MISERABLE WEATHER LEAVING: It was a raw day yesterday and most of today.
Rain ended across the state today and the clouds will be breaking up. The
sun was already shining over part of NW Alabama and skies will be clearing
over the rest of the area tonight.
The last 24 hours has brought one of the most impressive statewide soaking
rains that we have seen in a long time. Feel sure not a single square inch
of Alabama failed to get a good soaking. Cannot mention all of the rainfall,
but here are a few representative totals:
1.67 inches in Huntsville
2.09 in Mobile
1.23 at Birmingham Airport
1.32 in Helena
1.41 at Shelby County Airport
1.50 in Tuscaloosa
1.70 in Jasper
1.37 in Oneonta
0.97 in Greystone Cove
2.20 in Hamilton
1.91 in Livingston
WHAT IS AHEAD? We will get a break from the rain Friday and most of
Saturday. Another low developing over the North Gulf of Mexico will spread
rain northward reaching Central Alabama Saturday night. Most of the rain
will be south of Birmingham. There could be a little sleet mixed in Saturday
night and early Sunday morning. Most of Sunday will be dry as well as
Monday. The latest model runs are backing off on the chance of precipitation
in the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame of next week. However, models are
notorious for changing their mind at the slightest whim that far ahead.
AN ICY EAST: Literally thousands of people were without power today from NE
Georgia northward through Upstate South Carolina and North Carolina. A
Winter Storm Watch even extends as far north as Upper New York State from
this storm system. Numerous trees came crashing to the ground in NE Georgia
and the Carolinas.
SCRATCHING MY HEAD: Can someone explain why "snowstorm" and "thunderstorm"
are single words, but "ice storm" is two words? English teachers?
ROAMING: 30 below zero SW of Gunnison, Colorado was the national low this
morning. They have 11 inches of snow...it was 29 below in Doyleville, Colo.,
and 29 below in Galena, Alaska...81 at Brownsville, Texas was the warm spot
yesterday.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure did enjoy a break yesterday to travel to
the Shelby County Airport for the annual Christmas luncheon for NWS
employees and retirees. Got to see some guys I had not seen I a long time.
After working 32 years in that office, one sort of gets permanently
attached. Thanks to James Spann for filling in...with me gone most of the
day, Little Miss Molly walked around looking out the door and windows
wondering where I was. I did not get home until late and, boy, did she
almost take me down. I gave her the usual treat. She is so spoiled about
getting a treat that every time I enter from the garage, even if I just
dashed out to retrieve the garbage can, she expects a treat. Last night she
stuck to me like glue and we played ball and cuddled and loved on the couch.
Many tummy rubs. She is a spoiled little child, but life goes on.
