SEVERE WEATHER: Well, we sat around and we waited for the storms to form
overnight. We patiently watched our radars, zoomed in on Mississippi and
Louisiana. We expected storms to fire back to our west, but radar screens
stayed quiet. Finally, about 4:30 a.m., a thin line of showers formed over
East Alabama. This narrow band moved eastward, dampening a few areas, but
not doing much more. To the west, the radar continued to be quiet.
We monitored surface observations that showed some impressive dew point
rises over night. Dew point readings jumped some 17 degrees in less than
twelve hours as moisture surged into the area. Temperatures held steady or
rose slightly during the overnight hours.
As cold air aloft moved over the relatively warm and moist air near the
surface, the airmass became unstable and ripe for thunderstorms to develop.
There was not much of a lid on the atmosphere, but still nothing happened.
As the morning wore on, lots of dry air was moving in from the west. Skies
back in Mississippi were completely clear. There began to be some breaks in
the clouds over West Alabama. The airmass was decently unstable, with CAPE
values in the 1000 joules/kilogram range, which is pretty good for December
in Alabama. There was a bout a 60 knot difference in wind speed from the
surface up to about 1,000 feet. This meant that any storms that formed
would be well organized with the potential for rotation. But the radars
stayed clear. We began to believe nothing would happen.
Finally, about 11:30, showers began popping up like measles on the radar.
They quickly grew into storms and within minutes the first severe
thunderstorm warning was issued for Shelby and Jefferson County because of a
severe thunderstorm just south of Hoover. This storm would produce prolific
hail reports all the way to the Georgia border. Additional strong to severe
storms formed in the area bounded by I-65, I-20 and I-85. There was even a
report of baseball size hail near Kellyton in Coosa County.
A tornado watch is in effect until 7 p.m. CST for parts of East Alabama. As
the cold fornt pushes east, the storms will move into Georgia. Tonight will
feature breezy west winds and clearing skies.
LOOKING AHEAD: Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and cooler than today with
highs in the 50s. Friday will be a nice, mild day, with highs in the 60s.
Clouds will be on the increase by then, with showers and storms moving in
after midnight. They will continue through the morning hours on Saturday.
It does not look like they will be strong at this time. Another system will
arrive on Monday, and those storms do look like they have the potential to
be severe.
NO MISS MOLLY TODAY: I know that is a disappointment. It is for me too.
But JB had his hands full with radio today, so I was lucky enough to get to
fill in for him.
