...Fast Moving Pattern...
GOOD MORNING: Yesterday's severe weather had a very Plains feel to it.
With a good bit of dry air in the mid levels of the atmosphere, the sky
looked like it could have been in Kansas or Oklahoma in May. The scattered
thunderstorms that developed were very visible. Very unusual for Alabama.
PROGRESSIVE PATTERN: We continue to be in a very progressive pattern, with
the parade of troughs and ridges around the globe in a fast moving mode.
This has really shortened our time in between storm systems.
TODAY: Skies should become mostly sunny today, but temperatures will
struggle to make it very far into the 50s with a decent cold advection
pattern in place in the form of northwesterly winds. Expect a clear, calm
and cool night tonight.
NEW YEARS WEEKEND: The Gulf of Mexico will be open for business with an
increasing south wind and thickening clouds. Low pressure over the upper
Midwest will push a cold front towards Alabama, sending a wave of showers
and storms through the state Friday night into Saturday morning. This
system does not look very strong, and severe weather is not expected. Skies
should clear during the afternoon. The airmass behind the system is of
Pacific origin, so it will not be materially different that ahead of the
front.
Nice weather will be short lived as another system approaches late on
Sunday. The models indicate that this system will be much stronger than the
Saturday system. Sunday will feature breezy, almost windy, conditions and
increasing clouds. Showers and storms will break out late Sunday night into
Monday morning. There are indications that severe weather will be possible
with this system, so you will want to pay attention to future forecast as we
head into the holiday weekend.
