...A Warm December Day...

HEADED FOR THE 70s: A strong southerly flow will develop across
Alabama today, helping to push afternoon temperatures into the low
70s, almost twenty degrees above average values for late December in
Alabama. We have a shot at reaching today's record high, which is 72
degrees (set in 1911). A few widely scattered showers are possible,
but most of the day should be rain-free, and a few intervals of
sunshine are possible. Tomorrow should be even warmer; we are
forecasting a high of 75 tomorrow afternoon, If that is correct, we
will beat the current December 27 record high by one degree (74 in
1982).

STRONG STORMS IN OUR FUTURE? The Storm Prediction Center has defined a
risk of severe thunderstorms late today and tonight in the general
area from Dallas to St. Louis, including places like Tulsa, Little
Rock, and Springfield. The risk shifts to the west tomorrow, and
severe thunderstorms should be in progress tomorrow afternoon over
Mississippi. That band of showers and storms will move into Alabama
tomorrow night, and we will be monitoring the storms closely as they
move into our state for severe weather potential. At this time, it
looks like the storms will arrive after 9:00 p.m., and with decreasing
instability values and weakening dynamics, it seems like a major
severe weather threat is not likely. But, with thunderstorms in
Alabama, expect the unexpected, so we will keep an eye on them.
Rain will continue into Sunday morning, finally tapering off during
the midday hours. Rain amounts of 1/2 to one inch are likely, which
will increase the Birmingham rain surplus for 2008 (it stands at 1.59"
today). Sunday will be cooler; temperatures should hold in the 50s
during the day with clouds lingering through the evening hours.

NEXT WEEK: We are confident the weather will be dry Monday and Tuesday
with mostly sunny comfortable days and clear cool nights; temperatures
will be close to seasonal averages.

CHRISTMAS EVE TORNADOES: National Weather Service survey teams
confirmed an F0 tornado in Walker County, which touched down Christmas
Eve around 4:30 p.m. 4 miles southwest of Jasper along Alabama 69;
damage was mostly confined to downed trees. Another tornado was
identified just north of Belle Mina in Limestone County, where two
unoccupied mobile homes were destroyed and two large tractor sheds
destroyed. Large trees were uprooted, and one was tree blown over on
to a car at residence. One wall collapsed at small farm home. There
were no injuries in either tornado.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City recorded its greatest 24-hour
snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th, Central Park in New
York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4 inches, while
32 inches fell on some suburbs. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the
storm.
