===================================================================

An unusually deep upper level trough over the southwestern United
States is poised to bring some beneficial rains to Alabama over the
next sixty hours. Rainfall amounts over North and Central sections of
Alabama will range between one and two inches by Monday night.
Indications are that severe weather will be limited mainly to
southwestern sections of the state tomorrow night through Monday.

THE SCENARIO: Some light rain was over Northwest Alabama at early
afternoon. Showers will continue to increase across the state this
afternoon and tonight. A surface low has developed off the middle
Texas coast. This low will move northeastward as it deepens tonight
and move onto the Louisiana coast tomorrow. It will move north
northeastward along the Mississippi River Sunday night, spreading a
warm sector up into Alabama.

Indications are that the best chance for severe weather will be
limited mainly to southwestern sections of the state occurring Sunday
night into Monday morning. There will be thunderstorms spreading into
West Alabama Sunday night and crossing the state Monday. Instability
will be limited, but there will be a lot of shear, so the situation
will have to be monitored. The rain will end from west to east Monday
afternoon. Clouds should break up early on Tuesday with high pressure
and fairly mild air in store for us through Wednesday. Another
frontal system will approach on Thursday, but it now looks much weaker
than earlier thought.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for UAB/Marshall this afternoon.
Auburn and Alabama will square off for state bragging rights tonight
in Auburn. There could be a few light showers during the game, but
indications are that the heavy stuff will hold off until after
midnight. Temperatures will be cool hanging right around 50 during
the game. There will be a brisk east wind at 6-12 mph that will make
it feel cooler.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Thirty six tornadoes touched down on a
Saturday in Alabama, setting a record for the number of tornadoes in a
single day for the state. It surpassed the previous record for the
state which was set during the April 3, 1974 outbreak, when 27
twisters hit the state.

The first major tornado of the day cut a 39 mile path from near
Kennedy in Lamar County to just south of Carbon Hill in Walker County.
Two people died in a mobile home near Kennedy. An F2 tornado cut a
short path through the town of Haleyville in Winston County just
before 11:30 a.m., injuring 13 people. Just northeast of Birmingham,
an F2 tornado moved along I-59 near Argo as it cut a nearly 14 mile
path into St. Clair County.

The strongest tornado of the day touched down about 1:19 p.m. CST
southeast of Oneonta in Blount County. The tornado produced three
distinct areas of F4 damage. The other two fatalities of the day
occurred near Sand Rock in Cherokee County just after 3 p.m. as an F2
tornado cut an 8 mile path. Again, the fatalities were in a mobile
home. Perhaps the luckiest break of the day came as an F2 formed on
the western side of Pell City about 3:10 p.m. The tornado weakened
as it moved across the downtown area, resulting in mainly light
structural damage. Had the tornado been stronger, the damage and
potential for injury or death would have been far greater.

MEMORABLE IRON BOWL WEATHER: On the morning of December 2, 1967,
low pressure was forming over southeastern Texas. A strong warm front
was lifting northward. At Legion Field on Birmingham's west side, the
Iron Bowl was getting ready to kickoff. Rain began to fall just
before the kickoff on the back of a strong south wind that was gusting
to nearly 30 mph. The temperature was a coolish 52 degrees. The rain
fell harder and harder during the game.

Our own J.B. Elliott remembers manning the Weather Bureau forecast
office that day. He recalled the stormy conditions that afternoon,
with lots of wind and rain, pointing out that what was likely a
gravity wave pushed through after the main rain event, producing winds
gusting to nearly 50 mph. It must have been miserable conditions for
the players and fans that day. Alabama coach Bear Bryant punted
repeatedly on third down when the wind was at the Crimson Tide's back
and on 4th down when the wind was against them.

Alabama QB Kenny Stabler made the one big play of the day, a 47 yard
fourth quarter touchdown run through the mud that won the game 7-3 for
the Tide. More Iron Bowl weather memories in today's Weather Blog
where you can post your favorite Alabama vs. Auburn meteorological
recollection.

...Are You Ready For Some Football?...

Not much is on the line as Alabama travels to Jordan-Hare this
evening for the annual Iron Bowl tilt. Nothing, unless you count
bragging rights for the next 371 days until the two state powers
tangle again on November 29th next year.

FIRST, THE FOOTBALL FORECAST: In honor of Leonard's
Posttoasties…Coach Nick Saban takes his pack of pachyderms to the
Plains of Auburn tonight for a run-in with the Tigers of Auburn. As
always, it will be a knockdown, dragout fight with for the entire 60
minutes. The weatherman is calling for increasing rain chances during
the game. It will be cool, with a risk east wind during the game.
Leonard's Loser…anyone who forgets their rain gear or their team
spirit! The fire breathing dragons of UAB travel to West Virginia to
take on Marshall's Thundering Herd for homecoming. Sporting identical
records, the Blazer will rain on the Herd's parade. That will be the
only rain during the game, which will kick off at 3:30 p.m. CST under
clear skies. Get me out of here Percy!

BENEFICIAL RAINS/SEVERE WEATHER AHEAD: It is another clear, cold
start across the area this morning, but that will change by afternoon.
The classic high clouds will gather, then begin to lower ahead of our
next storm system, which is forming to the southwest of us. As low
pressure forms over the northwestern Gulf today, showers will
overspread Southwest Alabama and spread slowly northeastward. As
Leonard said earlier, rain could affect the Alabama/Auburn game, with
a steady rain possible late in the game. Rain will gradually
overspread the area during the night tonight, heaviest for Central
sections after midnight. As the warm front moves northward, we will
find ourselves in the warm sector of an intensifying low pressure
system tomorrow, with scattered showers and storms possible. Storms
over Southwest Alabama could be severe Sunday afternoon and night. As
the low lifts north northeastward, a cold front will approach Alabama
from the west triggering additional storms. Some of these storms will
have the potential to become severe late Sunday night and Monday
across our area, thanks to high levels of wind shear, even though
instabilities will be rather low. It looks like the best chance may
come during the day on Monday and mainly south of I-59. This is a
developing weather situation, and one that will be watched closely.
Be alert to later forecasts and outlooks and be prepared to monitor
the weather closely Sunday night into Monday. Much drier air will
move in for Tuesday and Wednesday but it will be mild. Another round
of storms is on tap for Thursday.

MEMORABLE IRON BOWL WEATHER: On the morning of December 2, 1967,
low pressure was forming over southeastern Texas. A strong warm front
was lifting northward. At Legion Field on Birmingham's west side, the

OVER TWO INCHES POSSIBLE FROM ENTIRE STORM SYSTEM: This still looks
like the best upcoming rain event that Alabama has seen in many moons,
but we hate to count our chickens before they hatch. Here is the
general situation. An upper level disturbance develops in the west and
moves east. That spins up a low pressure area over the west Gulf of
Mexico. By late Saturday, the low will be near Houston. By daybreak
Monday, the low will be near Memphis. During this transition, it will
have pulled a warm front north from the Gulf of Mexico. The atmosphere
will be loaded with moisture due to our dear friend the Gulf. All of
this will translate into widespread precipitation across the Gulf
States over the next several days. It will be too warm for any threat
of snow. In fact, temperatures will warm to the 60s by Monday and
Tuesday.

When will all of this rain occur? Here in Central Alabama, we think
light rain will start late tomorrow and gradually become widespread
Saturday night. Look for a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
Sunday and a few of those could be severe and rain could be heavy at
times. If we had to pinpoint a 12-hour span, we would say that the
most widespread rain and storms and the heaviest rain will be Sunday
night and Monday morning. During that timeframe, there will still be
the risk of a few thunderstorms becoming severe.

HOW MUCH RAIN? There is a special unit in the National Weather
Service in Washington that specializes in predicting where and how
much precipitation will fall over a 5-day period. Their latest output
hints that over 2 inches and possibly 3 across Central Alabama during
the entire event. If we could even get half that much, we would throw
a party. They also project as much as 3 inches in NW Georgia, which
would be a great blessing to parched Atlanta. We all want water and we
want it badly.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school playoff games tonight, it will
be clear with very little wind. About 40 degrees at kick off, but
lowering to the mid 30s by the fourth quarter. For the Auburn/Alabama
game in Auburn Saturday night, cloudy cool weather with temperatures
in the 40s. There may be a cold rain by game time. If not, it should
start at some point during the game.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: There was 1 inch of snow on the ground in the
Great Smoky Mountains that occurred overnight. The 1 inch was on Mt.
LeConte and Newfound Gap. There is going to be a widespread wet
weather event over the next few days covering a huge area from Texas
to the Carolinas and NE into New England. This includes some snow in
New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle, but mostly rain across the Gulf
States and up through the Mid-Atlantic States. There is even a
potential for the critical water shortage areas around Atlanta and
North Georgia to receive 1 to 3 inches of rain. The lowest temperature
in the lower 48 this morning was at Laramie, Wyoming and Bozeman,
Montana where it was 10 below zero. A bull moose almost stepped on me
before daybreak while camping in a canyon west of Bozeman. We
immediately folded our sleeping bags and took off. Life goes on......

...Rain Returns Over The Weekend...

A BRIGHTER DAY: While temperatures today will remain about 10 degrees
below normal, the day will be a little more comfortable than yesterday
thanks to a good supply of sunshine and lighter wind. We are expecting
a high this afternoon somewhere between 51 and 55 degrees for most
communities. Tonight will be clear and cold again, with a light freeze
likely by daybreak tomorrow.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school playoff games tonight, it will be
chilly but dry. Temperatures will be in the 40s, but not much wind.
Some stadiums could be in the upper 30s by the final whistle. UAB
travels to Huntington, West Virginia for Marshall University's
Homecoming. Expect dry weather with a high near 45 during the game.
For the Alabama/Auburn game in Auburn tomorrow night, temperatures
should be in the 40s with a brisk east wind and a cold rain. Not
exactly chamber of commerce weather.

RAIN RETURNS OVER THE WEEKEND: A complex storm system will get its act
together to the west over the weekend, and will bring a good chance of
beneficial rain to Alabama, but also the chance of severe weather
before it gets out of here. Rain should begin to develop by the mid to
late afternoon hours tomorrow as moist air goes up and over a shallow
layer of colder air near the surface. This rain will become widespread
tomorrow night, and it will be a cold rain with temperatures mostly in
the 40s.

During the day Sunday, a warm front will do its best to push northward
through Alabama, and by Sunday night a good portion of the state will
be in the warm sector of the storm system. As the core of the dynamic
weather system passes through here, we have a significant chance of
severe thunderstorms Sunday night and Monday. For now, it looks like
the greatest chance of severe storms will come from around midnight
Sunday night through the mid-morning hours on Monday. This is when the
atmosphere tends to be rather stable, but in this case strong dynamics
should overcome the weaker instability and set the stage for severe
thunderstorms. Based on the projected wind fields and shear, a few
tornadoes will be possible as well.

All Alabamians will need to pay attention to our forecast of this
storm system over the weekend since some adjustments might have to be
made in the timing of the event. It might not be a bad idea to review
your severe weather safety plan in case things get rough around here
late Sunday night and Monday.

FROM ALASKA: This report from our Skywatcher in Girdwood, Alaska, Todd
Foisy: "We're getting another big rainstorm. It's also very windy. My
weather station recorded its highest wind gust since I put it in early
last winter: 31 mph. I know that doesn't sound like much, but I'm in
dense trees and it takes a lot to get that type of wind. Ridgetop
weather stations in the area gusted as high as 122 mph. We're up to 32
days straight of measurable precipitation." Todd also reports a snow
depth of 5 inches.

SIGNIFICANT RAIN EVENT OVER THE WEEKEND: Everybody did not get a good
rain yesterday and last night, but a number of communities received
beneficial amounts. Just a few of the places that got an inch or more,
or close to an inch, included Decatur, Evergreen, Huntsville, Muscle
Shoals, Troy, Meridianville, Blountsville and Jasper. Three of the
heavier amounts included 2.02 inches at Decatur, 1.76 at Meridianville
(located north of Huntsville) and 1.53 at Huntsville/UAH. The cold
front that helped trigger all of that rain reached the SE corner of
Alabama by midday. Clouds hung tough much of the day behind the front
and there was quite a change in comfort level as compared to
yesterday. For example, it was in the low to mid 70s across Central
Alabama yesterday, but only in the 40s this afternoon with a brisk
north wind.

We are calling for an average low of 33 across Central Alabama
tonight, but only if it clears a few hours before daybreak. Friday
should be dry and cool with mostly sunshine for the advertised busiest
shopping day of the year. Highs will be in the 50s.

OUR NEXT BIG RAIN EVENT: If all the weather ingredients come together
like we think now, we should have one of our biggest and most
beneficial rain events in months late in the weekend and Monday of
next week. A low pressure system will spin up over the NW Gulf of
Mexico and move northward. This will pull a vast amount of moist air
northward from the Gulf. Certain upper air ingredients are expected,
which will enhance the situation even more. Getting to the bottom of
the story, we think some rain will arrive late Saturday and increase
at night. There should be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
on Sunday. Some of those could be strong late. We expect the most rain
to come on Monday when it should be widespread, along with
thunderstorms. Heavy rain at times and some storms could become
severe. Some of those stronger storms could even start Sunday night.
We are optimistic that we will get 2 or more inches of rain during
that episode.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school playoff games Friday night, it will
be chilly but dry. Temperatures will be in the 40s, but not much wind.
UAB travels to Huntington, West Virginia for Marshall University's
Homecoming. Expect dry weather with a high near 45 during the game.
For the Alabama/Auburn game in Auburn Saturday night, temperatures
should be in the 40s with a brisk east wind and a cold rain. There is
an outside chance that the rain could hold off until after the game,
but we doubt it. We will pinpoint that in tomorrow's editions.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is the day to pause and be thankful
for so much. Family comes first, of course, as well as friends, our
church, good health—you name it. And do not forget our great country.
We should strive daily to keep it a great country and cherish our
freedom. I want to also express my thanks to a certain little 9-pound
animal that won my heart in 30 seconds 5 years ago and still has me
wrapped me around her little paws. I can gather that little girl in my
arms, look her straight in the face and talk to her like she is human.
She seems to fully understand. All she asks is a small treat after
every bathroom walk and as many ballgames as I can spare. She clearly
would like 25 ballgames a day. Life goes on......

...Strong Storms Tonight; Colder Tomorrow ...

AN ICY WIND: Cold air from the Polar regions will invade Alabama today
with a very brisk northwest wind, gusting at times to 30 mph.
Temperatures will go absolutely nowhere; in fact, we expect
temperatures to fall from the low to mid 50s at daybreak into the mid
to upper 40s during the day. Any lingering showers will end by mid-
morning, and the sky will begin to clear slowly during the late
afternoon hours. We will be very close to freezing by daybreak
tomorrow. We are forecasting a good supply of sunshine for the big
shopping day tomorrow with cool temperatures holding in place.

RAIN AGAIN THIS WEEKEND: On Saturday, clouds will return quickly to
Alabama as moist air from the Gulf of Mexico runs up and over a
shallow layer of cool air near the surface. This "overrunning" pattern
should bring widespread rain to the state Saturday afternoon and
Saturday night. At the onset of the precipitation, the rain will
evaporate before reaching the ground, and this is a cooling process
that will set the stage for a cold and wet Saturday night.

IRON BOWL: Rain is likely for the Alabama/Auburn game down in Lee
County Saturday night, and it will be a cold rain. Temperatures should
be in the mid 40s with a very chilly east wind of 10 to 15 mph.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT? A warm front is expected to surge northward
through Alabama Sunday night, putting most of the state in the warm
sector of the storm system by Monday. The forecast strength of the
upper trough and the associated wind fields would suggest some risk of
a potent severe weather threat for our state late Sunday night or
during the day Monday. On the positive side, much of Alabama should
receive two to three inches of rain Saturday through Monday.

FLASH BACK TO 1950: On Thanksgiving Day 1950, football fans at Legion
Field were watching the Crippled Children's Clinic High School
Championship Football game. Many of them were in short sleeves. It was
a springlike 70 degrees. Meanwhile, the U.S. Weather Bureau (as it was
known then) had already issued a stern warning of a massive cold wave.
However, the warning sounded so drastic that people in Alabama could
not believe it and many ignored it. Some folks on the radio scoffed at
the forecast. There was no weather radio in those days. The next
morning on November 24, they did believe it. Here in Birmingham, the
ground was white with snow and blown about by the wind and with
temperatures in the mid 20s. That night the temperature bottomed out
at 5 above zero at Birmingham Airport, so the temperature had a free
fall of 65 degrees in only 38 hours. 14 persons in Alabama died from
the extreme cold. One man was found frozen to death lying in the snow
on Sand Mountain in Jackson County. The other 13 died in house fires.
There was extensive freeze damage over the whole state, especially to
plumbing and automobile radiators.

COULD GET TWO INCHES OF RAIN NEXT SEVERAL DAYS: Our weather is on a
roll and between now and late next Monday we will have at least two
batches of strong thunderstorms. A dry Friday and possibly a wet
football game. We will try to sort all of that out, but some of it is
not sealed in stone. For example, the last two model runs tended to
back up a bit on the steadier rain Saturday. We believe now that the
most extensive rain for the weekend event will be Saturday night and
extending into Sunday. It is too early to be totally specific on the
Auburn/Alabama game in Auburn Saturday night, but there is a good
chance that rain will become steady by that time with game-time
temperatures in the chilly 40s with a brisk east wind. We will try to
be more specific about the Auburn game as well as UAB at Marshall
University in our editions tomorrow.

RISK OF SEVERE WEATHER: We cannot rule it out tonight and again at
some point late in the weekend. The Storm Prediction Center has
outlined a slight risk for almost all of Mississippi and extreme West
Alabama for tonight. The updated outlook includes places as far east
as Florence, Hamilton, Tuscaloosa and Demopolis.

A strong cold front will be approaching from the NW overnight. This
will be one of the triggers for these strong thunderstorms. The most
popular thinking is that the front will reach the Birmingham area
around daybreak tomorrow. Showers and thunderstorms will be numerous
at times overnight, but will gradually diminish late tomorrow morning.
Thanksgiving Day is going to be rather raw with NW winds frequently
over 20 mph and with falling temperatures. We believe the temperature
will level off around 52 for most of the afternoon, but it could be as
low as the upper 40s. See our day-by-day forecast for all of the
details. There are some indications that the severe weather
possibility and heavy rain event planned for Sunday may be delayed
until Sunday night into Monday. The projection is for us to get as
much as 2 inches of rain.

MISCELLANEOUS: Memphis received 2.59 inches of rain early today. A
Tornado Watch was posted this afternoon for most of East Arkansas and
a Severe Thunderstorm Watch covered about the NW half of Louisiana in
extreme East Texas. Early this afternoon temperatures were in the 30s
over NW Arkansas and as low as 22 in Cheyenne. It dropped to 6 below
zero this morning inside Yellowstone National Park and at Northway,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Thanksgiving is one of only two times in
the year that I allow myself to eat sausage balls. Poor Little Miss
Molly will not get any due to a strict rule by the majority owner, but
I may slip her one-half of one. She looks up yearningly at times like
that. Sure enjoyed my morning walk with her. For the first time in a
long time, we encountered the CC (Community Cat). I believe Molly
realized that she was supposed to chase cats after she was a couple of
hours old. She charged toward the cat from about five different
directions, but stopped five feet away. The cat held its ground. Molly
finally gave up and trotted down the walk like she had won the battle.
Life goes on. ....

...Strong Storms Tonight; Colder Tomorrow ...

BIG CHANGES AHEAD: We have some very active weather in the days ahead
for Alabama, with lots of very sharp changes along the way thanks to
two distinct storm systems. The first system will bring increasing
clouds to the state today, and some chance of showers and storms by
afternoon. But, the primary round of showers and storms should come
late tonight, mainly in the 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. time frame, when a
cold front will sweep through our state. The Storm Prediction Center
maintains a slight risk of severe weather for the roughly the northern
half of Alabama tonight, with the primary threat coming from strong
straight line winds. We believe the storms will weaken late tonight as
they drop southward because the air will be more stable after
midnight, and the better dynamics will lift north of the state.
Rainfall amounts of around one-half inch look likely.

A RAW THANKSGIVING DAY: The rain will end tomorrow morning, and as the
rain moves out, much colder air rolls into the state on a brisk
northwest wind. Temperatures will go the wrong way; we will begin the
day in the mid 50s, but we should wind up in the upper 40s by the
midday or afternoon hours. Then, a light freeze is possible for some
of the colder places by daybreak Friday. Our weather will be dry and
cool Friday with ample sunshine and a high in the low to mid 50s.

MORE RAIN OVER THE WEEKEND: In this fast changing weather pattern,
another wave over Texas will pull warm, moist air from the Gulf of
Mexico northward on Saturday, up and over a shallow layer of colder
air near the surface. This is called "overrunning", and rain should
become widespread Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. The rain
initially could evaporate as it falls into drier air; this is a
cooling process, and that should set the stage for a chilly, wet night
Saturday night.

IRON BOWL: We are still forecasting cold and wet weather for this
year's Iron Bowl; rain is likely in Auburn Saturday night with
temperatures only in the 40s. Thunder and lighting is not expected;
just a cold, soaking rain.

MAJOR SEVERE WEATHER THREAT? During the day Sunday, a warm front will
surge northward through Alabama, putting much of the state in the warm
sector of the storm by the afternoon and nighttime hours. As a
deepening surface low moves into Northeast Mississippi, and a strong
upper trough approaches from the west, the stage could be set for a
significant severe weather threat for much of Alabama late Sunday
afternoon and Sunday night. We need to get the system through here
tonight, and we will have a much better look at the threat by tomorrow
and Friday, but it bears close watching by all Alabama residents.

WHITE THANKSGIVING: Rain should change to snow tonight in the general
area from St. Louis to Chicago to Milwaukee; some places in the region
could see 2 to 4 inches of snow.

TWO STORMY PERIODS AHEAD: As of today, the rain deficiency for 2007
in Birmingham was approaching 22 inches. We have only received 26
inches this year. Last year on this same date we had received over
twice that much, 53.41 inches. For that reason, I assume we are all
happy to hear that we have two good rain events on the calendar,
including Thanksgiving Day and again on Saturday. This could make
travel haphazard and it could wet down a certain football game
Saturday night.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: Dry weather for tonight and Wednesday morning.
Showers should reach Central Alabama by afternoon. The more numerous
showers and thunderstorms will come Wednesday night and taper off
Thanksgiving morning. The Storm Prediction Center has a large part of
North and Central Alabama under a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms
Wednesday and Wednesday night here in Central Alabama. The better
chance for that will be Wednesday night. It may be late Wednesday
night, but we will adjust the timing tomorrow morning. Showers and
storms will be ending Thanksgiving morning, as a cold front sweeps
across the state. Most of our weather models that we depend on most
bring the cold front into Central Alabama early Thanksgiving morning.
It will be noticeably colder and temperatures may drop into the upper
40s by afternoon along with NW winds 15 to 25 mph.

Some folks say that Friday after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping
day of the year. Not for me. I head for the hills. The weather will be
ideal for pounding the pavement in the malls. Mostly sunshine, but
chilly with a high of about 54.

OUR SECOND RAIN EVENT: This one looks good also and it is due to a
great extent to our great friend, the Gulf of Mexico. We can always
depend on that nice lady giving us lots of moisture if other things
fall into place. A warm front will be moving north from the Gulf, so
that should let rain start Saturday morning and become more widespread
later in the day and especially Saturday night. It is going to be a
cold rain with highs only in the 50s. As far as the Alabama/Auburn
game in Auburn Saturday night, it looks like chilly, wet weather at
this time, but this is only Tuesday. Timing can change things and we
can be much more specific Wednesday and Thursday. We also have to face
another potential severe weather threat at some point late in the
weekend.

TRAVEL WEATHER: We do not have the space to go into detail here, but
please check the ABC 33/40 Blog for that:

http://www.alabamawx.com

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I appreciate the kind condolences
concerning the death of my Rook partner, Frances Slye. I have passed
them along to the family. Little Miss Molly and Frances were as close
as a human and dog could get. It was love at first sight. Do not know
what I am going to get my little 9-pound pal for Christmas. When she
was 1 and 2 years old, she was addicted to toilet paper. She would
occasionally go into the closet, grab a brand new roll and completely
wallpaper the floor of the master bedroom. On a couple of occasions,
due to our carelessness, it looked like a North Dakota blizzard had
hit that room. In later years (now five years old), it is ballgame
after ballgame. Her energy level has not dropped off even 1% since she
since she is grown. She is either going to make me live longer or kill
me off young, but life is enjoyable and life goes on......

...Rain Returns By Tomorrow Night ...

A WARM NOVEMBER DAY: If we reach our forecast high today of 76
degrees, that will be 13 degrees above the November 20 average high of
63, and within three degrees of the record high for today, 79 set way
back in 1896. But, don't get used to the unseasonably mild weather as
we are expecting a major weather change during the next 72 hours.

RAIN RETURNS: Clouds will increase tomorrow, and a few showers and
storms could reach the western counties of Alabama tomorrow afternoon.
Showers and storms will become more widespread across the state
tomorrow night with the approach of an upper trough and a surface cold
front. At this point, it looks like most of the rain will fall from
about 9:00 tomorrow night through 8:00 a.m. Thursday. Rainfall amounts
of one-half to one inch are likely; a few spots might get a little
over one inch of rain. A few strong thunderstorms could be involved,
but we don't expect widespread severe weather since the primary
dynamics of the system will pass north of Alabama, and most of the
storms will come tomorrow night when the air will be more stable.

CHILLY TURKEY DAY: As the rain moves out early Thursday, much colder
air will roll into the state with a brisk northwest wind gusting as
high as 30 mph at times. Temperatures will go the wrong way; we should
fall through the 50s, with many communities reaching the upper 40s by
mid to late afternoon. We will be close to freezing by daybreak
Friday. The big shopping day on Friday promises to be dry and cool
with a good supply of sunshine.

BIG WEEKEND RAIN EVENT: At this point it looks more and more like a
significant storm system will roar out of the Northwest Gulf of Mexico
over the weekend, setting up a very beneficial rain event for the Deep
South. For Alabama, it looks like the prime time for the rain will
come Saturday night and Sunday, and this one has a good potential for
one to two inches of rain. It will be a case of "overrunning", where
warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will go over colder air near
the surface. This is usually a very good rain setup for Alabama, and
can be a good winter storm setup in the winter. But, snow fans, we are
too early in the season for that.

IRON BOWL PREVIEW: The key to the Alabama-Auburn game is the timing of
the rain moving into East Alabama. There is a chance the rain could
hold off until after the game, but for now we will forecast a cold and
wet evening, with periods of rain and temperatures only in the 40s. We
will be adjusting the forecast for the game
all week, of course, so stay tuned.

HODGEPODGE: Great Falls, Montana reported 7.3 inches of snow
yesterday; that broke the daily snow record for November 19 (the old
record was 4.6 inches in 1978). Coldest spot in the nation yesterday
was Kaltag, Alaska with 24 degrees below zero. Saranac Lake, NY
dropped to 1 degree. Light snow fell yesterday morning in New York City.

=================================================================

A RAW THANKSGIVING DAY: It is that time of year when weather systems
march across the weather map faster and with more energy. This is also
our secondary severe weather season because of that. The weather will
be changing quickly across Alabama the next several days. This
includes two seemingly good rain events where we could get a total
from the two systems of between 1 and 2 inches.

But, first things first. Dry weather continues tonight and Tuesday.
Meanwhile a cold front will be pushing south through the central part
of the nation. As it gets closer, some showers will arrive Wednesday
morning becoming more widespread Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday
night. Our best estimate now is for the cold front to move through
Central Alabama Thursday morning bringing an end to the showers and
turning sharply cooler. Thursday is Thanksgiving, of course, and it
looks rather raw with high temperatures falling into the 50s and NW
winds of 12 to 25 mph. The cold front will drop the temperature into
the mid 30s Friday morning, but Friday should be dry and mostly sunny.

OUR SECOND RAIN EVENT: It all depends on a low pressure system
developing over the NW Gulf of Mexico and spreading moisture inland
aloft over the cool air. We believe the rain will become widespread by
Saturday afternoon and extend through most of Sunday. In fact, some of
the rain could last into Monday. It is too early to be specific, but
it looks generally wet for the Alabama/Auburn game in Auburn Saturday
night. We will be able to be more specific about that by Wednesday.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 5
above zero at Saranac Lake in Upstate New York. I do not have any
specific numbers to prove it, but I believe that location has been the
coldest spot on more mornings than any other place in the 48 states.
Saranac Lake is in a beautiful part of mountainous Upstate New York.
The hottest yesterday was 90 at Indio, California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With our 11-month old great grandson,
Brandon, (living with us), has taken to Little Miss Molly's tiny bell
hanging on the back doorknob. He rares back and slams it against the
door like he is trying to put someone out at first base. It makes a
terrific noise and Little Miss Molly comes running. She is totally
perplexed that someone else is using her bathroom alarm.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Please excuse this personal item, but I wanted to pay
a tribute to my long-time Rook partner, who died suddenly of a heart
attack recently. Her name was Frances Slye, wife of Glenn Slye, in
Vestavia. She and I were partners playing against Judy and Glenn for
over 12 years. We met most Friday nights to play Rook. In all those
years, she never fussed at me one time for my rather wacky playing. It
was an enjoyable run and we will miss her dearly. Another friend of
ours, Gary Morgan, described Frances as the "ultimate lady" and I
agree. She was 79, but more alert than a 60-year old. She was also a
better Rook player than me.....

...Ready for some Turkey?...

After a mostly cloudy Sunday that was damp for some folks, get ready
for some warm weather for the next two days, followed by storms and a
change to cooler as we head toward the weekend and the important
battle for state football bragging rights Saturday on the Plains. It
looks like at least three decent rainfall events are in the cards over
the next two weeks. Let's hope so…

ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES: The exiting disturbance is taking the
showers with it this morning and skies will clear fairly quickly in
the sinking air on the backside. Weak high pressure will ridge into
the area today and with a good supply of sunshine, temperatures will
warm into the lower and middle 60s this afternoon. These readings
will be about ten degrees above normal for late November. Tomorrow,
those readings will be even a few degrees warmer as southerly breezes
continue to transport mild air and moisture into the region. By late
tomorrow, low pressure will be developing to our west and intensifying
as it moves northeast. We should see showers and storms developing on
Wednesday as we find ourselves in the warm sector of the developing
cyclone.

STRONG STORMS? A strong cold front will be approaching Alabama
Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Storms ahead of the
front could be on the strong side, so we will be monitoring for the
possibility of severe weather Wednesday afternoon and evening into
early Thursday morning. The front should push through the area
Thursday morning, with a little light rain through the day along with
sharply cooler temperatures and a strong northwest wind. That theme
will continue into the biggest shopping day of the year on Friday,
just minus the clouds. It will be a brisk day with sunny skies, a
biting northeast wind and highs in the 50s. Some rain may return on
Saturday ahead of a low expected to develop over the northwestern Gulf.

TRAVEL ALERT: The good news is that the Thanksgiving Holiday travel
crunch should not be complicated terribly by weather. There will be
some problems in the central part of the country on Wednesday,
however. The storm system over the Pacific Northwest will affect that
region and the northern Rockies today and tomorrow, but should stay
north of the critical airport hub at Denver. Denver will pick up some
snow on Wednesday as the system moves into the Central Plains. Look
for a decent snow at Kansas City, moving into St. Louis late in the
day. Chicago could be a potential problem on Wednesday afternoon as
heavy rain changes to snow, with several inches possible overnight.
Hopefully, most everyone can get in place by Wednesday evening.
Detroit could be a winter wonderland on Thursday as the Lions suit up
for their traditional Thanksgiving Day game. No major problems are
foreseen for the return travel dates.

ON THIS DATE IN 1981: An unusually early snowstorm struck the Twin
Cities of Minnesota, with as much as a foot of snow reported. The
weight of the heavy snow caused the newly inflated fabric dome of the
Hubert Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis to collapse and rip.

...Rain Late In the Week...

It is a cloudy, dreary looking day across Alabama on this Sunday. A
weakening upper level trough that is moving out of Texas will spark a
few showers across the area today. There is an outside chance that
you could hear a few rumbles of thunder, especially south and west of
a line from Tuscaloosa to Clanton. Rainfall amounts will be light.
The showers will exit to the northeast overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD In the wake of today's disturbance, weak surface
pressure will settle over Alabama for Monday and Tuesday. With a good
supply of sunshine, the mercury will be on the rise. After highs
today near 70, readings will edge into the lower 70s tomorrow and the
middle to upper 70s on Tuesday. The changes will come at midweek.
The trough now over the Pacific Northwest will dig southeastward.
Meanwhile the surface high over the South will shift east, putting
Alabama in a good, moist southerly flow. As a surface low develops to
our west and intensifies while moving northeast, showers and storms
will increase across Alabama on Wednesday. They will become
widespread and stronger Wednesday night into early Thanksgiving Day.
We are starting to get a little concerned about the possibility of
severe weather, especially Wednesday night. Just a heads up to pay
close attention to weather forecasts in the middle of all of your
holiday preparations this week. The strong cold front will push
through the area around turkey time on Thursday putting an end to the
rain by lunch, but a few showers will possibly linger through Thursday
night with cooler and breezy conditions. Friday's huge shopping day
looks to be sunny and but cool and raw with a brisk northerly wind.
There are still indications that we will get back into a damp weather
pattern by the weekend with a low developing over the western Gulf.
Look for big wet weather systems around the 27th and December 1st.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL ALERT: The good news is that getting to Grandma's
house across the U.S. should not be the problem that it can be this
time of year. Denver can be a big headache at Thanksgiving for
travelers, and it will snow there starting Tuesday night, but it does
not look like a big storm for now. Still, check forecasts if you are
traveling through DIA. Heavy rain will affect places like St. Louis
and Cincinnati on Wednesday, with heavy snow to the north of Chicago,
but missing O'Hare. By Thanksgiving, the action shifts to the
Northeast, but affects should be limited and the big hubs should be
fine. Weekend forecasts look ok across the country.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: A strong onshore wind over Southeast Texas and
Southwest Louisiana pumped copious amounts of moisture into that
region yesterday, producing widespread rain and storms. Flooding was
reported over parts of Fayette and Gonzalez Counties east of San
Antonio last night. Radar estimates indicate that as much as four to
six inches fell in the areas around LaGrange and Farm to Market Road
77 from LaGrange to Schulenburg was under water. The rainfall was
slowly diminishing this morning. An approaching storm system brought
warm air to the Pacific Northwest where the 63F reading at Portland,
OR was a record for the date. It was 67F yesterday in Flagstaff, AZ,
also a record. Winter Storm Watches are in effect for SE Oregon,
northern Idaho and western Montana where up to a foot of snow may fall
between tonight and Monday afternoon.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Litchfield County, Connecticut suffered its
greatest power outage ever as a major winter storm brought a
combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain to the area. Over fifty
percent of the county was without electivity at the height of the
storm, leaving 100,000 people in the dark. Schools were closed for
several days, and it took over a week to restore power to everyone.
