...Nice Weather To Continue...

Trick or treaters enjoyed nearly perfect weather across Central
Alabama last night. Halloween on a Friday night. A whole weekend to
enjoy all those treats. Those were good times when we were kids. And
the good weather will continue for at least the next five day. Oh.
Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour before going to bed as we
fall back out of Daylight Saving Time.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Our recent run of fine weather will continue through
the weekend. That interesting little upper disturbance that we saw
swinging out of Oklahoma yesterday will spin up into an upper low over
the northern Gulf. It might spread some clouds back into Alabama by
Tuesday, but for now mostly clear skies will prevail through
tomorrow. Highs on Sunday will again be in the middle 70s after a
refreshing start in the lower 40s Sunday morning.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The big storm system out west will bring rain,
storms, snow and wind to the West Coast today. 8-12 inches of snow
will affect the Sierras around Yosemite and Kings Canyon late tonight,
down to elevations around 6500 feet. We will stay mostly dry through
Wednesday with a good bit of sunshine and daytime highs that are
slightly above average, in the lower to middle 70s. Lows will be in
the40s. The only fly in the ointment will be that upper low that will
rotate up into Georgia, potentially spreading clouds and maybe a
shower into East Alabama late on Tuesday into Wednesday. By
Wednesday, the western system will spin up a strong surface low over
Colorado. An outbreak of severe weather will affect areas from
Northeast Texas to Iowa on Wednesday. This system will weaken as it
moves slowly northeast. Rain and storms will spread into Alabama late
Thursday afternoon. Severe weather parameters don't look impressive
for us here in Alabama. The main hope is that the system will take
its time moving across the state and give us at least an inch of
rain. The rain should move out by Friday afternoon, setting the stage
for a nice weekend with lots of sunshine and slightly cooler
temperatures.

SKY SHOW THIS WEEKEND: At twilight tonight, look for a gorgeous
crescent moon emerging side by side with the planet Venus from the
sunset. Up and to the left, you will also see another bright object,
the planet Jupiter. The crescent moon will feature some beautiful
earthshine. Earthshine is sunlight that reflects off the Earth,
lighting the surface of the moon in a faint glow. Tomorrow night,
gaze to the southwest at sunset to see of string of celestial pearls,
including Jupiter, the crescent moon and Venus lined up across the sky.

TROPICS: The North Atlantic hurricane season is slowly winding down
toward a November 30th end. Of course, we can still have tropical
cyclones after November 30th, but they are rare. Not much happening
right now. The Gulf Upper low may help spin up a system off the
Southeast coast by Tuesday. If this happens, the system could bring
rain, wind and heavy surf to the East Coast from Georgia to the
north. There are other signs that we could see a tropical depression
form over the southern Caribbean in the next week or so however. We
will be monitoring.

ON THIS DATE IN 1848: James Espy, one of the leading weather
authorities of his day, was working on the nationwide network of
weather observers that the Smithsonian's Joseph Henry was
establishing. Espy was known as the "Storm King" because of his
treatise "Philosophy of Storms." On this date, Espy was distributing
a circular through Congress seeking volunteer weather observers across
the country. Response was tremendous. By the start of the Civil
War, Henry would have over 600 observers. In 1850, Henry established
a pictorial map in Washington DC so that the public could view the
observations collected each day. The weather map became one of
Washington's most popular meeting spots.

...Welcome To November...

The eleventh month of the year is starting much as
the tenth ended. Beautiful weather is in store for the weekend into
the early part of the week. A big storm system out west will weaken
before bringing us a chance of rain and storms later in the week.

TIME CHANGE: Don't forget to set your clocks back an
hour tonight before retiring to bed. You get an extra hour to sleep
tomorrow morning! Did you know that it is Daylight Saving Time, and
not Daylight Savings Time? You are "saving daylight."

THE WEEKEND: A simple forecast for today and tomorrow.
High pressure over the East Coast is in control of our weather. A
weakening upper level disturbance is passing to our south, but it will
not affect us here in Central Alabama, except for perhaps a few
clouds. The system will form an upper low over the northern Gulf, and
could spread moisture back into Southeast Alabama by tomorrow, but
rain chances will be limited. For central sections of the state,
today will and tomorrow will feature mostly sunny and mild
conditions. Tonight will be clear and chilly. Temperatures both days
will be in the low 70s after a morning start around 40 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Tuesday and Wednesday will be dry across the
area. Meanwhile, a strong storm will be affecting the western U.S.
This system will be lifting out by the north, with a surface low over
Iowa by Thursday morning. A cold front will be approaching Alabama
from the west. It looks like the best chance for rain and storms will
be Thursday now. This system will produce severe to the west of us by
Wednesday. Nothing is expected to get out of hand in the severe
weather department here, as the primary dynamics will be well to the
north by the time it arrives.

VOODOOLAND: The GFS shows a big wet weather storm system
affecting Alabama by Thursday the 13th. Since that is voodooland, we
will simply mention it at this time and wait to see what develops.

PIGSKIN WEATHER: In college football, Arkansas State
will be the Alabama Homecoming guests at Tuscaloosa today for a 2:00
p.m. kick off on PPV only. The temperature should be
around 74 at kick off and upper 60s by the final whistle. Auburn will
play Ole Miss in Oxford this morning with an early kick off at 11:30
televised on Raycom. The temperature will pop out in the mid 70s later
in the game. UAB will be at Hattiesburg to play Southern Mississippi
in a night game. About 67 degrees for the 7:00 p.m. kick off and in
the 50s by the end of the game. It will be a great weekend for pigskin
action.

SKY SHOW THIS WEEKEND: At twilight tonight, look for a
gorgeous crescent moon emerging out of the sunset side by side with
the planet Venus. Up and to the left, you will also see another
bright object, the planet Jupiter. The crescent moon will feature
some beautiful earthshine. Earthshine is sunlight that reflects off
the Earth, lighting the surface of the moon in a faint glow.
Tomorrow night, gaze to the southwest at sunset to see of string of
celestial pearls, including Jupiter, the crescent moon and Venus lined
up across the sky.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870: At 7:35 a.m., United States Army
Signal Corps observers at 24 sites around the country simultaneously
made weather reports and transmitted them to Washington where a
national weather map would be drawn. This started the process of
sending out weather reports by telegraph to metropolitan newspapers.
This would be the beginning of our present day National Weather Service.

...Picture Perfect Weekend...

COOL NIGHTS AND PLEASANT AFTERNOONS: I guess we could describe our
weather now as being picture perfect. I mean by that, that you should
get out this weekend with your old camera and get some nice autumn
foliage pictures. Driving across the NE part of Jefferson County this
morning (the full length of Deerfoot Parkway, to be exact), I could
clearly see at least three distinct ridges and the colors are still
muted in the woodland areas. However, out in the open, some individual
trees as usual are determined to put on a great show. Several teenage
trees at the west end of Deerfoot would make a great postcard scene.

We look for mostly sunny weather to continue into next week with lows
at night in the upper 30s, but mostly in the 40s and highs in the low
to mid 70s. That is ideal autumn weather. Yes, we do need rain and
indications are we may get some of that late in next week, with
probably the better chance Thursday and Thursday night. We do not know
how much yet, but there could be a few thunderstorms involved.

FOOTBALL AND TRICK-OR-TREATERS: For the high school games that will
be played tonight, great weather with temperatures falling into the
50s with little or no wind and clear weather. There may be some upper
40s if you are still out at 10:00 tonight.

SATURDAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Mostly clear for all of these games.
Auburn will be in Oxford to play Ole Miss with an 11:30 kick off on
Raycom. The temperature should peak about 75 during the game. Arkansas
State will be the Alabama opponent for homecoming in Tuscaloosa
kicking off at 2:00 p.m. and available on PPV only. About 73 degrees
at kick off and upper 60s when you go home. UAB is in Hattiesburg for
a game with Southern Mississippi in a night game. 67 at the 7:00 p.m.
kick off and in the 50s in the 4th quarter.

FLY IN THE OINTMENT: Vast area of nice weather across a big part of
the USA today. However, a slight disturbance aloft and a cold pool
aloft set off a few severe thunderstorms over extreme SW Missouri and
extreme NW Arkansas. Hail was the main feature and it covered the
roadways for a time around Bentonville, Rogers and Springdale,
Arkansas. There were some 1-inch hailstones in SW Missouri.

GLOBAL ROAMING: One of my favorite weather stations in the far NW to
check on each day is Old Crow in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada.
Even late this morning they were reporting 24 below zero. The coldest
in that part of the world was 26 below at Chandalar Lake, Alaska. In
the lower 48, it was 14 above at Shirley Basin, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When Little Miss Molly needs to go to
the bathroom, it becomes the most important event in the world—at
least in her eyes. She can whap that little bell on the back door so
hard that it reminds me of the big dinner bells mounted on tall poles
out in the country when people working in the fields were summoned to
come eat. I overslept until 6:15 this morning and I felt guilty, but
before I could get any work done, she was ringing the bell. I had
taken only 2 sips of coffee, so I put my shoes on, let my coffee get
cold and away we went. It is so relaxing to take her for a walk, so I
really did not mind. She always seems so appreciative, especially when
we get back home and she gets a treat. I do not get a treat for going
to the bathroom. Some animals have privileges that humans do not, but
life goes on and on and on.

...Fine Fall Weekend...

MILD AFTERNOONS: We wrap up the month of October today with a
beautiful autumn day; maximum available sunshine with a high close to
70 degrees this afternoon following a chilly morning. And, the weather
won't change much over the weekend with a very dry airmass holding in
place; afternoons will remain comfortably mild with cool nights. Highs
over the weekend will be generally in the 70 to 75 degree range, about
where we should be for early November.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cool for high school games tonight with
temperatures falling through the 50s and maybe into the 40s by the
final whistle. In college football, Arkansas State will be the Alabama
Homecoming guests at Tuscaloosa tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. kick off on
PPV only. Temperature should be around 74 at kick off and upper 60s by
the final whistle. Auburn will play Ole Miss in Oxford tomorrow with
an early kick off at 11:30 televised on Raycom. The temperature will
pop out in the mid 70s later in the game. UAB will be at Hattiesburg
to play Southern Mississippi in a night game. About 67 degrees for the
7:00 p.m. kick off and in the 50s by the end of the game. It will be a
great weekend for pigskin action.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of next week looks dry and pleasant; our
next chance of rain will come at the end of the week as a cold front
approaches. The latest model data hints at a weaker system that won't
bring a chance of strong storms, but we will keep an eye on things for
possible changes. Don't forget that our fall tornado season begins
tomorrow; tornadoes and severe storms can happen easily during
November and the first half of December.

FALL BACK: Don't forget we go back on standard time over the weekend;
set your clocks back one hour before going to bed tomorrow night. The
sun will set Sunday afternoon around 5:00 p.m. At least we pick up an
hour of sleep.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 15 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years), and learn
from one of the most brilliant weather researchers in the country, our
own Dr. Tim Coleman. We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend
this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin
at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert
Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show.
There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up,
but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Extended Clear Weather...

A MILDER TREND STARTS: It will still be rather chilly tonight, but
not as cold as on previous nights. It is postcard clear across Alabama
this afternoon, but the dew points are still mostly in the 20s. With
light winds tonight, that makes me believe that many sections will
fall into the 30s again and even some upper 20s in the North Alabama
valleys. Across Central Alabama, we are calling for an average low of
38. But as we all know, that can vary greatly because of temperature
inversions when a cold air mass is trying to leave the state. Even in
Jefferson County there was a 10-degree difference this morning between
Pinson with 31 and Clay/Deerfoot (only about 5 miles away) with 41.
Here are a few selected lows around Alabama this morning. As usual, we
have a more complete list on the 33/40 Blog:

24 at Sardis Springs and Hamilton
26 Broomtown
28 Muscadine, Scrougout
36 Birmingham Airport
31 Tuscaloosa
33 Montgomery

The ABC 33/40 Skywatcher for the tiny community of Scrougout in NE
Etowah County, reports 8 mornings with frost and 5 with freezing
temperatures just in the last 12 days. The season is getting an early
start.
Looks like mostly sunshine all the way through the weekend. After
upper 30s tonight, lows will be mostly in the 40s over the weekend and
by the weekend, highs will be in the mid 70s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cool for high school games tonight and
Friday night with temperatures falling through the 50s and maybe into
the 40s by the final whistle. In college football, Arkansas State will
be the Alabama Homecoming guests at Tuscaloosa Saturday for a 2:00
p.m. kick off on PPV only. Temperature should be around 74 at kick off
and upper 60s by the final whistle. Auburn will play Ole Miss in
Oxford Saturday with an early kick off at 11:30 televised on Raycom.
The temperature will pop out in the mid 70s later in the game. UAB
will be at Hattiesburg to play Southern Mississippi in a night game.
About 67 degrees for the 7:00 p.m. kick off and in the 50s by the end
of the game.

MOVING THE OLD CLOCK: We gain an hour of sleep Saturday night and
Sunday morning. Our sunset time on Sunday will be just before 5:00
p.m. So, when you go to bed Saturday night, if you do, set your clock
back one hour.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The latest snow survey shows that 2.7% of the lower
48 states had a snow cover. A lot of the area is in the NE part of the
country. This latest storm dumped 16 inches in 16 hours at
Prattsville, New York and 11 inches in 12 hours at Old Forge. In the
high country of the west, 283 inches was on the ground at Alpine
Meadows in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains of California. Satellite snow
surveys indicate that snow covers the inner 1/3 of Canada, most of
Alaska and the snow extends far south over the pole into Northern
Russia. Cold temperatures this morning included 16 at Stanley, Idaho
and 27 below at Chalkyitsik, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure enjoyed my noon walk with Little
Miss Molly. We met a lady on the walking track that had to put down
her Dachshund several months ago. She is still hurting and they plan
to get another Dachshund later. She and Molly had about a 1 minute
love session with Molly getting a good head rub and a back scratching.
Perfect walking weather. I had a short-sleeve shirt and actually
perspired a little. Visibility must be 80 miles today. Autumn leaves
are looking better, but the ridges are still muted. Molly and I still
hope for the best. She likes to play in piles of leaves after they
have fallen. Life goes on.

...Extended Clear Weather...

Our sunset time on Sunday will be just before 5:00
p.m. So, when you go to bed Saturday night, if you do, set your clock

...Dry Through The Weekend...

WARMER AFTERNOONS AHEAD: Afternoons will be progressively warmer
through the weekend as temperatures slowly return to average levels
for late October and early November. We expect a high close to 70
today, followed by low 70s tomorrow, and mid 70s over the weekend.
Morning lows will be mostly in the 40s, and the air will remain dry as
a bone with no chance of rain.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cool weather conditions for high school
games both tonight and tomorrow night, with temperatures falling
through the 50s, possibly reaching the 40s by the fourth quarter.
Saturday, Alabama will host Arkansas State for their annual homecoming
game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (2:00 p.m. kickoff on PPV
only). The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 74
degrees, dropping into the upper 60s by the final whistle. Auburn will
travel to Oxford, Mississippi to play Ole Miss (11:30 a.m. kickoff on
Raycom); the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from near 68
at kickoff into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. And, UAB will be
play a night game against Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg (7:00
p.m. kickoff); the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from
near 67 at kickoff into the 50s by the end of the game.

WE GAIN AN HOUR OF SLEEP: Yep, we go back on standard time this
weekend. Set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday
night; our sunset time Sunday will be a few minutes before 5:00 p.m.

LONG RANGE THOUGHTS: The first half of next week should remain dry,
but a strong upper trough will bring our next chance of rain toward
the end of next week, around Friday November 7. Colder air will follow
the rain.

YESTERDAY'S FROSTY START: The coldest temperature we could find
yesterday morning was from the small community of Grantley, in the
north part of Cleburne County not too far from the Georgia line; the
low there was 20 degrees with widespread frost. The official low at
Birmingham was 30 degrees, effectively ending the 2008 growing season.
A freeze was even seen at Mobile, where the low was 32. The
temperature dropped to 34 degrees at Jack Edwards Airport at Gulf
Shores.

BITTER COLD AIR CONTINUES TO BUILD: Some serious cold weather is going
on up in Alaska for October; the cold spots yesterday were Beaver and
Chalkyitsik with 30 degrees below zero. The afternoon high yesterday
at McGrath, Alaska was 6 degrees with six inches of snow on the
ground. Coldest places in the lower 48 were Embarrass, MN and
Gunnsion, CO with 14 degrees, only six degrees colder than the low of
20 we mentioned at Grantley, Alabama. The big snow event in the
Northeast U.S. is winding down with only a few lingering flurries
today over Pennsylvania and New York.

...Dry As A Bone...

SUPER CLEAR: You have seen us occasionally mention severely clear.
That is a word a pilot coined a long time ago when he wanted to fly. I
would call the weather today "super clear." Never used that term
before, but I was out doing chores over a good part of NE Jefferson
County early this morning and it was so clear that I could not find a
cloud anywhere—not even any jet contrails. The distant ridges were
sharp and clear.

It was a cold morning with our lowest temperature so far this season.
Here is a short list. We have a longer list on the blog:

20 Grantley in North Cherokee County
23 Hamilton
26 Haleyville, Centreville, Lafayette
27 Gadsden, Tallagdega, Tuscaloosa
30 Birmingham Airport
31 Montgomery
32 Mobile

The 27 low in Tusclaoosa was the lowest ever recorded on October 29.
Montgomery, with 31, tied the record.

LOOKING DOWN THE ROAD: All we can see at this time is more clear
weather with chilly nights, but afternoons that will be getting
milder. Dew points across Alabama this afternoon were mostly in the
20s. The high-pressure area is going to be sitting right over us
tonight, so we have lowered our low tonight to 33. There will probably
be a bigger variation in the temperatures tonight. On some of the
ridges, it may be closer to 38 or 40, but look for more frost in the
valleys.

WAY TOO COLD IN ALASKA: In Fairbanks, this has been the fourth
coldest October on record with an average temperature of nearly 9
degrees below normal. The NWS says it will likely end as one of the
top two or three coldest Octobers ever. The temperature in Fairbanks
has been above average on only two days this month.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Did you know that an avalanche can sweep downhill so
fast that the fastest skier has no chance of escaping. In extreme
cases, the tons of snow can accelerate at over 200 mph knocking down
trees everywhere in its path. Coldest temperature in the lower 48 this
morning was 14 at Embarrass, Minnesota. It was 25 below zero at
Chandalar Lake, Alaska. On Mount Washington visibility was near zero
and blowing snow with a temperature of 10 degrees and the wind was as
high as 83 mph. In the Great Smoky Mountain National Park on Mt.
LeConte, the high yesterday was only 18 and the low this morning 12.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had me out before
sunrise again today. It sure was pretty with the early morning light
reflecting off the frost. She has been in her investigative mode
lately stopping to see everything along the way and sticking her
little nose in clumps of grass. At one point this morning, when she
withdrew frost fell on top of her head and she had a salt and pepper
hairdo. I stood there laughing and she gave me the funniest look. What
good is a dog if you cannot laugh at them. She and I read each other
like a book. Life goes on.

...A Slow Warming Trend...

AFTERNOONS TURN MILDER: After a frosty start, temperatures should warm
nicely under a strong late October sun today; most communities will
see a high around 60 degrees, which is warmer than yesterday, but
still well below today's average high of 70. It will be hard to find a
cloud in the Alabama sky. Tonight will be another cold one, although
not quite as cold as night night. We figure most spots will be in the
mid 30s by daybreak tomorrow, but the colder valleys should experience
yet another freeze.

The warm-up becomes more pronounced tomorrow and Friday as afternoon
highs rise into the low 70s. The weather looks excellent for the high
school football games Friday night, with a clear sky and temperatures
falling through the 50s during the games, possibly reaching the upper
40s by the fourth quarter.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A very dry airmass stays in place, so the weekend
will feature a bright sunny sky both Saturday and Sunday with highs
generally in the 70 to 75 degree range. Mornings will remain chilly
with lows mostly in the 40s. The dry weather should linger into the
first two days of next week.

BIG TIME COLD: It is really hard to find any really warm weather
across the vast North American continent; up in Alaska Chandalar Lake
dropped to 29 degrees below zero yesterday. Here in the continental
U.S., a major early season snow storm was the headline yesterday over
parts of the Northeast; more than a foot of snow fell in parts of the
Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania and the Adirondacks in
upstate New York. Last night's World Series game in Philadelphia was
called off due to the wet and cold weather. Snow fell as far south as
the North Carolina/East Tennessee mountains. In New York City, the
rain total was exactly two inches (2.00") with temperatures all day
holding in the 43 to 47 degree range. Coldest spots in the lower 48
were both in Montana; Westby and Polebridge dropped to 10 degrees.

FALL BACK: Don't forget we go back on standard time this weekend; we
set the clocks back one hour late Saturday night; the sunset time
Sunday evening will be a few minutes before 5:00 in the afternoon.

You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters, and

country, our own Dr. Tim Coleman. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by
3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free
admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no
admission charge, and no need to register!

...Overdosing on Sunshine...

ANOTHER COLD, FROSTY NIGHT: We do not see much chance of rain at all
for the next 5 to 7 days. Instead, it would be a continuation of sunny
days and clear nights. Probably the main immediate concern is a frost
and freeze tonight, especially in the valleys. We posted a long list
of low temperatures on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but let me give you a
few samples of how cold it was this morning:

23 in Broomtown and Grantley (both in NE Alabama)
24 in Cottondale
27 in Millport and Hamilton
30 Helena, Tuscaloosa, Anniston and McCalla
36 Montgomery

The big high-pressure system that wasted no time moving down through
the central part of the country, was centered near Tulsa and Little
Rock this afternoon. The high will be over Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama by daybreak. The wind will drop off more quickly tonight. This
will allow overnight temperatures to be as cold or maybe a bit colder
than last night. Here in Central Alabama, we are calling for an
average low of 31. But we caution, this is not a one-temperature town
or even a one-temperature region because of the varied terrain. So,
this means some of the colder valleys will be well down into the 20s
tonight while some of the ridges will not even get down to freezing.
Still a good idea to protect from frost overnight. It should melt off
pretty quickly tomorrow morning.

Then we have moderating temperatures the rest of the week and mostly
sunshine. By Friday and Saturday, highs should be in the lower 70s,
but night will still be cool.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Today we take an imaginary trip to the huge country
of India. That big place covers 1.3 million square miles. The country
has a huge variety in weather due to the extremely varied terrain. The
landscape ranges from parched northern deserts to tropical rainforests
in the south. The Great Indian Desert covers the NW part of the
country and the huge Himalaya Mountains border the north. Remember, it
is not far north of the border until we find Mount Everest—the highest
mountain in the world. Causing many of the weather problems in India
is the Bay of Bengal. Big storms moving north have to rise when they
get into the high country. This permitted Cherrapunji, India to get
inundated by over 1,000 inches of rain in one year.

BACK HOME IN THE GOOD OLD USA: It was 6 above zero at Shirley Basin,
Wyoming and 28 below zero at Chandalar Lake, Alaska. In the Great
Smoky Mountains, it was 15 atop Mt. LeConte. How would you like to be
at Cape Romanzof where it was 24 degrees this afternoon with SE winds
to 60? Big storm in the NE USA. Saranac Lake in Upstate New York
expecting 6 to 10 inches of snow with over a foot in some areas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly was 6 years old in
August. You would think she would be slowing down a bit. Not so. We
absolutely had the most vicious ballgame at midnight last night that I
have ever seen. In could not even throw the ball across the room
without her outrunning it. She would come back and slam the ball on my
foot and bark real loud several times. She got so excited that she
slammed the little bell on the back door 5 or 6 times in a row as hard
as she could meaning that she needed an urgent trip outdoors
(bathroom). So, we had a midnight walk. Life is never dull in this
little household. Life goes on.

...Frost On The Pumpkins...

FREEZE/FROST POTENTIAL TONIGHT: The coolest air so far this season
will continue to blow into Alabama today; despite maximum sunshine,
temperatures should be 15 degrees below average; we will have a hard
time pushing past the low 50s today. Then, tonight with a clear sky
and light wind, temperatures will drop quickly after sunset, and the
stage is set for a widespread frost event early tomorrow morning. We
figure there will be a big spread in low temperature reports; we are
forecasting an average low of 32, but the range should be from 23 in
the coldest valleys to 38 ridgetops above 1,500 feet. For many North
Alabama communities, this will signal an end to the 2008 growing
season. We should note that Thursday morning will be cold as well,
with potential for another light freeze for the colder valleys; most
spots will be in the mid 30s at daybreak Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: At this time the weather looks excellent with
sunny comfortable days and clear chilly nights. The high on Friday and
Saturday will be from 70 to 75, with early morning lows generally in
the 40s. A fresh supply of cool and dry air should arrive Sunday that
will knock highs back into the upper 60s. The dry weather will
continue into Monday of next week. Some hint at a few showers by
Tuesday or Wednesday, but that is only a chance at this point.

TROPICS: We need to remember that the hurricane season will continue
until the end of November; a disturbance about halfway between the
coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles shows some sign of
organization; it will be watched closely as it moves to the west in
coming days. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet. It is rare for
major hurricanes to strike the central Gulf Coast this late in the
season; we note that the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island
Sea Lab has dropped to a cool 67 degrees. You generally need water to
be around 80 degrees (F) or warmer for significant tropical systems.

We had a packed house last year.

...A Dry Week Ahead...

A RISK OF FROST: A strong high-pressure system over the Central
Plains is pushing SE. It as a central pressure of 1040 milibars. You
probably could care less about that, but I am saying it to illustrate
that it is a stronger and colder high-pressure system than usual for
so early in the season. What does all of this mean?

It looks like a dry week of weather. Little or no chance of rain
before next weekend, even if then. Meanwhile, it will be almost all
sunshine for the next several days separated by clear, colder than
usual, nights. This afternoon the temperature was only in the 40s atop
Mt. Cheaha and in the low 50s across North Alabama with NW winds
gusting to over 25 mph at times. The dew point is very low.
Translation: low humidity. This means a significant increase in the
threat of woodland fires. The gusty winds are not favourable for
boating on lakes and rivers.

THE FROST DANGER: We are calling for an average low across Central
Alabama tonight around 34. Some of the colder valleys will be a bit
lower. However, believe the wind will not completely die down, so any
frost should be light and in protected areas. The high-pressure system
will be right over us Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. This will
give us a better chance of widespread frost and temperatures around
freezing. It is near certain that we will have some lows in the upper
20s in the valleys by Wednesday morning. Up in the valleys of NE
Alabama it could be 2 or 3 degrees colder than that. Finally, a
warming trend will start Wednesday afternoon and we should have highs
70 or better starting Thursday and going through the weekend. However,
we could get a resurge of cooler air by Sunday holding our high
temperatures into the upper 60s.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Getting downright cold in Alaska—even colder than
usual for them so early in the season. It was a bitter 34 below zero
this morning at Chandalar Lake, Alaska. It was 31 below at Bettles
where there was 9 inches of snow on the ground. The snow survey today
shows that virtually all of Alaska has a snow cover as well as part of
the Aleutians. A bunch of NW Canada also has a snow cover. It was 24
below zero at Alert, the northernmost weather station in Canada early
this afternoon. Down here in the lower 48 states where all the borders
rub against each other, it was 8 above zero at Pine Ridge, South
Dakota and Shirley Basin, Wyoming.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Just another example of it at a ranch in
San Jose State of Northern Uruguay. A bolt of lightning hit a wire
fence one day last week and killed 52 cows. They were pressing against
the fence at the time. I remember a case a number of years ago where
about 15 cows gathered under a tree and were killed during a West
Alabama thunderstorm. Livestock naturally seek shelter in such places.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound Molly sure does amaze
me. There are about 36 homes in our development with a walking track
all the way around and the backyards face the track. I believe she
knows every single house where there is a doggy and also where people
live that love her. She will often sit in the wet grass in the edge of
their backyard swishing her tail hoping they will come out and
belly-rub her. Yesterday morning, she had me out before sunrise and we
immediately had a delightful surprise. We met Jo-Jo, the beautiful
little white dog that we had not seen in at least six months and the
one that Molly originally wanted to marry. They approached each other
slowly and actually kissed for about 10 seconds. Then Jo-Jo turned and
ran back home through the hedgerow and Molly just sat there and cried.
I almost did also. Life goes on.

...Frost/Freeze Tomorrow Night...

A strong cold front swept through Central Alabama overnight, ushering
in cooler, very dry air that will lead to some chilly temperatures
over the next couple of days. Winds will gust to over 20 mph at times
today. Frost could be widespread tonight and tomorrow night. In
addition, the low humidities and strong winds this afternoon will
produce a high fire danger across Central Alabama. Outdoor burning
should be postponed and everyone should be extremely alert to the
potential for development and spread of wildfires.

FROST/FREEZE POSSIBILITIES: Those winds will not diminish until late
tonight. This will reduce the possibility of frost overnight. In
areas, where the wind might drop in the last couple of hours before
dawn, temperatures could be colder than expected and frost could
occur. But the far better chance will be Tuesday night as the high
pressure ridge settles in over the state. Temperatures will go below
freezing for a time across much of Central Alabama. Frost will be
widespread and precautions should be taken to protect tender
vegetation.

REST OF THE WEEK: Cool and dry conditions will prevail through
midweek, with moderating temperatures after that. Highs today will be
in the middle 50s. Readings on Tuesday will also remain in the 50s.
The mercury will struggle to edge above 60 on Wednesday. By Thursday,
we will edge back up to near 70 and 70s will be commonplace on Friday.
Trick or treaters should have fine conditions Friday evening, as will
high school football games.

THE WEEKEND: The weekend f November promises to be good weather
wise. A dry front will move through on Saturday, only serving to
reinforce the dry conditions, and knocking temperatures a degree or
two for Sunday.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Alabama's drought conditions were just about
unchanged week over week according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. 12.1
percent of the state is in drought status now, while 91.3 percent of
the state is at least abnormally dry. The center of the drought in
the Southeast is over upstate South Carolina where 11.8 percent of the
state is in a level 4 or exceptional drought.

TROPICS CHECK: The tropical Atlantic is quiet right now, with no
disturbances threatening to develop into tropical cyclones. That is
not expected to change over the next seven days, as the global models
still show no signs of any development anytime soon.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: Over 1,700 firefighters were battling the
deadliest wildfire in the U.S. in five years in Riverside County,
California. Less than 20 miles west of Palm Springs, the deliberately
set fire was burning through its second day. Aided by hot, dry Santa
Ana winds, the fire burned at least forty square miles. Four
firefighters had perished the day before, and a fifth was critically
injured as they tried to save a house. Rewards totaling $500,000 were
posted for the arrest and conviction of any individuals involved in
setting the inferno. The new DC-10 Supertanker plane was used to
battle the fire.
