===================================================================

...Happy New Year...

GOOD MORNING! It is a foggy start to 2006 as dense fog parts of the area,
especially over to the south. The year will also get off to a stormy start
tonight with the very real possibility of severe weather, especially during
the pre-dawn hours on Monday.

TODAY: Southeasterly winds returned overnight. They will continue to
increase during the day, and become quite breezy tonight as low pressure
approaches to our northwest. Those southeasterly winds will begin to
transport in moisture and when a strong low level jet gets going this
afternoon and tonight, moisture levels will really rise. Dewpoints will be
in the middle 50s by this afternoon as a warm front surges northward. A few
showers may pop up along the warm front, but it looks like the atmosphere
may be capped enough to prevent major development. The real action should
get going tonight.

TONIGHT: A moist, unstable airmass will be in place tonight across the
area. As the pre-frontal trough begins to affect the area, thunderstorms
will fire. Indications are that most of the activity will take place after
midnight and east of I-65. As thunderstorms develop, some of them will
become severe thanks to sufficient deep layer shear that will allow the
storms to organize. Low level shear will be maximized in areas east of I-65
tonight, and here is where the best chance for tornadoes to occur. The
timing of all the parameters coming together is critical as to what kind of
severe weather will occur.

MONDAY: Showers and storms will exit into Georgia during the day and some
clearing will occur. As mid level temperatures drop with the trough and
sunshine allows surface temperatures to rise to near 70, instability will
peak again about noon. More thunderstorms will form ahead of the cold
front. By then, most of the low level shear will be gone and the threat
will transition back to large hail.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will feature partly cloudy and mild conditions.
Another disturbance will sweep by Wednesday, pushing a mainly dry front
through the area. But rain chances will be slim. Then it looks like we
will be heading into a major cooldown. Thursday looks to be a partly cloudy
day.

Cold air will begin pouring into the area on Friday. Highs on Friday may
only be in the 30s with even a few snow flurries. High pressure will build
in for the weekend, but a few clouds could hang out for a good bit of
Saturday.

GOOD AFTERNOON: It looks like 2006 will get off to a warm and stormy
start with a chance for severe weather Sunday night and Monday.

ROCKIN’ NEW YEARS EVE: How about that Dick Clark guy? Wow. You will see
him again tonight on ABC3340. As you ring in the New Year overnight, you
should have good weather. Skies will be clear and it will be cool, with
overnight lows fallings into the 40s.

NEW YEARS DAY: Skies will rapidly become cloudy tomorrow as southeasterly
winds begin bringing in Gulf moisture. A warm front will move across the
state Sunday evening. There could be severe storms, including tornadoes
over North Alabama Sunday night along this warm front. It will become
increasingly breezy across the area, especially during the evening hours.
More showers and storms will form after midnight ahead of the cold front,
and some of these could become severe, with the primary threat being large
hail

MONDAY: Showers and storms will be progressing eastward across the state
during the morning hours, likely exiting East Alabama by early afternoon.
Some of these storms will be severe, with the threat for damaging winds and
even possible tornadoes increasing the further east that you go. The SPC
has extreme East Alabama included in a Moderate Risk outlook for severe
weather Monday.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will be a pretty nice day, but moisture will be
already returning by evening. A front will arrive on Wednesday, bringing a
chance for a few showers, or maybe a storm, but chances do not look to be
very high. Temperatures will return to normal levels for this time of the
year for the end of the week. There will be a slight chance of showers on
Friday as another mostly dry front moves through.

SNOW BOWL: University of Alabama Head Football Coach “Bear” Bryant said
later that the only thing that could have meesed up his team’s chances in
the 1963 Sugar Bowl against Ole Miss in New Orleans would have been if it
were to snow. Well, much to his chagrin, it did snow the night before the
big game in the Crescent City, an amazing 4 ½ inches. Alabama would win the
game by a 12-7 margin. The “New Year’s Eve Snow” in the Deep South dumped
an incredible 15 inches of snow at Meridian, and over 10 inches at Bay. St.
Louis. . Very cold temperatures followed the snowstorm and kept the region
immobilized for days.

FAST FORWARD: To this years’ New Years Day bowls, that won’t be played
on New Years Day. Has that happened before? Auburn takes on Wisconsin
Monday at noon in Orlando’s Capital One Bowl on ABC3340. There is a chance
of showers during the game with temperatures in the upper 70s. Alabama
makes its first trip to the Cotton Bowl since 1982 with a 10:00 a.m. CT
matchup against Texas Tech. It should be sunny with gametime temperatures
warming into the lower 70s.

LATEST TROPICAL STORM? Forming at 12:00 GMT on December 30th, you would
have to imagine that Zeta could be the latest tropical storm ever to form in
the Atlantic.. It just might be. Back in 1954, Alice formed at 12:00 GMT
on December 30th, becoming the latest Atlantic tropical storm ever. So Alice
and Zeta are tentatively tied as the latest storms. We will have to wait on
an official ruling from the Commissioner’s Office. Alice was a tropical
storm until January 6, 1955, making it also the earliest Atlantic tropical
storm ever. It is interesting to note that U.S. Weather Bureau forecasters
had already retired their 1954 list of names. Back then, they used the same
list over and over. The December Alice was officially 1955’s first named
storm.

There had already been an Alice in June 1954. December Alice would go on to
become a hurricane, moving through the Leeward Islands on January 2, 1955.

...Ringing In The New Year...

GOOD MORNING: Last night's cold front brought a brief round of showers and
some thunder to the area. Drier air will flow into Alabama today, but winds
will flip back around later today and moisture levels will be back on the
rise. The big question is whether severe weather will occur late tomorrow
night and Monday morning.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Skies should clear quickly this morning's fast moving
system. The airmass behind the front is not materially different from the
airmass it is replacing, so temperatures will be back in the 60s in most
locations today.

CHANGES AHEAD: Northwesterly winds this morning will go calm tonight as
high pressure holds away over Alabama, temporarily. By tomorrow, those
winds will have already shifted back to the southeast and moisture will
begin to return. A warm front will be moving over Alabama during the day on
Sunday, and a few showers will accompany this front as it moves into Central
Alabama during the late afternoon. Behind the front, winds will become
breezy from the south and southeast, pumping in copious amounts of moisture.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: It appears that instability and wind shear will be
present in sufficient quantities to produce severe weather Monday across
Central Alabama. Timing and extent are uncertain at this time, so all
Alabamians should pay close attention to forecasts throughout the holiday
weekend.

TROPICAL STORM ZETA: The 27th named tropical cyclone of the 2005 North
Atlantic Hurricane Season formed this morning in the far eastern Atlantic.
The system won't be of any consequence, just another number in a
mind-boggling season.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Fog caused a seventy car pileup on I-10 between New
Orleans and Slidell LA. One person was killed and thirty were injured.

ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE: Can you believe that we have still another tropical
storm way out in the Atlantic? It is named Zeta off the Greek alphabet. Have
no idea if it is a boy or girl, but that doesn't matter. It just adds to the
unbelievable tropical storm season that we have just gone through. No chance
at all that it will bother the USA.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of change, but still no unusually cold
weather well into next week at least. We do have a possible severe weather
threat late in the weekend. See our day-by-day forecast for details. We
expect the strongest thunderstorms to come at some point Sunday night and
into Monday. A few of those may be severe. Naturally we will watch and wait.

Back to the beginning, we do expect some showers to move across the area
later tonight. They should not be heavy and will get away quickly by
Saturday morning followed by clearing. Most of New Year's Day will probably
be dry with those showers and storms not arriving until Sunday night and
going into Monday. Daytime temperatures should be 60 or better for at least
the next 4 or 5 days. Highs may approach 70 Sunday and Monday in some areas.
Again this morning it was below freezing in the valleys of NE Alabama and
there was actually one report of freezing fog.

A TALE OF TWO TOWNS: Absolutely amazing at the rainfall shortage in North
and East Texas, Oklahoma, NW Louisiana and West Arkansas. How is this for a
contrast? In DeQueen, Arkansas, the rainfall deficiency for 2005 is almost
27 inches. Down on the Gulf Coast, that contrasts sharply with Pensacola
where 87.33 inches has fallen this year-an excess of over 23 inches. There
is quite a contrast in Alabama, too. Huntsville has received only 40 inches,
a shortage of 17 inches while Mobile has received almost 74 inches!

FOOTBALL BOWL WEATHER: Down in Orlando, where Auburn plays Wisconsin
Monday, the forecast is now for a chance of showers and a high of 78.
Earlier they had forecast no rain. In Dallas for the Cotton Bowl game
between Alabama and Texas Tech, it should be mostly sunny Monday with a low
of 45 and a high of 70.

FRIVOLOUS FRIDAY: USA lows this morning, zero at Gunnison, Colorado and 19
below at Gailbraith Lake, Alaska...getting a bit cold up in extreme Northern
Canada with 42 below at Pelly Bay, but that shows no sign of heading toward
Alabama any time soon.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I took Little Miss Molly out for a late night
walk close to midnight. She did not ask to go, but she had been curled up on
my National Geographic blanket on the couch for several hours. Since I had
not played with her, she uses the time to take extra naps. When we came back
indoors, I still did not have time to play, so she took things into her own
paws. She went on a running tear that sounded like NASCAR going all over the
house, going in circles, switching directions and bouncing off the couch and
soft chair. The energy had built up in her so much it just had to explode. I
love to see those displays. I simply die laughing, which makes her look at
me with a puzzled look on her face. Life goes on.

...A Mild Friday...

GOOD MORNING: Greetings from Nashville! It is great when you can do the
weather forecast while sitting in a Barnes and Noble bookstore, drinking a
Starbucks and waiting to eat at Tony Roma's. All thanks to the wireless
internet.

MILD WEATHER AHEAD: Temperatures yesterday were dependent on cloud cover.
In places like Huntsville, where it was cloudy most of the day, temperatures
remained in the lower 40s. At Birmingham, where skies cleared around
lunchtime, lower 50s were measured. In Tuscaloosa and Montgomery, which
stayed sunny all day, 60 degree readings were attained. The mercury should
rebound into the 60s today in nearly all locations with a good deal of
sunshine and an increasing southerly flow.

SHOWERS TONIGHT: Those southerly winds are a harbinger of change. This
morning's weather map is a familiar one. At the surface, low pressure is
over Iowa with a warm front moving northeast out of Texas and Louisiana.
Moisture will be increasing through the day, although the airmass will not
be very juicy, with dewpoints in the middle 40s by tonight. An area of
showers and storms will develop ahead of a cold front that will sweep across
the area overnight tonight. The activity should be weakening as it moves
into Alabama. The rain should be completely gone by dawn mid-morning, with
fairly rapid clearing during the day.

CELEBRATION WEATHER: You should ring in the New Year later tonight under
clear, calm and cool conditions. Temperatures will be dropping to near 40
Saturday night. As you enjoy your black eyed peas on Sunday, those
southerly winds will be increasing again and temperatures will warm into the
60s even as dewpoints begin to rise.

SEVERE WEATHER SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY? Unstable air will begin to overspread
Alabama Sunday night with low pressure to our north over Missouri.
Thunderstorms should enter western sections during the overnight hours,
continuing through the morning hours. Despite the unfavorable time of day,
it appears there will be enough instability present for strong storms to
occur. You will want to pay attention to forecasts throughout the weekend
concerning this event.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It has historically been a long nagging problem to
determine when clouds will completely move out of the area after a cold
front passes. Today was a case in point. While much of the state enjoyed Old
Sol, clouds were stubborn over the extreme north and NE counties. Those
should gradually move away tonight.

We will not go into a great deal of detail here, but please check our
day-by-day forecast and you will see some mild temperatures all the way into
next week. Some light showers will start late Friday night and end Saturday
morning.

SEVERE WEATHER RISK: It may happen again late Sunday night and through
Monday morning. Being that far away, it is something we will put on the back
burner and watch closely. For New Year's Day, it should be a dry, mild day
with highs in the mid 60s. Those showers and storms should not arrive until
late Sunday night and Monday morning. Yesterday's severe weather was limited
mostly to areas east of Birmingham and hail was the main player. There were
a number of large hail reports in EastCentral and SE Alabama. Probably the
most significant report came from the small community of New Site on County
Road 22 NE of Alexander City in Tallapoosa County. The hail was reported to
be 5 to 6 inches deep. There were other reports of automobile windshields
being broken. Over in West Georgia, 5 miles north of Americus, hailstones
4-1/4 inches in diameter were reported. That is softball size!

FOOTBALL BOWL WEATHER: The preliminary forecast is for mostly dry weather
and a peak of 75 degrees for the Auburn-Wisconsin game in Orlando Monday. In
Dallas, where Alabama will play Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl, mostly sunny
weather with a high near 70.

JUST FOR FUN: Let's get a bit unserious and roam around the world and see
what is interesting...we just cannot find any bitter cold in Alaska and NW
Canada...we often watch the town of Mayo in the Yukon Territory, where it
can easily get 50 below zero this time of year. This morning they were 19
above zero...over on the other side of the North Pole at Ojmjakon, Siberia
it was 64 below at midnight their time. Their high for the next couple of
days will be 56 below...Nyang Station in West Australia was reporting 109
degrees at 6 pm...amazingly no subzero temperatures in the lower 48 this
morning. The coldest was plus 3 near Gunnison, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanks to Bill Murray for covering for me
yesterday...very little time to play with Little Miss Molly and she knows
it. She has been following me like a shadow. Every time I go from my office
to the kitchen, desperately looking for a cup of coffee, she grabs three of
her favorite toys, piles them together, wags her tail-a clear invitation to
play. I promised her this morning I would make good...we had a nice early
morning walk. Never even thought of this happening, but an airborne bird
overhead decided to do its business and we heard a little splat about five
feet ahead of us. What if that had hit me on the head? I would have had to
use a whole bottle of shampoo. Or Miss Molly. I would have had to throw her
in the washing machine. Life goes on.

...Fast Moving Pattern...

GOOD MORNING: Yesterday's severe weather had a very Plains feel to it.
With a good bit of dry air in the mid levels of the atmosphere, the sky
looked like it could have been in Kansas or Oklahoma in May. The scattered
thunderstorms that developed were very visible. Very unusual for Alabama.

PROGRESSIVE PATTERN: We continue to be in a very progressive pattern, with
the parade of troughs and ridges around the globe in a fast moving mode.
This has really shortened our time in between storm systems.

TODAY: Skies should become mostly sunny today, but temperatures will
struggle to make it very far into the 50s with a decent cold advection
pattern in place in the form of northwesterly winds. Expect a clear, calm
and cool night tonight.

NEW YEARS WEEKEND: The Gulf of Mexico will be open for business with an
increasing south wind and thickening clouds. Low pressure over the upper
Midwest will push a cold front towards Alabama, sending a wave of showers
and storms through the state Friday night into Saturday morning. This
system does not look very strong, and severe weather is not expected. Skies
should clear during the afternoon. The airmass behind the system is of
Pacific origin, so it will not be materially different that ahead of the
front.

Nice weather will be short lived as another system approaches late on
Sunday. The models indicate that this system will be much stronger than the
Saturday system. Sunday will feature breezy, almost windy, conditions and
increasing clouds. Showers and storms will break out late Sunday night into
Monday morning. There are indications that severe weather will be possible
with this system, so you will want to pay attention to future forecast as we
head into the holiday weekend.

SEVERE WEATHER: Well, we sat around and we waited for the storms to form
overnight. We patiently watched our radars, zoomed in on Mississippi and
Louisiana. We expected storms to fire back to our west, but radar screens
stayed quiet. Finally, about 4:30 a.m., a thin line of showers formed over
East Alabama. This narrow band moved eastward, dampening a few areas, but
not doing much more. To the west, the radar continued to be quiet.

We monitored surface observations that showed some impressive dew point
rises over night. Dew point readings jumped some 17 degrees in less than
twelve hours as moisture surged into the area. Temperatures held steady or
rose slightly during the overnight hours.

As cold air aloft moved over the relatively warm and moist air near the
surface, the airmass became unstable and ripe for thunderstorms to develop.
There was not much of a lid on the atmosphere, but still nothing happened.

As the morning wore on, lots of dry air was moving in from the west. Skies
back in Mississippi were completely clear. There began to be some breaks in
the clouds over West Alabama. The airmass was decently unstable, with CAPE
values in the 1000 joules/kilogram range, which is pretty good for December
in Alabama. There was a bout a 60 knot difference in wind speed from the
surface up to about 1,000 feet. This meant that any storms that formed
would be well organized with the potential for rotation. But the radars
stayed clear. We began to believe nothing would happen.

Finally, about 11:30, showers began popping up like measles on the radar.
They quickly grew into storms and within minutes the first severe
thunderstorm warning was issued for Shelby and Jefferson County because of a
severe thunderstorm just south of Hoover. This storm would produce prolific
hail reports all the way to the Georgia border. Additional strong to severe
storms formed in the area bounded by I-65, I-20 and I-85. There was even a
report of baseball size hail near Kellyton in Coosa County.

A tornado watch is in effect until 7 p.m. CST for parts of East Alabama. As
the cold fornt pushes east, the storms will move into Georgia. Tonight will
feature breezy west winds and clearing skies.

LOOKING AHEAD: Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and cooler than today with
highs in the 50s. Friday will be a nice, mild day, with highs in the 60s.
Clouds will be on the increase by then, with showers and storms moving in
after midnight. They will continue through the morning hours on Saturday.
It does not look like they will be strong at this time. Another system will
arrive on Monday, and those storms do look like they have the potential to
be severe.

NO MISS MOLLY TODAY: I know that is a disappointment. It is for me too.
But JB had his hands full with radio today, so I was lucky enough to get to
fill in for him.
