==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: as you look at weather maps and satellite photos of the
southeastern United States this afternoon, you are sure to notice a
relatively fast westerly upper level flow. Expanding that view, you notice
a huge split flow in the upper atmosphere, flowing around high pressure
centered over Utah and Wyoming. That westerly flow over Alabama and the
Deep South is part of the southerly branch of that split flow.
Closer to the surface, winds are shifted to the northwest behind a weak
frontal system that is pushing across the region. The front extended from
near Huntsville to west of Birmingham at early afternoon. About the only
thing you will notice with the frontal passage will be the wind shift. The
significantly drier air is about 200 miles behind the front, where dew
points have dropped into the upper 50s across western Tennessee. That drier
air will arrive in here late tonight and Sunday. Tomorrow should feature
clearing skies and temperatures rising to near 80 degrees across the area.
Perfect weather for the huge NASCAR race at Talladega.

STORM CHANCES: Radars across the South getting a light workday so far. In
East Tennessee, showers are showing up in association with an upper
disturbance. They will depart that area in time for the huge tilt tonight
between Auburn and the Vols. Things are clear across the rest of Tennessee,
Alabama and Mississippi, except for a little persistent light rain near the
northwestern corner of our state. A few light showers were trying to form
over Lamar and Fayette County earlier. Most of the activity has been over
southern Texas today, but a few showers and storms were forming over eastern
Arkansas under the cooler air aloft in the upper level trough. That cooler
air aloft means more unstable air. Those storms will continue to break out
as the trough pushes eastward, but the instability will diminish as we head
into the early evening, losing the heat of the sun. So there may be a few
scattered showers across the area during the evening hours tonight. Some of
those could affect the 'Bama game, but chances are still small. The
overnight hours should feature decreasing clouds and northwesterly winds.
Lows will drop to just above 60 degrees if that drier air gets in here in
time.

WEEK AHEAD: The front should push on to the southeast, clearing our area
and leaving us in mostly sunny conditions for Monday. A stronger cold front
will push through the area Monday night, dropping high temperatures back
into the 70s on Tuesday. This will start a dry and mild period of weather
that will last to the end of the week. The GFS continues to bring the
tropical disturbance currently over the Caribbean back to the north over the
Gulf by late in the week. Some forecaster humans are starting to buy into
that solution, taking a low pressure system to the Louisiana coast next
Saturday. The GFS tracks it eastward along the northern Gulf to western
Florida by the weekend. Any of these scenarios will likely spread rain
back into the state for the weekend.

TROPICS: Speaking of the tropics, up and down Lisa was still a hurricane at
late morning, but will lose her tropical characteristics tonight as she
races to the northeast over the open waters of the Atlantic.

...Nothing To Watch In Tropics...

GOOD MORNING! What? No tropical systems threatening our corner of the
globe? What is the world coming to? There is Lisa, out in the Atlantic.
I told you two weeks ago that she would become a hurricane. She finally
did at 5 p.m. yesterday. By 10 p.m., she had already weakened back to a
tropical storm. On the late afternoon tropical weather outlook, the
National hurricane Center indicated the hurricane was 9080 miles west of the
Azores. That would be over Siberia or somewhere. I think they meant 980
miles. You can't blame those heroes at the NHC for being a little tired.

OUR FORECAST: There is a cold front out there to the northwest this
morning. It was responsible for some strong storms across North Texas last
evening. Moisture and instability will be present across the area today,
allowing widely scattered thunderstorms to form. There will be a fairly
significant amount of wind shear present, so some of the storms could be a
little on the strong side. The front should pass through the area during
the afternoon, although a few showers could remain through the evening
hours. Sunday should feature sun and some clouds with the front stalling
over southern sections. Showers should be limited to that area. Another
front will arrive Monday night, but it will be dry. Most of the rest of the
week should be dry and pleasant as a broad area of high pressure covers the
southeastern United States, but the GFS hints at a tropical disturbance
moving northeast over the Gulf that could affect our weather by the weekend.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: There will be a chance of a shower in Knoxville as
Auburn takes on Tennessee. Temperatures during the game will drop through
the 60s. UAB travels to Cincinnati. It will be chilly during the game
there, with readings falling into the 40s. It should be dry. The Crimson
Tide welcomes the South Carolina Gamecocks late this afternoon. There will
be a chance of a shower early. Temperatures will be around 80 at kickoff,
falling into the lower 70s by the end of the game.

==================================================================

WEATHER WE BRAG ABOUT: It was truly another Chamber of Commerce day across
Alabama. Early morning low temperatures were in the upper 40s and 50s,
except 60s around Mobile. By afternoon, very comfortable.

Overall we can expect a lot more of that type weather thanks to two cold
fronts that will move through the area-one on Saturday and another Monday
night. Does this mean showers and storms? We think the second front will be
dry, but there is a slight chance of a shower tomorrow and tomorrow evening.
We think most areas will remain dry. By Sunday, mostly sunny weather will
return as it turns cooler again. See our day-by-day forecast.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Near perfect for tonight's high school football. On
Saturday, South Carolina is at Alabama for a 5 pm start. It should be near
80 at kickoff and low 70s at the final whistle. The risk of a shower is very
small. UAB will be at Cincinnati for a 6 pm game. Mostly clear, chilly
weather with about 50 at kickoff falling into the mid 40s. Be advised, if
you are traveling there, the overnight low Saturday night will be 38. One of
the biggest games will be Auburn at Tennessee with a 6:45 pm game. We expect
68 at kick off and 62 in the fourth quarter. Only a slight chance of a
shower. Down in SE Alabama, Troy University will host Utah State for an
afternoon game. The high should be 88 with only a slight chance of a shower.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Lisa-just under hurricane strength-was way
far out and moving northward into the North Atlantic. She will only bother
fish at sea-maybe giving some big whales a headache. We look now to a
tropical wave in the Central Caribbean south of Jamaica. No sign of
circulation, but it could slowly increase over the weekend as it gets into a
friendlier neighborhood in the Western Caribbean. If it eventually became a
tropical storm, the name would be Matthew.

SWEEPING OFF MY DESK: A big blast of unusually cold air for so early in the
season will be sweeping down across the Northern Plains and Northern
Rockies. There was already a hard freeze in parts of Montana this morning
with 17 at Jordan and Wolf Point. The latter is located out on the open
plains of NE Montana where the only thing holding back the cold north wind
is a barbed wire fence.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A great outpouring of sympathy for our friend
who recently lost her 15-year-old Nikki. I will forward the messages. I will
also reply to all of the emails...temporarily behind, but I will catch
up...out well before sunrise this morning to go help with some work at
church. A fantastic sunrise with only one small patch of cirrus clouds about
30,000 feet off the ground, but in exactly the right place...I haven't seen
little Miss Molly all day...she is at the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) getting a
trim...didn't have time to play with her last night, but I will certainly
catch up in the near future...editoralizing a bit again. I think it's
unfortunane that our pets don't live as long as we do. It would be fantastic
to grow old together and it would save us humans a lot of sorrow, but life
goes on. We enjoy them even with their short life.

...The Chance of Rain Stays Small...

The chance of rain will stay quite small around here through the weekend,
despite a cold front that is expected in here tomorrow evening. We have
adjusted temperatures upward a bit for Sunday and Monday, as it now looks
like the really cool air won't arrive until a secondary front rolls through
on Monday night. Showers will remain very scarce with that second front as
well.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama will host South Carolina tomorrow evening (5:00
kickoff); just a very slim risk of a shower during the game, with the
kickoff temperature near 80, falling through the 70s during the game. Auburn
travels to Knoxville to play the Vols tomorrow evening at 6:45; temperatures
will drop from about 70 at kickoff into the 60s during the game. Just a
small risk of a shower at Neyland Stadium.

UAB will be on the road, taking on Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. The
weather will be cool and breezy with a chance of showers, and temperatures
in the 60s.

RACE WEEKEND: At the Talladega Superspeedway, only about a one in ten chance
of a brief shower tomorrow for the Food World 300. Then, on Sunday for the
EA Sports 500, the sky should be partly sunny with temperatures peaking
around 80 degrees.

TROPICS: Two disturbances are worth watching over the weekend; one in the
central Caribbean, and the other in the Atlantic about 400 miles east of the
Windward Islands. And, tropical storm Lisa continues to drift around in the
north Atlantic not bothering anyone.

COLDER DAYS: Today's forecast high in Anchorage, AK is only 36 degrees.
Alabama's cold spot yesterday morning was Hartselle with a chilly 42
degrees.

ANOTHER SPARKLING AUTUMN DAY: You would have to be an old grouch not to
enjoy today's weather. Overall the weather still looks good for the next 5
to 7 days with some minor interruptions.

Moisture is still quite limited and even though a cold front will reach our
area Saturday, we don't expect very many showers. However, we can't rule out
a slight risk of a shower Saturday. After that, clouds will decrease on
Sunday. Latest weather data indicates that the Saturday cold front will tend
to slow down in South Alabama and wait for a stronger cold front the middle
of next week. This was our coolest morning since last spring. We just have
to celebrate with these low temperatures:

42 in Hartselle
44 at Little River Canyon, DeSoto State Park
46 in Cullman, Ft. Payne, Scottsboro
47 in Russellville and Huntsville
48 in Pinson, Gadsden, Fayette, Jasper
50 in Anniston
51 in Birmingham
52 in Tuscaloosa

TROPICAL WEATHER: Oops. We hate to mention this, but the Central Caribbean
is getting a bit nervous again. A tropical wave in that area may grow a
little stronger as it reaches the NW Caribbean in about two days where water
temperatures are in the mid-80s-plenty warm enough for tropical development.

If it does become a tropical storm, its name will be Matthew.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB is at Cincinnati Saturday. It should be breezy with
some scattered showers and temperatures in the 60s. South Carolina will be
at Alabama for a late afternoon kick off. The chance of a shower is very
small and temperatures will fall into the 70s during the game. Auburn will
be in Knoxville to play Tennessee at 6:45 p.m. There is a slight chance of a
shower with temperatures falling into the 60s.

RAMBLING THOUGHTS: I still love strange sounding places. Before Jeanne
moved off the Atlantic Seaboard, she dumped 11.8 inches of rain at Busted
Rock, Virginia...hottest in the USA yesterday was 95 at Phoenix and Gila
Bend in Arizona and at Needles and Death Valley in California...lows this
morning 27 in Pellston and Big Rapids, Michigan and zero at Anaktuvuk Pass,
Alaska...the coldest air of the season will be pushing down into the U.S.
from Central Canada in the next day or so. Places in Minnesota and the
Dakotas will have highs only in the 40s with north winds up to 40 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since I started writing this tiny paragraph
from my tiny corner, it has been mostly about our little Miss Molly. We have
received over 2,000 e-mails and I appreciate them all. Only one has been
highly critical earlier this week. There have been occasions when we
sympathized with people who shared the bad news of losing their pet. One of
our most faithful readers and a good friend, just lost her delightful little
white 12-pound Peek-A-Poo named Nikki. She had the most adoring black eyes.

The person found her walking apparently lost on a hot August morning over 12
years ago. When she died this week, she was in the arms of her owner with
tears streaming down the owner's face onto the little dog. She will be
buried in her own backyard in her rubbermaid box complete with pillow and
little white blanket. There is a lesson in all this. I am a strong person
emotionally, but if something were to happen to Molly, I would cry like a
baby. If I may editorialize, let us all try not to get so busy that we have
to ration the time we spend with our pets who love us through thick and
thin.

... September Ends On A Dry Day...

For most Alabama communities, this will be the 13th day in a row with no
rain, and the long dry spell will likely continue into the coming weekend.
Temperatures will remain very comfortable, very close to normal levels for
late September and early October.

We are still expecting a cold front to pass through the state on Saturday,
but the computer models continue to suggest that the air will be extremely
dry, and the chance of any one spot getting a brief shower is only about one
in ten.

A nice surge of cool air will roll into the state on Sunday following the
front; possibly the coolest air so far this fall. Some of the colder valley
locations in north Alabama could wind up in the upper 40s early Monday and
Tuesday.

A DRY MONTH: October is normally the driest month in Birmingham. Our rain
for the month averages only 3.23". Not a drop of rain fell during the entire
month of October in 1924.

RACE WEEKEND: The news is good for NASCAR fans coming in for the races this
weekend at the Talladega Superspeedway. Only a very remote chance of a
shower on Saturday, otherwise a partly sunny sky is likely with daytime
temperatures peaking in the mid 80s. On Sunday, we expect ample sunshine
with afternoon temperatures only in the mid 70s along with a fresh
northerly breeze and low humidity. The weather will be dry for qualifying
today and tomorrow with a good deal of sunshine.

FRIGID AIR: Much colder air will invade the U.S. from Canada over the next
five days. Denver could see a mix of rain and snow by tomorrow night, and
parts of North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin could see their first light
snow of the season by early Saturday.

CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS: Two weeks ago today we were rushing to get
ready for Hurricane Ivan who came ashore very early on September 16 and the
rest is history on what we had that Thursday. Now, we're experiencing
weather on the opposite end of the totem pole and it could hardly be better.
Only thing...we're beginning to seriously need some rain. We have gone
almost two weeks without a drip. The cooler air that spread southward
overnight brought some nice cool temperatures this morning. A few examples:

51 in Hartselle
52 in Decatur and Meridianville
54 in Ft. Payne
55 in Cullman, Moulton, Little River Canyon
56 in Pinson and DeSoto State Park
59 in Anniston and Birmingham
62 in Tuscaloosa

RACE WEEKEND: It's that time again over at the Talladega Super Speedway. The
only chance of rain will probably be later Saturday. The chance is so small
that we almost took it out of the forecast. Few, if any, showers are
expected and this will be followed by sunny and cooler weather on Sunday.
Meanwhile, we also expect dry weather Thursday and Friday. We will have
football weather in tomorrow's editions.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: With all the tropical weather out of the way, we will
try to catch up on some other stories next week. With the assistance of a
gentleman from the University of Montevallo we are going to try to estimate
how much the rain weighed that fell on Alabama during one of the recent
tropical systems...in Jeanne's last gasp, she dumped 4.14 inches of rain on
New York City in the last 24 hours and 5.70 inches at Wilmington, Del., and
Nantucket, Massachusetts. About 2.50 inches fell on Boston, Harrisburg, Pa.,
and the nation's capitol...24 at Hibbing, Minnesota was the coldest in the
lower 48 this morning...in Alaska it was an even zero at appropriately named
Arctic Village...it will be around 25 tonight around Aspen and Vail,
Colorado with snow showers. Even Denver may get a mix of rain and snow
Friday night...on this date in 1965, 16.85 inches of rain caused $25 million
in flood damage at Mobile. It was because Tropical Storm Debbie was
approaching the coast.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly rang the miniature cowbell on
the back doorknob early last night. She sounded like Avon calling. I quickly
went walking with her because I wanted to see the second installment of the
harvest moon. Nature never disappoints. The big moon was peaking in and out
of a broken layer of altocumulus clouds at about 10,000 feet. The Old Crow
Motel looked like a Thomas Kinkade painting back lighted by the moon and
clouds. That old dilapidated tree will never make the cover of Outdoor
Alabama, a beautiful magazine that I have subscribed to for years. I wished

I had my trusty 26-year-old Nikon with me last night. We saw a freshly
constructed spider web hanging from the lower limbs of a tree. It made a
pretty scene as it glistened in the back light of the moon. A one-minute
time exposure would have made a great picture. When Molly took me walking
this morning it was full speed ahead. Sometimes I call that little girl,
NASCAR Molly. Life goes on at greatly variable speeds. We love life at any
speed!

...Rain Hard To Find Around Here...

After receiving anywhere from five to ten inches from Hurricane Ivan
on September 16, hardly a drop of rain has fallen on Alabama, and the chance
of significant rain looks small for the rest of the week. A little moisture
will creep in here by Friday, but for now we are not going to mention any
chance of rain in our formal forecast.

THE WEEKEND: A rather vigorous cold front is forecast to swing
through here Saturday night, and that could squeeze out a few showers. But,
the moisture will be very limited and any rain should be fairly light and
spotty. Not enough to put a major damper on outdoor events like football
games, NASCAR races (this is race weekend at Talladega), and arts and crafts
shows.

On Sunday, the coolest air so far this young fall season will roll
into the state on brisk northwest winds. The latest model output suggests
high temperatures on Sunday will be only in the mid 70s, and the mercury
approaching 50 degrees by early Monday morning of next week. We would not be
surprised if some places wind up in the 45 to 49 degree range by early
Tuesday.

THE TROPICS: Tropical storm Lisa is moving northward through the
central Atlantic and is no threat to land. Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin is
quiet for a change.

HARVEST MOON: Anyone get a glimpse of the big, full harvest moon
last night? The full moon closest to the equinox is called the "harvest
moon", and over the decades has given farmers an extra dose of lighting as
they harvest their crops at this time of the year.

SOAKERS: The remnants of tropical storm Jeanne dropped 4.67" of rain
on Roanoke, VA yesterday. Wilmington, DE picked up 3.43", while the total at
Washington, DC was 2.41".

==================================================================

NICE WEATHER THROUGH THURSDAY: We are very happy to report that
there are no more tropical storms or hurricanes on the horizon that will
threaten the hurricane plagued SE. Instead, here in Alabama some drier air
was slowly spreading down from the NW and our temperatures for the next
several days will be comfortable. Remember, it wasn't too long ago that our
normal high was 91 and the normal low 71. Now it's 81 and 58 as the season
slowly changes.

OUR NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN: We have taken out the mention of any rain
on Thursday so our next rain will be a few isolated showers on Friday and
even that is not certain. A cold front will be approaching Alabama on
Saturday. This should set off some widely scattered showers and possibly a
thunderstorm. It does not look like an all day rain by any means.
It was pleasant across the state again this morning. A few of the lows
included: 57 in Pinson; 58 in Talladega; 59 in Huntsville, Cullman,
Russellville and Fayette.

MORE ABOUT MISS JEANNE: Alabama escaped some heavy rain yesterday
as Jeanne moved northward through Georgia. It seemed that the
Alabama-Georgia border was a brick wall not letting any rain into our area.
This afternoon Jeanne was over SW Virginia and still moving NE and still
causing lots of problems. Numerous flash flood warnings are posted all the
way northward into parts of New York State. In the last 24 hours, nearly 5
inches of rain fell in Atlanta bringing their total for September to 13.65
inches. She may still produce as much as 4 to 8 inches of rain in the next
24 hours in the Northeast.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Can't find a dry spot hardly anywhere in the
Eastern USA. As much as 4 inches of additional rain fell in North Carolina
overnight...would you believe that Vero Beach on the Atlantic Coast of
Florida has received 17 inches of rain in the last 4 weeks? Melbourne has
received 16 inches, but one of the biggest totals is a whopping 26.17 inches
at West Palm Beach.a very chilly air mass is pushing down through the
Midwest...there was a hard freeze in Northern Minnesota this morning with
temperatures as low as 19 in Embarrass...in Alaska, the coldest was 9 at
Arctic Village.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure hope you saw the harvest moon as
it came up last night. It was partially hidden by clouds, but still a
beautiful sight. The moon will only be about 30 minutes later rising tonight
and little Miss Molly and I will try to walk about that time...a most
pleasant walk this morning, but the combination of a community cat and
several dogs really gave her a lot of excitement. She wants to be friendly
with every human and dog in the world, but she knows by instinct that she is
supposed to chase cats and rabbits. That means I have to chase them too,
because she pulls me along at a rapid clip. Don't you wish your life was as
exciting? Life goes on and I look forward to the bonus 15 years with Molly.

...Alabama Stays Dry For Now...

As tropical depression Jeanne moves northeast, away from Alabama, we will
remain under a dry northerly flow today. This means ample sunshine and
temperatures near normal levels for late September in Alabama.

The forecast gets a little more complicated later in the week, as a rather
moist easterly flow sets up on Thursday and Friday, and a surface trough
becomes established over the state. For now, we will only mention isolated
showers on those two days with only shallow moisture expected across north
and central Alabama.

WEEKEND PEEK: The latest model data suggests a cold front will zip through
here on Saturday, but with only limited moisture and upper dynamics well to
the north of us, we will just mention the chance of a few passing light rain
showers. No wash-out or all day rain at all. Then, drier air returns to the
state on Sunday.

TROPICS: The good news on the tropical front is that the weather is finally
beginning to calm down. We still have tropical storm Lisa over the central
Atlantic, moving northward, and is no threat to land. Elsewhere, everything
looks quiet and our friends in Florida will now have a good chance to clean
up from the five named storms which have hit the state in the last two
months (tropical storm Bonnie, and hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and
Jeanne).

HANGING OUT THE WASH: Thanks to hurricane Ivan, Birmingham now as a two and
a half inch (2.52") rainfall surplus for the year. If the tropical season
ended today, this would be the 5th most active since good records started in
1851. The four years ahead of this one are 1950, 1893, 1995, and 1926. The
hurricane won't end until the last day of November.

TRULY, A HURRICANE HANGOVER: If anyone has ever had a hurricane hangover,
it has to be the people of Florida and a good chunk of Alabama. But we have
some good news. As soon as we can push Jeanne off the mid-Atlantic coast, we
see no other disturbances on the horizon that are tropical in nature.
Tropical storm Lisa is way out in the Atlantic with no threat to land.

This afternoon Jeanne was downgraded to a tropical depression as she moved
northward through South and Central Georgia. Her biggest remaining threat is
flooding rains and some spin-off tornadoes. The main tornado threat for the
rest of today and tonight will be over East Georgia, South Carolina and
parts of North Carolina. The depression will continue moving NE, curving
across Northwestern South Carolina tonight and across North Carolina on
Tuesday. By Thursday, it will be way out in the Atlantic. Cheers of good
riddance are truly in order.

Alabama was getting minimal effect from Jeanne-some rain over near the
Georgia border and some brisk northerly winds. In the world of post Jeanne,
we should have some great weather Tuesday and Wednesday, but there may be a
slight risk of some showers on Thursday and Friday as a minor disturbance
moves across the state from the SE. Our confidence is low for that, however.

MORE HURRICANE NOTES: Florida is the first state to suffer through four
hurricanes in a single year in 118 years. Texas had that distinction in
1886. As Bill Murray pointed out in his weekend coverage, Polk County in
Central Florida had the distinction of having the eye of Hurricanes Charlie,
Frances and Jeanne move through. It is believed to be a first in the USA. A
few rainfall totals in the last 24 to 36 hours:

4.12 inches in Jacksonville
6.30 at Belle, Fla.
6.96 at Ocala
5.60 at Homerville, Ga.

ANOTHER SIGN OF THE SEASON: Up in Northern Alaska today it was 14 degrees
at Bettles with a wind chill of 4 above and one-half foot of fresh snow on
the ground...down here where 48 states touch each other, the low this
morning was 28 in Gunnison, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I have learned that when
we take a late night walk, there are more criminals (varmints) to watch for.
Last night on an 11 pm walk, the minute we stepped out the back door, a
spider web glistened in my flashlight beam. He was big and pot-gutted. He
had strung part of his web from the eave of the house across to the corner
of the patio, which meant he was trying to trap me. Howsomever, I have
become such a marksman with my little blue pooper-scoop, that he had no
chance. I hit him up the side of the head and we had his funeral on the
spot. I am now a whole lot more accurate a marksman than Matt Dillion or
Wyatt Earp. Molly got very excited about all this commotion. I suppose it
seemed like a near riot to the little girl. We sure did enjoy our morning
walk with a nice north breeze from Jeanne and we saw some of our crow
friends. We lead an exciting life!

...Jeanne Headed For Georgia...

GOOD MORNING! Did you see the gorgeous patch of cirrus unicus clouds in the
western sky just before sunset Sunday evening? They are the familiar mare's
tales that we learned about as children. They are called mare's tales
because that is what they look like. They were "hooked" to the northeast,
indicating they were being borne on southwesterly winds. The beautiful
display was the advance scout of Jeanne. The clouds were the outflow, or
exhaust from the hurricane, blowing in a clockwise fashion outward from the
storm. Seeing the clouds sent me on a historic journey back to 1900. More
in Weather Talk.

JEANNE: Florida is the first state to endure four hurricanes in a single
year since Texas had to do it in 1886. Jeanne will probably have weakened
to a tropical depression by the time that you read this with your morning
coffee. Jeanne will be moving northward through Georgia today, turning to a
northeasterly course. We had expected Jeanne to race offshore and head
into the far North Atlantic. There are some signs that the remnants could
turn southeast. Could we have "Daughter of Jeanne" like "Son of Ivan?"

OUR WEATHER: Jeanne will spread clouds over eastern sections of the state
today. Partly sunny conditions should prevail further to the west in the
Birmingham/Montgomery corridor, but skies could become cloudy for a time,
and there is a slight chance of a shower in this area. Widely scattered
showers should mainly occur over those eastern counties, however. It will
be breezy over parts of the area, with winds averaging 10 mph over western
sections, 10-15 mph over middle sections and 10-20 and gusty over eastern
sections. As Jeanne moves to the northeast, those winds will relax and any
showers will quickly diminish. Tuesday and Wednesday should feature sunny
and cooler conditions, but not much cooler. The GFS model is still hanging
on to the idea that an inverted trough will swing our way Thursday, bringing
a chance of showers and perhaps thunderstorms. While they look most likely
over southern sections, we will keep a slight chance in our forecast.

JEANNE SLOWLY WEAKENS...WILL REMAIN A TROPICAL STORM OVERNIGHT

4 PM CDT FAST FACTS ABOUT HURRICANE JEANNE
LOCATION: LAT 28.8N LONG 82.6W
Just west of Inverness FL or 65 miles NNW of Tampa
MOVEMENT: NW 12 mph
MAX WINDS: 65 mph
CENTRAL PRESSURE: 973 mb (28.73 inches)
Next advisory: 7 p.m. CDT

GOOD AFTERNOON: Boy, you have to feel for the poor people of Central
Florida. First there was Hurricane Charley back on that unlucky Friday the
Thirteenth in August. The category four hurricane ripped through the
Charlotte Harbor area then tore into Central sections of the state like a
buzz saw. Inland damage was catastrophic also in many areas.

Then came category two hurricane Frances on September 5th. Frances moved
inland near Stuart, Florida and ripped a northwestward course across the
Central sections of the state, which was quickly becoming the nation's
hurricane crossroads. Before most people could even start making repairs to
their damaged homes and businesses after Charley, Hurricane Frances was
already on them. They put out buckets under their roof leaks and hoped for
the best as Frances crossed Charley's path near Sebring.

Then came the Ivan scare, but Central Florida dodged that bullet. Relief
was short-lived, however, as Hurricane Jeanne appeared on the horizon. This
morning, Jeanne made landfall within a few miles of where Frances landed
three weeks before. The paths of Jeanne and Frances are almost identical
across Florida.

NHC Director Max Mayfield says he has never heard of two hurricanes
following such eerily similar tracks. Polk County has been in the
crosshairs for all three storms, with the eyes of Charley, Frances and Ivan
passing through the county this year.

JEANNE'S IMPACT IN ALABAMA: Jeanne is passing north and northeast of the
Tampa Bay area this afternoon as it makes the much anticipated turn to the
northwest and north. Jeanne will hug the west coast of Florida as it
curves. By Monday afternoon, it will be somewhere over southern Georgia,
likely east of Albany. This brings the storm to about 75 miles east of
Eufaula at its closest point of approach.

Jeanne's impacts in Alabama will not be significant. Clouds will overspread
eastern sections of the state, starting today over the Wiregrass and pushing
northward tonight and Monday. Showers and storms will be possible in the
Dothan area, but north of that, only widely scattered showers are expected.
Winds may reach tropical storm force over Southeast Alabama tonight and an
Inland Tropical Storm Wind Warning is in effect there.

North to about Auburn, winds have increased to 10-20 mph and will continue
into Monday and Lake Wind Advisories are in effect.

North to Talladega and Anniston and over the rest of Central Alabama, winds
will increase to 10-15 mph on Monday, so you will notice the breeze, but
there will be no problems. Our area should remain dry, except for widely
scattered showers over the counties next to the Georgia border.

REST OF OUR WEEK: Dry and cooler air will filter into Alabama in the wake
of Jeanne's passage to the east of the state. Sunny conditions should
prevail in the Tuesday through Thursday time frame. The GFS model shows an
increase in moisture across the area by Thursday and into the weekend as a
southeasterly flow sets up and an inverted trough moves across the area. It
also hints at the possibility of showers across our area. We will have to
wait and see.

                            ...Jeanne Inland...

GOOD MORNING!  Hurricane Jeanne moved inland on the East Coast of Florida early this morning as a Category 3 hurricane.  Jeanne is expected to move northwest and then north across the Florida Peninsula today, weakening into a tropical depression and passing into southern Georgia early on Monday morning.  By Tuesday afternoon, Jeanne will be accelerating northeastward and be over the Chesapeake Bay area.
ALABAMA EFFECTS:  The predicted track of Hurricane Jeanne keeps the weakening storm at least 100 miles east of the Alabama/Georgia border.  Since Alabama will be on the western side of the storm’s circulation, our effects should be minimal.   Winds will increase over southeastern sections of the state on Sunday, reaching 25-35 mph with higher gusts.  Further north, over East Central Alabama, winds will average 10-20 mph as far north as Auburn.  Across the rest of Central Alabama, in the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Talladega and Anniston areas, winds will run 10-15 mph Sunday through Monday.  So it will be a little breezy, but no significant winds are expected north of the Dothan area.  An Inland Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Tallahassee area and inland counties of the Florida Peninsula and southern Georgia.  The Dothan area has about a 20% chance of showers and storms Sunday, with light showers spreading northward along the Alabama/Georgia border counties Sunday night and Monday.  Here in middle Alabama, we should remain dry.

HEADING INTO THE NEW WEEK:  A washed up stationary front lies over Northwest Alabama this morning.  It should fade away on Monday.  Jeanne will be well to our northeast by Tuesday.  A cold front will approach from the north in Jeanne’s wake, spreading cool, dry, fall-like air across the state for midweek.  Tuesday should be sunny, Wednesday partly cloudy. Now,  there is a potential fly in the ointment as an upside down  trough of low pressure approaches us from the southeast around the periphery of the subtropical high.  This system could spread some showers into the state on Thursday.   We will have to wait and see.
