...Spring-Like Warmth Continues...
We are forecasting a high of 72 degrees today in Birmingham. That is
16 degrees above the "normal" high of 56, and within five degrees of
the record high for today, 77 set back in 1971. We also note that 72
is the normal high for Birmingham on April 5, 6, 7, and 8. Needless to
say, this is too warm for the middle of December. Like yesterday,
morning fog will give way to brilliant afternoon sunshine.
We don't any real chance in this pattern through early next week;
mostly sunny warm days and fair cool nights. We should also mention we
don't expect any freezing temperatures around here through Wednesday
of next week.
NEXT RAIN: For now it looks like our next significant rain event will
come in about one week, on Thursday December 21. A strong storm system
coming out of the plains states promises to bring a decent rain event
to the state then, and perhaps a few strong thunderstorms. Following
that rain event colder air will return to the Deep South, pushing
temperatures back to levels near or below normal. Is is almost
impossible to nail down details so far in advance; but most of the
models are suggesting Christmas Day will be cool and dry. We will be
able to bring a specific forecast for Christmas to you by Monday of
next week.
WARMER WINTERS? I hear all the time from people that tell me they
"can't remember winters being this warm" in Alabama. We all tend to
have selective memories. The only time we have reached 80 degrees in
December was in 1951 (December 7). In December 1971, new record highs
were established on three days when the mercury soared into the upper
70s. Every Alabama winter has featured significant warm spells; it is
simply function of Alabama being a low latitude state, much closer to
the equator than the North Pole.
SPACE WEATHER: A major geomagnetic storm is forecast today for our
planet, thanks to a major solar flare on the surface of the sun about
36 hours ago. A significant display of the Northern Lights is likely
tonight, as far south as the northern part of the United States. While
auroras have been seen in Alabama before, they are relatively rare.
HODGEPODGE: Fayetteville, Arkansas tied their record high yesterday
with 66 degrees. Just a week ago there were in bone chilling cold with
a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. St. Louis warmed to a balmy 63
degrees. Here in Alabama, the warm spot was Dothan with 75.
Nationally, the warmest places were all in Florida. Fort Myers,
Naples, and Punta Gorda all reported 83 degrees.
SIX YEARS AGO TODAY we were watching a major storm system to the west
of the state, which was going to bring a severe weather risk to
Alabama two days later. On December 16, 2000 an F4 tornado rolled
through the southern part of Tuscaloosa, killing 11 people and
injuring many others. I will write more about that big event on the
ABC 33/40 Weather Blog tomorrow.
