...Nice Weather To Continue...

Trick or treaters enjoyed nearly perfect weather across Central
Alabama last night. Halloween on a Friday night. A whole weekend to
enjoy all those treats. Those were good times when we were kids. And
the good weather will continue for at least the next five day. Oh.
Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour before going to bed as we
fall back out of Daylight Saving Time.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Our recent run of fine weather will continue through
the weekend. That interesting little upper disturbance that we saw
swinging out of Oklahoma yesterday will spin up into an upper low over
the northern Gulf. It might spread some clouds back into Alabama by
Tuesday, but for now mostly clear skies will prevail through
tomorrow. Highs on Sunday will again be in the middle 70s after a
refreshing start in the lower 40s Sunday morning.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The big storm system out west will bring rain,
storms, snow and wind to the West Coast today. 8-12 inches of snow
will affect the Sierras around Yosemite and Kings Canyon late tonight,
down to elevations around 6500 feet. We will stay mostly dry through
Wednesday with a good bit of sunshine and daytime highs that are
slightly above average, in the lower to middle 70s. Lows will be in
the40s. The only fly in the ointment will be that upper low that will
rotate up into Georgia, potentially spreading clouds and maybe a
shower into East Alabama late on Tuesday into Wednesday. By
Wednesday, the western system will spin up a strong surface low over
Colorado. An outbreak of severe weather will affect areas from
Northeast Texas to Iowa on Wednesday. This system will weaken as it
moves slowly northeast. Rain and storms will spread into Alabama late
Thursday afternoon. Severe weather parameters don't look impressive
for us here in Alabama. The main hope is that the system will take
its time moving across the state and give us at least an inch of
rain. The rain should move out by Friday afternoon, setting the stage
for a nice weekend with lots of sunshine and slightly cooler
temperatures.

SKY SHOW THIS WEEKEND: At twilight tonight, look for a gorgeous
crescent moon emerging side by side with the planet Venus from the
sunset. Up and to the left, you will also see another bright object,
the planet Jupiter. The crescent moon will feature some beautiful
earthshine. Earthshine is sunlight that reflects off the Earth,
lighting the surface of the moon in a faint glow. Tomorrow night,
gaze to the southwest at sunset to see of string of celestial pearls,
including Jupiter, the crescent moon and Venus lined up across the sky.

TROPICS: The North Atlantic hurricane season is slowly winding down
toward a November 30th end. Of course, we can still have tropical
cyclones after November 30th, but they are rare. Not much happening
right now. The Gulf Upper low may help spin up a system off the
Southeast coast by Tuesday. If this happens, the system could bring
rain, wind and heavy surf to the East Coast from Georgia to the
north. There are other signs that we could see a tropical depression
form over the southern Caribbean in the next week or so however. We
will be monitoring.

ON THIS DATE IN 1848: James Espy, one of the leading weather
authorities of his day, was working on the nationwide network of
weather observers that the Smithsonian's Joseph Henry was
establishing. Espy was known as the "Storm King" because of his
treatise "Philosophy of Storms." On this date, Espy was distributing
a circular through Congress seeking volunteer weather observers across
the country. Response was tremendous. By the start of the Civil
War, Henry would have over 600 observers. In 1850, Henry established
a pictorial map in Washington DC so that the public could view the
observations collected each day. The weather map became one of
Washington's most popular meeting spots.
