GOOD AFTERNOON: Todays weather is brought to you by...the city of Marquette, Michigan. That is where the high pressure that is in control of our weather is centered this afternoon.
HOW BOUT THIS MORNINGS WEATHER? Check out these morning lows...
52 Fort Payne
54 Cullman
55 Pinson
59 Birmingham Airport
Get ready for another night like last night. Skies are mostly sunny this afternoon, with just a few puffy fair weather cumulus clouds around. Skies will be mostly clear overnight, with lows dropping into the upper 50s to near 60 in most locations once again.
SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like a fairly impressive copy of today, with mostly sunny skies, rain chances that are nearly nil, a few cumulus clouds, light northerly winds and temperatures in the middle 80s. The only real difference will be that humidity levels will be slightly higher, with dewpoints creeping back into the 60s from the comfortable 50s we are enjoying today.
MONDAY AND BEYOND: A large trough of low pressure extends along the East Coast of the United States. This trough is giving us the cool, dry northerly flow. There has been some uncertainty about the development of an upper low to the east of Alabama that would retrograde, or move back our way, giving shower chances to eastern sections. The latest model runs discount this possibility, weakening the trough with time and moving it out to the northeast, although there will be a slight chance of a shower Monday and Tuesday over Northeast Alabama. We should see only isolated PM storms Wednesday and Thursday and then only widely scattered afternoon and evening storms into the weekend. A ridge of high pressure over the middle of the country will slide to the east, setting up camp over Alabama and the South. This spells some hot weather ahead for late in the week into next week. We will see temperatures well into the 90s later this week into next week. Oh, boy...
ON THIS DATE IN 2001: An F3 tornado struck the small town of Siren, MN shortly before 8:30 p.m., killing 3 and injuring sixteen people along its 20 mile path. The twister damaged or destroyed nearly half of the towns 400 homes and 70 businesses. The NWS issued a tornado warning 50 minutes before the storm reached Siren. Ironically, Sirens warning siren had been knocked out by storms earlier in the spring and was scheduled for repair the week after the storm struck. It didnt matter anyway, because the power had gone out in the town about 20 minutes before the twister. This would have rendered Sirens sirens useless anyway. The Sheriff was actually going door-to-door before the tornado, warning townspeople.
An important lesson from the Siren storm: sirens should not be depended upon for receiving warnings. Everyone should determine what is the best source of weather information for them to monitor during potential severe weather: NOAA WeatherRadio, Commercial radio or television, etc.
