...Eyes Turn To The Tropics...

Trouble is brewing in the tropics. Tropical depression 12 formed
yesterday in the southeast Bahamas, and has the potential to become tropical
storm Katrina today. The system is forecast to move across the southern tip
of Florida as a tropical storm, then moving into the Gulf of Mexico where
the system is forecast to become a hurricane. With extremely warm sea
surface temperatures and little shear aloft, this system has the potential
to become a major tropical cyclone if it follows this track into the Gulf.

We caution you the system is still in the early development phase,
and there is considerable spread among the various computer models. Another
words, the forecast track could change. But, everyone along the Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida Gulf coast needs to understand that
hurricane preparations might have to begin as early as Friday.

In the eastern Atlantic, a strong tropical wave could become
tropical storm Lee today or tomorrow. That one should recurve into the open
Atlantic, and seems to be no threat to land.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Afternoon showers and storms should gradually
thin out today and tomorrow as drier air works into the state, and by Friday
and Saturday most communities should be rain-free. The weather next week
will all depend on the developing tropical system.

MORE SUMMER SOAKERS: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included
1.51" at Oak Grove (Jefferson county), 1.38" at Greystone Cove, 1.20" at
Hollins (Clay county), .95" at Riverchase, .91" at Trussville, and .54" at
Helena. Over in Atlanta, the city was soaked with 2.93" yesterday. Out west,
some flash flooding was reported, and Tucson reported 2.29" of rain.
