...Nice Week Continues...

Lots of uncertainty in the forecast over the next week with a difficult to predict trough cutting off into one of those bowling ball upper lows over the middle of the nation by early in the week. After a fine weekend, it will be model madness through much of the next week.

BEAUTIFUL THROUGH SUNDAY: High pressure centered over the Southeast will give us plenty of sun this afternoon and Sunday. There will be some high cloudiness streaming well overhead at times, but it will barely dim the sun. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the 70s, with lows dropping to around 40 degrees.

THE TROUGH: A big upper trough is swinging through the western states this morning. By Sunday morning, it is expected to cut off into a deepening upper low over the Four Corners region, where Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico meet. It is expected to move to around Kansas and Oklahoma by Monday and Tuesday, where it will roll around like a loose cannonball for a couple of days. Indications are that it will get bored and lift up into the Dakota and Canada by Wednesday. Another fast moving trough will affect us by the end of the week, with a bigger one around the 24th and an even bigger one around the 29th.

WHAT THIS MEANS: Partly cloudy Monday. Increasing clouds Tuesday with a slight chance of a shower. A continued shower chance on Wednesday. A little sunshine Thursday, then a good chance of rain and storms Friday. Finally, a nice weekend. Having said all that, the forecast is certainly not poured in concrete, so stay tuned.

TROPICS: After our brief flare up with Hurricane Ida, the tropical Atlantic has resumed its slumber. None of the global models predict any tropical cyclone development between now and the official end of the season, November 30th.

LEONIDS: The 2009 Leonid meteor shower will peak early on Tuesday morning, with 20-30 meteors per hour expected over North America. A new moon will help, as long as the clouds cooperate. Parts of Asia could see 200-300 meteors per hour!

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama will be in Starkville tonight to play Mississippi State. Kick off is at 6:00. Expect clear weather, around 68 at the start, but in the upper 50s in the 4th quarter. Auburn will be in Athens to play Georgia tonight for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear weather there also with
the temperature around 65 at kick off and mid 50s by the 4th quarter. UAB is in Memphis, playing right now in fine conditions.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week it was severe weather/wind damage expert Tim Marshall. Next week, Mike Smith, the CEO of Weather Data Services will be in for a chat about how meteorology has been more efficient in saving lives than cancer research and traffic safety. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 1999: The twelfth named storm of the North Atlantic Hurricane Season formed in the Caribbean on this date. Within a few hours, Tropical Storm Lenny was upgraded to a hurricane, with maximum winds of 80 mph. The hurricane was moving eastward and was threatening the island of Jamaica. ...Sundog Warning...

SUNDOG WARNING: Have you ever seen a sun dog? You probably have, and didn't know what it was. A sun dog, or parahelion, is a bright spot of colored light on either side of the sun, at the same height above the horizon as the sun. They are caused by ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds. We will have plenty of cirrus clouds spreading across the area from the west today. They will be coming from a trough over the western U.S., spilling across the ridge into Alabama. The best time to see them will be when the sun is lowering the sky this afternoon.

BEAUTIFUL DAY: The high clouds will give the sky a lot of character today, but will barely dim the sun. Look for afternoon highs to top out in the lower and middle 70s. Under fair skies tonight, lows will fall back into the 40s.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama will be in Starkville tonight to play Mississippi State. Kick off is at 6:00. Expect clear weather, around 68 at the start, but in the upper 50s in the 4th quarter. Auburn will be in Athens to play Georgia tonight for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear weather there also with the temperature around 65 at kick off and mid 50s by the 4th quarter. UAB is in Memphis for a noon kick off today. There it will be sunny with 68 at kick off and warming to about 75 during the game.

TRENDING TO DRIER: We had been looking at showers as early as Monday night, but recent model runs have been trending toward drier. In fact recent runs have trended later and later with the precipitation. Lots of uncertainty in the forecast. For now, we will say rain over western sections Wednesday night, but the best chances Friday into early Saturday. Stay tuned for forecast refinements.

STORM ALERT XTREME: If you're reading this early Saturday, you still have time to get dressed and get to the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex for our annual storm spotter training. Conducted by long time trainer Brian Peters, the learning is unparalleled in severe weather recognition. You will be out by 2:30, and get free admission to the auto show!

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama will be in Starkville tonight to play Mississippi State. Kick off is at 6:00. Expect clear weather, around 68 at the start, but in the upper 50s in the 4th quarter. UAB is in Memphis for a noon kick off today. There it will be sunny with 68 at kick off and warming to about 75 during the game.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tim Marshall was the guest WeatherBrain on this week's show. The severe weather and wind damage expert answered questions on the EF scale, tornadoes and mobile homes, tornadoes and cars and a myriad of other topics. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: Southern Airways flight 932 crashed in rain and fog on approach to the Huntington, WV. Seventy five people were killed including the Marshall University football team. On November 14, 1970, all 75 people about a charter jet carrying the Marshall Thundering Herd football team were killed when the DC-9 crashed into a rain and fog shrouded hillside near Huntington, West Virginia. The worst sports related disaster in U.S. history was recently featured in the movie "We Are Marshall." Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...More Sunshine...

UTOPIA AUTUMN WEATHER CONTINUES: Again today November is being very gracious to Alabama. If you look real close, you can see some very thin wispy clouds way up high. Those are around 30,000 feet above the ground and the temperature is bitter cold at that level, below zero with NW winds over 50 mph. None of that is abnormal, but those type cirrus clouds present brilliant sunsets.

NOW BACK TO EARTH: We all live at ground level and down here where we exist the weather will still be hard to beat, at least through Monday. In fact, for Saturday and Sunday some more sunny dry weather with cool nights, but milder afternoons. We will see some clouds on Monday, but even then more sun than clouds. High temperatures for the next three days will be in the mid 70s and lows in the 40s.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Another front will move west to east through Alabama on Tuesday as a low-pressure area passes to our NW. It should set off a few showers and bring us some cooler temperatures. Daytime highs will back off to the upper 60s. The probability of the rain on Tuesday is not signed, sealed and delivered. Models are arguing over the situation and one of our most trusted models keeps us without rain into the middle of next week.

THE MORNING CHILL: It was in the 30s over much of North and Central Alabama this morning. Several places in NE Alabama had lows around 33. It was 34 in Pinson and Cullman, 37 in Huntsville and 39 in Birmingham, Anniston and Tuscaloosa.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still a number of high school play off games scheduled for tonight. It would be difficult to improve on the game-time weather. Generally clear and dry for all stadiums with little or no wind. Temperatures in the 60s at kick off, falling into the 50s for the second half and some upper 40s by the fourth quarter. Lots of college games around the region Saturday. In Alabama, Tennessee Tech will be at Jacksonville State. Jackson State will be at Alabama A&M and Concordia at Stillman. Most of the games have a midday or early afternoon kick off. Look for low to mid 70s during the game, but 60s by the fourth quarter. Night games include Auburn at Georgia with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear weather, in the 60s, dropping into the 50s and even into the 40s by the fourth quarter. Alabama travels west to Starkville to play Mississippi State. They are expecting the biggest crowd ever for a football game with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Clear with temperatures in the 60s at the beginning, dropping into the 50s and eventually into the upper 40s by the fourth quarter.

STORM ALERT XTREME: If you get to the BJCC by 9:00, you should get a good seat. The program is from 9:30 to 2:30 tomorrow. Good training for storm spotters and if you want to be a 33/40 Skywatcher. Absolutely no charge and if you attend that, you also get free admittance to the Alabama International Auto Show.

PESKY IDA: She no longer has a name but she played havoc along the Atlantic Coast yesterday and last night. The center of what was once Ida is now moving SE away from the coast. Even so, a weather buoy at Nantucket was reporting 20-foot waves this morning with 15-foot swells. The Long Island buoy had 22-foot waves. The storm produced 75 mph wind gusts at Oceana, Virginia and 74 mph at Norfolk. Almost 11 inches of rain at Langley AFB.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is a creature of habit. She has a set routine and she does not like for it to be interrupted. We had the carpet cleaners here this morning and it completely disrupted her. She was nervous. She kept pacing. We had her in the weather office with us to keep her out of the way. She demanded to sit on my desk. She walked across my keyboard 5 times. She sat on my worksheet with her little rear end and tail covering the whole thing. Sure am glad she made me go all the way on the early morning walk. I have never seen it prettier. Life goes on.

A MILD NOVEMBER WEEKEND AHEAD: While mornings will remain cool,
afternoons over the weekend will be rather mild for the middle of
November, with highs up in the mid 70s, around ten degrees above
average values for this time of the year. The air will remain very
dry, and the sky will be mostly sunny through Sunday with just a few
passing high cirrus clouds from time to time.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Simply superb for tonight's high school playoff
games. A clear sky, with temperatures around 64 at kickoff, falling
through the 50s during the games. Some stadiums could reach the 40s by
the fourth quarter. In college games, Alabama will be in Starkville
tomorrow night to play Mississippi State. Kick off is at 6:00. Clear
weather, around 68, but in the upper 50s in the 4th quarter. Auburn
will be in Athens to play Georgia Saturday night with a 6:00 p.m. kick
off. Clear weather there also with 65 at kick off and mid 50s by the
4th quarter. UAB is in Memphis for a noon kick off Saturday. Sunny
with 68 at kick off and warming to about 75 during the game. No threat
of rain for any game across Alabama or the Deep South.

OUR NEXT RAIN: It now looks like Monday will stay dry and mild, but we
will bring back a chance of showers on Tuesday and Wednesday of next
week. The primary dynamics will remain northwest of Alabama, and for
now we are not expecting any strong storms, and rain should be on the
light side, generally 1/2 inch or less. Thursday and Friday look
mostly dry.

BIG ANNIVERSARY: Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of the November 15,
1989 F4 tornado in Huntsville that killed 21 people and injured 463
others. The tornado touched down on a Wednesday afternoon around 4:30
as many people were driving home; this was before Doppler Radar was
operational, and there was no warning when the tornado initially
touched down. The tornado remained on the ground for 16 miles across
Madison County, with the most extensive damage across the southern
part of the city of Huntsville in the vicinity of Memorial Parkway and
Whitesburg Drive. It was red letter day in Alabama weather history.

STORM ALERT XTREME IS TOMORROW! Want to be trained as a storm spotter?
Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event,
Storm Alert Xtreme, is tomorrow at the BJCC during the annual
Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best
SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained
over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We encourage all of
our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get
enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 2:30. And,
everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the
Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no
need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat.
We had a packed house last year.

...The Saga of Ida...

THE SPARKLE OF AUTUMN: It is another one of those days where I doubt
if anyone complains about the weather. If they do, they must be a semi-
grouch. It does not get much better than this and the visibility does
not get much greater than it is today. The sky is as blue as it can
get and it will stay that way possibly all the way through Sunday. We
do expect some clouds to show up on Monday and there could be a few
showers by Monday night. Latest study of the models indicates that the
rain could hold off until Tuesday. However, a front is expected to be
moving across Louisiana and Mississippi during the day Monday and that
could set off a few showers, at least by Monday night.

THE OLE THERMOMETER: It will have a easy time of it in the next
several days hanging out between 70 and 75 each afternoon, but cooling
to the 40s every night. The exception is tonight when we are calling
for an average low of 39 across Central Alabama. Surely there will be
a few spots with scattered frost Friday morning and look for some low
temperatures in the NE Alabama valleys between about 33 and 37. Here
in Jefferson County, Pinson reported a low of 36 this morning. Cullman
had 39.

THE SAGA OF IDA: Who would have thought over a week ago when she was
only a low-pressure area hugging the west coast of Central America
that she would last this long and cause so many problems. She brought
a state-wide drenching to Alabama including almost 10 inches at
Opelika. Today she is a real headache along the Mid-Atlantic Coast.
She is spreading her problems north. Actually, she is no longer known
as Ida and is no longer tropical in nature. The coast of North
Carolina and Virginia is getting by huge waves, extremely heavy rain
and some winds over 50 mph. all of that is spreading northward and a
major flood event is unfolding.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Some more high school play off games Friday night.
You could not custom order better weather. It will be clear.
Temperatures close to 60 at kick off and dropping to around 48 or 50
by the final whistle. In college games, Alabama will be in Starkville
Saturday night to play Mississippi State.

THE BIRMINGHAM HISTORIC RAIN STORY: Ida brought 4.32 inches at the
airport, 4.56 inches in NE Trussville and 5.51 inches at Peppertree in
extreme NE Trussville. The airport total is now an amazing 64.55 inches
—an almost unheard of surplus of 18.06.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Do not forget to show up at the BJCC at 9:30
Saturday morning for a great program concerning storm spotting and
other weather subjects. Much can be learned and it is all over at 2:30
and it does not cost you a cent.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has a personality that
absolutely demands a host of friends. She has a desire to be friends
of everybody she sees. Yesterday she and I were walking north along
the track. In the distance, she could see Sue Giovanni, who is one of
her friends. She led me northward as fast as my little legs could go
for nearly 200 yards. I finally got her stopped and headed back south.
Only then did she calm down and do her business. This morning a flock
of seven birds came roaring out of the hedgerow just as she paused to
do her business. She cancelled that and ran. Life is always
interesting with that little girl and life goes on.

...Dry Through The Weekend...

BLUE SKY AND SUNSHINE: Dry air covers all of Alabama this morning, and
it will set the stage for excellent autumn weather today. With maximum
available sunshine, we expect to be in the mid 60s this afternoon with
a rather gusty north wind, coming around the back side of a strong
storm system over the Atlantic coast, formerly known as Tropical Storm
Ida. Tomorrow will be another sunny day with a high in the low 70s
along with a good supply of sunshine.

THE WEEKEND: This weekend's weather will be very similar to what we
enjoyed this past Saturday and Sunday. Mostly sunny mild days with
highs up in the mid 70s, and clear cool nights, with early morning
lows in the 40s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Perfect weather for high school playoff games
tomorrow night; a clear sky with temperatures around 60 at kickoff,
dropping through the 50s during the games, perhaps reaching the upper
40s by the 4th quarter in some stadiums. Alabama is on the road
Saturday night; they play the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 6:00; the
sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature around 68 degrees,
falling into the upper 50s by the final whistle. Auburn plays at
Georgia Saturday evening in Athens (6:00 p.m. kickoff); the sky will
be clear with 65 degrees at kickoff, and low to mid 50s by the fourth
quarter. UAB is also on the road; they play at Memphis (12:00 noon
kickoff)… no weather problems there with a sunny sky and 68 degrees
at kickoff, rising into the low to mid 70s during the game.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like showers will return to Alabama Monday afternoon,
Monday night, and into Tuesday morning as a rather strong short wave
moves through. A few thunderstorms could be involved, but for now it
looks like instability values won't be sufficient for a major severe
weather problem. Then, drier air returns by Tuesday and Wednesday.

STORM ALERT XTREME THIS SATURDAY: Want to be trained as a storm
spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual
training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on this Saturday
November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International
Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the
nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm
spotters over the years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to
attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will
begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm
Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto
Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show
up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last
year.

...Nice Weather Returns...

OVERDOSED ON RAIN: I have been involved in weather seemingly since
about the time Noah built his ark and I cannot remember an autumn that
gave us this much rain. Both September and October were wet. We got a
week-long break in early November, but it seemed like Ida was
determined to break up our clear weather party. She did a masterful
job. I love a rainy day, but yesterday was almost too much with the
wind and the rain being consistent all day.

Almost all of Alabama got a soaking. We have posted a long list of
rain amounts on the 33/40 Weather BLOG, but we list a few typical
amounts here for the last entire storm:

4.75 Odenville
5.11 Inverness
5.00 Homewood
5.54 Moody
4.58 Cottondale (Year-to-Date 69.20)
4.40 Gadsden
6.05 Demopolis
4.02 Scrougeout (Year-to-Date 74.09)

NOW WHAT: I guess Mother Nature looks out for us, because we are now
headed for another good stretch of dry weather with pleasant daytime
temperatures and cool nights. We think we will be rain free through
Sunday, although one of our beloved weather models did put a little
rain in for later Sunday. Afternoon will be comfortable and lows at
night in the low to mid 40s.

MISS IDA NOW: Her remnants were centered near Savannah this afternoon
and she is still causing plenty of trouble along the South Atlantic
coast. She gave Atlanta some record 24-hour rain amounts and that city
has some more flash flooding. She dumped 6.80 inches of rain on
Forsyth and almost 6 inches on Douglasville. By late Thursday and
early Friday, the low-pressure system that was once Ida will be near
the North Carolina Outer Banks.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: James will have a detailed football forecast
starting with our Thursday morning edition, but generally speaking, it
looks great for the Friday night play off games and the in state
college games on Saturday. You never know whom you are going to meet.
Last Saturday when my son Steve treated me to a day at Bryant-Denny
Stadium, he was able to find spare tickets from a fellow fireman in
the Jasper Fire Department. His name is Steve Lockheart. He remembered
well the super outbreak of tornadoes that heavily damaged downtown
Jasper in April 1974. In fact, he is now assigned to Station 1 in
downtown Jasper that was virtually destroyed in the earlier tornado.
He was only 9 years old at the time of the tornado. He reads our
material every day and is very interested in weather.

STORM ALERT XTREME: It is almost time. It starts at 9:30 Saturday
morning at the BJCC and will be over by 2:30. A great source of
training for storm spotters and a review even if you have been
spotting a long time. Not sure I will be there, but I always learn
something new from Brian Peters.

ROAMING: 94 at East Mesa, Arizona was the hottest yesterday…cold
spots this morning, 11 at Spincich Lake, Michigan and 32 below in
Alaska at Arctic Village and Chandalar Lake…the morning national snow
survey shows less than 3% of the lower 48 with a snow cover…a month
ago today it was almost 16%…with the heavy rain in Atlanta in the last
24 hours, their annual total has swelled to 58.63 inches—a surplus of
15 inches. The Birmingham surplus now stands at an amazing 18.22 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: An all-day rain like yesterday sure does
disrupt Little Miss Molly and her bathroom habits. She does not like
the rain. We go out anyway. Normally she would drag me halfway around
the walking track before she did anything. Yesterday she did it
instantly and then ran back to the door wanting in and expecting a
treat. Life goes on.

...Another Nice Stretch of Dry Weather...

DRIER DAYS: After a total statewide soaking yesterday, improving
weather headlines our forecast today as drier air works into our
state. West Alabama will be in sunshine all day, and we are
forecasting a clearing sky for the eastern half of the state. The
clouds could be slow in leaving counties near Georgia border, but most
East Alabama communities should be in sunshine by mid-afternoon.

We are looking at delightful weather tomorrow and through the weekend,
with mostly sunny comfortable days and clear chilly nights. Highs will
be in the mid 60s tomorrow, close to 70 Friday, followed by low to mid
70s over the weekend. Morning lows will remain generally in the 40s.
Looks like another great weekend for high school football playoff
games and the college games across the Deep South on Saturday. A few
clouds will show up by Sunday afternoon, but the day will remain dry.

OUR NEXT RAIN: We will bring in a chance of showers Sunday night and
Monday; not much confidence in the amount of rain we see, or the
timing since model output has been very inconsistent. Cooler and drier
air will return by Tuesday and Wednesday.

BIG TIME RAIN TOTALS: Rain totals across Alabama yesterday included
6.05" at Demopolis, 5.54" at Moody, 5.11" at Inverness, 5.00"
at Homewood, 4.75" at Weaver, 4.75" at Odenville, 4.61" at
Clanton, 4.41" at Moundville, 4.35" at Concord/Hueytown, 4.30" at
Clay, 4.27" at Greystone Farms, 3.97" at Scrougeout (Northeast
Etowah County), 3.96" at Gardendale, 3.51" at Coker, 1.69" at
Jasper, and 1.24" at Millport.

Despite all the rain, there was no major flooding since the ground was
able to able to handle it thanks to the 8 day dry spell. Flood
warnings were issued for the Cahaba and the Tallapoosa Rivers last
night, where mostly minor flooding is expected today.
The rain, of course, was all due to the remnant circulation of former
Tropical Storm Ida, which is now a broad, non-tropical low over the
Northeast Gulf of Mexico. This low will continue moving away from
Alabama during the next 24 hours.

RAIN SCORECARD: Yesterday's rainfall at the Birmingham Airport stood
at 3.59 inches, bringing our annual total to 64.14 inches. This makes
2009 the 17th wettest year in Magic City history. The rain surplus for
the year is now over 17 inches.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We
encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply
cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30.
And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to
the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and
no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good
seat. We had a packed house last year.

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast - Reminder!

People often ask how they can become one of our Skywatchers; my response is that you have to love weather, have a computer and a camera, and be willing to be trained. We do that training only once a year, and this year's Storm Alert Xtreme is less than one month away. We will be at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center on this Saturday, November 14; we will begin at 9:30, and wrap up by 2:30. There is no admission charge, and everybody that comes for training gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show, which is going on at the same venue.

Our own Brian Peters, long time Warning-Coordination Meteorologist for the Birmingham National Weather Service office, will do the training. The morning session will be the basic class, followed by the advanced class after lunch. I will be there as well, and we encourage all existing Skywatchers to attend for their annual refresher course. I have been a professional meteorologist for over 30 years, and I always learn something new when Brian teaches. He really does a wonderful job.

In addition to those who want to join our team of Skywatchers, this is also a wonderful training opportunity for first responders, utility workers, EMA (emergency management agency) staff members, and students interested in meteorology. Everybody who attends will gain admission into our Skywatcher IM chat session, meaning we see your reports in real time during active and severe weather events. We currently have over 500 active Skywatchers on our roster, and are looking for more. We are especially interested in new Skywatchers in rural areas of Alabama where severe weather reports are hard to find. Radar is a wonderful tool, but the beam gets higher off the ground as it gets farther away from the radar site, and trained eyes are crucial to accurate warnings.

We have had wonderful crowds in recent years, and we expect a bigger group this year. So, if you are a Skywatcher now, or want to be one, we will see you on Saturday, November 14 at the BJCC at 9:30. No need to register, just show up. Look for the signs that will be placed around the site for directions!

...The Excitement Winding...

A GENUINE BONA FIDE SOAKING: Her name was Ida. Earlier today she lost
her license and privilege to be a tropical hurricane or a tropical
storm. She was demoted to tropical depression stage and she will
continue to slowly lose her tropical characteristics.

She surely is not giving up easily, even though the leftover
circulation was down in South Alabama. She was pumping plenty of
moisture northward and rain was still widespread over most of the
north half of Alabama this afternoon. The exception was in the NW
counties where some drier air was being pulled into the circulation.

Almost every part of the state received a good rain. So much so, that
some flooding problems developed. By tomorrow, we will have a better
handle on the storm total, but here are a few samples as of noon today:

2.82 Birmingham Airport
1.91 Roebuck
3.37 Shelby County Airport
3.61 Mobile
2.37 Montgomery
2.44 Tuscaloosa
4.00 Tri-County (where Jefferson, St. Clair and Blount join)
2.87 Trussville (Peppertree)

NOW WHAT: The rain will persist into the evening, but gradually end
overnight. Clouds will break up Wednesday leaving mostly sunshine for
Veterans Day. It will be breezy and cool with north winds 12-22 mph.
From Thursday through Saturday, it will be mostly sunshine with cool
nights, but milder afternoons.

ROAMING: The warmest in the USA yesterday was 87 at Yuma and East
Mesa, Arizona…coldest this morning included 11 at Pinedale, Wyoming
and 27 below zero at Arctic Village, Alaska…the latest snow survey
shows only 3% of the lower 48 with snow on the ground. That compared
to over 13% one month ago.

DAMAGE FROM IDA: There is an old country and western song named, Ida
Red. That is how I tried to remember this hurricane. There was never a
mass evacuation from the Gulf Coast, even though some news reports had
said there would be. In one shelter on the Alabama coast, there were
only 11 people. This hurricane received good coverage and good
forecasting. We do not know how much property damage has been done. It
appears to not be major. A lot of it may be due to storm surge and
flash flooding.

STORM ALERT XTREME: It will be this Saturday starting at 9:30 at the
BJCC. No cost whatsoever and you will also have free admission to the
Alabama National Auto Show. It is an excellent way to get spotter
training. An added advantage this time—no time conflict with the
Alabama or Auburn football games. They are both evening games.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is so alert that even
the slightest noise will make her go into full alert status in about 2
seconds. Last night the majority owner accidentally knocked her lamp
off the bedside table and within seconds Molly was patrolling the
entire house. It makes us feel safe. I really believe she can hear
another dog barking several blocks away. She also can ease our
tensions in 10 seconds. Life goes on.

...Breezy and Wet...

BACK TO RAIN: Most of Alabama enjoyed 8 consecutive days without a
drop of rain, so we all knew it had to end at some point. This is
November, after all, a month that often features wet and stormy
weather. Today's rain is all thanks to a late season tropical system
named Ida. The system peaked over the weekend as a hurricane over the
warm water of the Yucatan Channel, but it steadily weakened yesterday
over the cooler water of the northern Gulf. It continues to make the
transformation from a tropical system, to a cold core system that you
often see on weather maps during the colder months. Still, it will
bring lots of rain to our state today.

HOW MUCH RAIN? The axis of heaviest rain should run in the broad area
from Mobile to Anniston; in this region rain amounts of 2 to 4 inches
are possible, and some localized flooding problems are possible. Some
of the communities in this zone include Montgomery, Rockford, Alex
City, Ashland, and Lineville. To the west, amounts will be much
lighter. Rain potential for the Birmingham metro is for 1 to 2 inches,
with amounts under one inch to the northwest. In fact, parts of
Northwest Alabama most likely won't get much rain at all.

WHAT ABOUT WIND? Winds will be out of the east today, with low
pressure to the south and high pressure to the north. The wind should
average 12-22 mph today, with higher gusts on the ridges. Winds will
be a little stronger over South Alabama, but even there significant
damage is not expected; just a few scattered power outages.

REST OF THE WEEK: The remnants of Ida will turn to the east, and then
southeast, during the next 24 hours, and dry air will move back into
Alabama tomorrow as the sky becomes mostly sunny on Veteran's Day
with a high in the mid to upper 60s. Thursday and Friday will be
pleasant as will with a good supply of sunshine both days and a high
between 67 and 70.

WEEKEND PEEK: We are forecasting another delightful weekend for our
state with ample sunshine, and a high in the low 70s both Saturday and
Sunday. Looks like another great weekend for both high school and
college football.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on THIS Saturday November 14 at the BJCC
during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be
trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian
Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the
years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year;
you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be
out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free
admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no
admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there
early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Tropical Problems...

BIG RAIN EVENT: Why did our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, wait until
the last minute to send us a tropical storm or hurricane? We were
having such a nice quiet season. But at least Ida is easy to spell and
pronounce. Time is running out. The season ends November 30, but it is
not against the law to have one out of season. The next name on the
list is Joaquin and then three easy ones to pronounce: Kate, Larry and
Mindy. I dare say you will not see those last three.

HURRICANE IDA: She grew into a hurricane as she moved further north
into the Southern Gulf of Mexico. We knew she
had a major obstacle in her path over the Central and North Gulf of
Mexico—namely much cooler water temperatures. When she got into that
area, she was downgraded to a tropical storm. The center of
circulation was easily visible on radar this afternoon over the North
Gulf of Mexico. Landfall is expected by around daybreak somewhere
along the North Gulf coast, probably in Mobile or Baldwin County or
maybe extreme NW Florida. Strong winds can be expected all along the
coast and even inland all the way into North/Central Alabama. After
making landfall, a sharp turn to the right is expected and by daybreak
Wednesday, the remnants should be near Tallahassee. Sustained winds
this afternoon were down to about 70 mph.

CENTRAL ALABAMA IMPACT: The further east you go, the heavier the
final rain total from Ida. But even in the Birmingham metro area we
could easily get around three inches. It will be heavier east and SE
of the city and much heavier down south. Light rain was already
spreading into the Birmingham area early this afternoon. NE winds will
reach 15 to 30 mph at times Tuesday. We can never totally rule out an
isolated weak tornado in a land-falling tropical system.

BEYOND MISS IDA: For the all-important Veterans Day on Wednesday, we
look for mostly sunny, breezy and cool weather. After that, sunny
weather should last all the way into the weekend with afternoon highs
mostly in the upper 60s.

ROAMING: After Ida turns eastward, she will evolve into a low-
pressure area along the Georgia and South Carolina coast and bring a
very windy and wet time to the lower and mid-Atlantic coast…the
warmest temperature in the good old USA Sunday was 87 at Naples,
Florida…lows this morning included 8 above zero at Pinedale and Big
Piney, Wyoming and also in Yellowstone National Park…the coldest in
Alaska was 26 below zero at Fort Yukon. That is not too far away from
Chicken, Alaska where it has been as cold as 63 below last winter. We
will watch that little hamlet closely. It has an interesting history…I
sure did enjoy an all-day outing Saturday courtesy of my son Steve. It
included the Alabama/LSU game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Would you
believe that is the first college football game I have seen since the
first game that Mike Dubose coached. I still have never seen a college
basketball game. Maybe I need to get out more.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When I got home about 10:00 Saturday
night, Little Miss Molly had not seen me for about 15 hours. She was
so happy she almost tackled me and then for hours she would not let me
out of her sight. I was too exhausted to play ball with her, but I did
anyway. She was absolutely elated. Life goes on.

...Ida To Bring Wind/Rain To Alabama...

Sunday was a perfect weather day across Central Alabama, with lots of
sunshine and warm temperatures. It felt more like late April than
November. High clouds began to stream across the area during the late
afternoon, signs of changes ahead.

HURRICANE IDA: Those changes are coming in the form of a late season
hurricane and upper trough approaching from the west. Category two
Hurricane Ida is some 375 miles south of Mobile this morning. Top
winds are around 100 mph. The storm is moving northward at 16 mph.
Tropical storm force winds extend 150 miles to the north of the
center, with 58 mph winds extending 75 miles north and hurricane force
winds out about 30 miles to the east and 20 miles to the west of the
center. You get the idea that strong winds will affect a wide area.
Remember that hurricanes and tropical storms are not a single point.
Ida will be in the process of becoming extratropical over the next 24
hours, and that could happen before landfall, but winds, rain and
surge will still be a problem for coastal and some inland areas.

COASTAL IMPACTS: Tropical storm winds will reach southeastern
Louisiana by mid-afternoon and the Alabama coast by 6 p.m. the strong
tropical storm force winds will reach Gulf Shores and Orange Beach
just after midnight. By then Ida, will be turning to the northeast.
Landfall of the center should come at late morning near or just east
of Pensacola. The counterclockwise flow around the storm and a tight
pressure gradient has produced an extended period of wind over the
northern Gulf. This will result in a wide area of elevated storm
tides in the 3-5 foot range with isolated 7 foot tides potentially in
Plaquemines Parish in Louisiana or possibly in any bays just east of
landfall point, like Mobile or Escambia. 4-5 inches of rain will fall
along the coast and there could be tornadoes east and northeast of the
storm center.

EFFECTS ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA: Ida is expected to turn to the east
and weaken rapidly after reaching the coast. This means that the
worst weather will come tonight and Tuesday morning across Central
Alabama in the pre-storm environment. Rain will spread northeastward
during the day and could be heavy area Central Alabama tonight.
Rainfall amounts should be in the 2-4 inch range before ending during
the day Tuesday. Flooding is a possibility, but the recent drier
conditions will help. Winds will be fresh today, and increase to
15-25 mph in the I-20 corridor tonight, gusting to over 35 mph at
times. To the south, winds will be a little higher across South
Central Alabama, as one might expect.

VETERANS DAY AND BEYOND: Northerly winds on the back side of post-
Hurricane Ida will keep us in a dry flow from Wednesday through much
of Friday, which means fine conditions for the Veterans Day parade and
nice weather for Thursday and Friday. Moisture will start to return
for the weekend, but we may stay dry through much of Saturday and
Sunday.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, wind engineer and severe weather expert Tim
Marshall will join the panel. I am sure Ida will figure in the
conversation as well. Follow our tweets about the show: we are
@weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A tremendous storm system (966 mb – the
intensity of a Category 2 Hurricane) moved across the Plains states on
the 9th and 10th, producing record low barometric pressure readings
across parts of Iowa (28.54 inches) and Minnesota (28.43 inches). The
storm, one of the strongest on record in the Midwest, was reminiscent
of the storm that caused the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975.
The trailing cold front across the south central states produced a
late night F3 tornado that struck parts of Columbia MO about at 1:58
a.m on the 9th. Miraculously, no one was killed, but 16 were injured
and damage totaled $6 million.

...Ida Eyes Gulf Coast...

HURRICANE WATCH ON THE GULF COAST: Hurricane Ida is moving through
the Yucatan Channel this morning, moving a little further westward and
faster than earlier. There is a chance that is could bring hurricane
force winds to the Gulf Coast Monday night an Tuesday, so the NHC has
issued a Hurricane Watch from Grand Isle LA to Mexico Beach, FL.

TRACK/INTENSITY OF IDA: Ida will gradually turn north and north
northeast through Monday. By Monday morning, it will be 350 miles
south of Mobile, moving northward at 18 mph. It will likely still be
a hurricane then with top winds of 100 mph. Tropical storm force
winds will reach SE Louisiana by noon with the storm 250 miles south
of Mobile. At 6 p.m., tropical storm force winds will be felt on the
Alabama coast with the storm 175 miles south of Mobile, starting to
turn to the northeast. It could still be a hurricane. Hurricane
force winds could reach the Alabama coast before sunrise Tuesday as
the center comes within 50 miles of southern Baldwin County. Ida
should turn eastward as it loses tropical characteristics during the
day Tuesday, but not before potentially bringing hurricane force winds
to the Northwest Florida Coast as far east as Seaside.

INLAND WIND: Tropical storm force winds may extend as far north as
Selma and Montgomery Tuesday morning,
spreading eastward to as far north as Lafayette Tuesday afternoon.
There could be quite a few power outages over South Central Alabama.
North of this and south of I-59, winds will be on the increase Monday
and Monday night, peaking at 20-35 mph. Scattered power outages are
possible in this area.

INLAND RAIN: Ida will spread heavy rain over Alabama from the
Southwest beginning during the day Monday. Heavy rain will be likely
over Central Alabama Monday night into early Tuesday. 3-4 inches of
rain is expected south of I-20 and north of I-65/85, with amounts
tapering off to the north and south.

OUR FORECAST CONDENSED: In a nutshell, Central Alabama will see
increasing clouds tonight; breezy and mostly cloudy conditions on
Monday with highs in the lower 70s; increasing gusty winds (15-25 mph)
and rain Monday night. Tuesday will be windy and wet, with winds
25-35 mph and gusty. Rain will end from the west starting by
afternoon and winds will diminish Tuesday evening. High pressure will
build in setting the stage for a beautiful Veterans Day and parade.
Nice weather Thursday and Friday. Rain chances return Saturday.

WEATHERBRAINS: Great show last week with Dr. Chuck Doswell, famed
severe weather researcher. This week, it's Tim Marshall, another top
severe weather and wind engineering expert. Listen to the show at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: All time state 24 hour rainfall records were
set in Oregon, Washington and Idaho as a huge Pacific storm system
sent rivers raging out of their banks. The 15.20 inches at June Lake,
Washington easily surpassed the old record of 14.26 inches set at
Mount Mitchell in November 1986. The 14.30 at Lee Camp, Oregon
smashed the old state record of 11.65 inches set in 1996. 9.40 inches
fell at Bear Mountain in Idaho to establish a new all time state 24
hour rainfall record.

...Ida To Bring Wind/Rain To Alabama...

The Weather Company has issued a Perfect Weather Warning for today for
residents of Central Alabama. A Perfect Weather Warning is issued
when lots of sunshine, light winds and temperatures in the middle 70s
combine to produce a perfect outdoorsy kind of day. You will not find
a much more perfect kind of November day in Alabama. Get out and
enjoy it!

WHERE'S IDA? Ida has been feasting on the warm waters of the western
Caribbean since emerging off the Nicaraguan coast Friday night. The
system is undergoing some fairly decent southwesterly shear, and that
has kept it from going crazy and intensifying rapidly. It was able to
muster enough convection last evening to become a category one
hurricane. Ida will move through the Yucatan Channel, which separates
the Yucatan from Cuba. As Ida emerges into the Gulf of Mexico later
today, it will encounter increasing shear and cooler water and begin
to weaken. It will move to a point some 375 miles south of Mobile by
Monday morning. It should begin to entrain cooler and drier air as it
makes its northward trek and should lose tropical characteristics.

But it will still be a fairly strong extratropical or post-tropical
storm as it moves on toward the Central Gulf Coast. It will pull to
within about 100 miles of Orange Beach before making an abrupt
easterly turn and weakening on Tuesday. Tropical storm force winds
are possible along the coast of Alabama and Northwest Florida Monday
afternoon through Tuesday morning. There will also be some minor
coastal flooding and heavy surf.

OUR WEATHER: Fair skies tonight with lows in the 50s, but increasing
clouds on Monday ahead of the Gulf mess. Winds will begin to freshen
out of the east, and there could be a shower by afternoon. Rain will
become likely Monday night, and it will become breezy, if not
downright windy. Rainfall amounts could be in the 3-4 inch range in a
stripe across Central Alabama roughly bounded by I-20 on the north and
I-65/85 on the south. Amounts should taper to the north and south of
this maximum. As the low shifts eastward on Tuesday, rain will end
from the west by afternoon and our winds will diminish. High
pressure will build in by Wednesday, with some cooler and drier air,
giving us a nice stretch of weather through Friday. Moisture will
begin to increase again by late Friday, with a chance of showers
returning over the weekend.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's the podcast that's all about weather. Spend
an entertaining hour each week with some of the big hitters in
weather. Last week, legendary severe weather researcher Chuck Doswell
joined the panel for a hilarious and poignant set of quotes. This
week, it is renowned wind engineer and storm chaser Tim Marshall.

ONE YEAR AGO: Category Three Hurricane Paloma made landfall on the
Cuban coast south of Camaguey. Steering currents collapsed and the
hurricane rapidly weakened and dissipated before it was able to depart
Cuba. Prior to reaching Cuba, Paloma caused significant damage in the
Caymans. An unprecedented four hurricanes made landfall in Cuba
during the year. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com
