...Storms Tonight...

Severe weather was occurring to the west and northwest of Alabama on
this Saturday afternoon. The SPC has a moderate risk outlook posted
for northern Arkansas, eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois. A
slight risk outlook has been issued for areas as far east as the
western half of Mississippi and western Tennessee. Tornado watches
stretch all the way from the southern parts of Chicagoland into the
Ozarks and the South.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A powerful storm system is over the mid-section
of the nation this afternoon. The strong mid and upper level trough
is swinging out onto the Plains. At the surface, a low pressure system
is getting better organized over Missouri. A large warm sector is
south and east of the surface system. 60F dew points have spread as
far north as southern Illinois. 70F temperatures are noted as far
north as Missouri. A line of intense storms precedes a cold front
that is pushing eastward. The warm sector will provide the fuel for
thunderstorms through the afternoon and into the evening over a wide
area for late December.

STRONG STORMS FOR US? We started our gray this morning, but breaks in
the clouds were allowing for some sunshine at late morning.
Temperatures will soar into the 70s this afternoon. A strong
southerly wind continues to pump in warm, moist air. Showers will
begin to pop up over western sections of the state late this afternoon
and into tonight. The line of storms will approach western Alabama
by late this evening, but it should be weakening as the surface low
lifts out to the northeast and the front weakens. There still will be
some strong storm overnight, and you can expect a few warnings, but
widespread severe weather is not anticipated. Just in case, keep that
Weatheradio on alert overnight.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Rain will continue into the morning hours on
Sunday as the front pushes slowly southeastward. It should end by
afternoon in most areas. Temperatures will fall through the morning
hours, then hold steady during the day in the 50s. No real cold air
behind this system, and we will return to seasonable levels for Monday
and Tuesday will dry conditions expected. There are signs that we
will deal with a wet weather system late Thursday night into Friday,
but the details are a bit fuzzy at this time. The rain should be gone
by Saturday, with a surge of cold air moving in on the heels of the
storm system. Lows will be below freezing Sunday morning. Look for a
double barreled wet weather system in the week after New Years, along
with a change to much colder in the end of that week. Could there be
some wintry weather by the end of the week? It is still way too
early to call, but with a negative NAO in mid-January, things could
get interesting.

SKY SHOW THIS WEEK: The heavens have a spectacular sky show planned
for you this week. It has actually already started, but clouds will
hamper any star gazing tonight. Tomorrow night, get ready to check
out the brightest planet, Venus in the southwestern sky after sunset,
along with a beautiful new Crescent Moon and a dynamic duo that will
put on a performance through New Years Eve. Just above the horizon,
the tiniest planet Mercury will appear to be getting closer and closer
to Jupiter, heading toward a fabulous conjunction Wednesday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: An unusual summer storm packing winds of
cyclone magnitude struck the 115 sailboats of the famed Sydney to
Hobart yacht race. Six sailors died and 55 had to be rescued in a
heroic air and sea effort that included night helicopter sorties to
pull people out of the water. Storm warnings had been issued for the
race participants, but pressure caused officials to allow the race to
begin on time. Computer models did not have the resolution to show
the full intensity of the storm's hurricane force winds and 30 foot
seas. Families of the victims blamed the meteorologists and race
officials for not intervening.

...Severe Weather Possible...

Friday was a gray but mild day across Central Alabama. The clouds
broke up enough for a few peeks of late afternoon sunshine in a few
areas. Temperatures warmed into the 60s and even lower 70s, which is
some 12-16 degrees above average for late December. Tuscaloosa posted
a high temperature of 72F, which tied the record for the date.

MORE RECORD HIGHS TODAY? Widespread 70s are expected across Central
Alabama today. This will be record territory again. Some of the
record highs for
December 27th across include: 74F at Birmingham, 78F at Tuscaloosa,
75F at Anniston, 74F at Gadsden, 76F at Pinson, 75F at Talladega, 75F
at Clanton, 71F at Hamilton and 75F at Jasper. Skies will be mostly
cloudy, although there will be a few breaks in the clouds during the
late morning and afternoon.

SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL: With the warmth often follows severe
weather, and today will be no exception. Severe weather is expected
over a wide area to the west of Alabama today from eastern Texas and
Oklahoma through Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, western Mississippi,
Tennessee and Kentucky into southern Illinois and Indiana. There has
been talk that there might even be a moderate risk with the potential
for significant tornadoes, especially over the southern part of the
risk area over Texas and Louisiana. The slight risk area comes up to
the Northwest corner of Alabama. The event should morph into a squall
line even during the overnight. This fact and the fact that it will
be arriving during the late night hours will be in our favor, and the
severe weather potential will be limited. There will still be the
potential for severe weather overnight, especially north of the I-59
corridor with damaging winds being the greatest threat. But with
thunderstorms, and especially with low instability and high shear
events like this one, expect the unexpected. And set that new
Weatheradio Santa brought on alert overnight. Showers will continue
into Sunday morning and it will be cooler.

PAPA JOHNS BOWL FORECAST: Monday will be the Papa Johns Bowl at
Legion Field. Fine weather is expected for the 2 p.m. kick off
between NC State and
Rutgers. It will be sunny with a kickoff temperature of 61F. Grab
some tickets and go!

REST OF THE WEEK AHEAD: Tuesday will also boast sunshine filled skies
and slightly above average temperatures. Wednesday will feature a
cold front that will be accompanied by showers mainly over southern
sections of the area. As has been the case quite frequently recently,
the front will run out of steam as it runs up against the big
subtropical ridge. As another trough swings by on Thursday night and
Friday, showers will develop again over the state. The rain should
leave Saturday, leaving dry and seasonably cold conditions for Sunday
and Monday morning. The next rain chance comes early in the next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Dense fog in the Tampa Bay area caused a series
of chain reaction accidents on the soaring Sunshine Skyway Bridge,
involving 50 vehicles. One person was killed and 24 injured. The
1280-foot span across the mouth of Tampa Bay was closed in both
directions.

...More Unsettled Weather...

CONFUSED THERMOMETERS: Alabama thermometers have gotten a real workout
in the last couple of weeks, running up and down the scale, making us
shiver at times and making us bring out the short sleeves at other
times.

Today is one of the milder days. This afternoon, temperatures were in
the 60's over much of North and Northeast Alabama but in the 70's down
south. It was 73 in Montgomery, 74 in Mobile at 2:00pm. Low clouds
covered much of the state and there were a few patches of light
drizzle and rain, mainly over the eastern counties. Some of the higher
elevations, such as Mt. Cheaha, were actually in the base of the
clouds with very poor visibility. On the 33/40 Skycam at Gulf Shores,
we could see sea fog rolling in.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: Some changes are ahead, including another cold
front. Probably the best news about the cold front is that we do not
see any bitter cold temperatures after it gets here. Our lowest
temperatures will probably be in the thirties Monday and Tuesday
morning, although some northeast Alabama cold spots could have around
28.

THE RAIN SITUATION: Birmingham has now received 6.06 inches of rain
this month, bringing the total for the year to 54.75". That is a
surplus of 1.69" so we will end the year avoiding a deficit. Our next
rain event is coming up. Latest model input indicates that our best
chance of getting showers and thunderstorms will be later Saturday
night into Sunday morning. A few of those could be strong. It is not
out of the question that we might see a few severe thunderstorm
warnings. But this does not look like a major severe weather threat.
The better threat of severe storms is from Northeast Texas into
Missouri this afternoon and tonight, with a slight risk shifting
eastward as far as Northwest Mississippi and West Tennessee tomorrow.

ROAMING FAR AFIELD: Would not like to be on Kodiak Island, Alaska
today where the temperature was 19 with wind gusts to 56 mph and near
zero wind chill. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 18 below
zero at Presque Isle, Maine. In Alaska, it was 31 below at Arctic
Village. As much as 36 inches of snow fell in Teton County in NW
Wyoming Christmas Day, with 28 inches of new snow at the Jackson Hole
ski area. Alta, Utah, got 29 inches of new snow with 74 inches now on
the ground. There is 30 inches on the ground at Bethel, Vermont.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The life of Little Miss Molly has been
turned upside down lately. She seems to be really really missing not
having the majority owner here. She is in the hospital and will be
released Monday. Considerable improvement. She also wanted me to thank
the 82 people who sent her an email get well wish. The first two
nights, Molly absolutely refused to sleep with me. She jumped down off
the bed five times and parked by the bedroom door, waiting for Judy to
come in. On the second night, at 2:32am, I felt my bed shake. Molly
was getting a running start and lunging against my side of the bed to
wake me up. Away we went for a 2:32am bathroom trip. We were the only
2 humans awake at that hour for miles around (well I guess Molly is
just semi-human). Life goes on. We long for quieter times.

...A Warm December Day...

HEADED FOR THE 70s: A strong southerly flow will develop across
Alabama today, helping to push afternoon temperatures into the low
70s, almost twenty degrees above average values for late December in
Alabama. We have a shot at reaching today's record high, which is 72
degrees (set in 1911). A few widely scattered showers are possible,
but most of the day should be rain-free, and a few intervals of
sunshine are possible. Tomorrow should be even warmer; we are
forecasting a high of 75 tomorrow afternoon, If that is correct, we
will beat the current December 27 record high by one degree (74 in
1982).

STRONG STORMS IN OUR FUTURE? The Storm Prediction Center has defined a
risk of severe thunderstorms late today and tonight in the general
area from Dallas to St. Louis, including places like Tulsa, Little
Rock, and Springfield. The risk shifts to the west tomorrow, and
severe thunderstorms should be in progress tomorrow afternoon over
Mississippi. That band of showers and storms will move into Alabama
tomorrow night, and we will be monitoring the storms closely as they
move into our state for severe weather potential. At this time, it
looks like the storms will arrive after 9:00 p.m., and with decreasing
instability values and weakening dynamics, it seems like a major
severe weather threat is not likely. But, with thunderstorms in
Alabama, expect the unexpected, so we will keep an eye on them.
Rain will continue into Sunday morning, finally tapering off during
the midday hours. Rain amounts of 1/2 to one inch are likely, which
will increase the Birmingham rain surplus for 2008 (it stands at 1.59"
today). Sunday will be cooler; temperatures should hold in the 50s
during the day with clouds lingering through the evening hours.

NEXT WEEK: We are confident the weather will be dry Monday and Tuesday
with mostly sunny comfortable days and clear cool nights; temperatures
will be close to seasonal averages.

CHRISTMAS EVE TORNADOES: National Weather Service survey teams
confirmed an F0 tornado in Walker County, which touched down Christmas
Eve around 4:30 p.m. 4 miles southwest of Jasper along Alabama 69;
damage was mostly confined to downed trees. Another tornado was
identified just north of Belle Mina in Limestone County, where two
unoccupied mobile homes were destroyed and two large tractor sheds
destroyed. Large trees were uprooted, and one was tree blown over on
to a car at residence. One wall collapsed at small farm home. There
were no injuries in either tornado.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City recorded its greatest 24-hour
snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central Park in New
York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while
32 inches fell on some suburbs. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the
storm.

...Merry Christmas...
Were you dreaming of a White Christmas? In Birmingham weather
history, there has never been a White Christmas by thetrue
definition. That definition is snow falling and measurable snow on
the ground on Christmas Day. In December 1985, we came close, snow
flurries on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning that gave some areas a
dusting. There have been eight trace snowfall events on either
December 24th or 25th at the Birmingham Airport, the most recent
coming in 1995. In 1929, 5.5 inches of snow fell at the Weather
Bureau office in Fountain Heights on December 22nd. On Christmas Eve,
there were still 2.5 inches of snow on the ground. But most of the
snow melted on the 25th, as the mercury rose to 51F.

CHRISTMAS TORNADOES: Not surprisingly, Christmas tornadoes in
Alabama are not as rare as White Christmases. But they are still
rare. A review of the record shows three Alabama tornado events since
1950 before yesterday's unconfirmed tornado in Walker County. On
Christmas Eve 1964, three tornadoes were reported across South
Alabama, including two F2 tornadoes. On December 24, 1997, three
tornadoes injured nine people across South Alabama. Six years ago, on
Christmas Eve morning, a swarm of tornadoes struck during the early
morning. The worst, an F1 at Headland in Henry County destroyed
several mobile homes and injured eight.

WALKER COUNTY TORNADO: A National Weather Service team was surveying
the damage in Walker County near Jasper in the Hilliard and Sardis
communities this afternoon. We should have the results shortly.

THE FORECAST: The cold front that produced the severe weather
yesterday will come back north as a warm front this evening, spreading
showers as it goes. Those showers will push into the Tennessee Valley
and beyond overnight. Friday will feel springlike, with a few showers
possible in the warm advection pattern. Highs will get into the 70s.
By Saturday morning, a powerful upper system will be ejecting out of
the Southwest. Saturday will be mild and very windy, with southerly
winds furiously pumping in moisture ahead of a strong cold front.
Most areas will be in the middle 70s Saturday afternoon with a moist
and increasingly unstable airmass. We will likely see more severe
weather Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Skies should clear
quickly on Sunday behind the front, but highs will not rise much above
the morning lows.

NEW YEARS WEEK: Look for dry conditions and seasonable temperatures
through Tuesday, with highs in the 50s to around 60 and lows in the
30s. An approaching cold front will bring shower chances back on
Wednesday. That front will stall also, allowing a Gulf low to form,
and giving us rain chances for New Years Day.

DECEMBER 25, 1983… Was the coldest Christmas Day on record for much
of the Central and Eastern United States, including Birmingham and

...Christmas Day Is Here...

MERRY CHRISTMAS: This is the day those of us that are Christians
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. I hope all of you have a little
time today to reflect on what this is all about. It is truly the most
wonderful time of the year. I hope you and your family get the chance
to spend some quality time together today and enjoy the true joy of
this day.

FRONT STALLS: A surface front is forecast to stall out somewhere over
Central Alabama today, keeping our sky generally cloudy. And, we will
mention a chance of some light rain at times with the front nearby.
The best chance of seeing sun today will be to the north, over the
Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama. The front will move slowly
northward tonight as warm front, which means a pretty decent chance of
showers along and north of the boundary. Highs today will be a little
cooler, most places will top out around 60 degrees.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Breezy and warmer weather is the story
tomorrow; any showers should be widely spaced, and afternoon
temperatures will soar into the low 70s. Then, over the weekend,
another cold front will bring another round of showers and
thunderstorms to Alabama. At this point it looks like the best chance
of organized showers and storms will come Saturday night into Sunday
morning. The rain should diminish by midday Sunday, followed by cooler
and drier air that settles in here for the first few days of next
week. Highs will drop into the 50s by Sunday afternoon with a cool
north breeze.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: Tornado warnings were issued for Tuscaloosa and
Walker counties late yesterday; an unconfirmed tornado was reported
just south of Jasper near the intersection of Alabama Highway 69 and
County Road 124; a church was damaged and a number of trees were blown
down in the area. Trees were also blown down over parts of North
Tuscaloosa County. The storms diminished quickly after 6:00 p.m. as
the best dynamics moved well to the north of Alabama.

CHRISTMAS DAY 1989: Record cold over the Southeast. The mercury
plunged to zero at Wilmington NC and 5 degrees at Jacksonville FL,
both all-time records for those locations. Temperatures plunged to 22
degrees in Orlando FL, with reading in the teens recorded in some of
the normally colder locations. Major damage was caused to citrus crops
in the area. Tallahassee FL has a trace of snow, the first time that
ever occurred on Christmas Day.

CHRISTMAS DAY 1983: Coldest Christmas Day of record in the central and
eastern United States. More than 125 record low temperatures for the
date. 24 of those records were all-time records for the month of
December. Galveston TX recorded 14 degrees and Huntsville recorded a
low of 1 degree below zero. Birmingham's low that morning was 2
degrees above zero.

...Merry Christmas!...
MERRY CHRISTMAS: I am very thankful for all of my associates here; we
have a unique and very talented weather team that has worked hard to
make this the "go to" source for weather information. We thank you for
taking the time to read on a daily basis. On behalf of J.B. Elliott,
Bill Murray, Dr. Tim Coleman, Brian Peters, Jason Simpson, John
Oldshue, and Ashley Brand, we wish you a very Merry Christmas. I hope
you and your family enjoy God's richest blessings at this time of the
year.

SANTA NEEDS HIS UMBRELLA: We will highlight a good chance of showers
and possibly a thunderstorm across Alabama tonight thanks to an
approaching cold front. At this time we don't expect a significant
severe weather risk since there is very little surface based
instability, and the best dynamics will pass well to the north of
Alabama. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely.

Tomorrow for Christmas Day, the front will run out of gas somewhere
over Central Alabama; cooler and drier air will filter into the
northern quarter of the state on the north side of that front. The
best chance of seeing some sunshine will be north of I-20; clouds will
linger over the southern two-thirds of the state, and there could even
be a little lingering light rain in spots close to the dissipating
front. The weather will be a little cooler, with a high in the upper
50s.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday will be a breezy and rather warm
December day with temperatures soaring into the low 70s; there might
be a few showers around, but they should be very isolated. Over the
weekend, the best chance of showers and storms will come Saturday
night with another weakening front pushing into Alabama. There is a
risk of severe weather Friday night in the broad area from Dallas to
St. Louis, and a risk Saturday over West Tennessee and West Kentucky,
but the main dynamics lift well north of Alabama, and a major severe
weather problem is not expected here Saturday night when the storms
arrive.

VOODOO LAND: Peeking into early 2009, there are signs that an upper
air pattern change could be in the offing, which would mean a colder
pattern for Alabama and the Deep South in January. Of course, way too
early for specifics, but considering the amount of cold air over North
America, along with the vast snow cover, this is something we will
watch carefully in coming days.

TIRED OF SNOW: Chicago has been dealing with brutally cold weather,
ice, and snow for most of December. The city has out its full fleet of
274 snow plows. The snowy weather in the Windy City cancelled 400
flights out of O'Hare Airport yesterday, and most airlines were
reporting delays this morning from a half-hour to 90 minutes. At
Midway Airport, airlines are reporting delays of 90 minutes or more
with a few cancellations. Icy conditions are also responsible for
major delays at the big airports in New York City today. These
conditions at the major hubs are responsible for other flight delays
at airports all over the nation.

...A Few Strong Storms Tonight...

SANTA WILL NEED AN UMBRELLA: On this Christmas Eve, strong south winds
will develop across Alabama today, pulling in moist air from the Gulf
of Mexico and making for a pronounced warm-up. Most places will wind
up in the upper 60s this afternoon, about 15 degrees above average for
December 24. We will mention a chance of showers during the day, but
they will be rather scattered. The main weather action this afternoon
is expected to be to the west of our state, where strong to severe
thunderstorms could break out this afternoon over the northern half of
Mississippi. This band of showers and storms will move into our state
tonight, and we expect a gradual weakening trend. But, a few strong
storms are certainly possible, especially along and west of I-65, and
we will watch the closely tonight (along with the NORAD tracking radar
that keeps an eye on activities around the North Pole!).

CHRISTMAS DAY: At this point it looks like the showers will end early
in the morning, and the sky becomes partly sunny tomorrow as cooler
and drier air slips into the state from the north. We are forecasting
a high in the upper 50s tomorrow with a decent amount of afternoon
sunshine through scattered clouds. Not a bad day for trying out those
new bikes, skates, and basketballs.

MORE CHANGES FOR THE WEEKEND: We warm up again Friday as temperatures
rise into the low 70s. Any showers on Friday should be widely
scattered with little upper support. To the west, severe storms could
break out Friday night over Arkansas and Louisiana, and those will be
moving our direction. At this time, it looks like the best chance of
rain over the weekend will come Saturday night as a cold front
approaches from the northwest. For now our risk of severe weather
seems fairly small with the best dynamic support passing well to the
north, and marginal instability values. But, as we often say, with
thunderstorms expect the unexpected, so we will be watching the radar
screens closely. Cooler air drier air moves into the state for Sunday
and the first two days of next week.

EXTREMES: Coldest place in the nation yesterday morning was Northway,
Alaska with 33 below zero. Plentywood, Montana was just behind with 32
below. Warmest spot was Pecos, Texas with 79.

LOOKING FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS? Much of the nation is snow covered this
Christmas Eve.
Places with a good snow cover include Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit,
Cleveland, Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis. Snow is also on the
ground across a large part of New England, where some power outages
are still being reported.

MERRY CHRISTMAS: On behalf of our entire weather team, including J.B.
Elliott, Bill Murray, Jason Simpson, Ashley Brand, Brian Peters, and
Dr. Tim Coleman, we would like to wish you and your family a very
Merry Christmas; I hope you enjoy God's richest blessings, and can
spend some good time with friends and family as we remember the real
reason for the celebration!

...Moderating Temperatures...

PART OF CHRISTMAS WILL BE SUNNY: Seems there are always some
surprises cranked into the weather menu when we have severely cold
temperatures followed by a warm up. I remember one time back in the
80s where the temperature warmed up so quickly after some bitter cold
that the moisture condensed on the parking lot and pavement and froze
with a thin sheet of ice because the surface was so cold and before
the temperature could get high enough to do away with it.

This morning a band of light precipitation spread across North Alabama
earlier than we had anticipated. Net result was some light freezing
rain across the north and NW counties. It came in so early that there
were a number of accidents, especially in Franklin County. The icing
was occurring for a time with temperatures a little above freezing.
This was because the infrastructure got so thoroughly chilled with the
bitter cold low temperatures Monday morning and then staying below
freezing all day yesterday.

NOW WHAT? We do not look for any additional problems like that.
Instead, the temperature will probably slowly climb tonight and warm
up even more tomorrow to the mid 60s. There is a chance of some rain
tonight, but a better chance of showers and a few thunderstorms for
tomorrow. Fronts are playing games with us and still another one will
move across Alabama Wednesday night and be mostly out of the state
Thursday morning. So, this is generally good news for Christmas Day.
There may be a few showers hanging on Christmas morning, but much of
the day will see the sun break through. The high should be near 59.

It is right back to more clouds and a chance of showers Friday and
Saturday with high both days near 70.

WEATHER BY THE NUMBERS: Would you believe that 19 years ago this
morning the temperature at Birmingham Airport was sitting on 1 above
zero? It was a major cold wave. It dropped to 11 in New Orleans and 26
below at Topeka. The pressure climbed to 1061mb. 15 inches of snow at
Wilmington, North Carolina. 22 below zero was the coldest in the lower
48 states this morning and 35 below was how cold it was at Mayo in the
Yukon of NW Canada. Parts of northeastern Maine got 42 inches of snow
out of this latest storm system. In the Pacific Northwest, both
Portland and Seattle have not seen as much snow in many, many years.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The majority owner is hospitalised and
will be in St. Vincents East probably through Christmas. This puts a
damper on our Christmas celebration as we were expecting as many as 20
people for chow on Christmas Day. The big disappointment will be
Little Miss Molly. She is very attached to the majority owner, because
every night when we go to bed, she gives Little Miss Molly a 15-minute
rubdown and head scratching until Molly can take it no longer and
collapses into a sound sleep. Molly will patrol every room of this
house numerous times over the next several days trying to find Judy. I
will try to take up the slack and spend a whole lot more time with
that little animal. If you want to send an e-mail greeting to the
majority owner, I will make sure she gets every one. Her e-mail
address is judyelliott2@charter.net. We all wish all of you a Merry
Christmas. No way we could do without our thousands of readers. Life
goes on—sometimes with some bumps.

...Very Mild Weather For Christmas...

WARMING UP FOR CHRISTMAS: More fast paced weather changes are ahead
for Alabama. We will see an increase in clouds today thanks to a
southerly flow; this will also means warmer afternoon temperatures
with most locations rising into the 50s today. A few sprinkles are
possible under the clouds today, and even some risk of morning sleet
showers, but the low levels remain very dry and most of the day will
be dry. Rain chances will increase late tonight and tomorrow as the
moisture deepens, and a surface front approaches.

That front should go stationary somewhere around here Christmas Day as
the front becomes parallel to the upper air low, meaning a mild and
wet weather pattern through the end of the week. Occasional showers
and a few thunderstorms are likely on a daily basis through Friday,
with very mild afternoons. Temperatures will soar into the upper 60s
tomorrow, which is around 15 degrees above average values for late
December in Alabama. The weather could be slightly cooler on Christmas
Day if
the front stalls south of Birmingham, but even then we are talking
highs in the low 60s.

WEEKEND PEEK: A strong storm system coming out of the Plains states
will bring more showers and storms to Alabama over the weekend; this
has the potential for bring strong to severe storms to the west of the
state Friday night into Saturday, in places like Louisiana, Arkansas,
and the western parts of Mississippi and Tennessee. At this point it
looks like the severe weather threat will diminish by the time the
storms move into Alabama since the upper support will be so far north,
and instability values rather marginal.

Once again, the front will be parallel to the upper air low, and it
could stall out over Central Alabama late in the weekend; if this
happens it will keep mild and wet weather in our forecast into early
next week. We will just have a hard time getting cold air down in here
for a long period of time with this upper air pattern.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: An epic cold wave was diving south to the Gulf
Coast. 122 cities across the central and eastern United States
reported record low temperatures for the date. 41 of the cities also
record lows for the month of December, some which had only been set
the day before. The temperature fell to 11 degrees at New Orleans and
Lake Charles LA, 4 below zero at San Angelo TX and 26 below zero at
Topeka KS, all establishing all-time record lows for those locations.
The pressure at the center of the anticyclone reached an amazing 1061
millibars. Meanwhile, a strong storm moving across the Florida
peninsula produced heavy snows along the Carolina coast. 15 inches of
snow fell at Wilmington NC and 13.3 inches at Cape Hatteras NC. It was
the first white Christmas of record from Florida to North Carolina.
Birmingham's low was 1 degree.
