==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: If I had been singing that song in the musical Oklahoma,
you know, that "Oh what a beautiful morning" song, I would have been singing
it about a day like today. Is that weird? It has been a perfect day for
curling up in the bed and sleeping in. I hope that you got to do that...

RAINFALL AMOUNTS: The morning's rain and storms dropped moderate amounts
of rain across the area. Through noon, I had picked up 0.83 inches in
Trussville and 0.62 inches at the Birmingham Airport. There were some fairly
gusty winds associated with a narrow convective line that passed through the
Birmingham area between 11 and 11:30 a.m. Some lightning was indicated on
lightning detection systems, but I never heard any thunder in Trussville.
Most of the lightning was further south over Central and South Alabama.

MORE RAIN AND FLOODING AHEAD: While today's rain is exiting the area to the
east, I am afraid more heavy rain is looming in our future. In fact, by
midweek, indications are that we might be dealing with an extended heavy
rain event that could produce significant flooding problems across the area
again. In addition, there might be some severe weather thrown in.

First, we will enjoy clearing and cool conditions overnight. Readings will
drop into the middle to upper 30s across much of the area tonight. There
will probably be a little scattered light frost in protected locations. We
are still waiting for our first official freeze at the Birmingham Airport,
and I don't think that our push for the latest first freeze will be in any
danger tonight. Given the current look of the models, I don't see that
first freeze in sight. That will be a significant record to break.
Sunday will be a relatively beautiful day. Not in my warped sense of
weather, but in 99.8% of the population's book. Look for lots of sunshine
and mild temperatures topping out near 60. Sunday night will feature partly
cloudy skies with a low around 40.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday, high pressure will be grudgingly giving up its
hold on our weather. Also, strong low pressure will be developing to the
west of Alabama. Our winds will have shifted around to the southeast., and
moisture levels and rain chances will be on the increase during the
overnight hours. Rain and thunderstorms will overspread the area on
Tuesday. We will see periods of rain and storms through Wednesday
afternoon, with a line of thunderstorms pushing across the area Wednesday
morning. Those storms could be on the strong to severe, but probably will
not be as widespread as we saw this past week. Rainfall amounts could be
formidable, however, with average amounts between Tuesday morning and
Wednesday night averaging three to four inches with some higher amounts.
This could obviously cause flooding problems.

REST OF THE WEEK: Thursday will feature clearing skies with high pressure
holding sway through Saturday morning. Another heavy rain event will affect
the state Sunday, but it appears it may be more over South Alabama.

...More Rains In Our Future...

GOOD MORNING! And we really don’t need any more rain. Birmingham has already received 9.82 inches of rain in the month of November, which is enough to make it the third wettest November in the city’s official records. It will have to rain a lot in the next four days to ease into second or first place. Nearly five inches for second place. Now, we don’t expect that to happen, but we could see up to an inch today and another inch or so on Monday

WARMER START: Temperatures getting off to a warmer start this morning than yesterday, when we came very close to our first official freeze of the season. Birmingham’s latest first freeze was on December 5, 1921. The airmass behind our next cold front will be Pacific in origin and will not produce any freezing temps. Another front at midweek will bring colder air, with a chance of a freeze Saturday morning. But we might break that latest first freeze record.

RAIN TODAY: A vigorous, but fast moving storm system will bring rain to the state today. There will be some thunderstorms involved, but they will be of the elevated variety, meaning the source of instability will be a few thousand feet above the surface. This means no severe weather, but you will hear a few rumbles of thunder. Rainfall amounts should average less than an inch, so no major flooding is expected.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: Tomorrow should be a beautiful day with sunshine and mild
temperatures. Monday will be a transition day again as another low pressure system organizes to the west of Alabama. A warm front will move north, bringing another round of showers and some thunder to the state Monday night into Tuesday.

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Alabama will be in the warm sector on Tuesday, with additional showers and storms. A cold front will sweep our way by Wednesday, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be strong to severe again. And once again, the extended period of showers and storms could be produce locally heavy rainfall amounts. This could of course lead to additional flooding.

MORE QUICK CHANGES: If you were out early this morning, you most likely saw some frost as we experienced generally the coldest morning since last spring. But we are in for some quick changes in the weather and it’s going to be that way for much of the next week. But let’s look at some of the colder temperatures around the state this morning:

28 in Ft. Payne, Glencoe, Gadsden, Highland Home,
DeSoto State Park
29 in Pinson and at Russell Cave National Monument 30 in Helena, Weaver, Center Point, Collinsville
31 in Anniston, Decatur, Greenville, Russellville
32 in Evergreen, Huntsville, Troy, Cullman, Truss-
ville, South Madison, Smokerise
33 in Birmingham, Montgomery, Atmore, Brewton

It will not be near that chilly tonight as southerly winds set in. We will probably see some rain before daybreak and the rain will become more widespread Saturday and you could possibly hear thunder. It should taper off by Saturday evening, dry weather on Sunday, showers again by late Monday and a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday. We may be in for another heavy rain event in the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame, but it’s too early to be specific on that. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for tomorrow along the immediate Gulf coast.

SNOW IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS: It wasn’t that much, but the higher elevations of the Smokys were white with snow this morning. Atop Mt. LeConte there was 2 inches on the ground and on Newfound Gap 1 inch. The coldest temperature in the entire 48 states was on Mt. LeConte where it was 7 above zero this morning. It was 14 on Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Jacksonville State will be in Greenville, South Carolina for a playoff game with Furman University at 11 am Saturday. It should be 52 degrees at kickoff, but some showers will probably start before the game is over. UAB goes to Hattiesburg to play Southern Mississippi at 2 pm Saturday.

It should be 74 at kickoff. They will have a good chance of showers Saturday, but they may be tapering off by game time.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On our early walk this morning, little Miss Molly had to walk on frost-covered grass for the first time since last spring. Every time she stopped, she would hold up one of her paws. It was a great time for a walk. The sky was sparkling clear. The Old Crow Motel has lost all of its leaves, so the limbs (rooms) and the tree trunk was a stark contrast against the rising sun. It was a beautiful scene. The Old Crow Creek has lots of water from the recent rain and water was cascading down a small, man-made waterfall...last night there were 11 people at Molly’s house for our evening Thanksgiving meal, including 6 grandkids. Molly had unlimited attention. In fact, the room got so noisy at times that she would slither away and hide. When we finally went to bed around midnight, she jumped up on the bed and only made it two steps before she collapsed and was out like a light. That was one pooped puppy. Life goes on.

...Quick Weather Changes Ahead...

You know the saying: If you don't like the weather around here, just wait a
few hours and it will change. That will be very true over the next five to
ten days as an active pattern continues over the southern U.S.

Today we will enjoy a good deal of sunshine, with temperatures recovering to
near 60 this afternoon after a frosty start this morning. Clouds will return
tonight, and we will forecast periods of rain tomorrow thanks to a fast
moving disturbance. Rainfall amounts of one-quarter to one-half inch are
likely, not enough to produce any additional flooding. Drier air then
returns on Sunday with our sky becoming partly sunny.

NEXT WEEK: Unfortunately we will have to highlight rain at times Monday
through Wednesday as a southwest flow aloft sets up across Alabama and the
deep south. Some stronger storms will be possible late Tuesday into
Wednesday, and more heavy rain is not out of the question. We will have to
watch for flooding problems as the ground will still be completely soaked
from rains of five to 10 inches this week in many places.

THE LONG RANGE: Looking ahead into December, the longer range computer model
guidance continues to show an active southern branch of the jet stream,
which will bring frequent storm systems across the deep south. A northern
stream shows up near the Canadian border, which should keep the really cold
air north of us except for brief intrusions. All of this would suggest a
rather wet month with temperatures at or above normal levels.

COOSA FLOOD: Lake Logan Martin is expected to crest this morning at 471
feet, 6 feet above flood stage.

...A Chill in the Air; A Clearing Sky...

Colder and drier will continue to flow into Alabama on this Thanksgiving
day. Despite a clearing sky, temperatures will hold in the 40s most of the
day with a chilly northwest breeze. Then, by tomorrow morning, most
communities in north and central Alabama will drop into the 28 to 34 degree
range. For many spots this will be the first freeze of the season.

The big shopping day tomorrow should be beautiful with ample sunshine and
temperatures approaching 60 degrees by mid -afternoon.

THE REST OF THE WEEKEND: More quick changes as clouds return quickly on
Saturday, and a few passing showers are likely as a fast moving disturbance
passes through. Rainfall amounts should be relatively light, mostly under
one-half inch. Sunday should be dry and pleasant with a partly sunny sky.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like we will deal with occasional showers beginning Monday
afternoon all the way through Wednesday as yet another upper air trough
forms to the west of the state. At this time we do not expect a severe
weather threat with only limited dynamics.

HIGH WATER: The Cahaba River near Cahaba Heights is forecast to crest around
22.5 feet this morning, well above the flood stage of 14 feet. Relatively
minor flooding is expected in west Alabama along the Warrior and Tombigbee
Rivers through tomorrow.

SOAKED: At Huffman, the rain total yesterday was 3.30", and the total for
the past four days is a whopping 9.08". Other big rain totals yesterday
included 3.97" at Gardendale, 3.05" at Trussville, 2.80" at Greystone Cove,
2.46" at Calera, 2.32" at Vincent, 2.02" at Center Point, and 1.98" at
Alabaster.

==================================================================

A TOPSY-TURVY NIGHT: The weather last night and early today was not fit for
man or beast. Unfortunately, it turned violent in the early morning hours
today as several tornadoes touched down in several areas of Alabama. There
was one fatality at Bynum in Calhoun County when a large tree crashed across
a lady's mobile home. The stronger tornadoes seemed to be in places like
Chilton and Autauga Counties, but a lot of that will be sorted out after the
NWS completes their storm surveys. Autaugaville seemed to be hard hit, as
well as parts of Chilton County.

Torrents of rain overnight set off flash flooding in a number of areas. One
of the worst flood areas was in Etowah County, where as much as 5 inches of
rain fell between midnight and daybreak. There were some evacuations and
numerous roads were flooded.

Rainfall amounts were heavy, except over the southern third of the state. In
Pinson, 3.14 inches was recorded and Trussville 3.67 inches. Many places had
over 2 inches.

NOW WHAT?: A definite improvement in the weather. However, the cold front
was still west of Alabama this afternoon and will move through overnight.
There is still a chance of showers as the front moves through, but no
comparison to last night. With windy conditions, tomorrow morning's low of
43 is going to feel downright cold. Skies will be clearing Thanksgiving Day,
but the temperature will struggle to reach the 50-degree mark. A light
freeze follows early Friday morning with an average low across Central
Alabama near 31. All indications point to a quick turnaround and a rapid
return of moisture with more showers starting by Saturday afternoon, then
clearing on Sunday.

A GUARANTEED WET YEAR: Rainfall last night and this morning at Birmingham
Airport guaranteed that the city would have a wet year. Already 9.55 inches
of rain has fallen this month-double the normal. That brings the year's
total to 56.11 inches-about 2 inches above the normal for the entire year.
Trussville has now received 12.20 inches of rain this month.

WEDNESDAY WRAP UP: The strong low pressure area that caused all our
problems was moving NE across Western Kentucky this afternoon. Tornado
watches were still posted for the central parts of Tennessee and Kentucky,
as well as in Georgia and South Carolina. North of the low, snow was
spreading eastward, including places like St. Louis and Chicago...it was a
summer-like 90 degrees in Laredo, Texas yesterday and a winter-like 3 above
zero at Wolf Point, Montana this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Just as my little Miss Molly was arriving home
from the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) yesterday, I was leaving to go to 33/40 for
an all-night marathon of severe weather. When I got home at 9:30 this
morning with not a wink of sleep, you should have seen her. She acted like
she had not seen me in a week. We did some cuddling while I took a 45-minute
power nap. I'm going to make a special effort to spend a lot of time with
her Thanksgiving Day. She was so cute with a little bow around her neck and
she always smells so good after those visits. She did a lot of sleeping
after she got home because she doesn't get a chance to take her regular naps
while being bathed and groomed. Life goes on-rain or shine, storms or calm,
sleep or no sleep.
