==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: It seems we have been doing this all too often the past
twelve months. Talking about another major hurricane threatening the
northern Gulf Coast, that is. Hurricane Katrina, the eleventh named storm
of the 2005 North Atlantic hurricane season will go down in history as a
monster. The storm is feasting on the 86-88 degree waters of the Gulf of
Mexico this afternoon. One phase of rapid intensification leveled off
finally this morning.

It resulted in elevating Katrina to Cat Three status. Another one is
probably not far behind and we could see a Cat Four hurricane later today.
The official NHC forecast strengthens Katrina to 140 mph by tomorrow
afternoon. Since intensity change is the least understood of the hurricane
processes, don't be surprised if Katrina is even stronger. That is not good
news.

FORECAST TRACK: We caution everyone with interests in the future path of
Katrina not to focus on that mesmerizing black line of the official forecast
track. Forecast errors, especially out this far are very large. The range
of landfall points where Katrina could end up spans over 300 miles of
coastline from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Destin, Florida. Most of the
model guidance this morning, including our global forecasting models, are
concentrated heavily in Southeast Louisiana. This is a very dangerous
situation for New Orleans, where southeasterly winds could funnel water into
Lake Ponchartrain from the east, forcing it over the levees and into the
city. Emergency management officials have been preaching this doomsday
scenario for years. Hopefully, it will not come to pass this time. There
are very detailed plans to reverse the flow of Southeast Louisiana highways
later to help get as many people as possible out of harms way.

COASTAL IMPACTS: Hurricane conditions are going to be experienced over a
wide area of the coast when Katrina makes her final move. Tropical storm
force winds will be felt above an area 325 miles wide at landfall. Winds
over 58 mph will be experienced over at least a 175 mile area. Hurricane
force winds will be experienced over a 100 mile wide spread. The core of
140 mph plus winds will cover an area around the eyewall. You can see, this
is going to be a monstrous storm. In addition, a powerful storm surge,
perhaps as high as 15-20 feet will smash the coast along with battering
waves. Tornadoes will be likely north and east of the center as it comes
ashore and heavy rainfall amounts will cause flooding.

OUR IMPACT: Today should be nice, with just a couple of isolated storms
forming, if any. We will see our humidity levels come up slowly along with
a light easterly breeze on Sunday. Things will begin to go downhill quickly
on Monday with increasing wind, rain and even possible tornadoes by
afternoon into the overnight hours. The horrible weather will last into
much of Tuesday with conditions slowly improving from the south during the
day. Better weather should follow Katrina, with drier air filtering in on
northwesterly winds behind the system.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: The Sea Islands Hurricane came ashore near Beaufort,
South Carolina, killing 2,500 people. It is at least the fourth deadliest
U.S. hurricane.

...Katrina And Her Waves...

GOOD MORNING: Do you remember the 80s band Katrina and the Waves?
They sang a feel good Summer song called Walking on Sunshine. It hit the
charts in 1985. Well, I don't want to sound rude, but I think that I speak
for all Alabamians when I say that Katrina can just take her waves
elsewhere. Unfortunately, it looks like Katrina is set on a rendezvous
somewhere along the northern Gulf Coast, quite possibly on the Alabama,
Mississippi or Northwest Florida coasts. It still also poses a huge threat
to the New Orleans area. We will be waiting and watching for the next two
and one half days as Katrina makes up her mind.

GULF COAST IN THE CROSSHAIRS: Katrina has the potential to become
one for the record books. The water over the Gulf of Mexico is extremely
warm and the amount of upper level shear is very low. Katrina should
continue to intensify today, and we actually expect a period of rapid
intensification. This could make Katrina a Category Four, possibly even a
strong Category Four hurricane before landfall.

DESTINATION? Katrina is expected to gradually turn to a northerly
course over the next 60 hours, ahead of a trough of low pressure that is
digging southeastward across the Central part of the nation. Landfall could
come anywhere from western Louisiana to the Apalachicola area. There is a
good chance that it could be in the Mobile/Pensacola/Biloxi area. This of
course would spell terrible trouble for the coastal sections of Alabama,
Mississippi and Northwest Florida with winds of over 140 mph and a huge
storm surge. Hurricane watches will likely be issued this morning.

As it nears land, it is expected to gradually recurve northeastward,
spelling potential trouble for us here in Central Alabama starting Monday..
Weather conditions will deteriorate over our area starting Monday morning,
with increasing wind and very heavy rains. The worst should come Monday
afternoon into Monday night.

NEEDLESS TO SAY: All Alabamians must pay close attention to the
latest information on extremely dangerous Katrina.

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast - Special Update

This is an update to the E-Forecast that was sent earlier this afternoon:

ALABAMA MAY HAVE TO DEAL WITH A MAJOR HURRICANE: We are making wholesale
changes to our forecast early in the week. Things have taken a turn for the
worse with Hurricane Katrina and there is a possibility that Alabama will be
dealing with a major hurricane early in the week. Late this afternoon, the
National Hurricane Center made a major change in their track forecast. They
have been persistent that landfall number two with Katrina would be on the
NW Florida coast, maybe around Panama City. Now, the track has been shifted
a long way to the west near Biloxi on the Mississippi coast. Compounding
this bad news, is the fact that there are still strong indications that
Katrina will become a major hurricane before landfall. This could be a
Category 3 or even a Category 4. If this happens, she will be in the class
with Opal and Ivan. Wherever she makes landfall, damage could be widespread.

We certainly are not trying to be alarmists, but we are pointing out all of
the possibilities. She is expected to make landfall on the Mississippi coast
not far west of Mobile early Monday afternoon. This means that much of the
Alabama coast would be on the worst side of the hurricane and there could be
huge battering waves, a big storm surge and an enormous amount of rain, not
to mention the destructive winds. After landfall, the track angles NE
passing near Birmingham early Tuesday morning and then to near or east of
Huntsville Tuesday afternoon.

Assuming that she increases to a Category 4, there could be significant tree
and power line damage as far north as Birmingham with widespread power
outages. For the Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Annistom, Gadsden areas the worst
weather will be from late Monday through most of Tuesday morning. The
forecast track is the worst possible scenario for both Mobile and
Birmingham.

A BIG CAUTION: All of this is assuming that the NHC track is correct. Even
minor changes could change the impact on our area. It is, as usual, a watch
and wait situation. Katrina is going to be a big rain producer and, if that
track is correct, we could have extremely heavy rainfall amounts somewhat
like Hurricane Ivan.

PLAYING THE WAITING GAME: We have to do that when we get a tropical storm
or hurricane in our backyard, especially in the last two or three days
before landfall. Now, we have Hurricane Katrina and after you mix all the
ingredients in the pie, she has the capability of becoming a major hurricane
before making her second landfall on the northern Gulf Coast.

Early this afternoon, it seemed that the most favored area for landfall
Monday morning would be in the NW Florida Panhandle, possibly around Panama
City or maybe west of there. One thing is for sure, there will probably be
several changes to that landfall projection by landfall.

Katrina did more damage than expected in South Florida. There were several
recorded wind gusts close to 100 mph. Press reports indicate well over one
million people without power, four fatalities from falling trees.

HOW WILL KATRINA AFFECT ALABAMA? If the current track forecast is correct,
most of the heavier rain and wind will be east of Alabama, except possibly
the SE counties and part of East-Central Alabama. There could be some heavy
rain in those areas, especially Monday. The Alabama coast would be on the
better side of the hurricane and would have off shore winds and little or no
storm surge, especially if the eye goes inland where projected. But, I
always say, "Look for hour-by-hour surprises in the hours before landfall."

61 INCHES OF RAIN IN MOBILE: That 1.72 inches they got yesterday swelled
their total for the year to 61.04 inches, which is more than 15 inches too
much!

LOOKING AROUND: We have sort of ignored bad weather in other areas because
of Katrina. However, parts of Kansas has really caught it in the last few
days with excessive rain and flooding...in the last 24 hours, 4.55 inches
of rain at Emporia...114 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday, selected
lows this morning included 68 in Valley Head, Alabama's coolest, 47 atop Mt.
Leconte in the Smoky Mountains and 24 at West Yellowstone, Mont., parts of
South Florida got 13 inches of rain overnight...dew points were in the 60s
across much of Alabama today after being stuck in the 70s so long...could
you tell?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly sure does look funny with
her new trim...she resembles a long narrow swamp rat but we love her no
matter. She always comes home subdued after spending hours at the beauty
shop...we think it because her sleep is disturbed, she loves long daytime
naps...or she may remember that being the place where she lost her chance at
motherhood...I took at 32-minute power nap at mid-morning and Molly was
responsible for waking me...she came roaring into the master bedroom, became
airborne and landed at my feet. Then she walked across my body five times
before I could get my eyes open...she had one of her favorite balls in her
mouth. Translation, "wake up, Big Guy, time to play ball. Of course I did.
Life goes on.

...Keeping an Eye on Katrina...

Katrina moved into southeast Florida late yesterday just north of Miami as a
category one hurricane. The highest recorded wind gust was 92 mph at Port
Everglades. Over 400,000 people had no power as of late last night, and at
least two deaths were reported due to trees falling on cars.

Katrina will emerge in the southeast Gulf of Mexico today, and could grow
stronger again over the warm water. We still expect Katrina to take on a
more northward component of motion over the weekend, and the latest landfall
projections are clustered around Apalachicola late Sunday night or early
Monday morning.

The forecast track then moves up through southern Georgia and into the
Carolinas. If this track is correct, the bulk of the wind and rain will
remain east of Alabama. The best chance of significant rain in our state
will come the far southeast counties, in places like Eufala and Dothan.

Once again, we stress there is always uncertainty in forecasting any
hurricane, and the current forecast track could change. But for now, there
threat to the Alabama coast looks small.

THE ALABAMA STORY: If Katrina indeed stays east of the state, we will be
pretty much high and dry for the next five to seven days. Of course, this is
August in Alabama, so you can't totally eliminate the risk of an afternoon
shower, but they should be very isolated. Highs will range from the mid to
upper 80s over east Alabama to near 90 over the western part of the state
over the weekend, near normal for this time of the year.

There is even a chance that cooler air could be pulled southward by the
middle of next week as Katrina moves up the Atlantic seaboard. Some upper
50s are not out of the question by Wednesday or Thursday morning.

==================================================================

A GIRL NAMED KATRINA: She is the main concern for weather in the southeast
over the next several days. Based on the latest National Hurricane Center
track forecast, Alabama should get by without any real adverse weather. But,
remember, the second landfall over the NE Gulf of Mexico coast will not
occur until late Sunday night or early Monday, so things are not sealed in
stone yet. Katrina was approaching the SE Florida coast this afternoon and
she was slowly getting stronger. A Hurricane Warning was in effect from Vero
Beach southward to Florida City including Lake Okeechobee. Sustained winds
had increased to 70 mph and she may reach hurricane force before landfall.

After crossing extreme South Florida and emerging near or south of Ft.
Myers, the projected path takes her to about 200 miles west of Tampa at
daybreak Sunday and inland over the NW Florida coast probably after midnight
Sunday night. This could be near or east of Appalachicola. After getting
inland, the forecast is NE through SW and Central Georgia into South
Carolina by Tuesday morning. If all this holds true, Alabama will stay on
the dry side of Katrina and not get much rain. One model, however, continues
her on a westward track into the Central Gulf of Mexico. We will watch all
of this. Rainfall is going to be extremely heavy, especially over Central
and South Florida with major flooding possible.

THE ALABAMA STORY: See our day-by-day forecast for what we expect.
Scattered thunderstorms were underway this afternoon, but they will thin out
this evening. We expect showers and storms to be quite scarce on through the
weekend. We do expect some drier air to circulate into the state from the
east with lower dew points. That will keep our temperatures easier to deal
with.

VERY DRY NORTH ALABAMA: While much of Central and South Alabama has a
general excess in rain so far this year, especially around Mobile, the
extreme northern part of the state is very dry. The rainfall deficiency for
the year has now reached 11.64 inches in Muscle Shoals and 10.50 inches in
Huntsville.

FAR AND WIDE: In the war zone, highs should be between 118 and 120 in
Basrah, Iraq. Baghdad will have 114 tomorrow, but cooling slightly to 108 to
110 early next week...a hard freeze in part of Idaho this morning,
especially in Custer County. There was a low of 20 in Copper Basin and 21 in
Stanley. Another hint that the season is beginning to change...113 in Death
Valley was the hottest yesterday...as much as 4 inches of rain in parts of
Kansas overnight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Check out that big photograph on page 8E of
this morning's Birmingham News. A dog named Sam is the three-time champion
of the world's ugliest dog. He is a Chinese Crested. Molly is a small part
Chinese Crested powder puff, but mostly a Shih-tzu. When Molly gets back
from the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) late this afternoon, maybe I should take a
closer look. We love Molly so much that we may have overlooked the ugly
part. Do not think so. I could never call her ugly. Not only is Molly a
pretty little 9-pound dog, but she loves me dearly and that means
everything. She has also got to be one of the friendliest little dogs in the
whole wide world. You can never be downcast if Little Miss Molly is around.
Life goes on...and more fun with Molly around

...Drier Days for Alabama...

As drier air works into Alabama from the north and east, afternoon showers
and storms will be few and far between in coming days. The chance of any one
spot getting wet today is only about one in five, and that drops to one in
ten by tomorrow and over the weekend.

The drier weather will likely last well into next week, assuming tropical
storm Katrina stays east of the state.

KATRINA: The system is expected to become a minimal hurricane as it
approaches the southeast coast of Florida between Fort Pierce and Fort
Lauderdale late tonight. Katrina should turn northward either over the
Florida peninsula, or the far eastern Gulf of Mexico tomorrow night, which
will mean copious amounts of rain for much of central and south Florida with
serious flooding possible. Then, a turn back to the northeast is likely over
the weekend, which will push Katrina toward Savannah and Charleston.

If our projected track is correct, Alabama will be on the "dry side" of the
circulation of Katrina, and we should be rain free through the first half of
next week. In fact, Katrina might even help to pull some cooler down this
way toward the middle of next week. We might even see some 50s here during
the early morning hours by Wednesday.

On the central Gulf coast, most of the wind and rain from Katrina should
remain east of Panama City.

AUGUST HEAT: Hot spots in Alabama yesterday were Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and
Muscle Shoals with 95 degrees.

ROAMING: Summer storms dropped 2.54" at Charleston, SC yesterday. National
hot spot was Death Valley, CA with 113. Dallas/Fort Worth, TX reached 100.

SHOWERS THINNING OUT: We may still get some widely scattered showers or
thunderstorms later this afternoon and this evening, but for a change most
of them will be east and south of Birmingham. By midday scattered ones were
already in progress over East-Central Alabama and extending southward. The
storms yesterday dumped over 2 inches of rain over Inverness in North Shelby
County and almost that much in nearby Greystone Cove.

You can look at our day-by-day forecast for all of the details, but we
expect showers to be scarce at least through Saturday as slightly drier air
comes in from the east-a modified version of the old wedge effect. Our high
temperatures will also be more tolerable than in recent days.

FOCUSING ON THE TROPICS: That is where our attention will be heavily
concentrated for the next several days and you can blame that on a lady
named Katrina. This afternoon she was growing stronger over the Central
Bahamas and was located about 30 miles ENE of Nassau in the Bahamas or some
200 miles ESE of the SE coast of Florida. Winds had increased to 45 mph and
she could reach hurricane force before making landfall on the SE coast of
Florida. That is the official National Hurricane Center track forecast to
bring it across South Florida emerging into the SE Gulf and then heading NW.
By Monday morning, she is expected to regain hurricane force and be centered
over the North Gulf south of the NW Florida Coast. At this point, we must
interject a big dose of caution because that is still five days away. We
will be able to get a much better handle later.

One thing for sure, there is plenty of warm water in the Gulf. Hurricanes
thrive on 85 degree water temperatures, but in the Gulf they now range
between 87 and 90!

It is ironic that a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning is now in
effect for the SE Florida coast from Vero Beach southward to Florida City,
because on this same date in 1992, super powerful Andrew had made landfall
in Southern Dade County near Homestead as a Category 5 hurricane.

WAR ZONE WEATHER: It is certainly hot this time of year in most of Iraq and
part of Afghanistan. A high of 118 was expected today in Baghdad with highs
of 110-114 for the rest of the week. In Basrah, highs are expected to be 118
to 120. Most of these temperatures will occur with the humidity less than
10%. While we are talking temperatures, contrasting sharply to that, it was
104 below zero today at Vostok, Antarctica where they are in late
winter...in the USA, lows included 32 at Meacham, Oregon, 35 at Barrow,
Alaska and 49 atop Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains.

NOTABLE RAINFALL: Yesterday, 2.96 in Atlanta; 3.11 in Brawley Wash near
Tucson; over 2 inches at Inverness in North Shelby County; and 4 inches at
Yakutat, Alaska. Numerous streets were closed in Tucson yesterday with major
flooding.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly getting a lot of long naps
today. I completely wore her out yesterday, because it was her birthday.
Many thanks for all of the greetings for Molly. I will acknowledge them all
a bit later. We played so much yesterday that we had the unusual occurrence
of Molly begging for rest, because she was so pooped. I have never seen her
do that before. Some of our ballgames and wrestling sessions lasted over 30
minutes. When we went to bed last night, she was worn out, but she snuggled
and sure had an appreciative look on her face. Afraid I have raised the bar
even higher.

...Eyes Turn To The Tropics...

Trouble is brewing in the tropics. Tropical depression 12 formed
yesterday in the southeast Bahamas, and has the potential to become tropical
storm Katrina today. The system is forecast to move across the southern tip
of Florida as a tropical storm, then moving into the Gulf of Mexico where
the system is forecast to become a hurricane. With extremely warm sea
surface temperatures and little shear aloft, this system has the potential
to become a major tropical cyclone if it follows this track into the Gulf.

We caution you the system is still in the early development phase,
and there is considerable spread among the various computer models. Another
words, the forecast track could change. But, everyone along the Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida Gulf coast needs to understand that
hurricane preparations might have to begin as early as Friday.

In the eastern Atlantic, a strong tropical wave could become
tropical storm Lee today or tomorrow. That one should recurve into the open
Atlantic, and seems to be no threat to land.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Afternoon showers and storms should gradually
thin out today and tomorrow as drier air works into the state, and by Friday
and Saturday most communities should be rain-free. The weather next week
will all depend on the developing tropical system.

MORE SUMMER SOAKERS: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included
1.51" at Oak Grove (Jefferson county), 1.38" at Greystone Cove, 1.20" at
Hollins (Clay county), .95" at Riverchase, .91" at Trussville, and .54" at
Helena. Over in Atlanta, the city was soaked with 2.93" yesterday. Out west,
some flash flooding was reported, and Tucson reported 2.29" of rain.

IN SEARCH OF FRESH AIR: Not here, mind you, but to our north dew
points today were around 65 in Nashville and in the 50s over Northern
Kentucky. What does that mean? It means the same temperature there would be
more comfortable than here today, because our dew points exceed 70 degrees-a
lot more humid.

While we are traveling, we go up into Northern Minnesota in the
Superior National Forest where it was 29 degrees this morning at Embarrass.
The Minnesota north woods are high on my "want-to-visit-list." I am running
out of time because I have so many places on my list.

BACK TO REALITY: Thunderstorms were developing over North Alabama
this afternoon, although they got off to a slower start than yesterday. We
are hoping that our storms today will not be so vicious, but a few of them
should be strong later this afternoon and evening.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be in our picture again
Wednesday and Thursday. However, a bit of good news-a high pressure system
building over the NE states will give us a slight wedge effect from the east
starting Thursday and our high temperatures will back off a bit. Our highs
will be close to 90, although over near the Georgia border they could be
closer to 86. This action will also decrease our showers and thunderstorms.
We think they will be very scarce on Friday and Saturday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Jose was demoted to a depression this morning as
he moved west through Mexico. Now we must divide our attention to the
Atlantic. What was old TD #10 is now a broad low pressure area causing some
disturbed weather from Cuba to the SE Bahamas. It has become a little better
organized over the SE Bahamas. Could become a TD again later today as it
moves WNW at 5 to 10. A reconnaissance plane was going in for a look see
this afternoon. One of our models brings the center to the lower East
Florida coast by late in the week and then northward to near the
Georgia-South Carolina coast by Monday. Other models show a variety of
solutions including the Gulf of Mexico. Way out in the Eastern Atlantic, a
large tropical wave may become still another depression in the next couple
of days. We do not know which one will be named first, but here are the next
few names on the list: Catrina, Lee, Maria, Nate and Ophelia.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Tried to be nice to Little Miss Molly
on her birthday. As soon as she got out of bed this morning and made a quick
dash to the backyard for things necessary, I started chasing her and playing
ball even before she could eat breakfast. She is always instantly ready to
play. We played ball full blast for 30 minutes plus a wrestling session on
the king-sized bed and then more chase ball. She finally grabbed one of her
favorite balls, dove into my recliner which was her signal to please let me
get some rest, big guy. We have had several more ball games today. Thanks
for the e-mail birthday greetings for Molly. I will acknowledge all of them.
I want to salute Roberta Brackett, one of our daily readers. Back in April
she learned that a little Australian Silky dog named Sassy might be put to
sleep because of her age and illness. She adopted Sassy and even though she
is on daily medication for a thyroid condition, Roberta has become just as
attached to her as her other two dogs and one cat. That is a great story.
Life goes on.

...More Afternoon Storms Ahead...

Moist air, hot daytime temperatures, and a stalled front just north of us
all add up for more afternoon showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today
and tomorrow. And, like yesterday, some of the storms will be strong.

The showers and storms should thin out greatly late this week as a wedge of
drier air slips into Alabama from the east.

TROPICAL ACTION: Tropical storm Jose developed quickly yesterday in the Bay
of Campeche, and moved into the Mexican coast late last night with 50 mph
winds.
We also are watching a tropical wave, remnants of former tropical depression
ten, moving through the southern Bahamas. Some of the computer models
regenerate this system into a significant tropical cyclone, and have it in
the southeast Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Too early to determine if this
will keep moving west, toward Texas, or if it will turn northwest toward the
central Gulf coast. It needs to be watched closely.

And, the eastern Atlantic is active with a couple of strong tropical waves.

STORMY MONDAY: Severe summer storms knocked down trees and power lines
yesterday at Holly Pond and Ashville. At the Shelby County Airport, the NWS
measured winds of 51 knots (59 mph) before their equipment failed. One
airplane was destroyed, and a couple of hangers were damaged. Trees were
blown down at several places along Alabama 119 between Alabaster and
Montevallo from that same storm.

Rain totals included 1.37" at Ashland, 1.26" at Steele and at the ABC 33/40
Weathernet site in Cullman, 1.14" at Sterrett, .97" at Calera, .94" at
Greystone Cove, and .54" at Black Creek in Etowah county near Gadsden.
