A TOPSY-TURVY NIGHT: The weather last night and early today was not fit for
man or beast. Unfortunately, it turned violent in the early morning hours
today as several tornadoes touched down in several areas of Alabama. There
was one fatality at Bynum in Calhoun County when a large tree crashed across
a lady's mobile home. The stronger tornadoes seemed to be in places like
Chilton and Autauga Counties, but a lot of that will be sorted out after the
NWS completes their storm surveys. Autaugaville seemed to be hard hit, as
well as parts of Chilton County.

Torrents of rain overnight set off flash flooding in a number of areas. One
of the worst flood areas was in Etowah County, where as much as 5 inches of
rain fell between midnight and daybreak. There were some evacuations and
numerous roads were flooded.

Rainfall amounts were heavy, except over the southern third of the state. In
Pinson, 3.14 inches was recorded and Trussville 3.67 inches. Many places had
over 2 inches.

NOW WHAT?: A definite improvement in the weather. However, the cold front
was still west of Alabama this afternoon and will move through overnight.
There is still a chance of showers as the front moves through, but no
comparison to last night. With windy conditions, tomorrow morning's low of
43 is going to feel downright cold. Skies will be clearing Thanksgiving Day,
but the temperature will struggle to reach the 50-degree mark. A light
freeze follows early Friday morning with an average low across Central
Alabama near 31. All indications point to a quick turnaround and a rapid
return of moisture with more showers starting by Saturday afternoon, then
clearing on Sunday.

A GUARANTEED WET YEAR: Rainfall last night and this morning at Birmingham
Airport guaranteed that the city would have a wet year. Already 9.55 inches
of rain has fallen this month-double the normal. That brings the year's
total to 56.11 inches-about 2 inches above the normal for the entire year.
Trussville has now received 12.20 inches of rain this month.

WEDNESDAY WRAP UP: The strong low pressure area that caused all our
problems was moving NE across Western Kentucky this afternoon. Tornado
watches were still posted for the central parts of Tennessee and Kentucky,
as well as in Georgia and South Carolina. North of the low, snow was
spreading eastward, including places like St. Louis and Chicago...it was a
summer-like 90 degrees in Laredo, Texas yesterday and a winter-like 3 above
zero at Wolf Point, Montana this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Just as my little Miss Molly was arriving home
from the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) yesterday, I was leaving to go to 33/40 for
an all-night marathon of severe weather. When I got home at 9:30 this
morning with not a wink of sleep, you should have seen her. She acted like
she had not seen me in a week. We did some cuddling while I took a 45-minute
power nap. I'm going to make a special effort to spend a lot of time with
her Thanksgiving Day. She was so cute with a little bow around her neck and
she always smells so good after those visits. She did a lot of sleeping
after she got home because she doesn't get a chance to take her regular naps
while being bathed and groomed. Life goes on-rain or shine, storms or calm,
sleep or no sleep.
