THE OLD THERMOMETER LOSING ITS MIND: We all know that we should not
get used to this mild weather in mid December, because eventually we
will have to pay for it in the form of a change to colder with the old
heater running 24 hours. Only thing, we do not see that happening any
time soon. Our daytime temperatures are expected to average about 18
degrees warmer than normal for at least through next Monday. Those
highs will be in the low to mid 70s. It is expected to also stay dry
through that time.

Sometimes things happen in weather that are subtle, but it can drive
a forecaster crazy. We had a very shallow, but sharp, temperature
inversion last night. Dense fog formed and the fog had to wait until
the inversion was broken before it could completely lift. As a result,
temperatures early this afternoon were hanging close to 60 in the
Tennessee Valley and only 55 in Tuscaloosa, which is a lot lower than
we had forecast. Some more patchy fog is expected to develop tonight,
but it should not be as widespread.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great for the SWAC Championship Game at
Legion Field in Birmingham Saturday afternoon between Arkansas-Pine
Bluff and Alabama A&M. Near total sunshine and about 73 for a high
temperature during the game.

A BUSY TIME IN THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Over 7 inches of rain has
fallen today in West Palm Beach as heavy showers occur across South
Florida…all the way across the nation to the opposite corner, a very
vicious storm approaching the Oregon and Washington coast. Seas are
expected to build to 20-25 feet this afternoon and build to 38-42 feet
through Friday morning. Destructive waves may hit the beaches and
structures with no warning. Debris and logs will be tossed on shore.
This can trap people and cause them to drown in the huge waves. The
NWS in Portland warns that the beach areas will become exceedingly
dangerous. Winds may gust as high as 65 miles an hour…coldest in the
lower 48 this morning was 4 above zero south of Alamosa, Colorado…it
was 33 below in Fort Yukon, Alaska…warmest yesterday 83 in Naples and
Ft. Myers, Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Survived my first 24 hours as a great
grandfather without any adverse reaction. The little fellow is as cute
as he can be. Our little baby is named Little Miss Molly. She acts so
much like a human sometimes that I talk to her as if she was. Sure am
glad you can't hear our conversation. We took a long walk this morning
and we can hardly find a leaf still on a tree. We only heard one bird.
It sure is quiet on the walking track lately. We assume that all of
the birds have raised their young and they have flown on to greater
things. We don't want to lose our old crows. They are part of our
lives. Looks like I'm going to have to wait until after the holidays
to begin my children's book about Little Miss Molly. She keeps piling
up fresh material for me to use. One of these days I also want to
write my weather book recalling 40 years of weather work. The title of
that one will be, Scatterbrains and Scattered Showers. Life goes on
and I get behinder and behinder....
