A FROSTY MORNING: For many Alabama communities, the lowest
temperature so far this season occurred overnight. In some areas, the
wind did not want to go to sleep, so they remained above freezing.
Here is a selection of the coldest temperatures around the state early
this morning.

22 in Belle Mina (located a few miles NE of Decatur)
24 at Black Creek with heavy frost (NE Etowah County)
25 in Owens Crossroads
26 in Hanceville, Gaylesville and Crossville
27 at Scottsboro, Ft. Payne and in Bankhead National Forest
28 in Decatur, Meridianville, Cullman, Pinson and Russellville Airport

This afternoon, a big high pressure area was centered over West
Tennessee and West Kentucky. It will drift down across Alabama
tonight. It will be just as cold as last night in many Alabama
communities, especially in the valleys. But after tonight, a warming
trend will set in. Lows by Sunday morning should be closer to 40 and
between 45 and 50 on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Highs will recover
to the 60s starting tomorrow.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cold for the high school games tonight
with temperatures falling into the 40s. In college games on Saturday,
Alabama plays Mississippi State at Tuscaloosa at 11:30 a.m.
Temperatures should peak in the low 60s and fall into the upper 40s by
the end of the game. Arkansas State will be at Auburn. It should be
about 63 for the 1:30 kickoff, falling into the 50s in the fourth
quarter.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A weak area of low pressure continues near the SE
coast of Belize…still disorganized…it is still so close to land that
tropical development is not expected. However, heavy rain is possible
during the next day or so across the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize,
Guatemala and Honduras

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Very cold in the Great Smoky Mountain high
country this morning. It dropped to 15 on Newfound Gap and 11 atop Mt.
LeConte…in North Carolina, it was 13 at Beech Mountain and on
Grandfather Mountain and 12 atop Mt. Mitchell…the coldest in the lower
48 was 4 at Minot, North Dakota.

SCATTERED FROST AND A FREEZE BY MORNING: Plenty of cold air moved
into Alabama overnight and dropped temperatures all the way down to
the mid 30s over the north. It was 35 in the Bankhead National Forest
and in Decatur and 36 in Huntsville, Meridianville, Muscle Shoals and
Cullman. The NWS has a freeze warning for parts of North Alabama
tonight.

This afternoon a very large high pressure system was sprawled all the
way from Missouri far up into Canada. This is pumping cold air
southward over much of the USA. This type setup gives lake effect snow
for place like Buffalo. Tonight temperatures will drop as low as the
mid 20s in the Great Smoky Mountains. Across Central Alabama, we are
looking for an average low tonight of about 31 with scattered frost.
The frost may be a little heavier in the valleys and don't be
surprised to hear of low temperatures tomorrow morning of around 28 in
places like Pinson, Hamilton, Bridgeport and Valley Head.

Looks like dry weather for our region through Monday. It will be cold
again Friday night. We will do good to reach 60 Friday afternoon. For
the rest of the weekend, the highs will be in the mid 60s. In Football
Weather, clear and chilly for Friday night high school games and
mostly sunny weather with ideal temperatures in the 60s for Saturday
afternoon college games.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A low pressure area just east of Belize continues
to produce showers and thunderstorms over the NW Caribbean.
Interestingly, it has become a little better organized, but upper
level winds are not friendly enough for development.

THE IIMPORTANCE OF SNOW COVER: In winter, weather forecasters here
in Alabama pay attention to snow cover, even if it is not in our area.
This can have an effect on our temperatures. For example, if there is
a good solid snow cover from about Arkansas and Missouri northward and
a decent north wind, temperatures here in Alabama can be several
degrees lower than they would be without that snow. This can fool
weather models. This is because the north wind is chilled more as it
blows across the vast snow field. We especially are concerned when all
of Alaska and Canada is snow covered and the coverage extends halfway
down into the USA. It is interesting to note that today about 90% of
Alaska and Canada already has a snow cover and we believe that is an
early start. We will keep one of our weather eyes pointed north all
winter…the coldest temperature in the USA this morning was 11 below
zero at Arctic Village, Alaska…in the lower 48 it was 5 below at
Polebridge, Montana and 1 above at Wolf Point out on those wide open
plains of NE Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Too busy again yesterday to spend much
time with Little Miss Molly. Since she keeps a timecard on me, late
last night when we told her it was time to go night-night, she ran and
hid. My wife was trying to find her. Molly evaded her and went in the
big bedroom, hopped up on the king sized bed and tried to hide behind
a blanket that was stacked there. She looked unhappy when
discovered…Molly's little friend, Bridgett, who lives at the north end
of the walking track, also insisted on running to the door Halloween
night to greet all the kids. Molly and Bridgett are like breeds, so I
guess that runs in the family. Poor little me. Molly had me out
walking at full speed before sunrise. Life goes on....

...Rain Today Should Be Light...

We will maintain the chance of a few showers across Alabama today thanks to
a slow moving cold front passing through the state. Rain should not be
especially heavy due to limited moisture in the lower atmosphere and the
lack of good upper air dynamics. Most places will receive rainfall of a
quarter inch or less. Showers should end this evening as colder and drier
arrives.

A COOL CHANGE: Temperatures tomorrow will be sharply colder; we will
struggle to reach the 60 degree mark with a very chilly north breeze. Clouds
could linger into the morning, but the sky should become partly sunny by
midday. By early Friday, temperatures will drop well down into the 30s. We
will forecast an average low of 34 degrees, but the normally colder places
should have a light freeze. Maybe even some 20s for the colder valleys.
During the day Friday the weather will be dry and cool with a high in the
low 60s.

THE WEEKEND: We begin the weekend with a clear and cold morning; early
Saturday we will be down in the 30s again. But, with maximum sunshine on
Saturday, the afternoon high will be somewhere between 64 and 68. Then,
there is a good chance we reach 70 degrees on Sunday afternoon. There is no
chance of rain over the weekend.

LONG RANGE: At this point it looks like our next big rain event will come on
Tuesday of next week as a strong system passes through the state. If the air
can destabilize enough, there could be some risk of strong to severe
thunderstorms. Then, the primary American global model, the GFS, hints at a
major storm system in the November 12-13 time frame that might bring another
chance of strong storms, followed by much colder air. Way too early to be
specific, but we will surely keep an eye on it.

HALLOWEEN SHOWERS: Showers late yesterday and last night dropped 0.37" at
Hamilton, 0.28" at Huntsville, 0.21" at Decatur, and 0.18" at Muscle Shoals.
Across the state line, the total at Tupelo was 0.30".

FEELS LIKE WINTER: The coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Valentine,
Montana with six degrees below zero. A number of communities across Montana
and North Dakota remained below freezing all day as bitter cold Arctic air
covered the region. Up in Alaska, our online weather watcher in Girdwood
(southeast of Anchorage), Todd Foisy, reported a high of 33 yesterday. In
Fairbanks, the forecast high for Thursday is 9 degrees.

FALL TORNADO SEASON ARRIVES: The "secondary" tornado season in Alabama
begins today; the fall season runs from the first of November through
mid-December; we suggest you take the time to review your severe weather
safety plan at home and at your office. The fall season has been the most
active season for the last 8 years in Alabama.

CHANCE OF SCATTERED LIGHT RAIN FOR TRICK OR TREATERS: We have
another cold front coming down the pike, which will eventually move
through Alabama. While there will be some showers ahead of that front
and during the frontal passage, we do not expect any widespread heavy
rain like we had with recent cold fronts moving through.

This afternoon, scattered light rain was indicated on radar over
North and Central Alabama. Because the air was so extremely dry all
the way up to about 18,000 feet, it will be a while before much of
that rain reaches the ground. For the trick or treat hours early this
evening, there could be some scattered light rain, but no downpours
and temperatures will be in the lower 60s with not much wind. Tomorrow
there will be some more showers, mostly in the afternoon and evening,
as the front gets closer. It will be turning cooler Wednesday night.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday should be dry with chilly nights and
afternoon temperatures in the 60s. It looks like October is going to
come to an end wetter than normal for many sections of the state.
Nearly 5 inches has fallen at Birmingham in what is normally our
driest month of the year.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB is in Dallas tonight to play SMU. It should be
dry, but breezy and cool with temperatures in the 50s for most of the
game. We will have the rest of the football forecast Thursday and
Friday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Showers and thunderstorms were over much of the
Western Caribbean and adjacent land areas. It is part of a broad
trough of low pressure. Rain will be heavy with this disturbance.
However, tropical development if any will be slow to occur.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: We have had our weather eyes focused toward
the north for quite some time. It is unusually cold over the far north
country for October or even early November. This includes Northern
Canada, Alaska, Greenland and the Northern USA. This morning, the
temperature dropped to a bitter 14 below zero at Gates Pass, Montana
and 13 below at Placer, Montana…warm spot yesterday was Gila Bend,
Arizona with 88.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Ah, yes, the sights and sounds to start
a new day. It is my favorite time of the day. When Little Miss Molly
was a little younger, she was up and bouncing around at 5:00 a.m. Now
she sleeps a little longer and when she first wakes up, it sure is
funny to see her stretch and moan and groan. But then, she uses her
front paws to pull and her back feet to push and she goes all the way
across the living area sliding. This is apparently her way of giving
herself a belly rub to start the day. Out at sunrise again. Lots of
interesting clouds to see and the autumn color is increasing. Again,
we were glad to hear a group of old crows doing a fly over. They are
either in town for a family reunion or just getting back from the
World Series. We did not see or hear another single dog. Molly misses
peaking through the hedgerow to see if she can see little Jo-Jo in his
backyard. His owners may be keeping him inside since he was injured by
a mean dog passing through the community. Not sure that dog has been
caught yet. Another sighting yesterday afternoon when the dog walked
across our driveway and up the middle of the street. I tried to coax
him to come back and maybe hold him on our back patio, but to no
avail. Life goes on....

...A Few Showers Possible Tonight...

Clouds will slowly increase across Alabama today, and a few widely scattered
showers could show up by late afternoon, especially over the western half of
the state, as a cold front approaches. For the little ghosts and goblins out
on the streets tonight, a shower is possible, but they should be pretty
widely spaced, and at this point we don't expect any thunder or lightning.

We will maintain the chance of scattered showers tonight and tomorrow as the
slowpoke front creeps through, but with only limited moisture and dynamics,
rainfall amounts should be light and spotty. Most communities will received
a quarter inch of rain or less. Then, drier and cooler air will roll into
the state on Thursday. A stray shower could be found early Thursday, but the
chance looks so small at this point we won't mention it on our formal
forecast.

With a partly sunny sky, the high on Thursday will be only in the mid 60s
with a cool north breeze. Then, by Friday morning, there is a good chance we
reach the upper 30s as the colder air continues to move in. Friday should
feature maximum sunshine with a high somewhere between 60 and 65.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The weekend ahead looks very nice; lots of sunshine both
Saturday and Sunday with highs generally in the 60s. Saturday morning will
be cold; some of the colder valleys will see a light freeze, and some frost
is likely in the colder spots as well. Yet another good looking Saturday for
college football games across the Deep South.

WET OCTOBER: October is normally the driest month of the year for
Birmingham; our average rainfall for October is only 3.23". This year, we
have measured 4.97" during October, and we might go over five inches if we
can get a nice shower tonight before midnight. For the year, Birmingham's
rain total is 50.93", giving us a surplus of 6.16" since January 1.

BIG COLD BLAST: Some of the coldest air so far this season is invading the
northern U.S.; yesterday's high in Great Falls, Montana was only 18 degrees,
which followed a morning low of 7. Also in Montana, the high at Lewiston was
only 15. That cold air will be spreading southward over the plains states
today.

THANKS: A big thank you for watching our special on ABC 33/40 this past
Sunday evening called "A Decade Of Alabama Weather". If you missed it, we
have posted the show on the ABC 33/40 web site. Just go to the weather
section, and then click on video and look under "video vault". You will find
plenty of old video there as well from other events over the past 10 years.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Don't forget our annual severe weather training session
is coming to the BJCC in downtown Birmingham on Saturday November 11; check
the web for details. The session is totally free, and you will get the best
SKYWARN training in the nation from our own Brian Peters, who has trained
over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years!

NOT AS COOL TONIGHT: There was some scattered light frost in some of
the North Alabama locations this morning. The temperature dropped to
34 in Black Creek, 38 in DeSoto State Park, 39 at Ft. Payne Airport,
40 in Anniston and Montgomery, 41 in Cullman, Crossville, Tuscaloosa
and Selma. It will not be as chilly tonight.

After last night's clear weather, some high thin cirrus clouds spread
over the state today (those make beautiful sunsets). A light SW wind
will set in tonight and this will keep temperatures at least 10
degrees above those of last night. Tomorrow another cold front will be
pushing down through the central part of the country. It will reach NW
Alabama Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and push through the state
by Thursday morning. We do not expect a big rain event like we have
had in the last few cold fronts, but there will be some showers
starting later tomorrow with a better chance Tuesday night and
Wednesday. It should be clearing on Thursday. Next weekend looks great
with cool early mornings, but highs in the 60s.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Mount Washington, New Hampshire is a
remarkable weather factory. Early this afternoon they had 18 degrees
with NW winds averaging 86 mph with gusts to 112. They had a wind gust
to 158 mph over the weekend due to that gigantic low pressure area in
the NE. That was their highest gust in over 10 years…some of the
colder temperature around the USA this morning included 8 below zero
at Sweet Grass, Montana, 2 below at Polebridge, Montana and 4 above at
Rogers Pass, Montana…the latter location still holds the all-time low
temperature of 7 below zero in the lower 48 states recorded in the
1950s. A friend and I visited that little weather station the next
spring after it happened wading the last two miles up the canyon in
deep snow drifts in April. I will write a story about that one day.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The nervous weather area from the Gulf of Honduras
across Cuba and the Bahamas and then into the Atlantic still cannot
get its act together. It is not expected to develop into a tropical
cyclone, but it will produce heavy rain.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Walking Little Miss Molly without a
stick again, because we believe the angry dog that threatened some
people and injured a small dog in our community is gone. No sightings
since last Friday. The city has been trying to catch the dog, but to
no avail. However, I do watch closely and I'm ready to pick up Little
Miss Molly instantly if I see the dog and then try to negotiate with
the bad guy. I am now convinced that Little Miss Molly would like for
me to play up to 25 ballgames a day with her. The more I play, the
more she wants. She has gotten so good that when I throw the ball
across the living area, she waits until it bounces off the opposite
wall and catches it on the rebound. She is too smart for me, but I
don't mind being inferior to that little girl. It amazes me how a
simple little treat can make her so ultra happy. Life goes on....

...Tomorrow An Improved Version Of Today...

A fine Sunday is in progress weather wise across Alabama. If you like
today's weather, you will most certainly enjoy tomorrow's also. In fact, I
will go ahead and upgrade the Perfect Weather Watch for tomorrow to a
Warning. Remember, a Perfect Weather Warning means that you should avail
yourself of every opportunity to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather
tomorrow with sunny skies, light winds and highs in the upper 70s. Magical.

OUR FORECAST: Perfect weather tonight for area Fall Festivals. Lows will
drop into the middle 40s. Gorgeous tomorrow. Then clouds increase tomorrow
night, becoming mostly cloudy by Tuesday morning. A cold front will
approach the area late on Tuesday, setting off a few showers and storms,
first over Northwest Alabama by afternoon and across the rest of the area
during the overnight. Initial indications are that trick or treating will
be fine. Showers hang out through early Thursday.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Still windy, snowy and rainy in parts of the
Northeast. Strong low pressure over southern Canada produced torrential
rains and high winds over New England. Power was out to hundreds of
thousands of customers in the Northeast, including nearly a quarter of a
million in the New York City area alone. Crews are working to restore power
this morning. Mountain snows are expected over the northern Rockies later
today where winter storm warnings have been posted. Much of the west of the
nation is enjoying fine weather on this late October Saturday.

ESPERANZA WILDFIRE: The deadly wildfire that has been burning since early
Thursday in Riverside County, California west of Palm Springs is about 60
percent contained this morning. The deliberately set fire has burned over
24,000 acres and killed four firefighters, making it the deadliest for
firefighters since 2001. Another firefighter was critically injured. The
good news is that the Santa Ana winds have decreased today and higher
humidities will also help bring this fire under control

IN THE TROPICS: A tropical wave south of the island of Hispaniola continues
to move west northwest. It looks a little more organized on satellite
photos and the upper winds are not very strong around the system and there
is some potential that a tropical depression could form. The disturbed
weather is expected to move westward into the southwestern Caribbean, a
favored area for development this time of year. It will not pose a threat
to the United States.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: KNBC Newsman Chuck Henry nearly lost his life as he
covered the raging California Wildfires. Waiting until the last second to
evacuate as a wall of flames bore down on him, he found that his van would
not start. He was rescued by firefighters.
