...Routine Summer Weather For Alabama...

THE SUMMER ROUTINE: Alabama will settle into a very routine summer
weather pattern for the next seven days, featuring all of the elements
you expect this time of the year. Heat, haze, humidity, and afternoon
showers and storms. The chance of any one spot getting wet over the
next few days is about one in three, and unfortunately there is little
skill in identifying placement and coverage of afternoon showers and
storms days in advance. In fact, we can't tell you exactly when and
where it is going to rain on a summer afternoon in the morning
forecast package, so you hear the words "scattered afternoon
thunderstorms" very often this time of the year.

Afternoon highs are creeping up; we expect highs in the 92 to 96
degree range over the weekend and through much of next week. Still no
sign of any long period of excessive heat for the next two weeks (we
define excessive heat as upper 90s or hotter). Looks like the hottest
weather will be west of Alabama, over Texas and Oklahoma, under a
strong upper air high anchored near the Red River.

TROPICAL NOTES: Moisture associated with former tropical storm Dolly
will work up into the Southwest U.S. over the weekend, enhancing the
monsoon rain pattern for Arizona and New Mexico. Elsewhere in the
tropics, the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet. A tropical wave is
about 800 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands in the Central
Atlantic; development of this system is
not expected in the short term due to hostile upper air winds and
cooler ocean water at that latitude.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Expect about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day
along the Central Gulf Coast through early next week, with the daily
opportunity of a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. The ocean
water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab late yesterday was a
toasty 89 degrees. No tropical weather systems are expected to
influence the Gulf Coast through most of next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1952: The high in Birmingham was 106 degrees on July
25, 1952, as we were in the midst of a serious heat wave. Record
highs, all in the triple digits, were recorded on six days in a row.
The average high in July 1952 was 96 degrees. Nine days had over 100
including 7 days in a row. The summers of both 1952 and 1954 were
exceptionally hot and featured a drought. (Heat waves and droughts are
first cousins) Some Alabama wells went dry that had never been dry
before.

DOG DAYS: The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the
Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11,
coinciding with the ancient heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog
Star, Sirius. A casual survey will usually find that many people
believe the phrase is in reference to the conspicuous laziness of
domesticated dogs (who are in danger of overheating with too much
exercise) during the hottest days of the summer. When speaking of "Dog
Days" there seems to be a connotation of lying or "dogging" around, or
being "dog tired" on these hot and humid days. (From Wikipedia)
