A QUIET WEATHER DAY: If you didn't mind the chill, the weather has been
very quiet across Alabama today. Not so 5 years ago today on December 16,
2000 when a powerful F4 tornado tore through an area south of Tuscaloosa. It
crossed the Moundville highway heavily damaging a Winn-Dixie Store under
construction. Then it continued NE devastating a mobile home park, Eleven
persons died and more than 50 were injured. This tornado was unusual in that
it was televised live on ABC 33/40 from their tower cam. John Oldshue and
his photographer approached the tornado in the 33/40 storm van and ran for
cover into a motel. They barely made it, but the storm van was heavily
damaged.
Another cold morning across Alabama. Some dense fog formed during the night.
This, along with some residual moisture from yesterday's rain, created some
black ice in spots. Here are just a few of the low temperatures this
morning:
20 in Hamilton
21 at Black Creek (NE Etowah County)
22 in Cordova (Union Chapel)
23 at Munford and Alabaster
24 in Oneonta, Talladega and Jasper
25 in Hazel Green, Helena, Fayette, Tuscaloosa
26 in Thorsby and Huntsville
THE WEEK END: Another low pressure area developing over the NW Gulf of
Mexico will spread rain inland Saturday and Sunday. Here in Central Alabama,
the rain may not start until Saturday night or late Saturday afternoon. It
should be mostly over by early Sunday morning. There is a chance there could
be a little wintry precipitation as it ends over NE Alabama. but most areas
will just see rain. No travel problems are anticipated. Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday should be dry.
DID YOU KNOW? That only 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can completely
sweep you off your feet? That is why you should never wade into a flood
zone.
ROAMING: 12 inches of snow on the ground on Newfound Gap in the Smoky
Mountains and 14 inches on Mt. LeConte...other places with a lot of snow: 47
inches at the Vail Ski area in Colorado...coldest in the USA this morning
was 32 below zero at an official station three miles SW of Gunnison,
Colorado...coldest in Alaska was 25 below at Deering.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Great big frost this morning and Little Miss
Molly and I were out just as the sun was coming up. The frost looked like a
light snow, especially across the broad common area near the Old Crow Motel.
With it being silhouetted by the rising sun and the brilliant white frost,
it was truly another Thomas Kinkade scene waiting to be painted. Maybe I
should put away my thermometers and rain gauges and get some canvas and
paint...the walking track is only 30 or 40 feet from our back door. Molly
leapt across that area in only three steps, loping like a kangaroo to try to
avoid letting her feet get in that very cold grass. She looked puzzled at me
because I was laughing so hard. She had her sweater on, but she doesn't have
any boots. Maybe I should get her some for Christmas. Life goes on through
frosts, storms, clear and cloudy.
