Up until yesterday, the hottest reading was 88 degrees, recorded on three days in June and two in May. There is a good chance we will see our first 90 degree temperature of the year today with a strong June sun. The air remains very dry over Alabama, and the chance of any one spot seeing an afternoon shower will remain very small.

RARE JUNE FRONT: We don’t like to call them a “cold” front this time of the year, but one will be passing through late tomorrow. Once again, due to the dry air, any showers or storms on the front should be few and far between. Then, we will enjoy lower humidity levels on Thursday and slightly cooler temperatures.

The models diverge a bit in the four to seven day time frame, but there is some hint an upper low will form over the southeast U.S., so we will bring the chance of scattered showers back into the forecast for Friday and the weekend.

TROPICAL UPDATE: A disturbed area of weather over the central Caribbean could develop into the season’s second tropical depression today. Currently, the disturbance is moving northwest, but later in the week as a major upper trough forms over the eastern U.S., whatever develops should begin to turn northward, and then northeast. This means the system probably won’t get anywhere close to Alabama, but as always, we will keep an eye on it. It could be a problem for Cuba or the southern part of Florida later in the week before the turn is made.

RAIN UPDATE: Thanks to Arlene, Birmingham’s rain total for the year so far is now 26.80”, only 0.23” short of being right at normal for June 14.
