...Jeanne Headed For Georgia...

GOOD MORNING! Did you see the gorgeous patch of cirrus unicus clouds in the
western sky just before sunset Sunday evening? They are the familiar mare's
tales that we learned about as children. They are called mare's tales
because that is what they look like. They were "hooked" to the northeast,
indicating they were being borne on southwesterly winds. The beautiful
display was the advance scout of Jeanne. The clouds were the outflow, or
exhaust from the hurricane, blowing in a clockwise fashion outward from the
storm. Seeing the clouds sent me on a historic journey back to 1900. More
in Weather Talk.

JEANNE: Florida is the first state to endure four hurricanes in a single
year since Texas had to do it in 1886. Jeanne will probably have weakened
to a tropical depression by the time that you read this with your morning
coffee. Jeanne will be moving northward through Georgia today, turning to a
northeasterly course. We had expected Jeanne to race offshore and head
into the far North Atlantic. There are some signs that the remnants could
turn southeast. Could we have "Daughter of Jeanne" like "Son of Ivan?"

OUR WEATHER: Jeanne will spread clouds over eastern sections of the state
today. Partly sunny conditions should prevail further to the west in the
Birmingham/Montgomery corridor, but skies could become cloudy for a time,
and there is a slight chance of a shower in this area. Widely scattered
showers should mainly occur over those eastern counties, however. It will
be breezy over parts of the area, with winds averaging 10 mph over western
sections, 10-15 mph over middle sections and 10-20 and gusty over eastern
sections. As Jeanne moves to the northeast, those winds will relax and any
showers will quickly diminish. Tuesday and Wednesday should feature sunny
and cooler conditions, but not much cooler. The GFS model is still hanging
on to the idea that an inverted trough will swing our way Thursday, bringing
a chance of showers and perhaps thunderstorms. While they look most likely
over southern sections, we will keep a slight chance in our forecast.
