ANOTHER SCORCHER: Get ready for another scorcher across Alabama
today. Temperatures are already climbing through the 90s at most
locations. Everyone will top out in the middle to upper 90s, except
for a few locations that will see the century mark again. Decatur,
Selma, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Troy and Muscle Shoals all reached the
100 degree mark on Friday.

SEVERE WEATHER TODAY: There is a moderate risk of severe
thunderstorms over the eastern Dakotas and western Minnesota today.
An influx of high moisture values will lead to high instability ahead
of an approaching cold front today. Throw in some strong speed and
directional shear and you have the recipe for severe thunderstorms.
There could be a few tornadoes early in the episode this afternoon
before the storms become a squall line.

HEY WAIT: We're in a slight risk today too. Much of the southern
two thirds of Alabama is included in the slight risk area. The
combination of high heat and humidity and a weak boundary will fire
storms this afternoon. Shear levels are low, so storm organization
will not really be an issue, but strong pulse thunderstorms could
produce some impressive wind. And don't forget, even garden variety
storms produce deadly lightning.

OUR FORECAST: The broken record that is our forecast continues.
After today's enhanced thunderstorm chances, we will settle back into
our lethargic pattern of high heat and humidity, hazy conditions and
widely scattered afternoon and evening storms.

THE HEAT IS ON: Record highs from yesterday: Asheville NC 92F;
98F at Charlotte, 103F at Tupelo; 98F at Charleston SC and 100F at
Brunswick, GA.
RIP CHRIS: Tropical Depression Chris was written off by the
National Hurricane Center this morning. Turned out the global models
that predicted the demise of the developing tropical cyclone from the
beginning were right. The rest of the tropical Atlantic is quiet.

ON THIS DATE IN 1783: The Mount Asama volcano in Japan erupted
violently, blowing the top off of the mountain and sending huge
amounts of ash into the atmosphere. Over 1000 villagers were killed
by lava, steam, moiling mud and superheated gases as its pyroclastic
flow engulfed the villages on the northern flanks of the mountain.
Sunlight was blocked over northern Japan for several months, resulting
in a famine that killed 1.4 million Japanese. The Winter of 1783-84
was remarkably cold in the Eastern United States, as noticed by
Benjamin Franklin from Philadelphia. Although he did not know of the
eruption, he did hypothesize that the cold temperatures were the
result of a fog of dust in the atmosphere over Europe and North
America. The cold was so intense that sleds could cross the Long
Island Sound and the harbor at New York was frozen for 10 days.

==================================================================

GOOD MORNING: Our forecast package this morning will include a weak
cold front. Actually, it is in the witness protection program for
weather features. You may hardly recognize it as a front.

STRONG STORMS?: The front will trigger a few widely scattered storms
as it moves southward today. Any of these storms that gets its act
together will have the potential to produce strong damaging winds. So
watch out for that. Highs today will make it well into the 90s, like
yesterday.

MOVING AHEAD: The rest of the weekend will look a lot like today,
with partly cloudy skies, hot temperatures and a slight chance of
afternoon and evening storms. Highs will continue above normal.

MORE HOT WEATHER: High pressure will begin intensifying as we head
into the new work week, and we will see some scorchers again during
the next seven days. Expect daily doses of widely scattered or
isolated afternoon and evening storms. But don’t expect much in the
way of relief from the heat.

KEEPING AN EYE ON CHRIS: But there is not much to keep an eye on.
Reconnaissance aircraft last evening still found a circulation, albeit
a weak one. Later satellite photos revealed an even more disorganized
system. If it is not already disintegrated into an open wave by the
time I finish writing this, it probably will have by the time you read
it. If, and that is a very big if, it holds together long enough to
get past Cuba, it may re-intensify into a tropical storm over the Gulf
of Mexico. The good news for the northern Gulf Coast is that the
ridge of high pressure should keep any system heading west into Texas.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Hurricane Allen reached Category 5 status for
the first of 3 times during its long path across the Atlantic as
reconnaissance aircraft measured a 911 mb pressure in the eastern
Caribbean while south of Puerto Rico.

WEEKEND SLIGHT HEAT RELIEF: The key word is “slight,” but every
degree helps. You can thank a cold front for that, except that the
word cold should be de-emphasized. The front was up in NW Tennessee
this afternoon and will push down into Alabama. The front will likely
fizzle out somewhere over the north or central part of the state,
although some projections take it to south of Montgomery by Saturday
morning. By late Saturday, it will already be working its way back
north.

So, what does all of this maneuvering mean? We think it gives us our
better chance of some showers and thunderstorms Sunday than on any
other day. This afternoon there was a cluster of strong thunderstorms
over West Tennessee moving toward the SE ahead of the front. A few of
those could become severe this afternoon. Much of North and Central
Georgia is also under a slight risk.

Here in Central Alabama, we have included a chance of a thunderstorm
tonight. The ones that do form could be a bit on the heavy side,
especially through the evening. The old thermometer will go back up
into the mid 90s Saturday, but we think highs on both Sunday and
Monday will be in the 90-92 range. It will start heating up again by
Tuesday and for the middle of next week look for mid 90s again.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: How do you like this for heat relief? In the
Big Apple, where temperatures topped out between 101 and 103 for a
couple of days, today’s high will only be about 88...up in Boston,
where they got close to 100, it was only 73 degrees early this
afternoon...it was still plenty hot yesterday at a number of places.
It was 101 in the nation’s capitol, but Saturday they should only
have 88 with lower humidity...it was 105 yesterday in Wichita Falls,
Texas...in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, the high has been 100 or above
on about 15 days in a row...the lowest in the lower 48 this morning
was 36 at Stanley, Idaho.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Chris was demoted today and is now only a tropical
depression and poorly organized over the SE Bahamas. The remnants were
moving west at 13 mph and this should continue for the next 24 hours.
Peak winds were only 35 mph and a slight increase would bring him back
to tropical storm status. The National Hurricane Center continues a
forecast very much unchanged from yesterday, bringing him along the
north coast of Cuba and then directly across the Central Gulf with a
landfall near the mouth of the Rio Grande River Wednesday morning. He
is not expected to reach hurricane strength.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and thunderstorms
through Monday but there will be intervals of sunshine. The storms
should decrease in number by Tuesday. The sea surface temperature just
off Pensacola was a very warm 90 this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has always loved our
grandkids. She considers them her private playmates. She also likes
our grown kids and when my son Steve dropped by for a visit this
morning, she was all over him. Another late night walk last night and
it was still plenty muggy outside. So, Little Miss Molly did not
object when I suggested we come back home for a treat. I decided to
have a treat also, which turned out to be a cup of fresh coffee. Life
goes on, but it is going to be much better in October with cooler
weather...when we get home now we look and feel like a wet towel.

GOOD MORNING: Tropical cyclones have a way of making us weather
humans feel silly. Especially when it comes to forecasting intensity.
When Chris first formed, we never thought it would make it to day
three because of wind shear. But then the storm started to take off,
and it looked like we might be dealing with a strong storm before it
was over with. It certainly looked like a lock to become the season's
first hurricane, but suddenly, it began to weaken. Then by this
morning, it was nothing but an exposed circulation devoid of
convection. Talk of the tropical cyclone's demise was widespread by
late afternoon.

Then a heavy shower appeared near the center. It weakened too, but
then lots of showers and storms began to fire and wrap around the
circulation. Only time will tell if this is a bonafide trend. I
think that it might be and Chris could make a comeback. Assuming the
system survives, it should have a brush with the north coast of Cuba
then emerge into the Gulf of Mexico. It will be headed toward South
Texas by late Wednesday.

OUR WEATHER: Chris will play no part in Alabama's weather. A cold
front sliding in from the northwest later today will. Plenty of hot,
moist air will be available for thunderstorms to develop, especially
during the afternoon. Some of them could be on the strong side. The
front stalls to our south on Saturday, then comes back northward as a
warm front on Sunday. The best chance of weekend rain will come on
Sunday for us.

NEXT WEEK: By Monday, we will be back in a typical summertime pattern
with the ridge building over us. That means more isolated to
scattered daily afternoon storms and hot temperatures.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Dallas finally saw its incredible string of 42
straight days with temperatures over 100 degrees broken on this date.
There would be 18 more 100 plus days in August and 4 more in
September. July 1980 was the hottest month ever in the Big D.

THE BAKING ALABAMA COUNTRYSIDE: The old sun ball is relentless. It
just will not give us a break. We do see a little bit of relief down
the road late in the weekend and early next week when there will be a
better chance of some afternoon thunderstorms. By Sunday and Monday,
our high temperatures should back off just a bit to about 93.
Meanwhile, let us all suffer together Friday and Saturday as
temperatures soar well into the 90s. We are calling for an average
high Friday of 96 across Central Alabama. Some spots could easily
reach 98 and a 100 is not out of the question. Yesterday one of the
hotter temperatures in the state was 100 at Hamilton and Cordova. It
was 98 in Montgomery. Everybody had 90s.

Oddly enough, there is a cold front involved. It is certainly not cold
air, but some drier air and some slightly lower temperatures will be
pushing down through the central part of the country. Some of the
latest model data hints that this front will push into Alabama and
stall. That is very hard to believe, but at least it may increase
slightly the chance of a cooling shower or storm over the weekend.

THE SITUATION IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Chris took a nose dive
overnight. This afternoon he was becoming even weaker and more
disorganized some 250 miles ESE of Grand Turk Island. The National
Hurricane Center thinks he will deteriorate into a depression later
today. Highest sustained winds were only 40 mphâ??scarcely tropical
strength. At one time, Chris was destined to become a hurricane, now
the NHC forecasters say that he will only be a depression all the way
into the Central Gulf of Mexico. By daybreak Tuesday, he is projected
to be squarely in the Central Gulf due south of New Orleans. We think
he will move ashore near the mouth of the Rio Grande River late
Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. The tropical models go
along generally with this scenario. It looks like the high pressure
ridge will hang on and protect the Alabama coast from being
threatened.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: New York City is still cooking. They had 102
yesterday afternoon with the heat index close to 115, but they will
get some relief later today and especially tomorrow as a cool front
moves in from the NW...a few other hot temperatures from yesterday
included 104 in Wichita Falls, Tex., 103 in Oklahoma City and Fort
Smith, Ark., 102 in Topeka and Phoenix, 101 in Norfolk, Dallas-Ft.
Worth, Richmond, St. Louis and Waco.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A lot of folks headed down for a final play in
the sand before school starts. Intervals of sunshine every day through
the weekend, but also some daily scattered showers and storms. About a
1 in 3 chance each day. Highs 90 to 92.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: So busy last evening that I did not get
to play with Molly. In fact, woke her up at midnight for a late walk
to her great outdoor bathroom. When we came back in, she insisted on
an all-star game. We played one of the most fast-moving ballgames
ever. She was really pooped. She finally went to bed after midnight
and slept until 8:30 this morning. Gave me time to enjoy coffee and
speed-read the morning paper. Life goes on and it is more enjoyable
with fresh coffee and a morning paper.

VERY UNCOMFORTABLE HEAT: The story goes on and on. The old
thermometer refuses to stay away from the 90s and in some places it is
registering upper 90s. Yesterday Hamilton had 100 for one of the
hottest spots in the state.

Again this afternoon, there were very few showers or storms to offer
any cooling. A few had developed over East-Central Alabama and some
scattered ones in the far SW where a sea breeze was helping.

The chance of an afternoon thunderstorm is quite smallâ€"also Thursday
and Friday. We believe there will be a slight increase in the number
of thunderstorms during the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday.

We do not see any complete break in the heat all the way through the
weekend, although the high temperature may back off a degree or so
over the weekend.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A flight into Tropical Storm Chris this afternoon
shows that he has not strengthened much today. A Tropical Storm
Warning remains for Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin
Islands. He was located about 100 miles NE of St. Thomas and moving
WNW at 10. Sustained winds were 65 mph. He could become a hurricane
during the next 12-24 hours. Of course, the paramount question is his
future course. The official tracking chart from the National Hurricane
Center brings him toward the WNW as a hurricane passing north of the
Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba and moving through the
Florida straits and reaching the SE Gulf of Mexico by Monday morning.
I doubt if there is a hurricane in recent years that will be
scrutinized more closely after it gets to that point.

SEVERE WEATHER: A lot of that has been up north in the last few
months. This afternoon a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect for
Vermont and New Hampshire and Upstate New York. Even the mountain
locked resort of Saranac Lake was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
Down here in Alabama, in that huge blanket of heat and humidity,
almost any thunderstorm that forms could briefly produce hail or high
winds, but they should be few in number.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Don’t think I would want to be in the Big
Apple. They were expecting 104 this afternoon with a low tonight of
only 87. That means all-night work for the air conditioners. The
officials were watching the power grid very closely. Absolutely no
time for a rolling blackout...a cold front had pushed down into the
center part of the country bringing some great heat relief. Kansas
City will cool from 104 yesterday to a high of only 86 tomorrow...the
temperature dropped to below freezing this morning at Stanley, Idaho
with 30...in Tuscaloosa, the temperature soared to 95 or higher on 19
days during July.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I always let my little pal dictate the
first walk of the day and this morning, with all of her zigzags, going
in circles, reversesâ€"we surely walked a full mile. I believe she
detected where one of the community rabbits had been strolling around
during the night. We haven’t seen any rabbits in 3 months and I sure
do miss them. Molly met one of our neighbors that she loves and she
got a good head scratching. That always makes her day. Every time I
walk through the living area, I try to pause, rub Molly and tell her I
love her. She looks at me like she understands. She owns my recliner.
Life goes on through heat and dryness. Life is better in October.

LIKE A BROKEN RECORD: That is what the forecast sounds like as we
plod through the same old stuff day after day. The only real variety
to the weather this week is who will get a shower or thunderstorm and
who will not. The science of weather forecasting is not good enough to
pinpoint which communities will get a thunderstorm in the
afternoon—even on the morning forecast. We may see an isolated storm
this evening and widely scattered ones Wednesday. There may be a
slight increase in afternoon thunderstorms Thursday. Then, from Friday
through the weekend about a 1 in 3 chance of an afternoon thunderstorm
each day. The afternoon heat will be rather consistent with most
communities heating to around 94 degrees each afternoon with warm and
muggy conditions continuing at night.
Thunderstorms yesterday were not as prominent as they were on Saturday
and Sunday, but some folks got good amounts of rain, mainly on the
west side of the state and in the Mobile area. At Brookley Field just
south of downtown of Mobile, a storm dumped 1.72 inches.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: We don't have it as bad as some other parts of
the country. In New York City tomorrow, the low is expected to be 82
with a high of 103 and with an afternoon heat index around 115. That
is a dangerous heat situation...hottest in the USA yesterday was 112
in Death Valley. They had been used to getting 120 to 126 for quite a
stretch...lowest this morning was 31 at Meacham, Oregon.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The tropical depression grew into Tropical Storm
Chris early today. Otherwise, no other strong indications of tropical
development. Chris was nearing the northernmost Leeward Islands this
afternoon. The center was located 65 miles ENE of Antigua. He was
moving WNW at 10 mph. Highest sustained winds were near 40 mph and he
may grow stronger in the next 24 hours. The official NHC track
forecast continues a NW path passing north of Puerto Rico and Cuba and
skirting the Southern Bahamas. Late in the weekend, there could be a
threat to South Florida, but that is not certain. The tropical models
are split on the path of Chris. At least three of the models agree
with the NHC forecast and one brings it into the SE Gulf of Mexico.
Four other models turn it more westward across the Dominican Republic
and Haiti which would tend to weaken it.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Because I was so far behind on other
work, Little Miss Molly has been greatly neglected in the last 24
hours. She is so accustomed to 5 or 6 ballgames each day that she has
a hurt look on her face when that doesn't happen. Last night when it
was bedtime, she ran away from my wife and hid behind me because she
was hoping I would have a late night ballgame with her. Sure hope to
catch up on that this afternoon and this evening. She has spent much
of today invisible in my recliner. It is the same color as she. Life
goes on.

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Friday July 21, 2006

=========================================
WANTED: ARBORIST
PAY AND BENEFITS: EXCELLENT

Do you have work experience in tree care operations
such as climbing and planting trees, trimming and
removing tree limbs? We need you in Civil Service!

Excellent Pay and Benefits!

For more about this position and many others, go to
http://www.jobsquest.org, the official recruiting site
for the Personnel Board of Jefferson County; recruiting
the Best and the Brightest for Civil Service for 24 cities,
agencies, and jurisdictions in Jefferson County, Alabama.
=========================================

TIME FOR SOME CHANGES: The atmosphere across Alabama today has been
more stable and there were no showers or thunderstorms in progress
into this afternoon. However, some widely separated ones will form by
late this afternoon and continue into the evening. We look forward to
an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and tomorrow
night and possibly lingering into Sunday morning. This should bring
some good rain amounts to much of the state, although not really
enough to completely alleviate the dry weather situation. Down side to
all of this is the possibility of a few storms becoming severe
Saturday. The better chance of those will be during the afternoon. The
National Weather Service unit in Norman, Oklahoma that handles severe
weather watches for the entire nation, has all of Alabama under a
slight risk for Saturday. The frontal zone should then push down into
Central or South Alabama by Sunday. Our confidence is low as to where
it would eventually stall.

HOW ABOUT THE HEAT? If you will excuse this afternoon, it looks
better. The old thermometer may not get any higher than 90 Saturday
and the upper 80s on Sunday. The extreme northern part of the state
should remain in the mid 80s both Saturday and Sunday. Even on Monday
and Tuesday, our highs should only be near 90. That even sounds cool
as compared to all of those 96-100 highs that we could never get used
to. See our day-by-day forecast and you will note a thinning of the
thunderstorms early in the week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Beryl did not cause any trouble.
The NHC has issued the last advisory on him as he moves quickly
northeastward some 200 miles WSW of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is losing
his heritage and becoming extra tropical. There are no other real
problem areas in the Atlantic Basin. We should mention that on this
date in 1997, Hurricane Danny was still causing real problems on the
Alabama coast. He dumped 30 inches of rain on the coastal sections of
Alabama causing major flooding. For a time, he stalled over the lower
part of Mobile Bay. Strong north and NE winds in the northern part of
his circulation actually pulled water away from the causeway between
Mobile and Baldwin County.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The tragic St. Louis story was overshadowed by
major world events. There was some more severe weather in St. Louis
this morning, but a few nights ago one of the worst storms in many
years knocked out power to almost 1/2 million people in that part of
the country and the heat was intense. Now St. Louis is going to get a
break. It should be cooler tonight with lows around 65. Fair with
brisk north winds and less humid on Saturday with a high of only
82...Chicago 1.66 inches of rain in the last 24 hours...hottest in the
USA yesterday was 123 in Death Valley...the lowest this morning was a
pleasant 41 at Yellowstone Lake inside Yellowstone National Park.

...Some Heat Relief Ahead...

This should be the last day of really blistering heat for Alabama for a
while. The mercury will climb into the 95 to 100 degree range again this
afternoon, and like the last several days showers and storms will form
during the peak of the heat.

THE WEEKEND: The core of the hot air will move off to the west, allowing an
upper air trough to form over the eastern U.S., and a surface front to drift
down into North Alabama by tomorrow night. This will mean a much better
coverage of showers and storms tomorrow, and because of the clouds and rain
most places will stay below the 90 degree mark for a change.
On Sunday, the front will continue drifting southward, and it could very
well be that the best chance of rain will be south of I-20 by afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: For now it looks like the most widespread showers and storms on
Monday and Tuesday will be over the southern half of the state, but the
moisture will return to North Alabama on Wednesday after the front falls
apart.

AT THE BEACH: A mix of sun and clouds for the central Gulf coast this
weekend, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. High temperatures along
the immediate coast will range from 88 to 91, and the sea water temperature
late yesterday was a very warm 91 degrees (F).

BIG SOAKERS: A slow moving thunderstorm over Shelby County dropped 2.17" on
the Old Cahaba subdivision in Helena. Another ABC 33/40 Weather Watcher in
Helena reported 1.79", which all fell in only 30 minutes and dropped the
temperature from 97 to 70 degrees . That same storm dropped 0.42" at the ABC
33/40 Weather Center in Riverchase. Up in Northeast Alabama, another slow
moving summer storm dropped 1.28" at Ellisville in Cherokee County.

==================================================================

FRONTAL SHOWERS LINGER: Last Saturday we held funeral services for
the grass in our yard, but maybe we acted too quickly. A frontal zone
insisted on coming down to near Birmingham and simply sitting down and
resting. This afternoon we see some showers forming along that old
frontal zone. It will slowly work its way back northward and for the
rest of the week, we will be in a warm and relatively moist air mass.

Bottom line: that means we will not be able to get by a single day
without at least a few showers and thunderstorms. It is difficult to
say which afternoon will have the better chance, but we believe that
will be about Wednesday. A great blessing in all of this, we do not
look for any 98 and near 100-degree heat for the next 5 to 7 days.
Part of that is due to a general wetting down of the landscape over
the weekend. Dry soil heats up faster.

We believe that a larger percentage of the Alabama countryside
received over the weekend than in a long time. At Birmingham Airport,
3.04 inches fell Saturday and Saturday night. Many other communities
received over 2 inches, but some areas were left high and dry.

A few other significant rainfall amounts over the weekend include
2.36 inches in Steele, 2.64 at Jordan Dam and 1.66 in Blount Springs.
Helena, in Shelby County, got over 3 inches in the last few days. Up
until that time they had received only 8/10 of an inch all month.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Do you ever wonder why people beg for rain
when 71% of the earth's surface is water and only 29% land? But it
happens. Did you also know that the NWS rates droughts like it does
tornadoes and hurricanes? They go from D0 to D4. Down over about the
southern 1/4 of Alabama, the drought is rated as extreme, which is D3.
Here across North-Central Alabama it is a moderate drought,
D1...coldest temperature in the lower 48 states this morning was 46 in
Bradford, Pennsylvania...Sunday's hottest was 125 in Death Valley,
which has become a habit this summer...it was a chilly 43 atop Mt.
LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains this morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The nervous weather area over the SW Gulf was
moving north at 5 to 10. Showers and storms over much of the Western
Gulf have increased and better organized. Data buoys have indicated 50
mph gusts this morning. The winds upstairs have become a little more
friendly and a tropical depression could form in the next day or so.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure is an honor to have Dr. John Knox
sitting in my office as I write this. John went to Huffman High School
and went on to great things in the world of meteorology at the
University of Wisconsin and Columbia University. He is now an
Associate Research Scientist at the University of Georgia. Back in the
late 1970s, I did not know that John was listening to me on weather
radio during all those stormy times and he gave me credit for making
him want to follow meteorology as a career. I feel deeply honored.
John will be a guest on our Weather Brains tonight...oh, the perils of
thunder. Little Miss Molly always heads for safe places at the first
sound of thunder. That is where she is now. She has about 5 places in
this house that she considers safe. I will be sure and play a world
series game with her when it is over. Life goes on.

SUMMERTIME... It seems like it is hot everywhere. I am in Bethesda,
Maryland today, and everyone is complaining. They say it is not
supposed to be this hot in Maryland. 96F at National Airport and 95F
at Dulles. Those readings are about 8 degrees above normal.

AT HOME: Temperatures in Alabama were running 2-3 degrees below those
here in Maryland. It was 93 at the Birmingham Airport on Monday.
Expect about the same again today. Storms will be isolated across the
area. Any that do manage to form could be strong, but they will be
few and far between.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Subtle difference will make all the difference
the next couple of days. We will broadbrush things by calling for a
slight chance of mainly afternoon and evening storms the next three
days. Now, the GFS hints as the potential for a low to develop over
the northern Gulf and move up into South Alabama. That would of course
spell a wetter weekend.

EYE ON THE TROPICS: A weak circulation developed in the wave east of
the islands last night. Convection really flared also. The system is
now Tropical Depression number 3. It will move west northwest across
the northern Leeward Islands. The official progs carry it to the
Bahamas by Saturday and to the East Coast of Florida by Monday. But
it may not survive that long.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: Over thirty five inches of rain fell in the
Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, TX on July 31st and August 1st
as the remnants of Tropical Storm Amelia stalled across the area after
moving inland. Major flash flooding resulted. My memory is of J.B.
Elliott passing along bulletins fro the Texas Hill country on NOAA
Weather Radio that morning. The weather in Alabama was fine, and J.B.
shared the dramatic reports in near real-time. Once again, J.B. doing
what he was famous for and still is today, making the weather
ultimately interesting.
