WEEKEND SLIGHT HEAT RELIEF: The key word is “slight,†but every
degree helps. You can thank a cold front for that, except that the
word cold should be de-emphasized. The front was up in NW Tennessee
this afternoon and will push down into Alabama. The front will likely
fizzle out somewhere over the north or central part of the state,
although some projections take it to south of Montgomery by Saturday
morning. By late Saturday, it will already be working its way back
north.
So, what does all of this maneuvering mean? We think it gives us our
better chance of some showers and thunderstorms Sunday than on any
other day. This afternoon there was a cluster of strong thunderstorms
over West Tennessee moving toward the SE ahead of the front. A few of
those could become severe this afternoon. Much of North and Central
Georgia is also under a slight risk.
Here in Central Alabama, we have included a chance of a thunderstorm
tonight. The ones that do form could be a bit on the heavy side,
especially through the evening. The old thermometer will go back up
into the mid 90s Saturday, but we think highs on both Sunday and
Monday will be in the 90-92 range. It will start heating up again by
Tuesday and for the middle of next week look for mid 90s again.
THE WORLD OF WEATHER: How do you like this for heat relief? In the
Big Apple, where temperatures topped out between 101 and 103 for a
couple of days, today’s high will only be about 88...up in Boston,
where they got close to 100, it was only 73 degrees early this
afternoon...it was still plenty hot yesterday at a number of places.
It was 101 in the nation’s capitol, but Saturday they should only
have 88 with lower humidity...it was 105 yesterday in Wichita Falls,
Texas...in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, the high has been 100 or above
on about 15 days in a row...the lowest in the lower 48 this morning
was 36 at Stanley, Idaho.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Chris was demoted today and is now only a tropical
depression and poorly organized over the SE Bahamas. The remnants were
moving west at 13 mph and this should continue for the next 24 hours.
Peak winds were only 35 mph and a slight increase would bring him back
to tropical storm status. The National Hurricane Center continues a
forecast very much unchanged from yesterday, bringing him along the
north coast of Cuba and then directly across the Central Gulf with a
landfall near the mouth of the Rio Grande River Wednesday morning. He
is not expected to reach hurricane strength.
WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and thunderstorms
through Monday but there will be intervals of sunshine. The storms
should decrease in number by Tuesday. The sea surface temperature just
off Pensacola was a very warm 90 this morning.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has always loved our
grandkids. She considers them her private playmates. She also likes
our grown kids and when my son Steve dropped by for a visit this
morning, she was all over him. Another late night walk last night and
it was still plenty muggy outside. So, Little Miss Molly did not
object when I suggested we come back home for a treat. I decided to
have a treat also, which turned out to be a cup of fresh coffee. Life
goes on, but it is going to be much better in October with cooler
weather...when we get home now we look and feel like a wet towel.
