...A Mild Friday...
GOOD MORNING: Greetings from Nashville! It is great when you can do the
weather forecast while sitting in a Barnes and Noble bookstore, drinking a
Starbucks and waiting to eat at Tony Roma's. All thanks to the wireless
internet.
MILD WEATHER AHEAD: Temperatures yesterday were dependent on cloud cover.
In places like Huntsville, where it was cloudy most of the day, temperatures
remained in the lower 40s. At Birmingham, where skies cleared around
lunchtime, lower 50s were measured. In Tuscaloosa and Montgomery, which
stayed sunny all day, 60 degree readings were attained. The mercury should
rebound into the 60s today in nearly all locations with a good deal of
sunshine and an increasing southerly flow.
SHOWERS TONIGHT: Those southerly winds are a harbinger of change. This
morning's weather map is a familiar one. At the surface, low pressure is
over Iowa with a warm front moving northeast out of Texas and Louisiana.
Moisture will be increasing through the day, although the airmass will not
be very juicy, with dewpoints in the middle 40s by tonight. An area of
showers and storms will develop ahead of a cold front that will sweep across
the area overnight tonight. The activity should be weakening as it moves
into Alabama. The rain should be completely gone by dawn mid-morning, with
fairly rapid clearing during the day.
CELEBRATION WEATHER: You should ring in the New Year later tonight under
clear, calm and cool conditions. Temperatures will be dropping to near 40
Saturday night. As you enjoy your black eyed peas on Sunday, those
southerly winds will be increasing again and temperatures will warm into the
60s even as dewpoints begin to rise.
SEVERE WEATHER SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY? Unstable air will begin to overspread
Alabama Sunday night with low pressure to our north over Missouri.
Thunderstorms should enter western sections during the overnight hours,
continuing through the morning hours. Despite the unfavorable time of day,
it appears there will be enough instability present for strong storms to
occur. You will want to pay attention to forecasts throughout the weekend
concerning this event.
