COOL NIGHTS; UNSEASONABLY MILD AFTERNOONS: Jason Simpson commented
early today that when he drove in to work at ABC 33/40, he encountered
some of the thickest fog he has ever seen. The fog did not cover the
entire area, but it was extremely dense in spots. At times you could
be driving along in good visibility and then run into a wall of thick
fog, especially in low areas. At one time, visibility was reported as
zero at Birmingham Airport. Another temperature inversion this
morning. Black Creek in NE Etowah County had some frost and a little
freezing fog with a low temperature of 31. In NE Jefferson County,
Pinson had 43 degrees, while at the same time Clay had 51 on a ridge
off Deerfoot Parkway.

Looks like some more patchy fog could develop tonight, probably not
as widespread as the last two nights, but a nuisance anyway. Our main
weather story is the continued very mild weather for mid December.
Nights are pleasantly cool, but we expect highs in the low 70s, at
last through Monday. Looks like a sunny weekend. We have introduced a
chance of some showers next Tuesday night. Timing is uncertain. In
fact, one of our weather models indicates the next significant chance
of rain could hold off until next Thursday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still looks great for the SWAC Championship Game
at Legion Field Saturday afternoon with plenty of sunshine and a high
temperature near 72. Alabama A&M will entertain Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: And it is a troublesome time for the Pacific
Northwest, although the latest vicious storm has now moved into SW
Canada and conditions will settle down. Waves over 20 feet high were
expected along the Washington coast this morning with wind gusts as
high as 75 to 100 mph in the Cascade Mountains along with a raging
blizzard. The snow pack has really built up in the Pacific Northwest
high country, but only about 12% of the lower 48 states was covered by
snow today. The depth at Stampede Pass in Washington State has reached
244 inches. Other amounts include 207 inches at Dollarhide Summit, 180
inches in Lost Dog Canyon, 178 inches at Jackwhacker Gulch and 65
inches at Pigtail Peak (I simply love those place names). There is 41
inches on the ground at Toney Grove Lake in the Wasatch Mountains in
Utah—one of our old camping sites…coldest temperatures this morning
included 9 at Aberdeen, South Dakota and 30 below zero at Chalkyitsik,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The fog was so thick this morning that
Molly looked like a little fuzzy black glob at the end of the leash.
Later we took another walk in the bright sunlight. I had tippy-toed
from my office to the kitchen. I have to pass right in front of my
ex-recliner. When I did, she reached out and poked me on the leg with
her paw. Translation: playtime. Hope you saw that great photograph on
the front page of Section C in the Birmingham News by Joe Songer.
Great picture of an old barn and tree in the dense fog. Joe shoots a
lot of my kind of pictures…also, check out the nice story in the
current Southern Living about Little River Canyon. I still insist that
this state has great natural beauty, if only you get out and prowl
around…I love prowling with little Miss Molly, but that is only for
one-half mile. Life goes on....

THE OLD THERMOMETER LOSING ITS MIND: We all know that we should not
get used to this mild weather in mid December, because eventually we
will have to pay for it in the form of a change to colder with the old
heater running 24 hours. Only thing, we do not see that happening any
time soon. Our daytime temperatures are expected to average about 18
degrees warmer than normal for at least through next Monday. Those
highs will be in the low to mid 70s. It is expected to also stay dry
through that time.

Sometimes things happen in weather that are subtle, but it can drive
a forecaster crazy. We had a very shallow, but sharp, temperature
inversion last night. Dense fog formed and the fog had to wait until
the inversion was broken before it could completely lift. As a result,
temperatures early this afternoon were hanging close to 60 in the
Tennessee Valley and only 55 in Tuscaloosa, which is a lot lower than
we had forecast. Some more patchy fog is expected to develop tonight,
but it should not be as widespread.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great for the SWAC Championship Game at
Legion Field in Birmingham Saturday afternoon between Arkansas-Pine
Bluff and Alabama A&M. Near total sunshine and about 73 for a high
temperature during the game.

WE APPRECIATE OUR READERS: Bill Hardekopf reminded us today that the
subscriber list for our twice-a-day e-forecast has swelled to nearly
21, 000. We appreciate every one of our readers. You can subscribe to
it free by going to the ABC 33/40 weather page and clicking e-forecast
in the left side menu.

A BUSY TIME IN THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Over 7 inches of rain has
fallen today in West Palm Beach as heavy showers occur across South
Florida…all the way across the nation to the opposite corner, a very
vicious storm approaching the Oregon and Washington coast. Seas are
expected to build to 20-25 feet this afternoon and build to 38-42 feet
through Friday morning. Destructive waves may hit the beaches and
structures with no warning. Debris and logs will be tossed on shore.
This can trap people and cause them to drown in the huge waves. The
NWS in Portland warns that the beach areas will become exceedingly
dangerous. Winds may gust as high as 65 miles an hour…coldest in the
lower 48 this morning was 4 above zero south of Alamosa, Colorado…it
was 33 below in Fort Yukon, Alaska…warmest yesterday 83 in Naples and
Ft. Myers, Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Survived my first 24 hours as a great
grandfather without any adverse reaction. The little fellow is as cute
as he can be. Our little baby is named Little Miss Molly. She acts so
much like a human sometimes that I talk to her as if she was. Sure am
glad you can't hear our conversation. We took a long walk this morning
and we can hardly find a leaf still on a tree. We only heard one bird.
It sure is quiet on the walking track lately. We assume that all of
the birds have raised their young and they have flown on to greater
things. We don't want to lose our old crows. They are part of our
lives. Looks like I'm going to have to wait until after the holidays
to begin my children's book about Little Miss Molly. She keeps piling
up fresh material for me to use. One of these days I also want to
write my weather book recalling 40 years of weather work. The title of
that one will be, Scatterbrains and Scattered Showers. Life goes on
and I get behinder and behinder....

...Spring-Like Warmth Continues...

We are forecasting a high of 72 degrees today in Birmingham. That is
16 degrees above the "normal" high of 56, and within five degrees of
the record high for today, 77 set back in 1971. We also note that 72
is the normal high for Birmingham on April 5, 6, 7, and 8. Needless to
say, this is too warm for the middle of December. Like yesterday,
morning fog will give way to brilliant afternoon sunshine.

We don't any real chance in this pattern through early next week;
mostly sunny warm days and fair cool nights. We should also mention we
don't expect any freezing temperatures around here through Wednesday
of next week.

NEXT RAIN: For now it looks like our next significant rain event will
come in about one week, on Thursday December 21. A strong storm system
coming out of the plains states promises to bring a decent rain event
to the state then, and perhaps a few strong thunderstorms. Following
that rain event colder air will return to the Deep South, pushing
temperatures back to levels near or below normal. Is is almost
impossible to nail down details so far in advance; but most of the
models are suggesting Christmas Day will be cool and dry. We will be
able to bring a specific forecast for Christmas to you by Monday of
next week.

WARMER WINTERS? I hear all the time from people that tell me they
"can't remember winters being this warm" in Alabama. We all tend to
have selective memories. The only time we have reached 80 degrees in
December was in 1951 (December 7). In December 1971, new record highs
were established on three days when the mercury soared into the upper
70s. Every Alabama winter has featured significant warm spells; it is
simply function of Alabama being a low latitude state, much closer to
the equator than the North Pole.

SPACE WEATHER: A major geomagnetic storm is forecast today for our
planet, thanks to a major solar flare on the surface of the sun about
36 hours ago. A significant display of the Northern Lights is likely
tonight, as far south as the northern part of the United States. While
auroras have been seen in Alabama before, they are relatively rare.

HODGEPODGE: Fayetteville, Arkansas tied their record high yesterday
with 66 degrees. Just a week ago there were in bone chilling cold with
a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. St. Louis warmed to a balmy 63
degrees. Here in Alabama, the warm spot was Dothan with 75.
Nationally, the warmest places were all in Florida. Fort Myers,
Naples, and Punta Gorda all reported 83 degrees.

SIX YEARS AGO TODAY we were watching a major storm system to the west
of the state, which was going to bring a severe weather risk to
Alabama two days later. On December 16, 2000 an F4 tornado rolled
through the southern part of Tuscaloosa, killing 11 people and
injuring many others. I will write more about that big event on the
ABC 33/40 Weather Blog tomorrow.

SOME MUCH NEEDED RAIN: A broad band of showers has been slowly
moving eastward across Alabama since mid morning. The showers do not
seem to be in a big hurry. The slow movement is giving some
communities good amounts of rain.

There has been very little lightning indicated, however, Tornado
Warnings were issued for a time for Choctaw and Marengo Counties in SW
Alabama.

The band of showers will continue moving slowly eastward. Here in
Central Alabama, including the Birmingham area, the showers should
diminish greatly by midnight. The sky will be clearing tomorrow
morning and then we are home free for lots of sunshine and mild
afternoons all the way into the weekend. In fact, it appears we may be
rain free into the middle of next week. While nights will be cool, the
afternoons could not be nicer for Christmas shoppers or anything you
need to do outdoors. For the next five days, afternoon temperatures
will be more than 10 degrees warmer than normal for mid December, with
some afternoons sporting highs above 70.

A COLD DECEMBER SO FAR: Let's spotlight Tuscaloosa for this report.
If you stepped outside today, you would not realize that December so
far has been very cold. At Tuscaloosa Airport, the first 11 days
averaged 9 degrees colder than normal and the temperature dropped to
freezing or lower on 10 of the 11 days. On December 8, it was 18
degrees below normal. We need this rain. Before today, Tuscaloosa had
received only 0.09 this month and that is typical of the entire state.

THE EVER INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: Bitter cold arctic air has
vacated the far north and Alaska, at least temporarily. Here in the
lower 48, the coldest temperature this morning was 3 above zero at
Alamosa, Waverly and Gunnison—all in Colorado. In the SW part of the
state, Telluride ski area got 10 inches of new snow with 41 inches on
the ground. (Our own, Bill Murray, used to manage a new swanky hotel
in Telluride.)

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: You may not believe this, but I have
been ambushed 8 times today. That is how many times I have made the
treacherous journey from my weather office to the kitchen for a snack
or a cup of coffee. Even if I tippy-toe, Molly hears me. She jumps out
of my recliner and tosses one of her balls at me. Translation: "Big
guy, you've just got to play ball for a moment." I did almost every
time. There were a couple of times when she was too sleepy to leave
the recliner, but she raised her head and gave me the sniff test as I
went by to make sure I did not have a snack. She is a little beggar,
but the majority owner of Molly has made me pledge not to give her any
more human food. Life goes on and I try to avoid looking little Miss
Molly in the eye.....

APRIL IN DECEMBER: These balmy temperatures bathing Alabama are more
like we should have in early April than mid December. We do not see
any reason that those will drop appreciably anytime soon. It looks
like mild weather will continue until at least the middle of next
week. Along with the mildness will be dry weather all the way through
the weekend. It will be fairly cool tonight and for the next several
nights, but afternoons will feature temperatures in the low 70s all
across Central Alabama.

Virtually the whole state got rain yesterday. The amounts were rather
variable with one of the heavier amounts over 1 inch in Demopolis.
Over on the east side of the state, the amounts were lighter. We were
hoping for some good amounts up in NE Alabama, where there have been
some forest fire problems.

EARLY LOOK AT FOOTBALL WEATHER: The SWAC Championship game is not
until Saturday afternoon at Legion Field between Alabama A&M and
Arkansas-Pine Bluff. However, it looks great with mostly sunny mild
weather and peak temperatures during the game around 73. We will have
a more specific forecast about Friday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER IS ALWAYS INTERESTING: Did you know that the 15
deadliest tornadoes in USA history all occurred during the prime
spring severe weather season that lasts into June over the Northern
Plains and Upper Midwest? Two of those deadliest tornadoes occurred in
March, 5 each in April and May and 3 in June…the coldest official
temperature ever recorded in the State of Georgia was 17 below zero on
January 27, 1940 at CCC Camp No. F16…the coldest in the lower 48 this
morning was 4 above at Alamosa, Colorado and the coldest in Alaska was
29 below at Fort Yukon…up in the Canadian Yukon it was a relatively
mild 8 below this morning…the Pacific Northwest has really caught it
this year and now another major storm system could produce as much as
5 inches or more in that region in the next 5 days. An intense storm
will move inland. The NWS in Portland warns that this storm could
produce the strongest winds so far this season…Seattle was drenched
with 15.63 inches of rain in November—more than 10 inches above
normal…strong winds over the Northern Rockies gusted as high as 66 mph
at Dry Creek, Montana and 55 mph at Sweet Grass, Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes Little Miss Molly can demand
to go outside at the most inconvenient time. It was especially so
today, because we were expecting a telephone call from Helen Keller
Hospital in Sheffield that we had become great grandparents. Woe is
me! Little 7-pound Brandon Alexander was born late this morning to
Josh and Sara Medina. His initials are BAM. Everyone is in excellent
condition except me. If Little Miss Molly keeps reversing my aging,
one of these years I may become a great, great, great, great
grandfather. By then I will probably be older than anybody in the Old
Testament. Life goes on. I just wish Molly could be around for 100
years, because she cheers up everyone she meets. I thought she was
going to take forever walking the Molly Parkway this morning, so I
tapped her rear end with the little blue scoop. She looked real hurt
and disappointed. I apologized, but maybe the little blue scoop can

Prestige Alarm specializes in monitoring security systems
without the use of expensive phone lines or unreliable cell phones.

How do we do this? Prestige Alarm is one of the few companies

In a typical system, if your phone line is cut or fails,
then you have no communication to the outside world.

Since we do not use phone lines, we can still dispatch the
fire or police when the emergency requires. Despite cut
phone lines, storms or over worked cell phones, we still
get the signal through.

We do not offer the free systems like some of the other
security companies. But you do not want to trust in free

...Rain Returns To Alabama...

Some needed rain will fall on Alabama during the next 24 hours.
Birmingham's last measurable rain was 11 days ago, but only 0.09" fell
during that event at the first of the month. The last really good
soaking here was back on November 15, when 1.01" was recorded at the
Birmingham International Airport. We also note that our rainfall
surplus for the year has dropped to 2.53" in Birmingham; the actual
rain total since January 1 is 53.62"

Showers will move into West Alabama this morning, and most of the
state will have rain by mid to late afternoon. Periods of rain will
continue tonight, with a few thunderstorms possibly involved. We don't
expect any severe weather with marginal instability and wind fields.
Rainfall amounts of around one-half inch are likely, with isolated
amounts to three-quarters of an inch, and the best chance of rain will
come from about 1:00 p.m. through 12:00 midnight.

DECEMBER WARMTH: An upper air pattern change will mean mild weather
for Alabama for the foreseeable future; we expect a high today in the
low 60s, about five degrees above normal for December 12. Tomorrow,
the sky should become mostly sunny during the day, and that sunshine
will push the afternoon high into the upper 60s. There is a good
chance we will see 70 degrees on Thursday as our weather remains dry
and very mild.

On Thursday, a storm system will form over the central Gulf of Mexico,
and promises to bring rain to much of the Florida peninsula by Friday
and possibly Saturday. But, that system will remain well to the south
of us, and at this point we expect our weather to remain dry and very
mild through the upcoming weekend. We should also note that mornings
will be warmer; we generally expect early morning temperatures to
remain well above freezing for the next seven days.

A MILD MONDAY: Troy, Montgomery, and Mobile all warmed to 73 degrees
yesterday. Tuscaloosa's high was 71, and the high at Pinson was 70.
Quite a warm-up considering it was as cold as 8 degrees in Alabama
last Friday morning (that observation was from Belle Mina in the
Tennessee Valley). To the west, Greenwood, MS soared to 76, while
Vicksburg reached 75.

ROAMING: The coldest spot in the "lower 48" yesterday was in Arizona
of all places; the observation station at Grand Canyon reported a low
of 1 degrees. The coldest spot in Alaska was Northway with 18 below
zero; nothing like the severe cold they had just 10 days ago (readings
as low as -40). In the Pacific, Typhoon Utor swept out of the
Philippines, killing four people, including three children, and
stranding thousands yesterday after high winds and waves tore up power
lines and communication links. Utor was the fifth typhoon to hit the
Philippines since September.

...Fourteen Shopping Days Left...

Have you gotten your Christmas shopping done? It is about time for me
to get started. Tonight will be a good time to get a little done,
with dry and fairly mild conditions. Tuesday night…not so good.
Decent again on Wednesday. Not sure about Thursday. The weekend…all
right. Then not so good the following week, at least Monday through
Thursday. And it might not be perfect right up until Christmas Day.
That's your handy dandy holiday shopping forecast.

WHITE CHRISTMAS? So, the shopping weather might be going down hill,
but the good news is, no really cold air is in sight. Of course, a
little snow for Christmas couldn't be a bad thing, but don't get your
hopes up.

HOLIDAY WEEK PEEK: First, there is the Papa John Bowl at Legion
Field on the 23rd…looks like weather for that could be good. Of
course, it is a bit far out. Then Christmas Eve looks like it could
be showery, with those showers continuing into Christmas Day. Not a
real washout, but could be on the damp and cloudy side.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: That was a pretty significant little disturbance
yesterday. Today, partly cloudy skies will prevail and will a good
amount of sunshine, temperatures will warm into the lower 60s.
Moisture levels are on a steady rise, and so will the cloud cover by
tonight. It will be positively balmy tonight, with lows in the lower
50s. A warm front will move through overnight and we will be in the
warm sector of a developing low pressure system over Iowa by tomorrow
morning. Showers will be on the increase during the day tomorrow. By
evening, a line of showers and storms will be pushing toward West
Alabama. It looks like there could be a chance of severe weather to
our northwest, over western Tennessee, but it does not appear likely
here.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Yesterday morning, the GFS hinted at additional
low pressure development over South Alabama on Thursday, but that was
discounted in the afternoon run. If it does happen, there could be
rain on Thursday, especially over southeastern sections. But for now,
we will discount that possibility. We will call for sunny to partly
cloudy conditions starting Thursday and continuing into the weekend.
Our rain chances will be on the increase by Monday into the following
week.

JAPAN'S FIRST F4 TORNADO: When you think about tornadoes, you don't
usually think about Japan. On December 11, 1990, a powerful low
pressure system spawned two supercell thunderstorms in Chiba
Prefecture southeast of Tokyo, Japan. Two tornadoes were spawned by
the storm. One struck Mobara, is the first violent (F4) tornado
recorded in the country. It caused the most damage from a Japanese
tornado since 1960. The tornado injured 78 people and damaged over
1,000 homes. Japan's deadliest tornado struck a town on Hokkaido on
November 7, 2006, killing nine.

...Red Sky At Morning...

Check out the ABC3340 Blog for a photo from Vic Bell of a beautiful
sunrise this morning. It was a prime example of the old adage "Red
sky at morning, sailors take warning. Red Sky at night, sailor's
delight." So when does the bad weather begin? Bad weather is
relative in this situation. Radars this morning are showing quite a
bit of green and even some yellow over West Central Alabama. Most of
it was not reaching the ground, and I could not find any surface
observations that showed precipitation, but I could imagine a few
sprinkles across Central Alabama as this activity passes through. It
is associated with a disturbance in the broad WSW flow aloft over
Alabama. The rising sun reflects off the bottom of those
stratocumulus and cirrostratus clouds, creating the beautiful red and
orange sky. The fact that those clouds are east of us mean that we
are in a changing weather pattern. Now the good news is, they are
associated with the disturbance, and it will pass quickly today with
just a good amount of clouds, but little in the way of rain. Our next
good rain chance comes Tuesday. So in this case, red sky at morning
works out as a predictor. It usually does…

THROUGH MIDWEEK: The heavier clouds should break up some this
afternoon and skies will go clear for a time tonight. Temperatures
will be cool, but not cold, with lows in the middle 30s. Tomorrow
should be partly cloudy, with mild afternoon readings up around 60
degrees. It will become cloudy again tomorrow night as persistent
southeasterly winds drive more moisture into the area. Tuesday will
be a cloudy, slightly breezy day with a chance of showers, especially
by afternoon. An area of showers and storms will move across the
state during the evening hours. But with dewpoints forecast to only
reach 50 degrees or so, the likelihood of severe weather will be low.
A Pacific cold front will move across the area early on Wednesday,
accompanied by a few showers before lunch.

REST OF THE WEEK: Rather benign weather, with seasonable
temperatures and mostly partly cloudy skies will prevail into the
weekend. Changes will begin by Sunday in advance of our next storm
system. Sunday looks breezy with mostly cloudy skies as a more
powerful storm system tries to plow into high pressure centered along
the East Coast. Looks like a fairly dynamic storm system will be in
here around Tuesday the 19th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Sending home Federal workers in Washington DC early
because of weather can cost as much as $60 million per day. On this
date, as a winter storm threatened the nation's capital, volunteer
storm spotters were used to identify precipitation falling between
Washington and Richmond. The spotters' identification of the type of
precipitation as sleet instead of snow allowed forecasters to
accurately predict that the precip would change to rain, calling off
the shutdown and saving taxpayers. Just another way that the 160,000
trained volunteer weather spotters in the United States save dollars,
and lives.

...A Nice Sunday...

Today is going to be a nice day across North and Central Alabama. A
disturbance passing to our north will bring some clouds during the
day, and the sky could be completely cloudy for some time. But a
moderating airmass on southeasterly winds and available sunshine will
push temperatures back to near 60 degrees today. It will be the
beginning of a run of temperatures that are near normal for much of
the coming week.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature partly cloudy skies and mild
temperatures. Skies will become cloudy Monday night. By Tuesday,
developing low pressure to the west of Alabama will cause southerly
winds to increase across the state. As moisture levels continue to
rise, a few showers will develop during the day, but the main action
should come Tuesday night. Recent runs of the GFS speed the system up
just a tad, and push a line of showers and storms into the state
during the evening hours. We still do not expect much in the way of
strong storms, but the timing is a bit more favorable if the line
arrives in the evening. We will monitor the situation. The activity
should be moving out of eastern sections by early Wednesday with some
clearing late the day. The airmass behind the cold front is not
Arctic in nature, so no really cold air is in sight. Look for a major
coastal low to develop along the East Coast by late in the week. The
GFS makes it into a hurricane force monster by Friday off the
Delmarva.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Did you see the news story about the tornado that
hit a London suburb on Thursday? It injured six people. Typhoon
Durian, which struck the Philippines on November 29th is now the
deadliest tropical cyclone of 2006. The Supertyphoon killed 1,226
people in the Philippines.

NHC DIRECTOR NAMED: On Wednesday of this past week, Max Mayfield's
replacement as Director of the National Hurricane Center was named.
It is Bill Proenza, long time Director of the National Weather
Service's Southern Region. Proenza is working with Mayfield and the
team at the NHC now to wrap up the 2006 season and get ready for
conferences in the Spring. Proenza's first official day will be
January 3rd.

2007 HURRICANE SEASON PREDICTION: Dr. William Gray and his team of
hurricane researchers have released their predictions for the 2007
North Atlantic Hurricane Season. They are calling for an above
average count. More in today's blog.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Greek Television reported that a shower of
tiny fish rained down on the village of Korona after a strong
thunderstorm. Experts reported that the unexpected bounty was
probably caused when a waterspout picked up the small fish from Lake
Doirani.
