GOOD AFTERNOON: If I had been singing that song in the musical Oklahoma,
you know, that "Oh what a beautiful morning" song, I would have been singing
it about a day like today. Is that weird? It has been a perfect day for
curling up in the bed and sleeping in. I hope that you got to do that...
RAINFALL AMOUNTS: The morning's rain and storms dropped moderate amounts
of rain across the area. Through noon, I had picked up 0.83 inches in
Trussville and 0.62 inches at the Birmingham Airport. There were some fairly
gusty winds associated with a narrow convective line that passed through the
Birmingham area between 11 and 11:30 a.m. Some lightning was indicated on
lightning detection systems, but I never heard any thunder in Trussville.
Most of the lightning was further south over Central and South Alabama.
MORE RAIN AND FLOODING AHEAD: While today's rain is exiting the area to the
east, I am afraid more heavy rain is looming in our future. In fact, by
midweek, indications are that we might be dealing with an extended heavy
rain event that could produce significant flooding problems across the area
again. In addition, there might be some severe weather thrown in.
First, we will enjoy clearing and cool conditions overnight. Readings will
drop into the middle to upper 30s across much of the area tonight. There
will probably be a little scattered light frost in protected locations. We
are still waiting for our first official freeze at the Birmingham Airport,
and I don't think that our push for the latest first freeze will be in any
danger tonight. Given the current look of the models, I don't see that
first freeze in sight. That will be a significant record to break.
Sunday will be a relatively beautiful day. Not in my warped sense of
weather, but in 99.8% of the population's book. Look for lots of sunshine
and mild temperatures topping out near 60. Sunday night will feature partly
cloudy skies with a low around 40.
THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday, high pressure will be grudgingly giving up its
hold on our weather. Also, strong low pressure will be developing to the
west of Alabama. Our winds will have shifted around to the southeast., and
moisture levels and rain chances will be on the increase during the
overnight hours. Rain and thunderstorms will overspread the area on
Tuesday. We will see periods of rain and storms through Wednesday
afternoon, with a line of thunderstorms pushing across the area Wednesday
morning. Those storms could be on the strong to severe, but probably will
not be as widespread as we saw this past week. Rainfall amounts could be
formidable, however, with average amounts between Tuesday morning and
Wednesday night averaging three to four inches with some higher amounts.
This could obviously cause flooding problems.
REST OF THE WEEK: Thursday will feature clearing skies with high pressure
holding sway through Saturday morning. Another heavy rain event will affect
the state Sunday, but it appears it may be more over South Alabama.
