GOOD AFTERNOON: All week, we have been talking about the prospects of a Gulf low bringing us pretty good chances of precipitation tonight into early Sunday. The low pressure system is there this afternoon, in the northern Gulf, but it is weak. We have been monitoring the two main weather forecasting models all week to see which one would be more correct into prognosticating the amount of precipitation we might experience from this system, with the GFS coming in consistently drier and faster than the NAM model. Indications are that the GFS is going to be the model of choice for this system. In fact, many areas may not get much in the way of precipitation at all. Showers will be more widespread and heavier over South Alabama, with amounts decreasing as you move north.

TONIGHT: As the low moves across the northern Gulf, moisture will spread northward. Parts of South Alabama may see as much as a quarter inch, with lesser amounts over Central Alabama and little or no precipitation over North Alabama.

SNOW THREAT: Earlier, we had talked about a potential snow threat for Northeast Alabama. Thermal profiles appear to be cold enough for snow to fall and not melt before reaching the ground over that part of Alabama. But in order for you to have snow, you have to have moisture, and that looks to be in limited supply for tonight. A little sleet may fall over the Central part of the state, especially at the onset of any precipitation that does fall. A few spots in Northeast Alabama could see a few flakes of snow tonight, but they are not expected to be of any consequence. Still, we will be monitoring the situation throughout the evening and overnight hours to make sure that nothing changes.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Skies should clear on Sunday. Depending on which model you believe, it could be early according to the GFS and later in the day says the NAM. Pick your model, but the truth probably lies somewhere in between. Monday and Tuesday look like dry and cool days. At midweek, our weather will become a bit unsettled again. We will be monitoring the possibility of precipitation in the Wednesday/Thursday time frame. Early morning runs of the GFS do not look impressive and point to just a slight chance of some light rain for us. We will continue to monitor.

ON THIS DATE IN 1903: Conditions were not ideal for spectators on that fateful December day at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but they were ideal for the participants in a grand experiment. Winds of 27 mph with gusts to 35 mph caused the Wright brothers to ignore the brisk 39 degree air temperature and grey, overcast skies as they took to the air in their gas engine powered aircraft. A reenactment commemorated the event on this date in 2003, but the weather did not cooperate. A steady rain and lack of wind made it impossible to get a replica aircraft off the ground in front of thousands of spectators.

...Interesting Forecast...

GOOD MORNING: We will get right to the forecast today, with a couple of interesting storm systems to watch in the days ahead.

INTERESTING FORECAST: The NWS Birmingham noted that we are currently experiencing our 20th coldest December in terms of daytime highs and 13th coldest in terms of overnight lows. With these cold temperatures in place, it is not surprising that we are talking about some interesting forecasts as weather systems move our way. Bob is interesting system number one. Developing low pressure is east of Brownsville, Texas this morning. This low will track eastward across the northern Gulf of Mexico. As it does, it will spread moisture up into Alabama. I won’t be surprised if anyone tells me they experienced a little sleet during the over night hours last night. More sleet may be experienced today, especially on the front end of the advancing rain shield, even with temperatures in the 40s.

A cold rain will overspread the area tonight. Over Northeast Alabama, the atmosphere might be cold enough to support a wintry mix. Indications are that a mix of snow, sleet and rain could fall generally north and east of a line from Athens to Gadsden to Heflin. Temperatures are the surface are expected to remain above freezing, so any frozen precipitation that falls should not accumulate. But bridges and overpasses could become slick tomorrow night.

Sleet could fall as far south as the I-20 corridor tonight.

THE COMING WEEK: Rain will end early Sunday morning with clearing skies. Another storm system will affect Alabama at midweek. Suffice it to say that at this time, there is a chance of frozen precipitation over the Deep South. This weather situation is still a long way from unfolding and we will have plenty of time to study it between now and Wednesday. Lots of coffee in the Weather Office between now and then.

A QUIET WEATHER DAY: If you didn't mind the chill, the weather has been
very quiet across Alabama today. Not so 5 years ago today on December 16,
2000 when a powerful F4 tornado tore through an area south of Tuscaloosa. It
crossed the Moundville highway heavily damaging a Winn-Dixie Store under
construction. Then it continued NE devastating a mobile home park, Eleven
persons died and more than 50 were injured. This tornado was unusual in that
it was televised live on ABC 33/40 from their tower cam. John Oldshue and
his photographer approached the tornado in the 33/40 storm van and ran for
cover into a motel. They barely made it, but the storm van was heavily
damaged.

Another cold morning across Alabama. Some dense fog formed during the night.
This, along with some residual moisture from yesterday's rain, created some
black ice in spots. Here are just a few of the low temperatures this
morning:

20 in Hamilton
21 at Black Creek (NE Etowah County)
22 in Cordova (Union Chapel)
23 at Munford and Alabaster
24 in Oneonta, Talladega and Jasper
25 in Hazel Green, Helena, Fayette, Tuscaloosa
26 in Thorsby and Huntsville

THE WEEK END: Another low pressure area developing over the NW Gulf of
Mexico will spread rain inland Saturday and Sunday. Here in Central Alabama,
the rain may not start until Saturday night or late Saturday afternoon. It
should be mostly over by early Sunday morning. There is a chance there could
be a little wintry precipitation as it ends over NE Alabama. but most areas
will just see rain. No travel problems are anticipated. Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday should be dry.

DID YOU KNOW? That only 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can completely
sweep you off your feet? That is why you should never wade into a flood
zone.

ROAMING: 12 inches of snow on the ground on Newfound Gap in the Smoky
Mountains and 14 inches on Mt. LeConte...other places with a lot of snow: 47
inches at the Vail Ski area in Colorado...coldest in the USA this morning
was 32 below zero at an official station three miles SW of Gunnison,
Colorado...coldest in Alaska was 25 below at Deering.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Great big frost this morning and Little Miss
Molly and I were out just as the sun was coming up. The frost looked like a
light snow, especially across the broad common area near the Old Crow Motel.
With it being silhouetted by the rising sun and the brilliant white frost,
it was truly another Thomas Kinkade scene waiting to be painted. Maybe I
should put away my thermometers and rain gauges and get some canvas and
paint...the walking track is only 30 or 40 feet from our back door. Molly
leapt across that area in only three steps, loping like a kangaroo to try to
avoid letting her feet get in that very cold grass. She looked puzzled at me
because I was laughing so hard. She had her sweater on, but she doesn't have
any boots. Maybe I should get her some for Christmas. Life goes on through
frosts, storms, clear and cloudy.

...More Quick Changes Ahead...

Dry and cool weather headlines our forecast today, with ample sunshine and
highs in the low 50s. But, more changes are ahead for the weekend. Clouds
return tomorrow, and a storm in the northern Gulf of Mexico should bring
rain to much of the state tomorrow night.

The air could be cold enough for a few ice pellets or snow flakes to be
mixed with the rain north of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden), but
temperatures there should generally remain above freezing and we don't
expect any travel problems at this point.

The best chance of rain will come from about 4:00 p.m. tomorrow through 6:00
a.m. Sunday. The sky should become partly sunny during the day Sunday as
drier air arrives.

NEXT WEEK: Yet another weather system will impact Alabama toward the middle
of next week, and could bring the risk of some wintry precipitation to parts
of the deep south Tuesday or Wednesday. Still too early to be specific;
computer model data varies greatly on the storm track and the amount of
moisture available. A quick shot of colder air should follow that system.

CHRISTMAS PREVIEW: At the moment it looks like temperatures will begin to
warm back to normal levels around here by Christmas day as the primary polar
jet stream retreats northward for a while.

ICY MESS: About 450,000 people have no power following yesterday's ice storm
in north Georgia, and the western part of the Carolinas. One man was killed
in Kannapolis, NC when an ice laden tree crashed through his roof. The man
was crushed while he was on a couch in his living room. Greenville and
Spartanburg, SC were especially hard hit by the storm.

MISERABLE WEATHER LEAVING: It was a raw day yesterday and most of today.
Rain ended across the state today and the clouds will be breaking up. The
sun was already shining over part of NW Alabama and skies will be clearing
over the rest of the area tonight.

The last 24 hours has brought one of the most impressive statewide soaking
rains that we have seen in a long time. Feel sure not a single square inch
of Alabama failed to get a good soaking. Cannot mention all of the rainfall,
but here are a few representative totals:

1.67 inches in Huntsville
2.09 in Mobile
1.23 at Birmingham Airport
1.32 in Helena
1.41 at Shelby County Airport
1.50 in Tuscaloosa
1.70 in Jasper
1.37 in Oneonta
0.97 in Greystone Cove
2.20 in Hamilton
1.91 in Livingston

WHAT IS AHEAD? We will get a break from the rain Friday and most of
Saturday. Another low developing over the North Gulf of Mexico will spread
rain northward reaching Central Alabama Saturday night. Most of the rain
will be south of Birmingham. There could be a little sleet mixed in Saturday
night and early Sunday morning. Most of Sunday will be dry as well as
Monday. The latest model runs are backing off on the chance of precipitation
in the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame of next week. However, models are
notorious for changing their mind at the slightest whim that far ahead.

AN ICY EAST: Literally thousands of people were without power today from NE
Georgia northward through Upstate South Carolina and North Carolina. A
Winter Storm Watch even extends as far north as Upper New York State from
this storm system. Numerous trees came crashing to the ground in NE Georgia
and the Carolinas.

SCRATCHING MY HEAD: Can someone explain why "snowstorm" and "thunderstorm"
are single words, but "ice storm" is two words? English teachers?
ROAMING: 30 below zero SW of Gunnison, Colorado was the national low this
morning. They have 11 inches of snow...it was 29 below in Doyleville, Colo.,
and 29 below in Galena, Alaska...81 at Brownsville, Texas was the warm spot
yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure did enjoy a break yesterday to travel to
the Shelby County Airport for the annual Christmas luncheon for NWS
employees and retirees. Got to see some guys I had not seen I a long time.
After working 32 years in that office, one sort of gets permanently
attached. Thanks to James Spann for filling in...with me gone most of the
day, Little Miss Molly walked around looking out the door and windows
wondering where I was. I did not get home until late and, boy, did she
almost take me down. I gave her the usual treat. She is so spoiled about
getting a treat that every time I enter from the garage, even if I just
dashed out to retrieve the garbage can, she expects a treat. Last night she
stuck to me like glue and we played ball and cuddled and loved on the couch.
Many tummy rubs. She is a spoiled little child, but life goes on.

...Rain Moves Out This Morning...

Rain will move out of Alabama this morning as a deepening storm system lifts
northeast. Clouds will linger most of the day, however, keeping temperatures
in the 40s. The clearing process across Alabama should begin late this
afternoon or tonight.

Tomorrow will be a dry day, with amply sunshine and temperatures reaching
the low 50s.

WEEKEND STORM: Yet another storm will form in the northern Gulf of Mexico
this weekend, and promises to bring rain to much of the state late Saturday
and Saturday night. For now it looks any threat of wintry precipitation will
be confined to areas near the Alabama/Tennessee border. And, the
precipitation up that way should be quite light. It looks like the best
chance of rain this weekend will come from about 4:00 p.m. Saturday through
6:00 a.m. Sunday.

A shot of colder air will flow into the state early next week following the
weekend system.

NEXT WEEK: Perhaps the most intriguing storm system will move through here
toward the middle of next week, sometime in the Tuesday-Wednesday time
frame. This has the potential to bring a winter storm threat to parts of the
deep south, but we simply can't define the area with the greatest chance of
wintry precipitation at this point. Temperatures should remain well below

A COLD, SOAKING RAIN: A major storm system will bring lots of rain to
Alabama during the next 18 hours. Most communities will see from one to two
inches of rain, with the heaviest rain coming from about 6:00 this evening
through 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.

This is quite a storm; the maps early this afternoon show a surface low
pressure center along the upper Texas coast, which will deepen rapidly and
move across the northern Gulf of Mexico tonight. In advance, of the system
warm air has surged northward into Louisiana, where New Orleans reported 75
degrees at midday. Severe thunderstorms are possible in this warm sector,
and a tornado watch was issued for the upper Texas coast this morning.
Additional severe storms are likely in coastal areas of Louisiana and
Mississippi this evening.

While some thunder is possible over the southern two-thirds of the state
tonight, any severe weather in Alabama should be limited to Mobile and
Baldwin counties.

THE WEDGE: In stark contrast to the warm sector of this storm, cold air
damming has produced a flow of cold air down the eastern slopes of the
Appalachians. Observations from places in the "wedge" at midday include 39
at Fort Payne, 36 at Athens, GA, and 28 at Asheville, NC. Winter storm
warnings are in effect from the northeast corner of Georgia through the
western part of the Carolinas, and on into much of Pennsylvania.
We will have a break from the wet weather on Friday, but two more systems
are on the way. And, both of them have some potential for wintry weather
across north Alabama. Lets first discuss.

THE WEEKEND STORM: Another storm in the northern Gulf of Mexico will spread
a cold rain into Alabama late Saturday and Saturday night. Model data
suggests there could be a wintry mix of sleet and snow over the northern
quarter of Alabama Saturday night, mainly along and north of U.S. 278. This
is north or a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. But, the deeper
moisture will remain over south Alabama, so the precipitation in the colder
air should be fairly light. And, at this time we expect surface temperatures
to remain a little above freezing Saturday night and early Sunday, which
hopefully will prevent any travel problems. As always, adjustments might
have to be made so stay tuned.

NEXT WEEK'S STORM: Yet another storm system will affect Alabama around the
middle of next week (Tuesday or Wednesday), and in our opinion this one has
the best chance to bring a winter storm threat to some part of the deep
south. Of course, this one is so far away we can't define where the greatest
threat of wintry precipitation will come, or the storm will be strong enough
for travel disruptions. You know the routine, stay tuned.

ROAMING: Coldest spot in the "lower 48" this morning was Saranac Lake, NY
with -24. Alaska's cold spot was Galena with -29. Yesterday's high in
Fairbanks was a toasty six degrees below zero. -James Spann (J.B.
Elliott returns tomorrow!)

...A Cold Soaking Rain Ahead...

We are forecasting three distinct storm systems for Alabama over the next 7
days. The first one will bring a cold, soaking rain beginning this
afternoon. The rain will be widespread tonight before tapering off tomorrow
morning. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are likely for most Alabama
communities. Temperatures will be in the 40s, so there will be no icing
problems.

SECOND STORM: After a break in the action on Friday, storm number two rolls
in here over the weekend. This one should bring mostly light rain to the
state, with the most significant rain over the southern half. There could be
enough cold air for a few snow flakes Saturday night or early Sunday morning
on the northern periphery of the precipitation. This would be over the
northern quarter of the state, but for now the moisture looks too limited
there for any big winter weather problems. A nice shot of cold air follows
this storm early next week.

NUMBER THREE: This one is due in here Tuesday of Wednesday of next week, and
could be the biggie. In fact, this one has the potential to bring a winter
storm threat to parts of the deep south, including Alabama. Needless to say,
at this phase of the game we won't even try to get specific. But, the
pattern sure favors a winter storm developing over the Gulf of Mexico, then
rolling up the Atlantic seaboard. All we can do for now is say "stay tuned".

WE NEED THE RAIN: Birmingham's rain deficit for 2005 is 4.68". Unlikely we
can make up that entire amount during the next 17 days.

ROAMING: Freezing rain could bring significant icing today from the western
Carolinas northward through Virginia and into central Pennsylvania.

A BIG RAIN EVENT: Looks like some parts of Alabama could get between 1 and 2
inches of rain in the next 24 to 48 hours. Specifically we expect the rain
to start here in Central Alabama by midday Wednesday and then become
widespread Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. It is going to be a cold
rain, but not cold enough to present us with a threat of wintry
precipitation. At one time it looked like the dreaded "wedge" would cause
some colder air to move west into Alabama from Georgia and possibly give the
eastern counties a threat of wintry precipitation. That threat seems to have
diminished considerably. The rain should end by midday Thursday.

Causing the rain will be a low pressure area that will form over the North
Gulf of Mexico and move toward the NE. By Thursday morning, the low should
be along the Mississippi coast. Down in SW Alabama, there may be some
thunderstorms involved.

Friday should be dry. Clouds will increase again on Saturday with rain
starting again later in the day. It should be ending Sunday morning. There
is an outside chance of a few flurries over extreme North Alabama as the
rain tapers off Sunday morning.

IT CAN GET COLD IN DECEMBER: 43 years ago this morning the temperature was
1 above zero in Birmingham. During that very cold time the high on one day
was only 13-the lowest daytime high on record. In neighboring Georgia, it
was the coldest December weather of the 20th Century and there was millions
of dollars damage to Georgia crops.

ROAMING: Those snow showers over East Tennessee yesterday left 2 inches of
snow on Newfound Gap and 4 inches on Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains. The
low on Mt. LeConte this morning was 8...coldest temperatures in the USA this
morning included 22 below at Watertown, New York; 17 below at Saranac Lake
and 24 below at Kaltag, Alaska...yesterday's warmest was 76 in Laredo.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I try to avoid eye contact with Little Miss
Molly when I am extremely busy because those bright eyes can make me do
anything she wishes. We were both in the office for much of this morning and
I noticed that she curled up in the only little patch of sunlight coming
through the front door. She was also looking in the office right at me
almost continuously. Did not realize until late morning that we had not
opened the blinds in the living area. That is a no-no for Molly. As soon as
she takes her morning walk and has her treat, she goes on community watch.
Often she is perched on the back of the couch where she can see out of five
windows. She is guarding against all those 1,000-pound dogs, 3-ton rhinos
and 5-ton elephants invading her private territory. She especially doesn't
like for other dogs to come into her backyard and use it as a bathroom. Only
exception is Jo-Jo who she is still deeply in love with. Life goes on.

...One more dry day for Alabama...

We will continue to highlight dry and cool weather for Alabama today, but
clouds will increase tonight in advance of a storm system coming along in
the southern branch of the jet stream. Rain will become widespread by
tomorrow afternoon statewide.

And, as the rain moves in from the southwest, cold air will try to slip in
here from the northeast thanks to the dreaded "wedge" effect. The wedge
should set up a nasty ice storm for the western part of the Carolinas, with
icing possible down into northeast Georgia.

For now we expect just a cold, soaking rain for Alabama tomorrow afternoon
and tomorrow night. Temperatures will most likely range from the upper 30s
near the Georgia border to the low 50s near the Mississippi border as the
rain falls. Amounts around one inch are likely, with locally heavier amounts
before the rain tapers off early Thursday morning.

WEEKEND PEEK: After a dry day on Friday, looks like another Gulf of Mexico
storm system will impact Alabama over the weekend. Colder air will filter
southward at the same time, and parts of the deep south could be dealing
with their first winter storm threat of the season.
At the moment, it appears the best chance of snow or ice will be along and
north of U.S. 278 Saturday night and Sunday morning (north of a line from
Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). Of course, this is very preliminary and
will most likely change in coming days. Stay tuned.

COLD BLAST: There is considerable model uncertainty about the potential for
another storm early next week, but good agreement over a shot of very cold
air that will arrive here in the December 20-22 time frame.

DECEMBER ALWAYS INTERESTING: In fact, the whole winter season becomes a
challenge to forecast weather. I guess that is what makes it so interesting
because it does not stay the same very long.

We have some more changes coming up, mainly at midweek. Everything is
pointing to a good rain event Wednesday into early Thursday with some colder
air trying to run the stop sign and come in from Georgia. There could be a
slight risk of some frozen precipitation over extreme East Alabama. We
think, however, it will be mostly rain. We will have to keep one of our eyes
pointed east.

Looks like much of Central Alabama will easily get an inch of rain out of
this event. Since our deficiency for the year is over 4 inches, we cannot
complain about that. After the rain gets out of the way later Thursday, it
looks like more dry weather for Friday. We do not see any extremely cold
temperatures this week as you can tell by our day-by-day forecast.

ICE SITUATION FOR NORTH GEORGIA? The NWS, Atlanta issued a statement to
that effect due to the pesky old wedge. As a low pressure area moves across
the Northern Gulf of Mexico by midweek rain will start in Georgia Wednesday
morning and continue Wednesday night. It may be near or just below freezing
in North Georgia when the rain starts. So, there could be some freezing rain
or sleet mixed in north of the Carrollton-Atlanta-Warrenton line.
Significant amounts of sleet and freezing rain could accumulate in the
mountains of NE Georgia.

ROAMING: Snow showers over NE Tennessee this afternoon could put down a 1
to 2-inch blanket of snow in places like Mountain City and Roan Mountain.
Places like Western North Carolina may be in for a wintry threat at midweek
also...coldest in Alaska this morning was 25 below at Deadhorse. Did you
know that they once had to shoot a bear roaming around the hallways on the
second floor of the only hotel in Deadhorse?...down here where the 48 states
touch each other, the low this morning was 22 below in Doyelsville,
Colorado...on this date in 1988, record cold for so early in Upstate New
York with 12 below zero at Albany and 28 below at Saranac Lake.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is a creature of habit and
she does not like her routine interrupted too much. Every morning when we
get
back from our first half-mile walk, she hops on the back of the couch with
every single inch of her body wiggling in excitement awaiting her treat. She
will not eat the treat on the kitchen tile floor. She takes it to a certain
spot on the carpeted living area, curls up and enjoys it to the fullest.
After that, it is one of two things: she either demands a ballgame with me
or she goes to a spot near the front door where the sun is beaming in and
curls up for a long nap in the sunlight. Her routine was really messed up
last night when we put up the Christmas tree. She headed for one of her
three storm-safe spots till we finished! Life goes on.

...Watch out for the Wedge...

GOOD MORNING: From time to time you hear us talking about the dreaded
wedge. We will be talking about it this week, and it will have an impact on
our midweek forecast.

TODAY/TUESDAY: An upper level disturbance will bring a few clouds to parts
of the area today. Temperatures will run a degree or two warmer than
yesterday, topping out in the lower 50s. Tonight, under clear skies,
readings will fall into the lower 30s, dropping below freezing in a few
locations. High pressure will be in control of Alabama's weather tomorrow,
with mostly sunny skies. Clouds should increase during the overnight hours
ahead of our next storm system.

WEDNESDAY: By Wednesday morning, low pressure will be approaching Alabama
from the west or southwest. Clouds will quickly overspread the area during
the early morning hours. Rain will follow later in the day. At the same
time, high pressure to the northeast of Alabama will send cold air in from
the east, the dreaded wedge. If the wedge is strong, temperatures will not
get out of the 30s in East Alabama all day on Wednesday. This cold air
could set up an interesting situation over eastern sections of the state.
Right now, it looks like the precipitation will be all liquid, but be aware
that if the wedge is stronger than anticipated and a shallow layer of cold
air sets up over East Alabama, that could change. Stay tuned.

BEYOND MIDWEEK: More cold air will follow this midweek system, with
precipitation ending Thursday from west to east. A similar situation sets
up for the weekend with a cold wedge and another low bringing precipitation
to the South. Look for a cold rain all day Saturday. We will watch for the
chance of wintry precipitation from this system also.

ON THIS DATE IN 1962: Citrus growers in Florida experienced their worst
freeze of the century as temperatures dropped to as low as 12F. When
temperatures reach 28F, ice crystals begin to form inside the fruit. Citrus
production was cut nearly half in the following year. Over two million
trees were killed by the freeze.

GOOD AFTERNOON: A sunny, cool day is in progress across Alabama on this
December 11th. Temperatures are heading toward highs around 50 degrees in
most locations. Satellite photos show clouds covering much of Tennessee and
Southeast Missouri. The layer of rather thick stratus clouds thins a bit
and becomes a deck of stratocumulus clouds over southern Tennessee,
extending down into the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama. The clouds,
associated with an upper level trough, will affect mainly northeast Alabama
this afternoon and evening. Lows tonight will drop into the middle 30s in
most locations. Monday will see Alabama continuing in a northwesterly flow
aloft, thanks to the large trough of low pressure. Patches of clouds will
occur again tomorrow as a disturbances swings through the bottom of the big
trough. High temperatures tomorrow will warm back into the lower 50s
again. Under clear skies and calm winds, temperatures will fall below
freezing across the area Monday night.

NEXT STORM SYSTEM: Tuesday looks to be a nice day, with a good deal of
sunshine and mild temperatures that are just a hair below normal for this
time of year. Clouds should increase rapidly Tuesday night with some
precipitation reaching West and Northwest Alabama toward morning on
Wednesday. It could start out as a little sleet, but temperatures are
expected to remain above freezing and problems are not expected. Rain
should overspread the area and last much of the day and through the
overnight as low pressure moves out of the Gulf and to the northeast.

THURSDAY AND BEYOND: Thursday will dawn cloudy and raw with a little light
rain before precipitation ends from west to east. Skies should slowly clear
during the day. Friday looks like it will be a partly cloudy day, with
highs in the 50s. Moisture levels and clouds should begin to increase
Friday night, with showers breaking out by Saturday morning over western
sections. This will be the beginning of what may turn out to be a wet
weekend.

THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG: After the Battle of Antietam in September
1862, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and replaced
General George McClellan as the commander of the Army of the Potomac. In
his place, Lincoln chose General Ambrose Burnside. Burnside did not feel he
was up to the task, and tried to refuse the commission. He wanted to take
Fredericksburg, fifty miles from Washington, and use that victory to next
take Richmond, just fifty miles further. Taking position across the
Rappahannock River from the picturesque town, he lost the element of
surprise by waiting on pontoon
bridges to arrive.

On the morning of December 11, 1862, Burnside used the cover of thick fog to
get his combat engineers started building the pontoons across the 400 foot
wide, ice covered river in front of the city. As the fog lifted,
Confederate sharpshooters had a field day picking off the vulnerable
engineers. But by day's end, the bridges were built and the Union troops
moved across the next day, taking the town. But the intense fighting on the
13th would be some of the bloodiest of the war as Union soldiers tried
valiantly all day long to dislodge well-entrenched rebel positions along
Mayre's Heights, overlooking the city. Burnside lost 12,653 men to Robert
E. Lee's 4,201. Morale in the North sunk even lower.

...December Chill Continues...

GOOD MORNING! A trough of low pressure is pinwheeling across the area on
this December Sunday. This deepening trough will push rapidly to the east
and northeast later today. It will deliver a glancing, reinforcing shot of
cold air to Alabama and the Deep South. Clouds affiliated with the trough
will give us partly to mostly cloudy skies this morning, with clouds
thinning during the day. Temperatures will rise into the upper 40s today,
depending on cloud cover and sunshine. It will be a bit on the breezy side
today, with northwesterly winds averaging 7-14 mph. Another piece of upper
level energy will temporarily increase clouds across the northern part of
the state tonight. Readings tonight will bottom out around 30 degrees.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: The new week will start off with partly to mostly cloudy
skies, but those clouds will be thinning during the day. Temperatures will
warm a couple of degrees on Monday as compared to today. Tuesday should
feature a good deal of sunshine through high clouds, with near normal
temperatures. Winds will shift around to the southeast around high pressure
to the east of Alabama. This will send moisture levels soaring.

MIDWEEK RAINS: Low pressure to the west of Alabama will be spreading into
western sections of the state by Wednesday morning. An area of showers will
push across the state during the day. Showers will end by Thursday morning,
with clearing during the day on the back of a northerly wind.

TROPICS: These words were music to my ears today. There are no tropical
cyclones in the Atlantic at this time.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: If you have drived up I-75 in eastern Tennessee, you

Tennessee, dropping the visibility along a three-mile stretch of I-75 to
zero. Twelve people were killed in a massive 83-vehicle wreck.
