GOOD AFTERNOON: All week, we have been talking about the prospects of a Gulf low bringing us pretty good chances of precipitation tonight into early Sunday. The low pressure system is there this afternoon, in the northern Gulf, but it is weak. We have been monitoring the two main weather forecasting models all week to see which one would be more correct into prognosticating the amount of precipitation we might experience from this system, with the GFS coming in consistently drier and faster than the NAM model. Indications are that the GFS is going to be the model of choice for this system. In fact, many areas may not get much in the way of precipitation at all. Showers will be more widespread and heavier over South Alabama, with amounts decreasing as you move north.

TONIGHT: As the low moves across the northern Gulf, moisture will spread northward. Parts of South Alabama may see as much as a quarter inch, with lesser amounts over Central Alabama and little or no precipitation over North Alabama.

SNOW THREAT: Earlier, we had talked about a potential snow threat for Northeast Alabama. Thermal profiles appear to be cold enough for snow to fall and not melt before reaching the ground over that part of Alabama. But in order for you to have snow, you have to have moisture, and that looks to be in limited supply for tonight. A little sleet may fall over the Central part of the state, especially at the onset of any precipitation that does fall. A few spots in Northeast Alabama could see a few flakes of snow tonight, but they are not expected to be of any consequence. Still, we will be monitoring the situation throughout the evening and overnight hours to make sure that nothing changes.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Skies should clear on Sunday. Depending on which model you believe, it could be early according to the GFS and later in the day says the NAM. Pick your model, but the truth probably lies somewhere in between. Monday and Tuesday look like dry and cool days. At midweek, our weather will become a bit unsettled again. We will be monitoring the possibility of precipitation in the Wednesday/Thursday time frame. Early morning runs of the GFS do not look impressive and point to just a slight chance of some light rain for us. We will continue to monitor.

ON THIS DATE IN 1903: Conditions were not ideal for spectators on that fateful December day at Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but they were ideal for the participants in a grand experiment. Winds of 27 mph with gusts to 35 mph caused the Wright brothers to ignore the brisk 39 degree air temperature and grey, overcast skies as they took to the air in their gas engine powered aircraft. A reenactment commemorated the event on this date in 2003, but the weather did not cooperate. A steady rain and lack of wind made it impossible to get a replica aircraft off the ground in front of thousands of spectators.
