...Ida To Bring Wind/Rain To Alabama...

The Weather Company has issued a Perfect Weather Warning for today for
residents of Central Alabama. A Perfect Weather Warning is issued
when lots of sunshine, light winds and temperatures in the middle 70s
combine to produce a perfect outdoorsy kind of day. You will not find
a much more perfect kind of November day in Alabama. Get out and
enjoy it!

WHERE'S IDA? Ida has been feasting on the warm waters of the western
Caribbean since emerging off the Nicaraguan coast Friday night. The
system is undergoing some fairly decent southwesterly shear, and that
has kept it from going crazy and intensifying rapidly. It was able to
muster enough convection last evening to become a category one
hurricane. Ida will move through the Yucatan Channel, which separates
the Yucatan from Cuba. As Ida emerges into the Gulf of Mexico later
today, it will encounter increasing shear and cooler water and begin
to weaken. It will move to a point some 375 miles south of Mobile by
Monday morning. It should begin to entrain cooler and drier air as it
makes its northward trek and should lose tropical characteristics.

But it will still be a fairly strong extratropical or post-tropical
storm as it moves on toward the Central Gulf Coast. It will pull to
within about 100 miles of Orange Beach before making an abrupt
easterly turn and weakening on Tuesday. Tropical storm force winds
are possible along the coast of Alabama and Northwest Florida Monday
afternoon through Tuesday morning. There will also be some minor
coastal flooding and heavy surf.

OUR WEATHER: Fair skies tonight with lows in the 50s, but increasing
clouds on Monday ahead of the Gulf mess. Winds will begin to freshen
out of the east, and there could be a shower by afternoon. Rain will
become likely Monday night, and it will become breezy, if not
downright windy. Rainfall amounts could be in the 3-4 inch range in a
stripe across Central Alabama roughly bounded by I-20 on the north and
I-65/85 on the south. Amounts should taper to the north and south of
this maximum. As the low shifts eastward on Tuesday, rain will end
from the west by afternoon and our winds will diminish. High
pressure will build in by Wednesday, with some cooler and drier air,
giving us a nice stretch of weather through Friday. Moisture will
begin to increase again by late Friday, with a chance of showers
returning over the weekend.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's the podcast that's all about weather. Spend
an entertaining hour each week with some of the big hitters in
weather. Last week, legendary severe weather researcher Chuck Doswell
joined the panel for a hilarious and poignant set of quotes. This
week, it is renowned wind engineer and storm chaser Tim Marshall.

ONE YEAR AGO: Category Three Hurricane Paloma made landfall on the
Cuban coast south of Camaguey. Steering currents collapsed and the
hurricane rapidly weakened and dissipated before it was able to depart
Cuba. Prior to reaching Cuba, Paloma caused significant damage in the
Caymans. An unprecedented four hurricanes made landfall in Cuba
during the year. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com
