...Showers In Our Future...

Patches of clouds are drifting across Alabama on this Saturday
afternoon. With a good supply of sunshine despite the clouds,
temperatures are warming into the 60s at most locations. Moisture
levels continue to increase across the state and clouds will begin to
thicken as we head into the evening hours. As moisture levels
increase, it is not out of the question that we could see a shower
during the overnight hours.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Louisiana/Monroe will be at
Tuscaloosa for a 1:30 kickoff this afternoon against the Crimson Tide.
Partly sunny, dry weather with temperatures peaking around 68 during
the game. The UAB Blazers will be in Memphis for a 2:30 kickoff.
Mostly sunny, 68 at kickoff and near 60 by the end of the game.
Auburn is resting up for next week's Iron Bowl battle…

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A passing disturbance will give us a
chance of showers tomorrow. Temperatures will top out in the 60s.
Skies should remain mostly cloudy through the overnight hours with a
continued slight chance of a shower.

HOLIDAY WEEK: Partly cloudy skies will prevail Monday and Tuesday
before the next disturbance in a series approaches Alabama. The
timing is not definite, but it appears that a band of showers and
storms will move through the state ahead of an approaching cold front
either late on Wednesday or early on Thursday. This will be followed
by clearing and cooler conditions.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Louisiana/Monroe will be at
Tuscaloosa for a 1:30 kickoff this afternoon against the Crimson Tide.
Partly sunny, dry weather with temperatures peaking around 68 during
the game. The UAB Blazers will be in Memphis for a 2:30 kickoff.
Mostly sunny, 68 at kickoff and near 60 by the end of the game.
Auburn is resting up for next week's Iron Bowl battle…speaking of which…

IRON BOWL FORECAST: Not much consistency in the model output for
next Saturday, so a very low confidence forecast. For now, it looks
like there could be a chance of rain during the game with very cool
conditions.

TROPICS: Nothing going on in the tropics as we wind down the 2007
North Atlantic Hurricane Season. The season count now stands at
fourteen named storms, including five hurricanes. Two of the
hurricanes grew into major hurricanes (category three or higher.)

LEONIDS: The annual Leonids meteor shower will peak
tonight as the Earth passes through the dust of Comet Temple-Tuttle.
The only problem is that clouds may obscure the show. If you are
lucky enough to have clear skies, the best chances for viewing a few
shooting stars will be after midnight.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Dense fog in the San Joaquin
Valley of California reduced visibilities to less than 150 feet.
Highway Patrol cars had to "pace" groups of vehicles on interstates in
order to prevent accidents from occurring. Repeat occurrences were
reported on the 18th and 19th also.

...Clouds May Hide Sky Show Tonight...

A pleasant Saturday morning is in progress across
Alabama. Temperatures are coldest in the east, where a light freeze
has occurred in many locations. Temperatures are warmer over western
sections, where a warming trend has commenced. That warming trend
will give us highs in the middle and upper 60s today with ample
sunshine. Clouds will be on the increase tonight and there could be a
few showers by morning. With a passing disturbance, showers will be
possible on Sunday, with highs again in the 60s.

HOLIDAY WEEK: Skies will be partly cloudy on Monday and
Tuesday, and highs will edge up to near 70s degrees both days. Clouds
will increase late in the day on Tuesday and there could be a few
showers Tuesday night. Look for a good chance of rain and storms
Wednesday night. Thanksgiving should feature clearing skies and
colder conditions that will hang around into the weekend. There is
still a great deal of uncertainty concerning a potential snowstorm
over the Rockies and out onto the Plains that could have a big impact
on a busy travel week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Louisiana/Monroe will be at
Tuscaloosa for a 1:30 kickoff this afternoon against the Crimson Tide.
Partly sunny, dry weather with
temperatures peaking around 68 during the game. The UAB Blazers will
be in Memphis for a 2:30 kickoff. Mostly sunny, 68 at kickoff and near
60 by the end of the game. Auburn is resting up for next week's Iron
Bowl battle…

A NAME THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY: Sidr. It is Arabic
for jujube tree. The name will go down in history as one of the
deadly tropical cyclones on record. It struck eastern Bangladesh
Thursday night and the death toll is already over one thousand,
despite a mass exodus of over a half million people from low lying
areas. Top winds were 150 mph and the storm surge is estimated to
have been twenty feet. Bangladesh is no stranger to huge death tolls,
having played host to ten of the twenty deadliest tropical cyclones in
world history including a 1991 Category Five storm that killed 140,000
people and Tropical Cyclone Bhola, which killed 500,000 in 1970.

LEONIDS: The Leonids Meteor Shower peaks tonight as the
Earth swings through the dusty debris of the comet Temple-Tuttle. The
best time will be after midnight, during the pre-dawn hours on
Sunday. Try to find a position away from city lights for best
viewing. You don't have to concentrate your viewing on one specific
section of the sky. Scan around to see what you see. The only
problem will be the clouds. Expected cloudiness may spoil the show.

A FAMOUS LEONID SHOW: An incredible Leonid Meteor
Shower display across the central and western United States occurred
on this date in 1966. Forty meteors per second were observed just
before dawn at the Kitt Peak Observatory in southern Arizona. It
appears that every thirty three or thirty four years, the Leonid
Meteor Shower produces an incredible display somewhere in the world.
The cause of the enhanced displays relates to the parent comet that
produces the shower.

A VERY NICE SATURDAY: It will not be quite as cold across Alabama
tonight as it was last night. Here in Central Alabama, we look for an
average low of 36 but over in the valleys of East and Northeast
Alabama, the temperature may drop to near freezing tonight. Generally
the coldest weather so far this season was the story across the state
early today. The temperature dropped to 23 degrees at Ft. Payne
Airport and at Black Creek in northeast Etowah County. There was a
huge frost in Black Creek. It was 24 in Valley Head and Hamilton, 25
in Hanceville, Russellville, and Munford, 26 in Sycamore, and at
Russell Cave National Monument.

Centerville, Sylacauga, Scottsboro, Pinson, and DeSoto State Park all
had 27. It was 31 in Birmingham, 28 in Tuscaloosa.
THE WEEKEND: A milder trend tomorrow. Some scattered clouds but
mostly sunshine. Clouds will thicken Sunday with some scattered
showers. Mild, dry weather is expected early next week. It is
beginning to look like a round of showers and thunderstorms with the
main timeline Wednesday afternoon through Thanksgiving morning. We
will fine tune that later. A cold front will be getting close to
Alabama on Thanksgiving day.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for high school playoff games
tonight. Clear although the temperature will be in the chilly 40s,
excellent for the players. Little or no wind. Louisiana/Monroe will be
at Tuscaloosa for a 1:30 kickoff Saturday. Partly sunny, dry weather
with temperatures peaking around 68 during the game. UAB will be in
Memphis for a 2:30 kickoff. Mostly sunny, 68 at kickoff and near 60 by
the end of the game.

KATRINA AND RITA: An amazing story out of Mississippi and Louisiana
concerning disastrous hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Those two biggies
are now credited with the largest single forestry disaster ever in the
USA. It is estimated that some 320 million trees in Louisiana and
Mississippi alone were killed or severely damaged.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Three inches of snow on the ground atop Mt.
LaConte in the Great Smoky Mountains this morning with a low
temperature of 10. There was one half inch of snow on Grandfather
Mountain , N.C. and winds gusted at high as 77mph in the last 24
hours. It was 12 this morning in Grand Marias, Mich. for the coldest
in the lower 48. The coldest in Alaska was 15 below at Ambler.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly almost set a record
this morning for sleeping late but with 9 people living in her house,
her sleeping hours are really mixed up. She may be involved in a big
ball game at midnight, or an explosion of energy at 9pm. She is a
little jewel because she never gets upset. That is contagious to
everyone that comes in contact with her. She has created thousands of
smiles through these stories and I deeply appreciate the great emails
the last 5 years. Life goes on.....

...Dry Through the Weekend...

FABULOUS FALL WEATHER: What a wonderful weekend ahead… sunny pleasant
days and clear cold nights through Sunday as dry air remains in place.
Afternoon temperatures will peak near 60 today, and in the mid to
upper 60s tomorrow and Sunday. I strongly suggest a drive through the
country to catch the fall foliage colors; seems like they are peaking
right now across much of Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear but chilly for high school playoff games
tonight. Temperatures in the 40s but little or no wind. Louisiana/
Monroe will be at Alabama for a 1:30 kickoff tomorrow at Bryant-Denny
Stadium. Mostly sunny with temperatures peaking 68 to 70 during the
game. UAB is at Memphis for a 2:30 game. Mostly sunny, 65 at kickoff,
50s in the fourth quarter.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: A major storm system is expected to form over the
Southwest U.S. early next week, spreading a variety of inclement
weather across the nation during the busiest travel time of the year.
Initially, snow will develop across the Southern Rockies; Denver could
be dealing with a significant snow event by Tuesday and Wednesday.
Snow should expand into the area generally between Amarillo, Texas and
Chicago during the mid-week period, meaning many of those folks will
have a white Thanksgiving.

In the warm sector of the storm, rain and strong storms will become
widespread across Texas and the Southern Plains on Tuesday, spreading
slowly to the east. At this point, it looks like the rain will arrive
in Alabama on Thanksgiving Day, possibly lasting into Friday. Based on
the strength of the system, we might be dealing with strong storms
here, but on the positive side some beneficial rain will be possible.
It might even be a setup for rain totals of two inches or more. We
sure need it.
Much colder air will roll into Alabama following the rain; at this
point we project dry but cold weather for the Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare
Stadium Saturday night November 24. But, remember, there isn't very
much skill in a specific forecast beyond seven days, so that is
subject to change. We have high confidence in the series of events
next week, but the timing could be off.

DROUGHT UPDATE: The rain total at the Birmingham Airport Wednesday
night was 0.84", which brings the total for the year to 26.07". The
deficiency is 21.06" for 2007. The deficiency at Anniston is 28.30".

TENNESSEE TORNADOS: The NWS in Huntsville confirmed an EF1 tornado
yesterday; it touched down Wednesday night near the community of
Flintville, in Lincoln County., Another tornado touched down in the
community of Kimball, which is west of Chattanooga. Nine people were
injured; all of the injuries were minor.

NOVEMBER SNOW: A snow advisory was in effect last night for the Great
Smoky Mountains of Northeast Tennessee; one to four inches was expected.

====================================================

WIDESPREAD FROST TONIGHT: First we must cheer loudly about the rain
across Alabama in the last 24 hours. Fortunately many sections of the
state receive beneficial rain without any significant wind damage.
Since we are in the middle of a drought that will be remembered and
discussed for years, the rain event was truly uplifting. We all know
that it was not a drought breaker. No one rain event can do that. We
have posted an extensive list of rain amounts on the 33/40 blog, in
fact, the longest list we have ever attempted. There is no way we can
repeat the list here but we do want to mention a few places that got
more than one inch.

1.09 Anniston Airport (they have one of the worst rain deficits in the
state)
1.60 Brillant (Marion County)
1.44 SW Huntsville
1.02 Roebuck (NE part of Birmingham)
1.08 West Trussville
1.14 Moody
1.50 Scottsboro

Low temperatures tonight will average about 30 across Central Alabama
but as low as 23-25 in some of the colder valleys. Because there is
plenty of surface moisture available, there will be a widespread
frost. Temperatures will recover over the weekend with highs Saturday
and Sunday in the upper 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear but chilly for high school playoff games
Friday night. Temperatures in the 40s but little or no wind. Louisiana/
Monroe will be at Alabama for a 1:30 Saturday kickoff. Mostly sunny
with temperatures peaking 68 to 70 during the game. UAB is at Memphis
for a 2:30 game. Mostly sunny, 65 at kickoff, 50s in the fourth quarter.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: There was a tornado west of Chattanooga yesterday
afternoon. Tennessee also hit it lucky in the rain department with
2.80 inches at Nashville, 1.60 at Knoxville, and 1.51 in Chattanooga.
1.46 fell atop Mt. LaConte after the rain, a sharp cold front dropped
their temperature to 22 this morning. Coldest in the lower 48 was zero
at Antero Reservoir in Colorado. Coldest in Alaska was 11 below zero
at Ft. Yukon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am semi-tired today because of late
hours last night but I was working with a big smile on my face because
of all the rain. The only downside was the occasional thunder which
happened often enough to keep Little Miss Molly in hiding or on the
move. She often walks room to room with a worried look if the thunder
is not too close. She was so happy to curl up on our king size bed
after 11pm. Life goes on. Molly and I both are chicken when it comes
to lightning....

...A Big Change To Colder Weather...

A COOL CHANGE: Following a nice round of showers and thunderstorms
last night, look for a major change to cooler weather across Alabama.
A brisk north wind gusting to 25 mph at times will bring Polar air
back to the state, and despite sunshine returning in full force, we
won't make it out of the 50s today. We are forecasting a high of 56
degrees today, which is 21 degrees cooler than yesterday's high of 77,
and 11 degrees cooler than the average high of 65.
Once the sun goes down this evening, temperatures will drop quickly,
and freezing temperatures are expected by daybreak tomorrow. Actual
lows should range from 23 in the coldest valleys to 35 on the ridges.
Tomorrow will be sunny and cool day with a high close to 60.

OUR WEEKEND: Looks like we stay rain-free through the entire weekend.
Saturday will feature a good supply of sunshine with afternoon
temperatures reaching the mid 60s. On Sunday, we will have a mix of
sun and clouds with upper 60s by afternoon. A weak wave will bring
some scattered clouds on Sunday, but at this time it looks like the
low level air will remain very dry, and we have removed the risk of
showers from our forecast.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: A major storm system will impact much of the nation
next week; the latest model runs have trended slower, warmer, and
wetter for Alabama. For now, it looks like the weather will remain dry
Monday through Wednesday as a major upper trough forms over the
Southwest U.S. This system will finally move eastward later in the
week, and bring periods of rain and a few thunderstorms to Alabama by
Thanksgiving Day and Friday (11/23). This has the potential to bring
some beneficial rain to Alabama and the Deep South, but also some
holiday travel issues. Looks like Denver might see a pretty
significant snow storm on the day before Thanksgiving, which could
foul up air traffic at the big airport there.

LAST NIGHT'S STORMS: There was some scattered tree and power line
damage across parts of Northwest Alabama, including Marion County, but
the storms weakened as they approached the Birmingham area. Most
communities received one-quarter to one-half inch of rain; we will run
down the full list later today.

18 YEARS AGO TODAY: An F4 tornado roared through the southern part of
Huntsville; it would destroy or damage 80 businesses, 3 churches, a
dozen apartment buildings, and more than 1,000 cars. It moved on,
climbing over Garth Mountain, demolishing Jones Valley Elementary
School, and destroying 259 homes in the Jones Valley area. All told,
the tornado killed 21 people and injured 463. This was before Doppler
Radar was in use, and a tornado warning was not in effect until 9
minutes after it touched down.

An HIV vaccine is our only hope of ending the AIDS epidemic!
====================================================

STORMS TONIGHT: A strong cold front will be a significant part of our
weather story. The front will arrive in Central Alabama late tonight.
Along and ahead of the front, there will be showers and thunderstorms.
The Storm Prediction Center has mentioned a slight risk of a few of
those storms becoming severe for the Northwest part of the state. That
slight risk area is from about the Gadsden-Birmingham-Tuscaloosa area
northward. That is an arbitrary line of course. It appears that the
main energy from this storm system may be more so across Tennessee,
extreme Northeast Alabama and eastward. A severe thunderstorm watch is
in effect until 8pm for the extreme NW.

It is difficult to determine how much rain we will get in Central
Alabama. We think it will be close to ½ inch with a few spots getting
locally heavier amounts. The cold front should move across late
tonight and by morning, you will note a distinct change to cooler with
temperatures in the upper 40s and brisk NW winds setting in. That will
contrast rather sharply with temperatures well into the 70s this
afternoon. We're calling for a high of only 57 tomorrow. The coldest
temperature will be at daybreak Friday when we expect a good frost and
an average low of 32. However the colder valleys will have lows in the
upper 20s.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: The temperature drop to one above zero in
Yellowstone National Park for the coldest in the lower 48. The low in
Alaska was 15 below zero at Artic Village at Fort Yukon. Another sign
of winter, Barrow, Alaska has accumulated 11 inches of snow, 15 inches
at McGrath and 18 inches at Whittier. That location accumulates a
bunch of snow during the winter. The hottest in the US yesterday was
93 at Fullerton, California. The showers and storms that moved down
into North Alabama dumped almost one inch of rain on Hamilton and
about one third in a number of locations.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had me out early this
morning for a long walk. A lot of autumn leaves already on the ground.
She made me stop at least 50 times while she poked her little nose
under some of the bigger leaves to see what was under there. She is a
nosey little rascal. One of the grandkids played a lot with her last
night and when she finally went to bed, she promptly curled up and
went to sleep and slept till 8:30 this morning. Anne Thomas, one of
our regular readers, finally got to meet Molly last night and they
became instant friends that will go on forever. Molly is just that
type. Life goes on…

FINAL THOUGHTS: Sure enjoyed doing a weather presentation last night
for the Jefferson County Master Gardeners Graduation Exercise at the
Botanical Gardens. Many thanks to Anne Thomas, Harold Deason, and Tony
Glover for the invite and the hospitality. Not to mention a great
meal. That is a fine group of folks and they have a great sense of
humor because my presentations tend to be a bit silly at times. We had
great fun.....

...Storms Tonight; Colder Tomorrow...

COLD FRONT ON THE WAY: A strong cold front will pass through Alabama
late tonight, and a healthy line of showers and storms should pass
through in advance of the boundary. While a few scattered showers and
storms could break out this afternoon, it still looks like the main
round of rain and storms will come from around 8:00 tonight through
5:00 a.m. tomorrow. A few of the storms could be strong to severe, but
they should slowly weaken tonight as the air becomes more stable. Rain
is what we need, and at this point it looks like rain totals of one-
quarter to one-half inch can be expected for most places around here.

AN ICY WIND TOMORROW: Much colder air rolls into Alabama tomorrow in
the wake of the frontal passage. The sky becomes mostly sunny early in
the day, but despite the sun it looks like we won't make it out of the
50s. A north wind gusting to 25 to 30 mph will make the day feel even
cooler. Then, by early Friday morning, many North and Central Alabama
communities will see a light freeze along with widespread frost as the
temperature drops into the low 30s. The normally colder valleys should
dip into the 24 to 29 degree range. Then, during the day Friday, the
weather will remain sunny but cool.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Saturday promises to be yet another beautiful day for
football, but a wave in the upper atmosphere will bring some clouds in
here on Sunday, and we will bring in the chance of a few showers by
Sunday afternoon into the nighttime hours. For now, this system does
not look like a major rain producer (how many times have we heard that
in recent months!).

THANKSGIVING WEEK: All eyes will be on a major weather system expected
to develop by mid-week over the middle of the nation. This deep upper
trough is expected to bring a round of showers and thunderstorms to
Alabama… possibly a severe weather threat, followed by the coldest air
so far this season by Thanksgiving Day. But, remember there isn't much
skill in a specific forecast beyond seven days, so details might
change as we get closer to the holiday.

TUESDAY'S SHOWERS: A band of showers and thunderstorms dropped
southward over the northern half of Alabama yesterday; there was some
scattered wind damage in Lamar County, near Millport. Rain totals
included .43" at Haleyville, .28" at Blountsville, .26" at Carbon
Hill, .15" at McCalla, and .04" at Jasper. We had a few drops at the
ABC 33/40 studio in Riverchase during the evening hours, but not
enough rain to measure.

TIDBITS: St. Thomas, in the Virgin Islands, was soaked with 1.63" of
rain yesterday. Hottest spot in the nation was Fullerton, California
with 93 degrees. Coldest was Chandalar Lake, Alaska with 22 degrees
below zero.

====================================================

ANOTHER EXCELLENT FOOTBALL WEEKEND: Who cares about football? We
would rather have rain. Looks like we have a good chance of both. Some
showers and thunderstorms were working their way into NW Alabama this
afternoon. They will continue pushing toward the SE. We believe they
will decrease in number and not give us a decent soaking tonight. The
situation looks better later Wednesday and Wednesday night. This is
because a strong cold front will be pushing SE reaching Arkansas and
NW Tennessee tomorrow and moving across Alabama Wednesday night. Along
and in advance of this front may be our best chance for rain in
several weeks. Here in Central Alabama, some of those showers and
storms may show up by midday Wednesday, and gradually increase later
in the afternoon with our best chance Wednesday night. One of our
weather models suggests that we could get one inch of rain during all
of this. We have seen that not come to fruition on a number of
occasions. We toned it down a bit and suggest a storm total of about
1/2 inch. The ground is dry as a bone so it will gobble up any rain
that comes. Bottom line: it will hardly make a dent in the drought.

WINDY AND MUCH COOLER: That is the story for Thursday with highs only
in the upper 50s. Friday and Saturday should be mostly sunshine with
lows in the 30s and highs in the 60s. The weekend looks good for high
school and college football games, but we will have a more specific
football forecast in our Thursday editions.

A WEATHER MOMENT: Down slope winds on the east side of the Rockies are
called the Chinook, and the temperature heats by compression as the
winds reach lower altitudes. This morning, gusts were 50-60mph over
Eastern Montana.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Sweet Grass, Montana strong winds with a wind chill
of 22. I love those kinds of place names. I wonder how Swift Current,
Saskatchewan was named that? Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was
14 at Sparta, Wisconsin. Coldest in Alaska was 20 below zero at
Chandalar Lake. Nearly 4% of the lower 48 has a snow cover this
morning. 14 inches fell in the last 24 hours at Sylvania,
Pennsylvania. Up in Northern Canada, temperatures have dropped as low
as 42 below at Eureka as the change in season becomes more assertive.
It was 57 below at Summit, Greenland on the Ice Cap.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has had a busy, busy 24
hours. We nestled her down on the king size bed four times last night
only to see her bail out and scratch at the door wanting to go back
into the living area where the grandkids were sleeping. We were away
all day yesterday due to the death of a very close friend. The
majority owner fell when she came out of the church and landed on the
knee that had surgery and she may have a cracked her wrist. The knee
was not hurt but it gave us a scare. We had been gone so long that we
gave Molly a full-size treat when we got home and a long extended
belly rub. Life goes on......

...Moisture Levels are Increasing...

LOOKING FOR RAIN: With Birmingham's rain deficit up to 21.42", we will
take any rain we can get. There will be a risk of a few isolated
showers this afternoon and tonight with a weak upper air wave passing
through, but rainfall amounts, if any, will be light and spotty. We
will have a much better chance of significant rain tomorrow night as a
cold front passes through Alabama. At this point it looks like the
primary chance of rain will come from about 9:00 tomorrow night
through 6:00 a.m. Thursday. Most communities can expect from one-
quarter to one-half inch of rain; not exactly a drought buster, but it
beats nothing.

The sky will become sunny rather quickly on Thursday, and the weather
turns noticeably cooler with temperatures barely getting out of the
50s. Then we expect a frosty Friday morning with a low down in the mid
to upper 30s. The colder valleys can expect a light freeze by daybreak
Friday. The weather during the day Friday will remain dry and cool.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: While moisture levels will slowly increase over the
weekend, at this moment the chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday
looks relatively small. Look for afternoon highs in the 65 to 70
degree range, just a little above normal for mid-November.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Another disturbance will bring the next chance of
showers and thunderstorms early next week on Monday. Then, a stronger
system is due in here at mid-week with another round of showers and
thunderstorms on Wednesday, which is considered by some to be the
busiest travel day of the year. Interesting to note that mid-week
system has the chance to produce the first significant snow of the
season in a broad area from roughly St. Louis to Indianapolis and
Detroit. Of course, this is still 8 days away, so some changes are
possible. But, the system looks pretty potent, and model output has
been pretty consistent. Thanksgiving Day for now looks dry and colder
for Alabama and much of the Deep South.

TROPICS: The 2007 hurricane season ends on November 30; so far this
year there have been five hurricanes, 8 tropical storm, one sub-
tropical storm, and two tropical depressions. Hurricanes Dean and
Felix reached category five strength, but they did not impact the
United States. Hurricane Humberto also became the fastest developing
storm on record to be so close to land. It strengthened from a 35 mph
tropical depression to an 85 mph hurricane in 14 hours while 15 miles
off the coast of Texas.

HODGEPODGE: Hottest place in the U.S. yesterday was Laredo, Texas with
90 degrees. Arctic Village, Alaska dropped to 17 degrees below zero
yesterday morning; the low at Big Piney, Wyoming was 7 degrees above
zero. Light rain was falling much of the day at Seattle, where the
total was .56" with a high of only 53. Peoria, Illinois measured .68"
from passing showers.

====================================================

DRY AS A BONE: The numbers pretty much tell the story… so far in
November, there has been no measurable rain in Birmingham, and the
total for 2007 is only 25.23"; a deficiency of 21.26". The situation
is even more severe over in Anniston; the deficit for 2007 is a
whopping 28.87". To say we need some rain is a big time understatement.

The good news is that moisture levels are slowly increasing over the
state, and there is some chance a few showers show up by tomorrow
afternoon. But, there will be a better chance of showers and a few
thunderstorms late Wednesday and Wednesday night as a cold front moves
through Alabama. The latest computer model guidance suggests our best
chance of rain will come from about 6:00 p.m. Wednesday through 6:00
a.m. Thursday. Looks like we will have the potential for around one-
half inch of rain; some lucky communities might see a little more.

COLDER AIR RETURNS on Thursday; looks like we might have a hard time
getting out of the 50s on Thursday despite the return of sunshine in
full force. Then, by Friday morning we will drop well down into the
30s with a good chance of frost; the colder valleys and protected
areas can expect a light freeze. Friday will be another sunny and cool
day.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now, it looks like a majority of the weekend will be
rain-free across Alabama, with a high in the 65 to 70 range. Moisture
levels will be increasing, so a few isolated showers are not totally
out of the question, but for now it looks like it will be Monday of
next week before the next decent opportunity for widespread rain
arrives.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Coldest place in the nation this morning was
Arctic Village, Alaska with 17 degrees below zero. Coldest spots in
the "lower 48" were Berlin, New Hampshire and Stanley, Idaho with 10
degrees.

TROPICS: The 2007 hurricane season is down to the last three weeks;
disturbed weather continues across the southwest part of the
Caribbean, but the system is not expected to become any better
organized. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is
down to 66 degrees, so the central Gulf Coast season is just about
wrapped up with that kind of cool water in place.

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came out to Storm Alert Xtreme
Saturday at the BJCC… we had a standing room only crowd, meaning
hundreds of new Skywatchers will be added to our team of trained
severe weather spotters. Brian Peters did his usual great job; also
thanks to Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist-In-Charge of the National
Weather Service in Birmingham, and research Tim Coleman of the
University of Alabama in Huntsville for excellent presentations. Also,
thanks to Brett McBrayer and everyone with the Birmingham Automobile
Dealers Association for their hospitality and partnership; they allow
us the space at the BJCC every year during the Alabama International
Auto Show… we are already looking forward to Storm Alert Xtreme 2008!

...Great Day For A Parade...

Birmingham's 60th Veterans Day celebration ends with the annual parade
commencing at 1:30 p.m. from 8th Avenue and 19th Street North. It
will go south on 19th to Fifth Avenue North, then east on Fifth to
22nd Street before turning south to Second Avenue. It then will turn
west of Second Avenue to 18th Street and continue north to Sixth
Avenue. Other events today include an ROTC and JROTC competition at
the Fairgrounds at 7:30 a.m. There will be a Memorial Service at 9
a.m. at Cathedral Church of the Advent and the World Peace Luncheon at
Boutwell at 11 a.m. The weather will be ideal, with partly cloudy
skies and warm conditions during the parade. Afternoon temperature
readings will be in the lower and middle 70s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Moisture levels will be steadily rising today and
tomorrow thanks to an increasing southerly and then southwesterly flow
ahead of our next system. Temperatures on Tuesday will rise into the
middle 70s after a morning low in the lower 50s. I guess there could
be a shower or storm on Tuesday, but the main activity should come
from the pre-dawn hours Wednesday until a weak cold front arrives
Wednesday night. I use the word "activity" advisedly, since rainfall
amounts will be light, less than a quarter of an inch. Expect
slightly cooler conditions behind the front, followed by another
system that will bring a brief round of showers and perhaps a storm
Friday night.

HOLIDAY SNEAK PREVIEW: After that system passes, a weak ridge of high
pressure will settle over Alabama in to the following week. More
model madness later in the Holiday week. We had expected showery
conditions, but the GFS is now less bullish on that idea. Still
hoping for a stronger system to the start the week after Thanksgiving.

COMET'S TAIL BREAKS AWAY: From SpaceWeather.com: Exploding Comet
17P/Holmes continues to amaze onlookers. On Nov. 8th and 9th part of
the comet's blue tail broke away in view of many backyard telescopes.
Visit http://spaceweather.com to see photos of the "disconnection
event" and speculation about what might have caused it.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: The Great Cyclone of 1970 is known as the
"cyclone that founded a nation." The Category 4 cyclone slammed
ashore near Calcutta India during a terrifying evening of wind, rain
and rapidly rising water. The country of East Pakistan received the
brunt of the incredible 30 foot storm surge. Warnings were broadcast
by radio, but in the impoverished mud flats at the mouth of the River
Ganges, there were few radios. Much of the area is less than 15 feet
in elevation, so the 30 foot surge inundated areas up to 30 miles
inland. At least 300,000 people died, making it the single most deadly
tropical cyclone in world history. East Pakistan would declare its
independence from Pakistan because of the lack of support after the
disaster, leading to a deadly civil war. The new country would become
Bangladesh.

...Perfect Parade Perfection...

A salute to all of our veterans out there on this Veterans Day 2007
from the Weather Department. Thanks for all that you have done for
our country and the world. A nice day weather wise is our little
contribution to the cause. And in the city that is famous for the
oldest and best Veterans Day celebration, tomorrow's parade will
feature nearly perfect conditions. I can remember being let out of
school early as a kid to go to the Veterans Day Parade in downtown
Birmingham, then coming home to play football in the yard, because the
Alabama/Auburn football game was just around the corner. You were
either Johnny Musso or Pat Sullivan (I am dating myself here.)
Usually the weather would be on the cool side, with sunny skies.
Tomorrow will be mild and partly cloudy with highs in the lower 70s.

THE WEEK AHEAD High pressure will remain in control of our weather
through Tuesday. Moisture to our west and passing disturbances in a
west northwesterly flow will give us patchy clouds at times, but we
should remain dry through at least much of Tuesday. A weakening
disturbance should take advantage of the high weakening to give us a
chance of showers by Wednesday. These chances should diminish on
Thursday, but a stronger disturbance will push

HOLIDAY SNEAK PEEK: After next weekend's front passes, we should see
a weak ridge build in over Alabama. This ridge will hold through the
start of the holiday week. A big trough to the west of Alabama will
begin to influence our weather by Wednesday of that week, with
increasing showers for Thanksgiving. That would be something to be
thankful for. There are signs that a strong system will arrive on the
weekend after Thanksgiving. This could give us a good shot of rain
and storms in the Sunday/Monday time frame, followed by a change to
colder. That system could make for travel nightmares for the nation's
midsection.

TROPICS: The 2007 North Atlantic Hurricane Season is winding down
toward a November 30th ending. The tropics are rather inactive this
morning. The only feature is a weak low pressure area over the
southwestern Caribbean. It shows little organization and will move
inland over Central America before any development can occur. Fifteen
named storms have occurred this year (a couple were a little dubious,
including one subtropical storm and one tropical storm that probably
was never more than a depression. So the numbers a re a little above
average, but it is hard to say it is an active season, with very few
large and powerful storms and one U.S. landfall. The GFS is hyping
any tropical systems during the next two weeks.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: A significant high wind event in Colorado on
November 11-12, 1995. Strong downslope winds gusted to 124 mph at the
National Center for Atmospheric Research on the mesa in Boulder CO.
Utility poles and power lines were downed leaving several hundred
homes without power in Boulder, where windows were also blown out of
cars. Other reports of strong wind gusts included: 104 mph atop Squaw
Mountain, west of Denver, 99 mph in Golden Gate Canyon, 85 mph on
Rocky Flats, and 69 mph at Jefferson County Airport.
