HELP US FIND "FOREVER FAMILIES"
FOR ALABAMA'S FOSTER CHILDREN

Heart Gallery Alabama helps find families for the 270+ children
currently in Alabama's foster care system who are waiting for
their "Forever Families."

Heart Gallery, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, recruits professional
photographers to capture the unique spirit of each child. They
interview the children and place their images and voices on a website
(http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com) and in traveling exhibits
throughout the state where prospective adoptive families can learn
more about them. Heart Gallery Alabama has helped find a
permanent home for 70 children.

Statistics show that children with involved fathers are more confident,
better able to deal with frustration, more likely to mature into
compassionate adults and to have a higher self esteem.

Would you consider becoming a permanent home for a child? Or making a
tax-deductible donation to help our mission? Any donation will help us
find permanent homes for these children.

Please call (205) 445-1293 or http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com
===================================================================

A northwesterly flow aloft is responsible for the anomalous shower and
thunderstorm development across the area this afternoon.
Disturbances rippling along in the flow are combining with a warm and
moist atmosphere and a stagnant boundary to fire the activity. The
northwesterly flow will continue through Sunday, but there are signs
that the deeper moisture will shift southeastward tonight. A drier
atmosphere means less in the way of showers and storms on Sunday.
There still will be a couple of storms tomorrow, but overall rain
chances will lessen. As the rain chances drop, the temperatures will
be on the rise.

THE HEAT IS ON: Signs are that most spots will be in the middle 90s
on Sunday. Get used to that, because it will be that way through
Wednesday. Middle 90s will be quite common, with occasional upper 90s
and a couple of readings at or above the century mark during the
period. Dewpoints will be in the middle 70s, so heat index values
will be in the 105-110 range on the hotter afternoons. A heat index
of 110F is the threshold for a heat advisory for us here in Central
Alabama. A temperature of 97F and a dewpoint of 74F will yield a heat
index of 110F.

HEAT SAFETY: It will be imperative that we review our heat safety
rules during the coming hot spell. Dress accordingly. Drink plenty
of liquids, but not alcohol. Eat lighter foods, including less
protein. Slow down. Take frequent breaks. Don't get too much sun.
If your home lacks air conditioning, spend time in a cool spot like a
mall or movie theatre during the hottest part of the day. Check on
elderly friends. If they dont have air conditioning, make sure
they have fans.

RAIN CHANCES: Storms should be more isolated on Sunday. This trend
will continue into the first half of the week with the chance of any
one location getting rain each day about 20-30%. By Thursday, the
high pressure system to our west will retrograde further west and a
big trough will start to form over the eastern United States. This
will allow a boundary over the Ohio Valley to slide southward,
increasing our rain chances on Thursday and Friday. We could see
additional thunderstorm complexes drifting along in the upper flow.
There are signs that boundary will slide down into South Alabama by
Saturday or Sunday, drying us back out just a tad.

TROPICS: A tropical wave is a little over one thousand miles east of
the Leeward Islands this afternoon. It is moving northwestward and
has little prospect for development and is no threat to any land area.
After a burst of activity earlier this month, the tropical Atlantic
has gone quiet. No real prospects for tropical development are seen
in the next two weeks.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Hurricane Danny dissipated on this date. No
other named tropical cyclone would be present in the Atlantic for the
next 38 days, lasting throughout August. 1961 was the only other year
since aircraft reconnaissance flights began in the 1940s to have no
Atlantic tropical storms in the month of August.

ON THIS DATE IN 1874: The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
experienced the worst weather disaster in its history as a flash flood
claimed 134 lives. The flash flood was produced by slow moving
thunderstorms that dumped heavy rain on the hills of the city. The
worst flooding occurred in Allegheny City, just northwest of
Pittsburgh.

...More Storms Today...

Showers and storms were fairly numerous across Alabama on Friday, but
rainfall amounts were generally light. Some of the heavier amounts
were along the Tennessee River south of Huntsville over to near
Decatur, near Jacksonville in East Alabama and along the Tuscaloosa/
Jefferson County line around Vance and areas to the north. The big
winners in the rainfall department were over Franklin County north of
Vina and over Fayette County near Fayette. Radar estimates indicated
that as much as five inches of rain may have fallen in those areas by
the slow moving storms.

MORE STORMS TODAY: The increase in showers and storms on Friday was
due to a weak frontal boundary that sagged down into Alabama,
providing the focus for the weather. That front is still around today,
and it will produce another batch of showers and storms by late
morning, lasting through the afternoon and evening hours. No
especially strong storms are anticipated, although many of the storms
will mean business with torrential rains and deadly lightning. Highs
today will be heavily dependent on rainfall. Areas that get rain
early may struggle to reach 90F, while sunnier areas will be warmer.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Showers and storms should be less
numerous on Sunday as the front washes out and a ridge of high
pressure builds into Alabama. This trend will continue into the first
half of the week, with low rain chances and temperatures that will be
heating up.

THE HEAT IS ON: Highs on Sunday will climb into the middle 90s. This
will be the start of some really hot weather. By Monday, upper 90s
will be common and the century mark will be likely for many locations
on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some places may see highs in the 105F
range, especially over western sections of the state. The heat will
back off by Thursday into the weekend as the high pressure ridge
retreats westward. Expect pretty typical summertime fare as we head
toward the weekend.

TROPICS: That impressive tropical wave that came off
the African coast early this week has been traversing cool water and
has not shown any signs of development. It is a little less than
1,000 miles east of the Leeward Islands this morning, steaming west
northwest or northwest. In addition to the cool water, the system has
been battling some wind shear and it is surrounded by dry air. It
will eventually move into an area that is more favorable for
development, however. Elsewhere, the tropical Atlantic is quiet with
one wave that has just moved off the African Coast and another over
the eastern Caribbean. The GFS shows no tropical development over the
next two weeks.

ON THIS DATE IN 1977: The city of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania experienced the worst weather disaster in its history as
a flash flood claimed 134 lives. The flash flood was produced by slow
moving thunderstorms that dumped heavy rain on the hills of the city.
The worst flooding occurred in Allegheny City, just northwest of
Pittsburgh.

Any donation will help us
find permanent homes for these children.

...In The Heart Of Our Summer...

HOTTER TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEK: Alabama weather is now behaving like
it is supposed to for late July and heading toward early August. If
you consider long-term averages, this is traditionally our hottest
time of the year. It does not have to be.

On this date in 1952, it was a sizzling 106 in Birmingham as we
suffered through a drought and heat wave during that period only to
repeat in 1954. In Cullman, the thermometer suffered a high of 108 on
July 29, in 1952. Muscle Shoals received only 3.83 inches of rain all
summer. Part of South Alabama went 40 to 50 days in a row with no
measurable rain. The Lower Cahaba and Lower Alabama rivers dropped to
an all-time record stream flow.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: Scattered showers and thunderstorms initiated by
midday over extreme NE Alabama. This was mainly because a weak frontal
zone pushed into that area and stopped overnight. The storms were
continuing to develop this afternoon. For tomorrow, an upper-level
disturbance will be partially involved and we look for a better chance
of showers and thunderstorms. A few of those could be strong. For
Sunday and well into next week, there will be a chance of a shower or
thunderstorm each afternoon, although they may thin out greatly by
Tuesday. We are also headed for some hotter temperatures early in the
week. Our current forecast calls for a high of 97 Tuesday.

TROPICAL: What was left of Hurricane Dolly was moving westward near
the Mexican/Texas border passing south of the Texas Big Bend country.
Still some locally heavy rain in that area. Dolly dumped as much as 12
inches of rain in extreme South Texas. Remember, she moved across the
extreme SW part of the Gulf of Mexico, so she did not by any means tap
all the energy from the 600,000 square miles of water. There is still
plenty of high-octane fuel in the Gulf awaiting something to develop
or something to move in from the Caribbean. No signs of that now.

SEVERE WEATHER: New England suffered a real blow from severe weather
yesterday. A possible tornado established a 25-mile track through the
center of New Hampshire and at least one person was killed. Numerous
homes were destroyed or damaged. That corner of the USA has had a very
active year. Not only did Caribou, Maine record the most snow on
record during the winter, but the whole region has been wet. In the
last 2 days, 6.15 inches of rain fell at New Kingston, New York. The
Middle West is also getting an overdose of rain. 8.28 inches at
Kirksville, Missouri in the last 24 hours. St. Louis now has a one-
foot excess of rain this year.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Our dear friend, the Gulf of Mexico, contains an
estimated 643 quadrillion gallons of water. No wonder she affects our
weather so much. Hottest in the USA yesterday was 120 in Death Valley.
It was 33 this morning at, you guessed it, Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I think we should rename our
street, Little Miss Molly Avenue. She is one of the very best known
creatures on this street. On our walk very early this morning, we met
Carolyn, one of our neighbours, and she broke into a big smile 20
yards away. Molly has that affect on everyone. Everybody that knows
Molly loves her except about two people and those two do not like any
dogs. I totally respect that. The little girl is changing slowly. She
now does site preparation on 4 different parts of the king-size bed
before going to sleep. Life goes on.

...Routine Summer Weather For Alabama...

THE SUMMER ROUTINE: Alabama will settle into a very routine summer
weather pattern for the next seven days, featuring all of the elements
you expect this time of the year. Heat, haze, humidity, and afternoon
showers and storms. The chance of any one spot getting wet over the
next few days is about one in three, and unfortunately there is little
skill in identifying placement and coverage of afternoon showers and
storms days in advance. In fact, we can't tell you exactly when and
where it is going to rain on a summer afternoon in the morning
forecast package, so you hear the words "scattered afternoon
thunderstorms" very often this time of the year.

Afternoon highs are creeping up; we expect highs in the 92 to 96
degree range over the weekend and through much of next week. Still no
sign of any long period of excessive heat for the next two weeks (we
define excessive heat as upper 90s or hotter). Looks like the hottest
weather will be west of Alabama, over Texas and Oklahoma, under a
strong upper air high anchored near the Red River.

TROPICAL NOTES: Moisture associated with former tropical storm Dolly
will work up into the Southwest U.S. over the weekend, enhancing the
monsoon rain pattern for Arizona and New Mexico. Elsewhere in the
tropics, the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet. A tropical wave is
about 800 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands in the Central
Atlantic; development of this system is
not expected in the short term due to hostile upper air winds and
cooler ocean water at that latitude.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Expect about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day
along the Central Gulf Coast through early next week, with the daily
opportunity of a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. The ocean
water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab late yesterday was a
toasty 89 degrees. No tropical weather systems are expected to
influence the Gulf Coast through most of next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: The high in Birmingham was 106 degrees on July
25, 1952, as we were in the midst of a serious heat wave. Record
highs, all in the triple digits, were recorded on six days in a row.
The average high in July 1952 was 96 degrees. Nine days had over 100
including 7 days in a row. The summers of both 1952 and 1954 were
exceptionally hot and featured a drought. (Heat waves and droughts are
first cousins) Some Alabama wells went dry that had never been dry
before.

DOG DAYS: The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the
Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11,
coinciding with the ancient heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog
Star, Sirius. A casual survey will usually find that many people
believe the phrase is in reference to the conspicuous laziness of
domesticated dogs (who are in danger of overheating with too much
exercise) during the hottest days of the summer. When speaking of "Dog
Days" there seems to be a connotation of lying or "dogging" around, or
being "dog tired" on these hot and humid days. (From Wikipedia)

...No Day Totally Free of Showers...

THERMOMETER WANTS TO GO UP AGAIN: This is the time of year when there
are not very many days that a shower or thunderstorm does not develop
somewhere around the vast landscape. If we try to determine which day
several days down the road will have the best chance, it is very
difficult.

A close study of some of our semi most trusted weather models points
out that ridge aloft will be developing to the north and NW of Alabama
during the next several days. This will cause the winds aloft over
Alabama to be out of the NW. This always raises an extra caution flag
for us. We have to watch out for clusters of big thunderstorms
migrating around the top of that ridge and heading SE toward Alabama
from places like Missouri and Arkansas. Those can pack a mean punch.
We are not saying for sure that is going to happen, but it is always a
possibility.

Meanwhile, we have a chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the
forecast each day all the way through the weekend and into early next
week. On most of those days, the chance for any one address in Central
Alabama is about 1 in 3. A ridge aloft, life we just mentioned, also
tends to make it a bit hotter across Alabama, especially if the ridge
gets over us. We do not see any more of the nasty 100-degree heat
right away, but by late in the weekend and early next week we may have
some mid 90s.

TODAY IN ALABAMA: Drier air moved into the north part of the state
overnight and some low temperatures this morning were close to 60 in
some of the traditional cooler spots. This means that the better
chance of any showers or thunderstorms for the remainder of this
afternoon and evening will be over SW and South Alabama. Some fairly
strong storms were already moving SE across Sumter County and other
widely scattered ones dotted the South Alabama countryside.

STORMS YESTERDAY: They did not finally pass out until around midnight
in a broad zone across Central Alabama. Here are a few rain reports
not previously listed:

3.51 Wadley (Randolph County)
2.12 Jackson (Clarke County)
1.06 Sylacauga

TROPICAL: Miss Dolly sure did cause some huge headaches after moving
in on the lower Texas coast yesterday. Today she was crossing Laredo,
Texas and picking up speed moving westward. She will dissipate before
much longer. One of the biggest rain totals I can find for just the
last 24 hours was an even 12 inches at San Manuel in South Texas. Lots
and lots of flooding.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 118 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday. USA
low this morning was shared by Meacham, Oregon and Barrow, Alaska. The
summer of 2008 is on track to produce the fewest number of days ever
recorded when the high temperature in Anchorage managed to reach 65.
They have had only 7 days with 65 or warmer so far.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is not the only cute
little dog in our community by any means. There is a little Dachshund
2 houses away and another charming Shih-tzu across the traffic circle.
Only 4 houses away is the little young Yorkie. He and Molly are deeply
in love. Molly is also in love with Jo-Jo, a beautiful middle-size
dog, who lives just in back of us. He is the one that got run over by
a car last year and was missing for several weeks. Life goes on.

...Drier Air Works Into Alabama Today...

ONLY ISOLATED SHOWERS TODAY: Following two days of strong
thunderstorms and heavy downpours, drier air slips into the northern
half of Alabama today. Dewpoints will drop into the mid 60s, and the
drier means that many communities will be rain-free through the day.
Any showers or thunderstorms that form this afternoon will be very
widely spaced, and the best chance of showers will be over the
southern counties. With a good supply of sunshine, temperatures should
reach the low 90s this afternoon, near average values for mid to late
July in Alabama. The lower humidity will make the day somewhat
comfortable for mid-summer.

THE DAYS AHEAD: Moisture levels will slowly rise tomorrow and over the
weekend, putting our state in a routine summer weather pattern for the
weekend. Partly sunny days along with the chance of scattered showers
and storms during the peak of the daytime heating process. Afternoon
highs will be in the 90 to 95 degree range through Sunday. The setup
should remain generally the same into early next week, and we still
see no sign of any long lasting, excessive heat wave for Alabama
through mid-August. Sure looks like the summer of 2008 will be
considerably "cooler" than the summer of 2007. Nobody is complaining
about that…

TOPIC: TROPICS: Dolly slammed into the far southern Texas coast
yesterday packing sustained winds of 100 mph, and bringing heavy rain
and flooding to places like Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen. The
system is now a tropical storm, and will continue to bring the threat
of flash flooding over far South Texas today. Dolly will finally rain
herself out over the mountains of northern Mexico by the weekend, but
some of the moisture could wind up over the Southwest U.S., helping to
enhance their monsoon season that is now in progress. Rain totals from
yesterday and last night included 6.29" at Brownsville, 3.55" at
Harlingen, and 2.26" at McAllen.

Elsewhere, a well organized tropical wave is in the eastern Atlantic,
several hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. Development of
this system in the short term is not expected due to cool ocean water.
And, most likely this wave will be recurving out over the open
Atlantic before reaching the Caribbean Islands or the U.S. mainland.

MORE SUMMER SOAKERS: Rain totals from yesterday included 1.46" at
Weaver, 1.20" at Pelham, 1.11" at Troy, 1.05" at Weaver, and .93" at
Montgomery. Nickel sized hail was reported with the storm at Weaver,
in Calhoun County north of Anniston.

THE YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER: That is how ABC 33/40 Skywatcher Todd Foisy
has described this year; Todd lives in Girdwood, Alaska. Here is his
report from yesterday: "High 48.9/Low 45.0/Current 48.1/Rain 0.82"
Another ridiculously chilly day. A decent amount of new snow above
4000'."

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Wednesday July 23, 2008

=========================================================

Or making
a tax-deductible donation to help our mission? Any donation will help us
find permanent homes for these children.

Please call (205) 445-1293 or http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com
=========================================================

NO 100-DEGREE HEAT: All those thunderstorms yesterday sort of worked
over our atmosphere and made it a little more stable. Net result is
that so far today, showers and storms have been much fewer in number
over the north and central part of the state. We should not cheer too
quickly, because some fairly strong storms were moving down from
Middle Tennessee toward the Tennessee Valley at midafternoon. We
cannot rule out some isolated strong storms.

Down south, showers and thunderstorms were fairly numerous—mostly
south of Montgomery down to the coast. Most of those were moving
toward the SE.

The old thermometer is being a little more reasonable. At 2:00 p.m.,
temperatures were mostly between 84 and 88 over the north half of the
state, but Tuscaloosa had already reached 94. That is a lot better
than the 98 to 102-degree heat that parts of the state experienced for
several days in a row.

REST OF THE WEEK: We will maintain daily highs between 92 and 94
across Central Alabama. We believe that the chance of a shower or
storm tomorrow will be very small. We will still have some each day
through the weekend, but we think they will be widely scattered on
most days with no big batch of showers and storms like we have had the
last two days. There was scattered wind damage across the state in the
storms yesterday including a number of trees uprooted. Many
communities received beneficial rain. Here are a few examples of some
of the heavier amounts:

1.68 Pleasant Grove
1.82 Centre
1.38 Logan Martin Dam
2.25 Selma
2.20 near Clanton
2.15 Roanoke
4.35 South of Tuscumbia

TROPICAL WEATHER: It was very interesting to watch Hurricane Dolly
make landfall in extreme South Texas this morning. When she got close
to the coast, she tarried a bit and finally went inland north of
Brownsville. She will start to weaken now, but still causing a lot of
problems. Her slow westward movement will allow tons of rain that will
cause flash flooding well inland. The Governor of Texas has declared
14 South Texas counties disaster areas. Wind gusts of 74 mph recorded
at Harlingen and 67 mph at Brownsville. Elsewhere, a large tropical
wave over the far Eastern Atlantic is moving west at 15 to 20.
Development not expected, at least for a couple of days.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am way, way behind on playtime with my
little 9-pound pal who has got me wrapped me around her paws like a
Band-Aid. This is the third day in a row that I have given her almost
no attention. Thunderstorms play a double whammy. They keep me real
busy while they also scare the living daylights out of Molly. They do
not seem to bother her as much as they used to, because she now has
staked out 4 hiding places at the first sound of thunder. She is a
smart little rascal. Life goes on......

...Heat Levels Back Down...

NOT AS HOT: Our mini heat wave is over for now as temperatures will
back to average levels for late July in coming days. In fact, some
places around here might not get out of the 80s due to clouds,
showers, and thunderstorms. We will mention a good chance of scattered
to numerous showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today thanks to a
surface front approaching from the north. The air across Alabama today
won't be as unstable as yesterday (thanks to cooler daytime
temperatures), but we will still have the chance of strong storms this
afternoon with lots of lightning and the potential for wet
microbursts. While the best chance of thunderstorms will come this
afternoon, we can't rule out a few morning showers in scattered spots.
Additional rain totals today should be between one-half and one inch
for most Alabama communities.

Drier air will begin to creep into North Alabama tonight, and it now
looks like any showers and storms tomorrow and Friday will be rather
widely scattered around here. And, for the weekend, we are forecasting
very routine summer weather with partly sunny days, the chance of
scattered showers and storms during the afternoon, and highs generally
in the low 90s on Saturday and Sunday.

DOLLY MAKING LANDFALL: Hurricane Dolly will make landfall this morning
somewhere near the mouth of the Rio Grande, or at the Mexico/U.S.
border right at the southern tip of Texas. There remains a chance that
Dolly could be a category two storm at the time of landfall; rain
amounts of 5 to 10 inches are likely across the lower Rio Grande
Valley today and tonight with flash flooding likely. Winds to 75 mph
will be felt in places like Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen. And,
a few isolated tornadoes are possible in the spiral bands rotating
around the center of Dolly. The system will move westward, and rain
itself out over the mountains of northern Mexico during the next 24 to
36 hours.

OTHER TROPICAL NOTES: Tropical storm Cristobal will become extra-
tropical today in the colder water of the North Atlantic, and out in
the far eastern Atlantic a well organized wave is just west of the
Cape Verde Islands. This one will have a hard time growing stronger
today due to cooler ocean water, and it is also in a position to
ultimately recurve into the open Atlantic before having a chance to
impact the Caribbean Islands or the U.S. mainland.

CELEBRATE THE RAIN: Rain totals across Alabama yesterday included
1.97" at Scrougeout (NE Etowah County, northeast of Gasdsden), 1.70"
at Chelsea, 1.44" at Union Grove in Chilton County, 1.41" at the
Shelby County Airport in Calera, 1.25" at Glencoe, 1.24" at Inverness,
and 0.57" at Auburn. The total at the Birmingham International Airport
was only a trace. One person was injured in Roanoke when a tree
crashed into a mobile home.
