...More Afternoon Storms Ahead...

Moist air, hot daytime temperatures, and a stalled front just north of us
all add up for more afternoon showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today
and tomorrow. And, like yesterday, some of the storms will be strong.

The showers and storms should thin out greatly late this week as a wedge of
drier air slips into Alabama from the east.

TROPICAL ACTION: Tropical storm Jose developed quickly yesterday in the Bay
of Campeche, and moved into the Mexican coast late last night with 50 mph
winds.
We also are watching a tropical wave, remnants of former tropical depression
ten, moving through the southern Bahamas. Some of the computer models
regenerate this system into a significant tropical cyclone, and have it in
the southeast Gulf of Mexico this weekend. Too early to determine if this
will keep moving west, toward Texas, or if it will turn northwest toward the
central Gulf coast. It needs to be watched closely.

And, the eastern Atlantic is active with a couple of strong tropical waves.

STORMY MONDAY: Severe summer storms knocked down trees and power lines
yesterday at Holly Pond and Ashville. At the Shelby County Airport, the NWS
measured winds of 51 knots (59 mph) before their equipment failed. One
airplane was destroyed, and a couple of hangers were damaged. Trees were
blown down at several places along Alabama 119 between Alabaster and
Montevallo from that same storm.

Rain totals included 1.37" at Ashland, 1.26" at Steele and at the ABC 33/40
Weathernet site in Cullman, 1.14" at Sterrett, .97" at Calera, .94" at
Greystone Cove, and .54" at Black Creek in Etowah county near Gadsden.
