...Ringing In The New Year...
GOOD MORNING: Last night's cold front brought a brief round of showers and
some thunder to the area. Drier air will flow into Alabama today, but winds
will flip back around later today and moisture levels will be back on the
rise. The big question is whether severe weather will occur late tomorrow
night and Monday morning.
FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Skies should clear quickly this morning's fast moving
system. The airmass behind the front is not materially different from the
airmass it is replacing, so temperatures will be back in the 60s in most
locations today.
CHANGES AHEAD: Northwesterly winds this morning will go calm tonight as
high pressure holds away over Alabama, temporarily. By tomorrow, those
winds will have already shifted back to the southeast and moisture will
begin to return. A warm front will be moving over Alabama during the day on
Sunday, and a few showers will accompany this front as it moves into Central
Alabama during the late afternoon. Behind the front, winds will become
breezy from the south and southeast, pumping in copious amounts of moisture.
SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: It appears that instability and wind shear will be
present in sufficient quantities to produce severe weather Monday across
Central Alabama. Timing and extent are uncertain at this time, so all
Alabamians should pay close attention to forecasts throughout the holiday
weekend.
TROPICAL STORM ZETA: The 27th named tropical cyclone of the 2005 North
Atlantic Hurricane Season formed this morning in the far eastern Atlantic.
The system won't be of any consequence, just another number in a
mind-boggling season.
ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Fog caused a seventy car pileup on I-10 between New
Orleans and Slidell LA. One person was killed and thirty were injured.
