...Showers For Labor Day?...

Looks like we may gave to renege on a promise of great weather for Labor Day. Sorry about that. Fortunately, the day won’t be a total washout, but we will deal with increasing chances of showers and storms, especially as we move into the overnight hours through Tuesday morning.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Today should be pretty much a carbon copy of yesterday with partly cloudy skies and just a few isolated storms developing, most likely near low pressure over eastern Alabama. Temperatures should rise into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees once again.

MONDAY: Labor Day should be partly cloudy and warm once again, but there will be increasing chances of showers, especially overnight. In actuality, the rain chances will only be about one in five through sundown, and I imagine most everyone will have finished their outdoor activities by then. The rain chances should peak between midnight and sunup on Tuesday. Rain chances will be with us through at least part of the day on Tuesday as the front moves on through Saturday or Sunday.

TROPICAL TROUBLE?: There are three significant disturbances in the tropical Atlantic. The first is a disturbance in the eastern Caribbean. It passed through the Windward Islands yesterday. It does not look like a potential problem at this time. The second is tropical wave about 1,000 miles east of the islands this morning. It is expected to continue on a west northwest course, passing north of the islands and approaching the Bahamas by late in the week. How strong it will be is a question that may depend partially on system number three and interaction with the islands of the Greater Antilles. System number three is a flare up about 900 miles west of the African coast. This system shows the potential to undergo slow development over the next few days as it moves west northwest and a little more northwest in tandem with disturbance number two. The GFS predicts this will become the dominant storm, and develops a fairly strong hurricane out of it. It could threaten the East Coast. The second disturbance could be a candidate to enter the southeastern Gulf out at about Day Nine or Ten. Stay tuned.

ON THIS DATE IN 1821: The only hurricane to ever strike present day New York City made landfall near the location of Kennedy Airport.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: Coffeyville, Kansas is struck by a hailstorm that dumps a hailstone weighing 1.67 pounds and measuring 17.5 inches in circumference. It would be the largest ever recorded in the United States until 2003, when a larger stone fell near Aurora, KS.

...Dry Holiday...

Spent the morning watching all of the documentaries and specials that I had
TIVOd from the past week on Hurricane Katrina. C-SPAN ran four hours of
excellent coverage of a panel of authors from New Orleans on the anniversary
of the storm and a February function at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
where contributing photographers from the Dallas Morning News book “Eyes of
the Storm.” The morning brought back lots of powerful emotions.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: The remnants of Ernesto are centered over northern
Virginia today, very near Washington, D.C. Heavy rain covers much of western
New York and Pennsylvania with lighter rains from southeastern Michigan
through much of New England. Numerous Flash Flood Watches are in effect
over a wide area, along with High Wind Warnings. The low will slowly lift
into New England over the next 48 hours. Across Alabama, a weak surface
boundary continues across the middle of the state with a trough over eastern
sections. A few showers and thunderstorms will develop today and Sunday in
the vicinity of this front and trough. They were already popping up on the
radar at the noon hour. Expect more of the same on Sunday.

LABOR DAY AND BEYOND: More generally isolated storms will continue on
Monday, with rain chances hovering at about one in five. Temperatures will
edge up just a bit on Monday, topping out in the upper 80s to near 90. So
all in all, the holiday should be an enjoyable one for outdoor activities.
A frontal system will approach the area on Tuesday as a larger upper trough
and bowling ball upper low sweeps our way. This will mean an increased
chance of rain for Tuesday into early Wednesday. Dry and pleasant weather
should continue for the rest of the week in the wake of the front.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Most businesses in the downtown area of Ladysmith, WI
were closed for Labor Day. The area was under a Moderate Risk outlook and
Severe Thunderstorm Watch. At 3:54 p.m., the National Weather Service in
the Twin Cities issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Rusk County
including Ladysmith. The warning was based on radar indications of a severe
thunderstorm about 14 miles west of the town of 3900 people. As the
thunderstorm passed over storm spotters west of the town, it did not look
like it was going to produce a tornado. At 4:20, the thunderstorm spawned a
tornado that first touched down about 1 ½ miles west of Ladysmith. A town
police officer spotted the tornado as it entered the town limits. As the
tornado roared directly through the heart of downtown, it produced F2 and F3
damage. 150 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Damage totaled $10
million. Fortunately no one was killed. It could have been much worse. On
a normal Monday, the downtown area would have been crowded with shoppers.
The tornado tracked directly along US-8, the main drag through town, heavily
damaging a 4 by 16 block area.

...Cooler Days Ahead...

We can thank Ernesto for our fine weather this Labor Day weekend. The storm
is heading toward Canada this morning, but not before bringing some
impressive rainfall amounts and high winds to the Mid-Atlantic. A dry
northerly flow on the back of the big low pressure system is funneling
relatively cool, dry air into the Southeast.

LOOKING FORWARD TO LABOR DAY: Not much change is expected through Sunday
with just partly cloudy skies. Humidities will be relatively low. We will
reintroduce a slight chance of an afternoon shower or storm on Labor Day,
but the probabilities will be very small. A new cold front will approach on
Tuesday. Rain chances will increase by that time, continuing into Wednesday.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: UAB travels to Norman to take on the Boomer Sooners of
Oklahoma. There is slight chance of a storm during the game. Temperatures
will be in the 80s. Auburn and Alabama both have home openers tonight.
Skies should be partly cloudy with temperatures dropping into the 70s during
the game.

HURRICANE JOHN: Cabo San Lucas was visited by a once powerful hurricane
last night. The mountainous terrain of Baja California will knock the storm
down considerably. Moisture from the system will be drawn up into the
Southwest United States.

ATLANTIC ACTIVITY: Our quiet Atlantic season continues as Ernesto exits
stage right. There is nothing really significant in the Atlantic except for
a wave in the middle of the ocean between Africa and the Windward Islands.
It has some potential for development. All of the experts are downgrading
their projected counts for the year. That's good news.

RECORD BIN 95 in Fort Lauderdale and Miami on Friday were both records for
the date. Friday was the wettest day ever at Norfolk, VA, as 8.93 inches
of rain fell.

ON THIS DATE IN 1666: It had been an intensely hot summer in London. A dry
northeast wind had blown most of the summer thanks to persistent high
pressure over northern Europe. The city's wooden houses were tinder dry.
The threat of fire was far from the minds of most Londoners. They more
concerned about a possible attack by the Dutch, since England was at war. A
small fire broke out on this date. Fanned by strong winds, it spread
rapidly. The fire burned out of control for three days. Finally, the
northeast wind ceased on September 5th, but the fire kept on burning for
four more days. The rains arrived on September 9th to completely extinguish
the blazes. The final toll was 13,200 houses damaged. Nearly 100,000 of
the city's 600,000 residents were homeless. Amazingly, only four people
died. London would be rebuilt with stone and brick buildings.

...Cooler Days Ahead...

Time to sail into the Labor Day holiday weekend. Temperatures will be
pleasant, and the chance of rain for any spot is so small is really isn't
worth the mention in our formal forecast. We will continue to forecast highs
in the 80s and lows in the 60s, not too far from normal levels for early
September in Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Fall must be getting close; this is opening weekend for
both high school and college football here in Alabama. For the high school
games tonight, the sky will be mostly fair; temperatures will be around 80
degrees at kickoff time, with the mercury falling through the 70s during the
game.
Alabama hosts Hawaii tomorrow night at the newly expanded Bryant-Denny
Stadium in Tuscaloosa; the game will kick off shortly after 6:00 with a
clear sky. The kickoff temperature will be about 85, falling into the upper
70s by the end of the game. Auburn will host Washington State. When that
game kicks off at 6:45 at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the sky should be fair with a
temperature near 80, falling into the low to mid 70s by the fourth quarter.
UAB will be on the road; they will take on the Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma
Memorial Stadium in Norman (6:00 p.m. kickoff). The sky will be mostly
cloudy, and a passing shower or storm will be possible, mainly during the
first half. At kickoff the temperature will be near 78 degrees, falling into
the mid 70s during the game.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Ernesto moved into the southern North Carolina coast last
night, and will be moving northward today bring the risk of heavy rain and
flash flooding to parts of North Carolina, Virginia, and the middle Atlantic
coast region (including Washington, D.C.). The system will slowly wind down
as it continues to move over land.

In the eastern Pacific, Hurricane John, a category two storm packing
sustained winds of 105 mph, and will pass over the southern tip of Baja
California today. A hurricane warning remains in effect for Cabo San Lucas.

And, out in the central Pacific, Super Typhoon Ioke continue to pack
sustained winds of 155 mph with gusts to 190 mph. Ioke passed almost
directly over Wake Island yesterday. According to press reports there was a
storm surge of 40 feet. The highest elevation on Wake is only 20 feet so the
results are obvious.

And, in the eastern Atlantic, a tropical wave about 800 miles west/southwest
of the Cape Verde Islands is becoming better organized as it moves to the
west/northwest.

ATLANTA SOAKED: Atlanta's rain total yesterday was 4.30", with some flooding
in parts of the city.

THE EXTREME HEAT IS GONE—HUMIDITY DROPPING: It is a nice combination
to see the old thermometer back off a few degrees and the dew point
dropping, which means lower humidity. This afternoon the drier air is
slowly pushing into the state. By morning, lows across Central Alabama
will be in the mid 60s. That is also the story all the way through
Monday. Highs each day will be between 86 and 88. That is quite a
relief from the long hot summer that we have experienced.

WHAT ABOUT RAIN? While there is a remote chance a shower could pop
up tomorrow, we did not include it in the forecast because it is not
worth mentioning. We look for dry weather to continue through the
weekend. As another frontal system gets closer to the state on Labor
Day, there could be an isolated afternoon shower or storm. Most
picnics will stay dry.

THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ernesto was going to make landfall
somewhere near the North Carolina-South Carolina border later this
afternoon and he could possibly be a minimal hurricane at the time. He
intensified over the warmer Atlantic waters after he moved off shore
late yesterday. Rain will be the main problem as he goes inland and
continues northward. 4 to 8 inches of rain is expected from Coastal
South Carolina northward through the Mid-Atlantic States, the Southern
and Central Appalachians. After getting inland, he will become a
tropical depression again and may reach SW Pennsylvania by the
weekend.

Way out in the Pacific, super Typhoon Ioke hit Wake Island earlier
today with sustained winds near 155 mph and a 40-foot storm surge. The
highest elevation on the island is only 20 feet, so the destruction is
probably widespread.

SIGNS OF THE SEASON: 17 degrees this morning at the northernmost
weather station in North America, Alert, Canada. That is the coldest I
have seen since last spring…in the lower 48 USA, some notable low
temperatures this morning also included 19 in Stanley, Idaho, 20 in
Foster Flat, Oregon and West Yellowstone, Montana, and 24 at
Fairfield, Idaho…hottest yesterday was 118 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Melissa Smith, Tuscaloosa, reports that
Munchkin is still missing. An extensive search has been underway near
Montclair and other areas for days and there was a nice story on TV a
few nights ago. There have been some sightings, but they proved to be
false. Cannot imagine what I would do if Little Miss Molly came up
missing. Do not think I could take it. Sure had a nice walk with her
earlier this morning. It contrasted to yesterday when it was
rush-rush-rush. Today she took her time. We finally got around to
having a great ballgame late last night. She and I both went to bed
totally exhausted. Life goes on.....

...Cooler Days Ahead...

This morning a slow moving cold front continues to push across the central
part of Alabama. Cooler and drier will continue to filter into the northern
part of the state, and most communities around here fill see a high in the
mid to upper 80s. In fact, we don't expect any widespread 90 degree heat for
the next seven days, and possibly longer, as the upper air pattern continues
to change over North America. Nights will also be cooler; temperatures will
drop into the 60s during the early morning hours through the weekend and
into early next week. In addition to being cooler, the weather pattern will
be drier in coming days. We will hang on to a small risk of a shower today
and tomorrow since an upper air trough remains west of the state, but with
only limited moisture most places will stay dry.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: For now the holiday weekend looks nice, with ample
sunshine on a daily basis and relatively comfortable temperatures for early
September. The pleasant weather should hold through Monday.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? The weather looks excellent for the high
school football games across the state both tonight and tomorrow night; the
sky will be mostly fair with low 80s at kickoff, then temperatures will fall
into the 70s during the games. Pretty much the same story for the Alabama
and Auburn opening games Saturday night.

ERNESTO was downgraded to a tropical depression yesterday while over
southern Florida. The system should become a tropical storm today as it
moves over the Atlantic; landfall will come late this afternoon or tonight
north of Charleston, South Carolina. Then, the circulation center will move
northward through North Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The main
threat will be heavy rain and flash flooding; some spots could receive over
five inches along the track of Ernesto during the next few days.

The rest of the Atlantic basin for now is fairly quiet.

In the Pacific, Super Typhoon Ioke has maintained its strength and will slam
into Wake Island today with sustained winds of 155 mph, and gusts to almost

scientific outpost and a midpoint air base for Air Force jets flying across
the Pacific Ocean. The entire island has been evacuated.

Hurricane John is in the eastern Pacific and will scoot by the southern tip
of Baja California today as it turns to the west; top winds are near 135
mph, making it a category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

for the next several days. This afternoon scattered thunderstorms were
developing over Central and South Alabama. By tomorrow, however, they
should become scarce. On Friday, the risk should still be very small.
We think Saturday should be mostly sunshine and dry with pleasant
morning temperatures. Another frontal boundary early next week could
bring some low temperatures in the mid 60s for several days in a row.
Just think, September will be here Friday. For some reason, September
and especially October psychologically sounds cooler. I like October.
I wish my parents had named me James October Elliott instead of James
Benjamin.

Storms yesterday and last night dumped around 1 inch of rain on
Montgomery and Gadsden, over ½ inch at Carbon Hill and Decatur. It is
likely that parts of Hale County received over 2 inches, although we
do not have any specific reports.

TROPICS ON A RAMPAGE: Not Ernesto, mind you, but over on the Pacific
side. Powerful Hurricane John was moving NW getting close to the
Pacific coast of Mexico. He is a category 4. Way out in the Pacific,
Typhoon Ioke was a category 5 and Wake Island is directly in his path.
The typhoon is expected to cause major damage to the island and a huge
storm surge may inundate the entire island. It has been evacuated.
Meanwhile, back in the USA, Ernesto was downgraded to a tropical
depression this morning over South Florida. The track forecast still
calls for him to move off shore off the East-Central Florida coast and
move over open waters of the Atlantic to make another landfall on the
South Carolina coast later tomorrow. Rainfall amounts and winds have
been less than earlier expected since he left Cuba. The rugged
mountains in Eastern Cuba really discouraged him.

THIS WILL COOL YOU OFF: Even though spring is approaching down in
the Antarctic, it was 107 below zero today at Vostok. It is expected
to drop further to117 below with enough wind to produce a wind chill
of 152 below…it was 270 degrees hotter than that yesterday in Death
Valley with 120…lowest in the lower 48 this morning was 36 on the west
side of Yellowstone Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Miss Molly and I talk to each other.
She talks to me with her eyes, ears and tail and I talk to her with
belly rubs, head scratches and certain words. She took me around the
track in a hurry this morning. I guess all dogs are that way, but when
Molly is in a hurry, her front legs look like a rapidly-trotting
horse, which at the same time her back legs are in unison like a
kangaroo leaping across the Australian outback. I tried that, but it
does not work for me. Life goes on.

Today a cold front will slowly push through North Alabama, meaning a
continued opportunity for scattered showers and thunderstorms for most
communities. By afternoon, we expect the showers and storms to be most
numerous south of I-20 as the front continues to push south. Drier air will
begin to enter the northern counties of the state, and most of Alabama will
be in that drier air tomorrow and Friday. Accordingly, the chance of rain
for the final two days of the workweek looks pretty small.

Temperatures will be trending downward; in fact if our forecast package is
correct, most places around here will remain below the 90 degree mark for
the next five to seven days. By the weekend early morning temperatures
should drop into the mid 60s. Maybe even some low 60s for the cooler valleys
of North Alabama.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND PREVIEW: For now the chance of rain over the holiday
weekend looks very small statewide; highs Saturday through Monday should be
somewhere between 85 and 89 degrees, with lows mostly in the 60s. Each day
should feature a good supply of sunshine with only scattered clouds from
time to time.

AT THE BEACH: No tropical woes for the central Gulf coast over the weekend;
expect about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with just a few scattered
showers and storms around. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the
upper 80s.

ERNESTO: Tropical storm Ernesto moved into extreme South Florida late last
night; sustained winds were only around 45 mph, but places like Miami and
Fort Lauderdale were under a tornado watch due to the possibility of a few
small tornadoes in the spiral bands rotating around the system. While the
wind could be enough for scattered tree and power line damage, the main
threat is heavy rain and flooding. An inland tropical storm warning is in
effect tonight as far north as the Georgia coast. Ernesto will move to near
Daytona Beach this afternoon, then to a point north of Charleston tomorrow
night. The system will then move northward, producing heavy rain for much of
the eastern U.S. A few places along the path could receive over five inches
of rain.

Elsewhere, there are few tropical waves scattered across "hurricane alley"
from the Lesser Antilles to the coast of Africa, but for now none of them
show any real sign of organization.

BAMA RAIN: Rain totals yesterday included .90" at Decatur, .60" at Gadsden,
.51" at Muscle Shoals, and .39" at Greystone Cove in the northern part of
Shelby County.

HEAT BACKS DOWN: Yesterday's high in Dallas/Fort Worth was a "cool" 89
degrees. Up in Duluth, Minnesota, the mercury was only able to reach 61
degrees with a cool north breeze. A reminder fall is getting close!

BAD WEATHER NORTH AND SOUTH: This afternoon all of us in the weather
department feel like our heads are on a swivel, because we are having
to watch bad weather both north and south. First, here in Alabama, a
line of strong to severe thunderstorms that formed over North
Mississippi moved into North and West Alabama. The NWS issued a Severe
Thunderstorm Watch that goes until 9:00 tonight for areas as far south
as Cullman, Oneonta and Gadsden.

This does not mean that some strong thunderstorms will not affect the
rest of Central Alabama. Much of the area will be affected later on
this afternoon and tonight, especially through the evening.

We expect scattered thunderstorms again Wednesday as high
temperatures back off a few degrees. By Thursday and Friday , we look
for only widely separated storms and by Saturday you probably won't
see any.

Tropical Storm Ernesto, as he moves north closer to the Atlantic
coast, will actually pull down some drier and slightly cooler air into
Alabama. This will lower our humidity some for the weekend and drop
low temperatures over North and Central Alabama to between 65 and 68.
Starting tomorrow, highs should stay away from 90.

THE TROPICS: A tragedy continued to unfold a year ago today after
Katrina had already devastated coastal Louisiana, the Mississippi
coast, as well as Dauphin Island and the coast of Mobile County in
Alabama. By mid-afternoon, the center was passing through East
Mississippi and Meridian was getting gusts to 82 mph.

Today we are watching Tropical Storm Ernesto. He moved off the north
coast of Cuba this morning and was becoming better organized. He will
make landfall in the Florida Keys and extreme South Florida tonight
and then move northward through Eastern Florida, out into the Atlantic
for a while and back on shore in South Carolina. Tremendous amount of
rain is going to be a big problem near and east of the path.

OUR WORLD OFWEATHER: It was great that the high was only 83
yesterday in Dallas-Ft. Worth…hottest in the country was 117 in Death
Valley…some cold spots this morning, Yellowstone National Park with
35, Eagle, Alaska 27.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Have not played even one minute with
Little Miss Molly today. We took her to the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop)
early this morning. She just got home at mid-afternoon. She looks so
cute with her shorter hair and she smells good—like a perfumed young
lady. With her shorter hair, her eyes look even larger and that is bad
for me, because she can get anything she wants. I do not mind—it is an
enjoyable life. Too much noise at the PBS, so she will probably sleep
for hours—then a huge ball game. I will be ready.

...Rain Chances Going Up...

We expect a general increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms
across Alabama today thanks to a surface front approaching from the
northwest. The chance of any one spot getting wet today is about one in
three, and most of the showers and storms should come during the afternoon
and evening hours. The front will be a slow mover, and we will have to
maintain at least a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms on
Wednesday. By Thursday and Friday, the best chance of showers will be over
the eastern third of the state where the moisture will be a little deeper.

Temperatures will trend downward for the rest of the week. In fact, there is
a chance a number of Alabama communities will fail to reach 90 for the next
five to seven days; that will be a welcomed break from the summer heat.

ERNESTO: Tropical Storm Ernesto struggled much of the day yesterday due to
the low level circulation being interrupted by the mountains of eastern
Cuba.

Today there is a chance the system will grow stronger as it heads for South
Florida. For now it looks like it will be a tropical storm at the time of
initial landfall in the U.S., wetting down much of the Florida peninsula and
bringing the risk of some flooding along with tree and power line damage.
The system should emerge into the Atlantic east of Daytona Beach, and
Ernesto has a chance to become a minimal hurricane before it reaches land
again, this time around Charleston, SC Thursday afternoon. The latest NHC
track has the circulation moving to a point west of Washington, D.C.
Saturday, which means some risk of very serious flooding for much of the
mid-Atlantic coast region as the system slows down. There is a chance the
rain will be much heavier for Washington and Baltimore, as compared to
Miami, if this scenario is correct.

ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: There are a few unorganized waves scattered across
the Atlantic basin, but for now additional tropical storm formation is not
expected through mid-week.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY: Katrina was an extraordinarily powerful and deadly
hurricane that carved a wide swath of catastrophic damage and inflicted
large loss of life. It was the costliest and one of the five deadliest
hurricanes to ever strike the United States. Katrina first caused
fatalities and damage in southern Florida as a Category 1 hurricane on the
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. After reaching Category 5 intensity over
the central Gulf of Mexico, Katrina weakened to Category 3 before making
landfall on the northern Gulf coast one year ago today. Even so, the damage
and loss of life inflicted by this massive hurricane in Louisiana and
Mississippi were staggering, with significant effects extending into the
Florida panhandle, Georgia, and Alabama. Considering the scope of its
impacts, Katrina was one of the most devastating natural disasters in United
States history.

IN SEARCH OF COOL AIR: It is not to be found anywhere around here, in
fact not even for hundreds of miles. The nearest temperature I could
find as cool as the 50s this afternoon was in Yellowstone National
Park. I believe Yogi Bear used to call it Jellystone National Park.
As of yesterday, Tuscaloosa gas experienced 68 days in a row with
highs 90 or above!

NOW, ABOUT ERNESTO: He was till being partially deranged this
afternoon over Eastern Cuba. He is expected to gain strength again
after emerging off the north coast of Cuba as he heads toward South
Florida. The NHC track forecast brings him ashore on the SE coast of
Florida, then up through the eastern part of the state and just off
shore of Georgia and South Carolina. Why will a track like this affect
Alabama? It means we will get no adverse weather from Ernesto. Indeed,
the broad circulation around him will help invite another frontal
boundary to push down into Central Alabama Wednesday and early
Thursday. We are counting on that to give us some low temperatures in
the upper 60s toward the end of the week and highs from Wednesday into
the weekend in the upper 80s.

Meanwhile, we will have scattered showers and thunderstorms that
should increase in number Tuesday and maybe into Wednesday as the
frontal boundary gets closer to our area. By Thursday and Friday, the
showers and storms should thin out greatly and you might even notice a
slight drop in humidity.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: I just know people in Dallas and Ft. Worth are
out dancing in the streets today. Their long string of 100-degree plus
heat has been broken. The high at the DFW Airport Sunday was only 96.
At Fr. Worth Alliance Airport, 1.43 inches of rain in the last 24
hours…they are also dancing in Wichita Falls, which is always hotter
than Dallas. They are expecting highs in the upper 80s for the next
several days with lows by Thursday in the mid 60s…some of the more
pleasant low temperatures this morning included 27 in Barrow, Alaska,
28 in Gould, Colorado, and 31 in Leadville, Colorado…hottest yesterday
was 116 in Death Valley…here in Alabama, 1.03 inches of rain late
Sunday in Inverness, 0.84 in Clanton and 0.72 in Huntsville.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since Molly's birthday, I have tried to
have more ballgames with her as part of her continuing birthday
celebration. Our family has always celebrated birth weeks instead of
birthdays, because I worked round-the-clock shifts so many years in
the NWS and we often could not celebrate on the exact day…only thing
we gave Molly for her birthday was two boxes of treats—the kind she
seems to like better. She is happy as a lark. I wish you could have
seen her this morning strutting by the Old Crow Motel with not a care
in the world. Just so she gets her walks, her naps, her ballgames and
treats she is happy. Life goes on....
