ARLENE IS NO LADY: She is definitely going to mess up the Alabama weekend
and we have a wide variety of weather problems on our hands.
Arlene grew stronger over the SE Gulf of Mexico today. This afternoon she
was centered about 400 miles SSE of Pensacola. She is still a tropical
storm, but she may possibly attain hurricane strength before making
landfall. She was moving north at 13 mph. She should make a gradual turn to
the NNW with a slight increase in forward speed. The center should approach
the Gulf Coast Saturday, but foul weather will be widespread far beyond the
center. A Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are already in effect
for much of the Mississippi, Alabama and NW Florida coast.
Sustained winds were 60 mph this afternoon. An air force plane was going
into the center this afternoon.
Here's the latest thinking on where Arlene will go. Landfall may be near
Mobile late Saturday, then she should move up into extreme Eastern
Mississippi passing near Meridian Saturday night and to near Columbus,
Mississippi Sunday morning. After that she continues north through the
western parts of Tennessee and Kentucky to near Indianapolis by Monday
morning.
FLASH FLOOD WATCH: It's in effect for a wide area. Here in Central Alabama
it goes through Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service estimates
that 4-8 inches of rain may occur over the western part of Alabama with 2-5
inches in the east. A lot of this depends on the forward speed of Arlene.
For sure, if this much rain occurs, we will see some flash flooding.
The National Weather Service in Mobile believes that winds may gust as high
as 70 mph in places like Gulf Shores late Saturday or Saturday night.
Further north in Central Alabama, including the Birmingham area, we may see
gusts as high as 40 mph, especially late Saturday night or Sunday morning as
the center passes west of us. Finally, the weather will settle down by
Monday.
OTHER NOTES: Storm surges as much as 6 feet are expected along the Alabama
coast. The NWS, Mobile, advises that people along the immediate coast should
be prepared to move to higher ground. Evacuation of some low-lying coastal
areas, such as barrier islands and areas directly on the Gulf, is being
recommended by EMA officials. Isolated rainfall amounts as much as 5-10
inches are possible near the coast through Saturday night...the coldest spot
in the lower 48 this morning was Stanley, Idaho and Big Piney, Wyoming with
25...hottest yesterday was 105 in Laredo and Wink, Texas...lots of tornadoes
in the Plains yesterday and a moderate risk is in effect today over much of
West Texas including the Panhandle and Western Oklahoma.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor little Miss Molly. She will hardly get to
see me this weekend because of the extra work load due to Arlene. But we did
have a good time playing early this morning. She has started a new game
lately. She likes to play chase. Only thing is, I have to chase her. She
will come running at me and jump up on my leg only to bounce off and run
away...on our walk, we had a road rage, well, track rage, involving the
irritable mockingbird as we passed under her tree. She really chewed us out
this morning and kept diving down at us trying to scare us away. Molly leapt
high, but it was too far.
