...A Bad Situation...

I used to live listening to WWL on the radio when a hurricane was
threatening South Louisiana. At night, you could pick up their signal
clearly. Now, you can hear that signal clearly day or night, thanks
to Al Gore. But what I am hearing, I am not liking. Three years ago,
we watched as New Orleans became a third world country in the wake of
Katrina. Preparations so far for Gustav appear to have been
masterful. But I just hope Mother Nature doesn't trump her previous
performance.

GUSTAV IS QUITE A STORM: Hurricane Gustav strengthened rapidly on
Saturday, becoming a powerful Category Four storm, just an eyelash shy
of being a Category Five. It smashed across Cuba and entered the
southeastern Gulf of Mexico overnight. It will likely be a Five soon,
if it is not already. Spending the day over the warm waters of the
Loop Current, Gustav will likely be a top ten hurricane. There are
signs the hurricane might decrease slightly before landfall, but that
is not guaranteed. Tropical storm force winds will reach the southern
Parishes of Louisiana before dawn Monday, with increasing winds
through the morning hours and hurricane conditions by early
afternoon. Hurricane force winds will affect a band about 100 miles
wide along the path. If Gustav follows the expected track, tremendous
amounts of water will pour into areas east of the Mississippi River
levee system and Lake Ponchartrain. The effects could be
devastating. As the hurricane continues northwestward, it will push
water into the bays and wetlands south and southwest of New Orleans,
pushing water far inland. Rains of 10-15 inches will exacerbate the
flooding.

AFFECTS ON ALABAMA: As Gustav moves into the Central Gulf today, we
will likely see an outer feeder band rotate across the state today,
with a few scattered storms. But for the most part, it should be
partly cloudy and seasonably hot. You will notice the easterly breeze
today, and even more so on Labor Day. Scattered storms will develop
over Central Sections of the state tomorrow. Along the coast and over
Southwest Alabama, it is a different story. The weather will
deteriorate rapidly tonight. There will be dangerous surf, riptides
and coastal flooding today, increasing tonight. Tides along the
Alabama coast and in Mobile Bay will run 4-6 feet above sea level on
the current forecast. Winds will increase to near tropical storm
force during the day on Monday, but if the track does not shift
eastward, Alabama will escape really strong winds. Tornadoes will be
likely over Southwest Alabama, but they should be limited to that
area. It will be breezy across Central Alabama on Monday and again on
Tuesday, and scattered storms will develop. A couple of isolated
tornadoes will not be out of the question along the feeder bands
further into Alabama, but I do not expect a serious problem. Wednesday
should see scattered storms over mainly western sections. As the
hurricanes goes inland it should move far enough northwest for typical
summertime conditions to return by Thursday and Friday and on into the
weekend.

REST OF THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Hanna will steam westward toward
the Bahamas and may hit the East Coast of Florida, Georgia or the
Carolinas. A new tropical depression will likely form later today
over the far eastern Atlantic.

ONE YEAR AGO: The NWS Office in Birmingham was struck by lightning
during a strong evening thunderstorm. The strike disabled several
computer systems, especially ones that automatically update web
content. Critical products and forecasts were not affected. However,
one of the most critical systems, the one which relays information
from upper air balloon releases was incapacitated. No one was injured
in the office. The office had been designed with protective measures
against such a strike, but lightning has a way of defeating such
measures.

...Gustav and Hanna...

Sounds like the characters in a movie love story. But it is our
tropical dynamic duo on this last weekend in August as the 2008 North
Atlantic Hurricane Season rolls on. Gustav could make history as it
moves into the southeastern Gulf late tonight and lurches toward
Louisiana on Monday.

RAPID INTENSIFICATION: At mid-afternoon yesterday, the central
pressure in Gustav was 980 millibars. Just after noon today, some 20
hours later, Air Force reconnaissance found a pressure of 935
millibars at the surface in a dropsonde observation. 55 mb in 20
hours. That 's wild. Not bad, but not near the record that 2005's
Wilma set. Wilma shattered all Atlantic records for deepening, with
6, 12 and 24 hour drops of 54, 88 and 97 millibars respectively for
those time periods. The former 12 hour deepening record was held by
Hurricane Allen in 1980, which saw a drop of 48 mb in 12 hours. The
true definition is 42 mb in 24 hours. Been there and done that, says
Gustav. Not a record, but still impressive.

GUSTAV: Gustav is an ominous hurricane. It will cross Cuba this
evening, which will knock it down a peg, but it could easily become a
Category Five hurricane over the southern Gulf where the Loop Current
is pumping high oceanic heat content water in from the Caribbean.
Gustav will be over that much of the day on Sunday. It is not out of
the question that it will become one of the ten strongest Atlantic
hurricanes on record. Now, it is expected to weaken a bit as it moves
toward the Louisiana coast, but it still will be a formidable Category
Four or at least strong Category Three hurricane when it makes
landfall there Monday evening. It should be far stronger than 1992's
Hurricane Andrew, which weakened rapidly in the hours before
landfall. It will rival or surpass Betsy, which made landfall near
Grand Isle in September 1965. Several levee breaches flooded parts of
the city of New Orleans.

HANNA/IKE: The second named storm out there for now is playing a
minor role, but that could change as the system northeast of the
Bahamas moves toward the southwest. It could move into the Gulf, it
could threaten South Florida and it could head north toward
Jacksonville, the Carolinas or Georgia. It could be a formidable
hurricane by that time. In the far eastern Atlantic, a developing
disturbance could well become Tropical Storm Ike in the next 24
hours. The system, near the Cape Verde Islands, it expected to move
northwest to a point 1000 miles west of Jacksonville by Thursday.

OH YEAH: Our weather. Tomorrow should be partly cloudy. It will be
a tad cooler and we come into the easterly circulation around Gustav.
Showers and storms will likely develop along an outer feeder band that
will rotate northward through the state, but coverage will be
relatively small. More of the same for Monday, with the heavy weather
staying south and southwest of us. Tuesday will see more widespread
storms over western and southwestern sections of Central Alabama.
There could conceivably be a tornado threat over western sections
Tuesday. By Wednesday, Gustav should be far enough west to allow us
to return to fairly typical summertime conditions. Those will
continue through Thursday. Our weekend looks dry and warm as we stay
under the sinking air from Hurricane Hanna to the east of Alabama.

WHAT'S A NICE GIRL LIKE YOU DOING AS A HURRICANE? Hurricane Carol
devastated Long Island and southern New England on this date in 1954.
The Weather Bureau received severe criticism about the name of the
storm. Editorials railed that it was not appropriate to give a nice
name like Carol to a destructive hurricane. Some people even said
that the name Carol gave the impression that the storm would not be
dangerous.

DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 150 MPH...WITH HIGHER GUSTS.
GUSTAV IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS WITH AN OVERALL
SLIGHT STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS...AND
GUSTAV COULD REACH CATEGORY FIVE INTENSITY DURING THIS PERIOD. GUSTAV
IS FORECAST TO REMAIN A MAJOR HURRICANE THROUGH LANDFALL ALONG THE
NORTHERN GULF COAST.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 70 MILES...FROM THE
CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 175
MILES.

THE MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE RECENTLY REPORTED BY THE RECONNAISSANCE
AIRCRAFT WAS 942 MB...27.82 INCHES.

...PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

RESIDENTS IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD BEGIN TROPICAL CYCLONE PREPARATIONS

GUSTS SUNDAY EVENING. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE LIKELY OVER THE
ALABAMA COASTAL WATERS FROM MIDNIGHT SUNDAY TO MIDNIGHT MONDAY.

...TORNADOES...

THE RISK OF TORNADOES IN RAIN BANDS WILL INCREASE SUNDAY EVENING INTO
MONDAY AS THE CENTER OF HURRICANE GUSTAV MOVES INTO THE NORTHERN
GULF. THE RAIN BANDS ON THE EAST SIDE OF TROPICAL CYCLONES WILL BE
MORE LIKELY TO CONTAIN TORNADOES.

...NEXT UPDATE...

THE NEXT TROPICAL STORM LOCAL STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED FROM THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE IN MOBILE BY 8 PM CDT.

...Watching Gustav...

All eyes are on the tropics on this Labor Day weekend as Hurricane
Gustav prepares to make its move toward the Gulf of Mexico. The
emotional toll is immense as Louisianans find themselves inundated
with constant news reports. On the positive side, preparations are
immensely better than in 2005 when Katrina came calling. People find
themselves breaking into tears as they consider whether their homes
will be gone when they return after evacuating. The thought of it
taking ten hours to go fifty miles is unbearable for them. The human
toll is staggering, even before the storm hits.

WHERE WILL IT HIT? That is the sixty four thousand dollar
question. The steering currents that are affecting the hurricane are
in a state of flux. Gustav is exploiting a weakness in the
subtropical ridge over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This is allowing
the storm to take a more northwesterly track. The high pressure ridge
to the west of Alabama is expecting to build into a formidable ridge
from Texas to the Northeast U.S. If this happens, the hurricane could
be steered westward, even before it reaches the Louisiana coast. But
all indications are that the storm will make landfall west of the
Mississippi River. Landfall could occur as early as late Monday night
or early Tuesday. The further west it goes, the longer landfall will
be delayed. NOAA deployed their Gulfstream IV research aircraft for
a high altitude sampling of the upper atmosphere. This data will
hopefully help to improve model forecasts.

HOW STRONG WILL IT BE? Gustav will likely be a major hurricane by the
time it reaches Cuba late tonight. It could even be a Category Four
hurricane. Cuba will barely slow it down and it will recover over the
southeastern Gulf. There are indications that increasing shear could
weaken the storm prior to landfall, but Gustav will still be a
powerful Category Three of Four hurricane when it reaches shore.

OUR FORECAST: It will be dry and mainly hot through Sunday across
Central Alabama with only widely scattered afternoon storms to break
things up a bit. As the hurricane passes to our southwest, the outer
feeder bands may enhance storm chances over western and southwestern
sections. Tuesday will feature the best chances. Rain chances will
back off on Wednesday as the storm moves away.

HANNA: Hanna may be a significant player in our weather by next
weekend. The storm is expected to meander southwestward toward the
Bahamas and Florida Straits. It could enter the Gulf of Mexico before
turning to the north. It could threaten the coast by the weekend.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Louisiana-Monroe will be at Auburn for a 6 p.m.
game today. Very warm with 88 at kick off and 82 in the fourth
quarter. Almost a small risk of a shower. The University of Tulsa will
be in Birmingham to play UAB at Legion Field at 3:00 p.m. Only a small
risk of a shower, but a hot 92 degrees at kick off. The Alabama-
Clemson game is in the Georgia Dome Saturday night, so no concern
about rain.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Mighty Hurricane David grew into one of the
most intense storms ever to cross the Caribbean Sea. After wiping out
the tiny island of Dominica with 150 mph winds, David crashed ashore
in the Dominican Republic at peak intensity on August 30th, with wind
gusts over 200 mph. The central pressure in the storm was at its
lowest at 924 millibars. More than 1,200 people on the two-nation
island were killed and over 80,000 were left homeless. Damage totaled
more than $1 billion in the Caribbean alone. Skipping through the
Bahamas, David struck a glancing blow on Florida, just north of the
Gold Coast, tore across Cape Canaveral and then chewed its way up the
East Coast on September 6th, downing trees and power lines well into
New England.

...Eyes On The Gulf of Mexico...

COASTAL ALABAMA COULD GET STORMY: We do not know exactly what
percentage of our rain can be attributed directly to the Gulf of
Mexico. We do know that almost all of our hurricane disasters over the
years came roaring out of the Gulf. We will be watching very closely
that big body of water all the way into early next week for possible
real problems from Hurricane Gustav. He was moving westward south of
Cuba this afternoon and was on the verge of being a hurricane. He will
surely be that soon. After he gets into the SE Gulf of Mexico, he will
head directly NW across the heart of the Gulf and that is when several
things can happen. He will become a major hurricane. The most often
mentioned of landfall is on the Louisiana coast late Monday night or
early Tuesday morning. We have pounded away that the track can be off
that far ahead and the National Hurricane Center emphasizes that also.
As it stand now, landfall could be anywhere from the lower Texas coast
north and east from the NW Florida Panhandle. A State of Emergency has
been declared in Louisiana and at several other places along the
coast. In Mobile County, volunteer evacuation could begin as early as
Saturday morning. It is likely that massive evacuation will be ordered
from New Orleans and South Louisiana and maybe the Mississippi coast.

NWS in Mobile mentions that it is possible that tropical storm
conditions could reach the Alabama coast by Sunday night and possible
hurricane conditions by Monday and Tuesday.

HOW ABOUT NORTH/CENTRAL ALABAMA: It depends entirely on landfall. If
the major hurricane goes into Western Louisiana, we should get by
without any serious problems. However, suppose that landfall is on the
Mississippi or Alabama coast. We would then have another Opal or Ivan
on our hands, which could result in a lot of trees and power lines
down even as far north as Birmingham and flash flooding from buckets
of rain. At this time, that seems the less likely probability.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Yes, it is that time of year again. It should be
mostly clear for high school games tonight with the risk of a shower
almost nonexistent. It should be in the warm 80s at kick off and 76 to
78 at the final whistle. Louisiana-Monroe will be at Auburn for a 6
p.m. game Saturday.
The
Alabama-Clemson game is in the Georgia Dome Saturday night, so no
concern about rain.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We have already discussed Gustav, but we have three
other disturbances. Tropical Storm Hanna is acting weird and may turn
toward the SW toward the Bahamas by Tuesday morning. A strong tropical
wave far out in the Eastern Atlantic, shows signs of development and
could become a tropical depression in the next day or so.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Leave it to Fay. Her bones dumped 5.06 inches of rain
on Richmond yesterday. Phoenix got 1.76 inches with the Arizona
monsoon. Lowest today 33 Yellowstone Park.

TROPICS CONTINUE TO EXPLODE: This morning we are dealing with Gustav,
Hanna, and another wave that could become Ike in coming days. Before
we get into the specifics about tropical weather, lets up front say
that the Alabama weather scene still looks pretty benign through
Monday with just a few widely scattered showers around each day, and a
high in the low 90s. A pretty good percentage of the holiday weekend
will be rain-free.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Look for a clear sky for tonight's high school
games, with a kickoff temperature in the mid 80s, dropping into the
upper 70s by the end of the game. Tomorrow, Auburn begins the season
with a game at home against Louisiana-Monroe. For the 6:00 kickoff,
the temperature will be around 88, falling into the low 80s by the end
of the game; there is only a small risk of a shower. UAB hosts Tulsa
at Legion Field at 3:00; the kickoff temperature will be close to 92,
falling to around 87 by the end of the game. Again, just a slight risk
of a shower. And, we continue to promise no rain for the
Alabama/Clemson game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Duh....

GUSTAV: This is expected to become a major hurricane in the southern
Gulf of Mexico over the weekend; the latest NHC track pushes Gustav to
a point near Morgan City, Louisiana Tuesday morning. This could mean
lots of rain for Alabama by Tuesday night and Wednesday of next week,
but there remains considerable uncertainty in the forecast. Some
models stall Gustav near the coast, followed by a slow turn to the
west. If this scenario works out, we won't get much rain, if any at
all. Residents along the Gulf coast from Corpus Christi, Texas to
Panama City, Florida will need to monitor the progress of Gustav
closely. Evacuations of New Orleans, and perhaps parts of the
Mississippi and Alabama coast, could begin at some point this weekend;
those evacuation orders will likely be issued later today. There is a
good chance contra-flow will established, turning all lanes of major
highways all northbound. This could include I-55, I-59, and I-65.

While at this point it looks like the most severe wind and rain will
remain west of the Alabama coast, changes in the forecast track are
possible in coming days as the system gets its act together over the
Gulf. It appears the highest risk of landfall will be from near Morgan
City, Louisiana to Gulf Shores, Alabama.

HANNA: This system, east/northeast of Puerto Rico, is forecast to be a
hurricane just east of the Bahamas by the middle of next week, with a
general motion toward the southern Atlantic coast of the U.S. Too
early to call a landfall point, if there is one, but everyone from Key
West north to Charleston and Cape Hatteras will need to monitor the
progress of this one.

AND ANOTHER ONE: A strong tropical wave moving off the coast of Africa
has a chance to become a tropical depression, and ultimately Tropical
Storm Ike in coming days.

...Fay Is Gone; Gustav Coming Onto the Scene...

THE ALABAMA STORY: Could it be that we are going to be affected by a
tropical storm and a hurricane only about one week apart? It is
entirely possible. Gustav is going to be a lot stronger than Fay, but
how are we going to beat Fay for the amount of rain. This afternoon
Gustav was dumping buckets of rain on Jamaica. Weather models have
been fairly consistent to bring Gustav between Cuba and the Florida
Keys and straight up the pike through the Central Gulf of Mexico for a
landfall somewhere on the North/Central Gulf of Mexico coast. That is
where uncertainty kicks in. The models have favored a landfall on the
central coast of Louisiana very early Tuesday morning. New Orleans is
quite nervous about this. However, we must mention that the cone of
concern flares out much further than that. Translation: people all the
way from near Corpus Christi, Texas around to NW Florida near Panama
City. The National Hurricane Center projects Gustav to be a Category 3
at landfall. If that happens, it will be a huge problem to the
landfall area.

Strangely enough, one of our most popular "regular weather models"
brings Gustav to the Louisiana coast but stalls it due to a high
pressure inland and slides Gustav westward offshore to South Texas.
That shows you what we have to deal with in the world of weather
models. The National Hurricane Center looks at everything and I tend
to think they are the best source.

HOW WILL ALABAMA BE AFFECTED: Assuming landfall on the Louisiana
coast, the main weather for the Alabama coast, including Gulf Shores
and Orange Beach, will be Sunday night and Monday and probably into
Tuesday when showers and thunderstorms will become numerous with some
locally heavy rain. Labor Day on the beach does not look good. If the
hurricane did make landfall as a Category 3 a little further east and
continued northward inland, there could be real weather problems over
a big part of Alabama including heavy rain, downed trees and power
lines and some flash flooding. Ivan was a good example.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Besides Gustav, we now have a new lady on the
stage. Her name is Hanna. She became a tropical storm this morning and
models are trying to turn her westward. It is too early to tell yet,
but the Atlantic Seaboard may need to watch her closely.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Would you believe that Fay is still causing some
problems? In the last 24 hours, that non-lady dumped 5.09 inches of
rain on Danville, Virginia, 2.51 at Roanoke and 3.47 on Raleigh. She
just will not give up, but she is about to just simply disappear. Cool
spots this morning included 29 in Yellowstone National Park and
Stanley, Idaho and 30 at St. Marks, Alaska. It was a hot 118 yesterday
in Death Valley. In the western USA, the Colorado River is 1,450 miles
long because of winding its way through many states.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is winning the IQ
race. This morning I offered her a treat just because it was her
birthday week. She had not been outside for a bathroom break or we had
not gone away and come home. That is usually when she gets a treat.
She was noticeably puzzled about getting a bonus treat and at first
would not take it. When she finally did, she held it in her mouth and
stared at me. One of these days I want to be as wise as she is. Life
goes on.

...Watching Gustav...

EYES ON THE GULF: While all eyes are on Tropical Storm Gustav this
morning, lets first mention we have a nice quiet weather pattern
through Sunday. Today and tomorrow will feature a good supply of
sunshine with a high in the low 90s. A few widely scattered showers
could show up by Saturday and Sunday, but the days will remain mostly
dry with high continuing in the low 90s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for opening nights of the high school
football season tonight and tomorrow night; the sky will be clear with
kickoff temperatures generally in the mid 80s, dropping into the upper
70s by the fourth quarter. We will guarantee no rain for Saturday's
Alabama/Clemson battle in Atlanta since they are playing in the
Georgia Dome. Light wind, and a temperature of 72. Auburn hosts
Louisiana-Monroe Saturday night at 6:00; just a slight risk of a
shower during the game with temperatures falling from near 90 at
kickoff to 84 by the end of the game. UAB opens Saturday again Tulsa
at 3:00 at Legion Field; the sky will be partly sunny with just a
slight risk of a shower. Temperatures will be in the low 90s at kickoff.

LETS'S LOOK AT GUSTAV: Gustav had a tough day yesterday; sustained
winds dropped to only 45 mph last night due to interaction with
Hispanolia. Today the system should get it's act together again,
becoming a hurricane tonight as it passes just south of Cuba. The
official NHC track has Gustav growing into a major hurricane over the
Gulf of Mexico this weekend, with a path in the direction of the
Central Gulf Coast. We believe the highest risk of landfall is between
Morgan City, Louisiana and Gulf Shores, Alabama sometime late Monday,
Monday night, or Tuesday morning. We stress there is very little skill
in forecasting the intensity of a tropical cyclone several days in
advance, so we simply don't know if Gustav will be a major or minimal
hurricane at the time of landfall. But, residents of the coast need to
prepare for the worst and hope/pray for the best.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: The weather should be generally sunny
along the Gulf Coast from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores Saturday
and Sunday. Wind and rain will increase late Monday or Monday night
with the approach of Gustav; the worst weather will be along and east
of the landfall center. Be aware that evacuations along the immediate
coast could begin as early as Sunday, with the possibility of contra-
flow on interstates and major highways to accommodate north-bound
traffic.

THE IMPACT OVER NORTH ALABAMA: Should Gustav move into Southeast
Louisiana, or coastal Mississippi or Alabama, we will deal with lots
of wind and rain here in North Alabama Tuesday or Wednesday. If Gustav
does make landfall as a major hurricane (category three or higher),
there will be widespread tree and power line damage, much like we saw
during Hurricanes Katrina and Ivan. But, the impact here will all
depend on the point of landfall and the intensity of the system early
next week.

...All Eyes On The Gulf of Mexico...

THE DRYING BEGINS: We deeply appreciated a visit to Alabama by
Tropical Depression Fay. She wet down the entire state and was a great
boost to drought relief. She also caused some problems, because she
tried to overstay her welcome and there were a number of flash flood
events around the state. There was also some damage from a few small
spin-off tornadoes.

Fay has left us, but still causing problems to the northeast of
Alabama. Meanwhile, we will have a few days to dry out. We do not have
any showers or thunderstorms in the forecast until a small risk on
Saturday and Sunday. With more sunshine returning, our high
temperatures will vary between 90 and 92 for Thursday through Sunday.
After that, a great deal depends on Gustav.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We might as well get into a discussion about Gustav
up front. Indications are this is going to be a situation where
everyone around the Gulf of Mexico should pay extremely close
attention, especially by late this weekend. The latest track forecast
on Tropical Storm Gustav brings him northwest through the Gulf of
Mexico to off the Louisiana coast by late in the weekend or early
Monday. As we have mentioned hundreds of times, to try to say where
landfall will be this far ahead is not advisable, but it appears that
somewhere along the North/Central Gulf of Mexico (translation: from
the upper Texas coast all the way to the Alabama coast). The models
seem to point mostly toward the Louisiana coast, but that projection
could change a number of times before landfall. He may be a major
hurricane by the time he makes landfall. We invite you to check often
with the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog. There will be heavy traffic with
numerous updates throughout the life of Gustav.

Meanwhile, the remnants of Fay, over extreme North Tennessee and East
Kentucky today, was causing bunches of problems. A Tornado Watch was
posted for the east half of North Carolina. There were significant
flood problems overnight and this morning. Charlotte was drenched with
7.46 inches of rain overnight, Asheville with 4.04 and 10.30 at
Concord.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Todd Fosey, is a forecaster with the National Weather
Service in Anchorage. He is a native of Birmingham. He tells us that
the first autumn color was showing up at nearby Girwood, Alaska where
he lives. It was 26 degrees in Big Piney, Wyoming this morning. There
are hints all over the place that a change in season is not too far
away. There is an average of 4,200 billion gallons of water that falls
on the USA each day in the form of rain or snow. Did you know that it
takes 300 million gallons of water to produce a single day's supply of
U.S. newsprint?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: As I mentioned yesterday, we do not
celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and holidays—we celebrate weeks
instead of a special day. It so happens that the majority owner's
birthday is today, so she and Little Miss Molly will celebrate all
week together. The majority owner turned down a Milk Bone biscuit that
I offered her this morning. I do have plans to surprise her with a
gift she will like at some point in the next month or so. I told Molly
not to tell. Life goes on.
