...Alabama Stays Dry For Now...
As tropical depression Jeanne moves northeast, away from Alabama, we will
remain under a dry northerly flow today. This means ample sunshine and
temperatures near normal levels for late September in Alabama.
The forecast gets a little more complicated later in the week, as a rather
moist easterly flow sets up on Thursday and Friday, and a surface trough
becomes established over the state. For now, we will only mention isolated
showers on those two days with only shallow moisture expected across north
and central Alabama.
WEEKEND PEEK: The latest model data suggests a cold front will zip through
here on Saturday, but with only limited moisture and upper dynamics well to
the north of us, we will just mention the chance of a few passing light rain
showers. No wash-out or all day rain at all. Then, drier air returns to the
state on Sunday.
TROPICS: The good news on the tropical front is that the weather is finally
beginning to calm down. We still have tropical storm Lisa over the central
Atlantic, moving northward, and is no threat to land. Elsewhere, everything
looks quiet and our friends in Florida will now have a good chance to clean
up from the five named storms which have hit the state in the last two
months (tropical storm Bonnie, and hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and
Jeanne).
HANGING OUT THE WASH: Thanks to hurricane Ivan, Birmingham now as a two and
a half inch (2.52") rainfall surplus for the year. If the tropical season
ended today, this would be the 5th most active since good records started in
1851. The four years ahead of this one are 1950, 1893, 1995, and 1926. The
hurricane won't end until the last day of November.
