...Rain Returns Over The Weekend...

A BRIGHTER DAY: While temperatures today will remain about 10 degrees
below normal, the day will be a little more comfortable than yesterday
thanks to a good supply of sunshine and lighter wind. We are expecting
a high this afternoon somewhere between 51 and 55 degrees for most
communities. Tonight will be clear and cold again, with a light freeze
likely by daybreak tomorrow.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school playoff games tonight, it will be
chilly but dry. Temperatures will be in the 40s, but not much wind.
Some stadiums could be in the upper 30s by the final whistle. UAB
travels to Huntington, West Virginia for Marshall University's
Homecoming. Expect dry weather with a high near 45 during the game.
For the Alabama/Auburn game in Auburn tomorrow night, temperatures
should be in the 40s with a brisk east wind and a cold rain. Not
exactly chamber of commerce weather.

RAIN RETURNS OVER THE WEEKEND: A complex storm system will get its act
together to the west over the weekend, and will bring a good chance of
beneficial rain to Alabama, but also the chance of severe weather
before it gets out of here. Rain should begin to develop by the mid to
late afternoon hours tomorrow as moist air goes up and over a shallow
layer of colder air near the surface. This rain will become widespread
tomorrow night, and it will be a cold rain with temperatures mostly in
the 40s.

During the day Sunday, a warm front will do its best to push northward
through Alabama, and by Sunday night a good portion of the state will
be in the warm sector of the storm system. As the core of the dynamic
weather system passes through here, we have a significant chance of
severe thunderstorms Sunday night and Monday. For now, it looks like
the greatest chance of severe storms will come from around midnight
Sunday night through the mid-morning hours on Monday. This is when the
atmosphere tends to be rather stable, but in this case strong dynamics
should overcome the weaker instability and set the stage for severe
thunderstorms. Based on the projected wind fields and shear, a few
tornadoes will be possible as well.

All Alabamians will need to pay attention to our forecast of this
storm system over the weekend since some adjustments might have to be
made in the timing of the event. It might not be a bad idea to review
your severe weather safety plan in case things get rough around here
late Sunday night and Monday.

FROM ALASKA: This report from our Skywatcher in Girdwood, Alaska, Todd
Foisy: "We're getting another big rainstorm. It's also very windy. My
weather station recorded its highest wind gust since I put it in early
last winter: 31 mph. I know that doesn't sound like much, but I'm in
dense trees and it takes a lot to get that type of wind. Ridgetop
weather stations in the area gusted as high as 122 mph. We're up to 32
days straight of measurable precipitation." Todd also reports a snow
depth of 5 inches.
