...Dry Through The Weekend...

WARMER AFTERNOONS AHEAD: Afternoons will be progressively warmer
through the weekend as temperatures slowly return to average levels
for late October and early November. We expect a high close to 70
today, followed by low 70s tomorrow, and mid 70s over the weekend.
Morning lows will be mostly in the 40s, and the air will remain dry as
a bone with no chance of rain.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cool weather conditions for high school
games both tonight and tomorrow night, with temperatures falling
through the 50s, possibly reaching the 40s by the fourth quarter.
Saturday, Alabama will host Arkansas State for their annual homecoming
game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (2:00 p.m. kickoff on PPV
only). The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 74
degrees, dropping into the upper 60s by the final whistle. Auburn will
travel to Oxford, Mississippi to play Ole Miss (11:30 a.m. kickoff on
Raycom); the sky will be sunny with temperatures rising from near 68
at kickoff into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. And, UAB will be
play a night game against Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg (7:00
p.m. kickoff); the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from
near 67 at kickoff into the 50s by the end of the game.

WE GAIN AN HOUR OF SLEEP: Yep, we go back on standard time this
weekend. Set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday
night; our sunset time Sunday will be a few minutes before 5:00 p.m.

LONG RANGE THOUGHTS: The first half of next week should remain dry,
but a strong upper trough will bring our next chance of rain toward
the end of next week, around Friday November 7. Colder air will follow
the rain.

YESTERDAY'S FROSTY START: The coldest temperature we could find
yesterday morning was from the small community of Grantley, in the
north part of Cleburne County not too far from the Georgia line; the
low there was 20 degrees with widespread frost. The official low at
Birmingham was 30 degrees, effectively ending the 2008 growing season.
A freeze was even seen at Mobile, where the low was 32. The
temperature dropped to 34 degrees at Jack Edwards Airport at Gulf
Shores.

BITTER COLD AIR CONTINUES TO BUILD: Some serious cold weather is going
on up in Alaska for October; the cold spots yesterday were Beaver and
Chalkyitsik with 30 degrees below zero. The afternoon high yesterday
at McGrath, Alaska was 6 degrees with six inches of snow on the
ground. Coldest places in the lower 48 were Embarrass, MN and
Gunnsion, CO with 14 degrees, only six degrees colder than the low of
20 we mentioned at Grantley, Alabama. The big snow event in the
Northeast U.S. is winding down with only a few lingering flurries
today over Pennsylvania and New York.
