FRONTAL SHOWERS LINGER: Last Saturday we held funeral services for
the grass in our yard, but maybe we acted too quickly. A frontal zone
insisted on coming down to near Birmingham and simply sitting down and
resting. This afternoon we see some showers forming along that old
frontal zone. It will slowly work its way back northward and for the
rest of the week, we will be in a warm and relatively moist air mass.
Bottom line: that means we will not be able to get by a single day
without at least a few showers and thunderstorms. It is difficult to
say which afternoon will have the better chance, but we believe that
will be about Wednesday. A great blessing in all of this, we do not
look for any 98 and near 100-degree heat for the next 5 to 7 days.
Part of that is due to a general wetting down of the landscape over
the weekend. Dry soil heats up faster.
We believe that a larger percentage of the Alabama countryside
received over the weekend than in a long time. At Birmingham Airport,
3.04 inches fell Saturday and Saturday night. Many other communities
received over 2 inches, but some areas were left high and dry.
A few other significant rainfall amounts over the weekend include
2.36 inches in Steele, 2.64 at Jordan Dam and 1.66 in Blount Springs.
Helena, in Shelby County, got over 3 inches in the last few days. Up
until that time they had received only 8/10 of an inch all month.
THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Do you ever wonder why people beg for rain
when 71% of the earth's surface is water and only 29% land? But it
happens. Did you also know that the NWS rates droughts like it does
tornadoes and hurricanes? They go from D0 to D4. Down over about the
southern 1/4 of Alabama, the drought is rated as extreme, which is D3.
Here across North-Central Alabama it is a moderate drought,
D1...coldest temperature in the lower 48 states this morning was 46 in
Bradford, Pennsylvania...Sunday's hottest was 125 in Death Valley,
which has become a habit this summer...it was a chilly 43 atop Mt.
LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains this morning.
TROPICAL WEATHER: The nervous weather area over the SW Gulf was
moving north at 5 to 10. Showers and storms over much of the Western
Gulf have increased and better organized. Data buoys have indicated 50
mph gusts this morning. The winds upstairs have become a little more
friendly and a tropical depression could form in the next day or so.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure is an honor to have Dr. John Knox
sitting in my office as I write this. John went to Huffman High School
and went on to great things in the world of meteorology at the
University of Wisconsin and Columbia University. He is now an
Associate Research Scientist at the University of Georgia. Back in the
late 1970s, I did not know that John was listening to me on weather
radio during all those stormy times and he gave me credit for making
him want to follow meteorology as a career. I feel deeply honored.
John will be a guest on our Weather Brains tonight...oh, the perils of
thunder. Little Miss Molly always heads for safe places at the first
sound of thunder. That is where she is now. She has about 5 places in
this house that she considers safe. I will be sure and play a world
series game with her when it is over. Life goes on.
