...Ida To Move Into Gulf...

Lots to talk about on this Saturday afternoon, including a late season
tropical storm, so let's get started…

IDA: Ida is plying the waters of the northwestern Caribbean on this
November Saturday. Ida has been getting better organized all morning
and Air Force recon just found that it is just below hurricane
intensity. It will likely become a hurricane later today or tonight.
It will pass between the Yucatan and Cuba on Sunday and into the
southern Gulf of Mexico Sunday night. As it moves northward, Ida will
encounter increasing wind shear and dry air from a big trough over the
western Gulf. This will change the storm from a tropical system (with
a warm core) to a powerful extratropical storm (cold core). The storm
will be near the mouth of the Mississippi River by Monday night and
near Mobile Bay late Monday night. Ida will not be a big problem for
coastal sections, but it will bring tropical storm force winds of
45-50 mph to the coast, heavy surf and coastal erosion. It will be
interesting to watch the transition and affects along the coast. Stay
tuned.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Beautiful weather for the Alabama, Auburn and
UAB games today. Lots of sunshine with temperatures in the 67 to 70
degree range during the games. In fact, we are on the verge of a
Perfect Weather Warning for today. Tomorrow looks even a tad better,
so we will go ahead and pull the trigger on the PWW for Sunday, with
temperatures a few degrees warmer and still plenty of sunshine. We
start off in the lower to middle 40s tomorrow and peak in the middle
70s on the thermometer. Beautiful.

IDA'S AFFECTS: There is a second disturbance over the Bay of
Campeche right now. Moisture from it will be shunted northward and
start producing very heavy rain over Louisiana and Mississippi Sunday
night into Monday. That heavy rain will push into Alabama during the
day Monday. Winds will be on the increase as well, averaging 15-30
and occasionally gusting higher Monday and Monday night. Rain will be
likely Monday night across much of the state, with heavy rain
possible. Two to three inches of rain is likely across the middle of
the state, with some 4+ inch amounts over Southwest sections of the
state. High pressure will build in Wednesday, clearing our skies.

REST OF THE WEEK: Thursday and Friday look fine, but we will see
increasing clouds and a few showers as we head into the weekend. Not
seeing a washout for Saturday and Sunday by any stretch, but showers
will be around.

FORECAST FLASHBACK: On the afternoon of the 28th, I got to do the
afternoon forecast package for J.B. Here is a snippet from that
forecast: Watch for a hurricane to come out of the Caribbean,
threatening South Florida around the 11th. It will be interesting to
watch. The GFS model was picking up on something way back then. Not
bad!

WEATHERBRAINS: Our fine run of guests continues this week with famed
severe weather and wind damage expert Tim Marshall on Monday night.
Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 1837: Hawaii seemingly should have lots of
hurricanes. It lies in the middle of warm ocean waters. It is the
same latitude as hurricane-prone areas as the Caribbean Sea and the
Bay of Bengal. But the islands are usually protected in summer by
sprawling high pressure systems that deflect tropical storms away from
Hawaii. On this date, one of the most intense hurricanes ever to
strike Hawaii brought winds of 115 mph to Hilo. 730 people were
missing or killed. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter.com @

...Eyeing Ida...

Great weather this morning for the Vulcan Run in downtown Birmingham.
One of the South's premiere running events, the 10K run has been
continuously run since 1975. It is Birmingham's longest running road
race. With near total sunshine today, temperatures will warm into the
lower 70s at most locations. Look for a few clouds overnight with
lows in the 40-44 range. Tomorrow looks perfect, with a good supply
of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. We are in the process of
issuing a Perfect Weather Watch for Sunday. But by Sunday afternoon,
a trough will be swinging into Texas, and that will allow for rain
chances to return on Monday.

IDA: Ida is back over the northwestern Caribbean after a jaunt over
Nicaragua and Honduras. The center is a little more than 300 miles
south southeast of the northeastern tip of the Yucatan. The system
became a tropical storm overnight over the warm waters of the
Caribbean. As is often the case, there is a great deal of
uncertainty about the amount of strengthening that will occur as the
storm moves steadily north northwestward and grazes the Yucatan Sunday
night, on its way into the southern Gulf. But I would bet that it
does become a hurricane by Sunday afternoon over the Caribbean. Ida
will move into the Central Gulf and likely merge with a frontal
system, becoming extratropical by late Tuesday, when it is just 300
miles south of Mobile. As it encounters increasing shear, it should
weaken. It might even turn south over the Gulf before dissipating.
This is
the forecast. But as we always say with tropical systems, expect the
unexpected.

A NEW WORK WEEK: Moisture will move back into Alabama by late Monday,
bringing increasing rain chances in the Monday night – Tuesday time
frame. The possibility of rain will be affected by the final
disposition of Ida. Stay tuned. For now, the expect about three
quarters of an inch of rain. High pressure will build in by
Wednesday, giving us fair weather for the latter half of the week. It
looks like the nice weather could continue into the weekend, although
forecast confidence drops as we head through time.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama hosts LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium in
Tuscaloosa (2:30 p.m. kickoff). The sky will be sunny with 73 degrees
at kickoff, with temperatures falling back into the 60s by the end of
the game. You can expect very similar weather for the Auburn/Furman
game at Jordan-Hare Stadium; lots of sunshine with temperatures in the
67 to 70 degree range during the game. UAB celebrates homecoming
Saturday, as
the Blazers host Florida Atlantic at Legion Field (1:00 p.m.
kickoff). Expect a sunny sky for that game with a kickoff temperature
near 71 degrees.

WEATHERBRAINS: Rave reviews for episode 197. Dr. Chuck Doswell was
the guest WeatherBrain. Ear his interesting take on severe weather,
the National Weather Service, the warning process and television
meteorologists. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on
iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Record warmth across much of the country as an
autumn warm spell kept most of the country in warmth. Record highs
were set at Birmingham (82F) and Tuscaloosa (85F). Six records were
set across Central Mississippi, including 86F at Jackson. It was 84F
at Fort Smith AR. Other records included 86F at Monroe LA and 83F at
Pensacola FL. The reading of 86F at Tupelo tied the all-time November
high for the station. 86F at Tulsa and 88F at Childress TX were both
records. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian. -

...Bright Weather Hanging On...

RAIN BY EARLY NEXT WEEK: Another bright day across Alabama with
exceptionally great visibility, no clouds—just a bright sun. That
will not last forever, because we are forecasting a transition to rain
by early in the week. Meanwhile, we will enjoy great weather Saturday
and Sunday, although some clouds will move in Sunday night and a
chance of rain by Monday afternoon, becoming more widespread Monday
night and on Tuesday.

HOW MUCH RAIN: Our expected rain is not due directly to Tropical
Storm Ida. Instead, low-pressure will be developing further westward
over the Gulf that will swing some moisture northward into Alabama.
The two-day total for Monday and Tuesday across Central Alabama should
be close to 1 inch. Down south, the rain will be heavier with as much
as 3 inches in the Mobile area and 2.50 at Livingston. We expect some
cooler air to arrive Tuesday night and bring more sunshine for
Veterans Day next Wednesday. See our day-by-day forecast for the
expected temperatures. It will be a bit milder over the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The head coach for every team in Alabama could not
have ordered better weather for the play-off games tonight. A big
extra bonus is the fact that with no rain in a week, the playing
surfaces have had plenty of time to dry out. It is no fun playing in
the mud. Temperatures by kick off this evening will be in the upper
50s and dropping to the upper 40s toward the end of the game. The
weather could not be nicer for college games in the state Saturday.
Auburn will host Furman University for a 12:30 kick off. It should be
about 72 at kick off and in the 60s in the second half. Florida
Atlantic will be at UAB and Georgia Southern at Samford. LSU will be
in Tuscaloosa to play Alabama at 2:30. In all three of those games, it
should be in the low to mid 70s at kick off and about 58 for the final
whistle.

ON THE ROAD: In search of autumn color, we were on the road this
morning into the far north reaches of St. Clair County. In my book,
St. Clair County is among the top 10 in Alabama for natural beauty.
The autumn foliage seems to be muted somewhat and not as brilliant as
last year at this time. On the way back south, we detoured to near
Springville High School north of the city on US-11 and took the narrow
winding road through Washington Valley. It is one of my favorite
drives and it reminds me in some ways of approaching Mt. Cheaha. You
go over hills and valleys and can see distant vistas, occasional
farmhouses and a couple of creeks.

THE STORY OF IDA: Sustained winds down to 35 mph while the center
is over land in Central America. The center was moving through Eastern
Honduras at midday. The center will emerge again turning more NNW
Saturday as it emerges in the NW Caribbean later tonight. Ida is
expected to grow stronger over the Southern Gulf of Mexico, but long-
range projections angles the center more NE toward the big bend of
Florida toward the middle of next week. She will encounter much cooler
waters, so she will have a struggle.

INCOMPLETE SENTENCES: Coolest morning so far this season in Alabama…
upper 20s at Broomtown, Grantley, Muscadine and Scrougeout…heavy
frost in some of those areas…USA low this morning 15 at Leota,
Michigan and 10 below at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On our way north this morning, we
dropped off Little Miss Molly at the Argo Animal Clinic for her PBS
(Puppy Beauty Shop) appointment. The minute we got in the car, she
started shaking all over, but on the way home later today, the closer
she gets to home the more vicious will be her tail wagging. Our early
morning walk was without incident for the second morning in a row. No
sounds from anywhere, although Molly did sit down overlooking the
backyard where Dino lives and cried for him to come out. Life goes
on....

...Rain By Early Next Week...

ANOTHER SUNNY DAY: This will be our 6th consecutive day with no rain
for almost all of Alabama, and our dry spell should last through the
weekend with a good supply of sunshine each day. Today's high will be
close to 70, followed by low 70s tomorrow, and mid 70s Sunday. A few
scattered clouds could show up by Sunday afternoon, but the low levels
will remain dry and there is no chance of rain.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For a change we have some great weather to discuss
this week. For tonight's high school playoff games, the sky will be
clear with a kickoff temperature near 64 degrees, dropping into the
50s during the second half. Tomorrow, Alabama hosts LSU at Bryant-
Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (2:30 p.m. kickoff). The sky will be sunny
with 71 degrees at kickoff, with temperatures falling back into the
60s during the second half. Very similar weather for the Auburn/Furman
game at Jordan-Hare Stadium; lots of sunshine with temperatures in the
67 to 70 degree range during the game. UAB celebrates homecoming
Saturday, as the Blazers host Florida Atlantic at Legion Field (1:00
p.m. kickoff). A sunny sky for that game with a kickoff temperature
near 70 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: A disturbance in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico will move
into the Deep South early next week, and will bring the chance of a
shower as early as Monday afternoon. Showers will be more likely
Monday night into Tuesday with some risk of a thunderstorm as well.
The rest of the week looks relatively dry with comfortable temperatures.

EYES ON IDA: Ida weakened to a tropical depression last night as the
circulation center moved into Nicaragua. The system will emerge back
over the water today, and Ida is expected to strengthen again over the
weekend, as it moves slowly northward toward the Yucatan Channel. The
forecast track has Ida in the central part of the Gulf of Mexico by
Tuesday night of next week. There is a chance that Ida would grow into
a significant hurricane at some point over the Northwest Caribbean or
the far southern Gulf, but sea water temperatures remain cool over the
northern Gulf, so the farther north this one goes, the weaker it will
get. Everybody in the southern part of Florida will need to monitor
the progress of Ida in coming days; for now we don't expect a major
impact on our state.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We
encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply
cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30.
And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to
the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and
no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good
seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Three More Nice Days...

THE ALABAMA STORY: As advertised, a new supply of cool very dry air
spread across Alabama late yesterday and overnight. For that reason,
these low temperatures were recorded this morning by 33/40 Skywatchers:

33 Cottondale
34 Scrougeout (with light frost)
36 Concord/Hueytown

This new supply of air is so dry that the dew point was as low as 28
this afternoon in Haleyville and Decatur and 25 in Alexander City. A
high-pressure area will be drifting across the mid-south overnight.
This leads me to believe that by sunrise tomorrow someone in the NE
Alabama valleys will report a low of 28 or 30. Across Central Alabama,
the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston area, we are pegging the morning
low at about 37.

We look for three more model autumn days. I was out for a short walk
well before sunrise today and the scene that Mother Nature painted was
awesome. The early morning silhouette of the surrounding hills and
trees would have made a great painting for Thomas Kinkade. There will
be a bit of cloudiness showing up on Sunday as the warming trend
becomes more pronounced.

OUR NEXT RAIN: We have not had a drop so far in November, but we do
expect some rain to spread into the area Monday with the better chance
Monday afternoon and Monday night. The rain will persist into Tuesday
and maybe Wednesday. Some of our guidance suggests as much as 1 inch
of rain over that period of time in Livingston and over 1 inch in
Mobile. Some of that will depend on the future track of Tropical Storm
Ida.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Ida was demoted to a Tropical Storm at
midday as the center moved over land into Eastern Nicaraugua. The
center should stay over land until emerging into the extreme NW
Caribbean Saturday morning. Meanwhile, it will drop to a depression.
By daybreak Monday, the center will be the NW tip of the Yucatan and
back to Tropical Storm strength. Projections beyond that indicate the
center will move northward into the South/Central Gulf of Mexico. The
water temperature over the Southern Gulf is still fairly warm, but
over the Northern Gulf the seas surface temperature has cooled as low
as the mid 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Absolutely perfect weather for high school play off
games tonight and Friday night and, for a
change, the games will be on a dry field. Kick-off temperatures will
be in the 60s dropping into the 50s. On Saturday, LSU will be in
Tuscaloosa to play Alabama with a 2:30 kick off on CBS. It should be
in the low 70s at kick off and in the 60s during the second half.
Almost identically the same weather for the Auburn/Furman game in
Auburn. UAB will have homecoming Saturday at Legion Field playing
Florida Atlantic. Close to 70 at kick off and in the 60s during the
second half.

ROAMING: 8-foot waves over the South Gulf of Mexico due partially to
Ida…97 at Mesa, Arizona—the hottest yesterday…USA cold spots this
morning 14 at Kremling, Colorado and 8 below zero at Anaktuvik Pass,
Alaska…it was 26 below at the northernmost weather station in North
America at Alert at the north tip of Canada…at the opposite end of
the world, it was 59 below at Vostock, Antarctica where it is now
springtime.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Every time I step out the door with the
leash in my hand holding back Little Miss Molly I never know what to
expect. Strangely enough, on our morning walk today, it was totally
uneventful. Molly walked slowly for the entire half-mile, took her
time going to the bathroom, we did not see anybody, did not hear a
single bird, no dogs or cats and no sound of distant barking dogs. But
things will change—you can bet on that. I plan a World Series game
with her this afternoon. Live goes on.

...Another Sunny Day...

A LITTLE COOLER: A fresh surge of cool, dry air moved into Alabama
late yesterday, and we project daytime temperatures to be about 5 to 8
degrees cooler today. Most communities will see a high in the mid to
upper 60s, and like other days this week we will expect a good supply
of sunshine. Tonight will be the coldest night this week with a clear
sky and light wind. Most places will wind up in the upper 30s at
daybreak tomorrow, with a light freeze possible for the colder valleys
across North Alabama. Then, we warm back into the 67 to 70 degree
range tomorrow afternoon with a sunny sky.

OUR WEEKEND: Afternoons will be a tad warmer with highs in the low to
mid 70s. No rain over the weekend, although a few clouds could invade
from the south by Sunday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For a change we have some great weather to discuss
this week. For tomorrow night's high school
playoff games, the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near
64 degrees, dropping into the 50s during the second half. Saturday,
Alabama hosts LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (2:30 p.m.
kickoff). The sky will be sunny with 73 degrees at kickoff, with
temperatures falling back into the 60s during the second half. Very
similar weather for the Auburn/Furman game at Jordan-Hare Stadium;
lots of sunshine with temperatures in the 69 to 72 degree range during
the game. UAB celebrates homecoming Saturday, as the Blazers host
Florida Atlantic at Legion Field (1:00 p.m. kickoff). A sunny sky for
that game with a kickoff temperature near 71 degrees.

TROPICS NOT DEAD YET: Tropical Storm Ida formed yesterday in the
Southwest Caribbean; the system is packing sustained winds of 65 mph,
and it will move into Central America this morning with weakening
expected over land. However, Ida will emerge back into the Caribbean
during the day north of Honduras, and it could become a tropical storm
again as the water remains warm in the deep tropics. The forecast
track from the National Hurricane Center has Ida moving into the
southern Gulf of Mexico early next week as a strong tropical storm.
The good news is that sea water temperatures are pretty cool around
the Gulf Coast (65 degrees as of last night at the Dauphin Island Sea
Lab), so if a tropical system happens to get into the Gulf, most
likely it won't be a big threat to the northern coast due to the
cooler ocean temperatures. The 2009 hurricane season will end on
November 30.

NEXT WEEK: Moisture will increase, and we will bring in a chance of
showers Monday and Tuesday. The best upper dynamics will remain north
of Alabama, so for now we won't expect the rain to be especially
heavy, and no severe weather problems are anticipated. Afternoon highs
will be close to 70 much of the week as the colder Canadian air will
be trapped north of Alabama.

...The Great Weather Goes On...

NEW SUPPLY OF FRESH AIR ARRIVING: There was another cool front poised
over Arkansas this afternoon. There were no clouds on either side of
the front. For Alabama, it will give us a gift of a fresh supply of
cool dry air that will extend our model weather for several more days.
We also believe that Friday morning will be our chilliest with a low
across Central Alabama around 38. We all know that on nights like that
the NE Alabama valleys are colder. The simple reason for that is that
on clear still nights the ground cools quickly, which in turn cools
the air near the ground. Cold air is always heavier, so it seeks to
find the lowest level possible. Bottom line: look for some low
temperatures Friday morning in the 33 to 35-degree range in the
traditional cold spots. We had some lows in the 30s early today. A few
samples:

34 in Gaylesvile
37 Pinson, Hamilton, Ellisville
38 Centreville, Livingston, Jasper

HOW MANY MORE SUNNY DAYS: We see no reason why you cannot get an
overdose of sun all the way through Saturday
and most of Sunday. Some clouds will move in Sunday night. We will
have a detailed football forecast starting in the editions tomorrow,
but it looks great for high school playoff games Thursday night and
Friday night and for the in-state college games on Saturday. I believe
there are at least 6 daytime college games being played in Alabama
Saturday, including both Alabama and Auburn.

NEXT RAIN: Our beloved weather models have been arguing a bit on this
subject and doing a little flip-flopping. Latest model guidance points
to Monday and Tuesday as being the best days for rain. We also must
look to the south where a new tropical depression could be moving up
into the Central Gulf of Mexico and spreading some moisture north and
NW into Alabama.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Yes, indeed, we have a new tropical depression and
the National Hurricane Center was sending a
plane to investigate this afternoon. It is expected to become a
tropical storm later this afternoon and then continue to grow stronger
until landfall. The center was located about 100 miles east of
Bluefields, Nicaragua. It was moving WNW at 7 and will be near the
east coast of Nicaragua tonight. By Monday morning, the center could
be over the NW Caribbean SE of the Yucatan Peninsula.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Here we go in incomplete sentences to save
space. 28 below in Arctic Village, Alaska this morning…Fairbanks had
3 below with 4 inches of snow…lower 48 lows included 14 at Kremling,
Colorado and also at Big Piney and Pinedale, Wyoming…hottest
yesterday 98 at East Mesa, Arizona in the metro Phoenix area.

MY TINYC ORNER OF THE WORLD: I know I have a semi-out-of-control
imagination, but so help me there is a new dog in
our community that I believe can sing. He lives on the other side of
the hedgerow. When Molly and I walk, his bark is a long drawn out howl
that lasts 15-30 seconds. It sounded to me like he was singing
Tumbling Tumble Weeds. Molly took note and stopped to listen. Maybe
she thought the dog was singing Get Along Little Doggie. She normally
does not pay much attention to other dogs barking unless it is Dino.
Always something interesting…this morning an adult butterfly kept
buzzing me. I finally told him to get lost. I have never had that
happen before. On a sad note, we also saw a juvenile earthworm on the
track that did not make it through the night because of the cold.
Mother Nature is the boss, but life goes on according to her
instructions.

...Dry Through The Weekend...

MILD DAYS, COOL NIGHTS: More fabulous fall weather is the story for
Alabama through the weekend. A reinforcing shot of cool, dry air will
arrive tonight, pushing afternoon highs down about 7 degrees. We will
be in the low 70s today, with mid 60s likely tomorrow. Friday morning
will be chilly with a low in the upper 30s; some of the colder valleys
will be close to freezing
at daybreak Friday. But, we will warm right back up into the upper 60s
Friday afternoon.

An upper ridge will nose into Alabama from the south over the weekend,
and that will bring warmer daytime temperatures.
Looks like we will enjoy highs in the low to mid 70s both Saturday and
Sunday with a good supply of sunshine both days. We will have the
specific football forecasts tomorrow, but the weather looks nearly
perfect for the high school football playoff games Friday night, and
the college games in the state on Saturday. It will be nice not having
to dodge raindrops.

NEXT WEEK: Rain will return to Alabama next week, but inconsistent
computer model data is making for a low confidence forecast. We will
mention a chance of showers as early as Tuesday, but the better chance
of rain will most likely hold off until Wednesday, and possibly
Thursday. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the low 70s next week,
with warmer nights due to a moist airmass.

TROPICS: The 2009 tropical weather season is down to just a few
remaining weeks, and this will turn to be one of the most inactive
seasons on record. We are watching a disturbed area of weather over
the far western Caribbean, which has some potential to become a
tropical storm in coming days. This one could move harmlessly into
Central America, or move north and grow stronger. If by chance this
gets into the Gulf of Mexico, we don't expect a problem up this way
since water temperatures are very cool near the coast; the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab reported a sea water temperature of 65 degrees
yesterday afternoon. Most late season tropical storms and hurricanes
form in the deep tropics, and rarely make landfall on the U.S. coast.

EXTREMES: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Rialto, California
with 98 degrees; coldest was Arctic Village, Alaska with 26 degrees
below zero. That is one of the coldest temperatures so far this fall
in Alaska.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: A total of 19 tornadoes recorded in the
southeast ahead of fast moving cold front. One tornado narrowly missed
a high school football game in McComb MS. Another tornado F3 tornado
struck a school at New Site MS just as it was dismissing. Alert
teachers rushed the students back into hallways just in time. One
woman is killed in Lee, Florida and sixteen people are injured in
Alabama; most of the tornadoes in our state were over the northwest
corner of the state. Meanwhile, McAllen, Texas soared to a high of 102
degrees.

...More Sunny, Dry Weather...

WE HAVE NO COMPLAINTS: About the weather, that is. We feel like 99.99
percent of Alabamians are glad to see this weather after long bouts
with wet weather over the last several months. We may be wrong on that
estimate, because we do have a core audience that never gets tired of
daytime temperatures above 90. Count me out of that group, because my
ideal low and high each day would be 36/66 if I had control of the
weather.

Our five-day forecast is a bit unusual, because it uses only one word
each day all the way through Saturday. That word is sunny. Nights will
be clear and cool. We just had a full moon and when I was still in the
National Weather Service, one night I came very close to issuing a
forecast that said: for tonight mostly moony and cool. Fortunately I
changed my mind because that would have brought a rash of negative
reaction.

Our nights will still be cool, but afternoons comfortable with low
humidity and bright sunshine. A big plus to this type autumn weather
is the great visibility. Little or no haze and it seems like you could
see 50 miles or more if we had some mountains high enough to see that
far. We should get another surge of cooler air about Thursday and that
could give us some low temperatures Friday morning in the upper 30s
with some scattered frost in the normally colder pockets.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are jumping the gun a bit, but it looks like
ideal weather for the high school play off games Friday night. It also
looks great for in state college games on Saturday with most highs in
the lower 70s. We will start a specific football forecast in the
Thursday morning editions.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Would you believe that we have an interesting
little tropical situation? The disturbance is pressing right up
against the east coast of Costa Rica, but it shows some promise of
development. It is expected to move little over the next day or so.
The wind upstairs has become favorable for continued development. The
NHC thinks there is a decent chance that it could become a tropical
cyclone during the next two days. It will spread heavy rain over parts
of Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. There does not seem
much chance for this nervous weather area to get into the Gulf of
Mexico, although not impossible. Sea surface temperatures in the Gulf
have cooled somewhat, which would be a negative. The water temperature
in the Middle Gulf is 81. It is only 78 135 miles south of Pensacola
and 71 about 30 miles south of the Mississippi coast.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Gradually getting colder and colder in Alaska.
It was 22 below zero this morning at Circle Hot Springs with an 8-inch
snow cover. Dry Creek, Alaska has 12 inches of snow. It was 23 below
zero in Arctic Village. Way down here, where 48 states are close
neighbors, it was 14 at Kremmling, Colorado. Shreveport has received
54 inches of rain this year—a foot above average. In NE Alabama,
Scrougeout has received 70.07 inches of rain so far this year and
85.43 during the last 12 months.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The autumn foliage is getting prettier
and prettier all along the walking track, which is one-half mile long
and one that Little Miss Molly thinks she owns. I still have not taken
a drive up Washington Valley in St. Clair County where the color is
always awesome. Yesterday afternoon at the far end of the walking
track, little Dino and his grandpa slipped up on us and it was a wild
play session all the way back down the track. Dino and Molly chased
each other in circles, reverses and constant entangling the leashes.
They had fun. It was a wild time for us. Life goes on.

...A String of Sunny Days...

A REAL CHANCE TO DRY OUT: Considering the current dry period started
this past Sunday, and we are projecting no rain through Monday of next
week, that is an period with 8 consecutive days of dry weather for our
state. The last time we enjoyed this kind of dry spell was back in
late June and early July, when we had no measurable rain from June 16
through July 4. And, this time temperatures will be much more
comfortable. For the rest of the week, we are projecting highs in the
67 to 70 degree range, with lows mostly in the 40s. Looks like the
coldest morning will come at daybreak Friday with upper 30s are
possible with some frost for the colder spots. The blue sky days
combined with the fall colors, which are approaching their peak, will
set the stage for a fantastic autumn week in Alabama.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Afternoon temperatures should be a little warmer
Saturday and Sunday, with highs up in the low to mid 70s along with a
sunny sky Saturday and Sunday. There is no significant chance of rain
this weekend (for a change). For now, it looks like the next decent
chance of rain will come around Tuesday of next week.

RAIN SCORECARD: We can enjoy this dry period knowing we have a big
rain surplus for the year. Birmingham's rain total for the year is
60.23", giving us a current surplus of 15.08". If we don't get
another drop of rain between now and December 31, we will still have a
surplus of 5.24" for 2009. And, we all know we will have plenty of
rain events before the year is over.

FALL TORNADO SEASON: The southern U.S. is one of the few places in the
world with two distinct severe weather seasons. Our fall tornado
season comes during the month of November and the first half of
December. While we won't have any problems this week, we will be
watching for potential severe weather set-ups during the latter half
of the month.

EXTREMES: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Rialto, California
with 94; coldest was Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska with 17 degrees below zero.

Just show up, but get there early for a good
seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Amazing Turn Around...

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED: We needed a distinct break from wet
weather and we got it in a big way. September and October were
extremely wet. So much so that crops were eventually damaged from
excessive rain amounts. As of today, Birmingham has received 60.23
inches of rain so far this year—an amazing excess of over 15 inches.

So now, our weather does a complete 180 and we are looking for an
extended period of clear dry weather with cool nights and pleasant
daytime temperatures. There is a good chance that we will go all this
week with no chance of rain. There may be a slight chance early next
week. This will give us a great chance to dry out and let swollen
streams decline. It was cool across the state this morning. Some of
the lowest temperatures were around 34 in NE Alabama. The next several
nights will be cool with lows generally in the low to mid 40s.

EXCEPTIONAL VISIBILITY: Every weather station in the USA reports
visibility every hour. In earlier days, the hourly weather
observations were taken by humans, however most of them are now
automated. I remember when I was in the USWB that often Colorado
Springs would report visibility 100 miles. They had a good view of the
front range of the Rockies. The most we could report in Birmingham was
15+ because we could only report twice the distance to the farthest
landmark. Often it was much greater. For example, today I believe you
could see at least 60 miles.

AROUND THE USA: Another weak front will push into our area Tuesday
morning, but it will simply restock us with dry air and good weather.
Another interesting point: this morning you could fly all the way from
Birmingham to San Diego and see no clouds. The coldest in the USA this
morning was 16 at Big Piney and Pinedale, Wyoming and 16 below at
Arctic Village, Alaska. Hottest Sunday was 94 at Rialto, California.

STORM ALERT XTREME: That comes up on Saturday, November 14 at the
BJCC during the annual Birmingham
International Auto Show. You can get some excellent Skywarn training.
It starts at 9:30 and ends at 3:30. It is completely free and everyone
that attends also can have free admission to the Auto Show.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure wish you could have seen Little
Miss Molly when all the trick-or-treaters came by. We had about 30
youngsters during the evening ringing the doorbell. For some strange
reason, Little Miss Molly thinks she should be the best friend and
guardian of every little kid. She especially likes children. I finally
had to put the leash on her and hold her back just inside the door
while the majority owner dished out the goodies. We did let her just
outside the door once to greet a little girl who wanted to pet her,
otherwise she would have been jumping all over them and probably
frightening them. Molly was a nervous wreck when it was all over. Last
night she jumped a rabbit just outside our house and came close to
jerking me off my feet. Yesterday, on a morning walk, I could see much
further than she can and I noticed the CR (Community Rabbit) had grown
quite a bit and was almost old enough to go to college. He was sitting
alongside the walking track soon after sunrise. He saw me long before
Miss Molly could see him and he jumped back into the hedgerow like a
kangaroo. No telling what we could find in that hedgerow—all kinds of
birds and we know of one hawk. Life goes on. Little Miss Molly never
lets us have a dull moment.

...Nice November Week Ahead...

Sunday was a beautiful day across Central Alabama, with lots of
brilliant sunshine. Temperatures were just slightly below normal,
with highs in the middle and upper 60s. Lows last night dropped into
the 30s and lower 40s. A few spots likely experienced a little frost.

NICE RUN OF WEATHER: After the fourth wettest September and the
fourth wettest October in Birmingham history, an extended period of
dry weather would actually feel nice. It looks like we may see that
over the next few days.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: Upper air charts this morning show a broad
trough over the eastern half of the United States, with a broad trough
over the West. At the surface, high pressure dominates much of the
country. The trough over the East looks like that it will deepen as
we head through the week, as disturbances swing through it. This
means no significant changes in our weather through the weekend, as no
deep moisture works into the area.

THE FORECAST: The northwesterly flow aloft, associated with the
upper trough, will permit at least a couple of reinforcing shots of
cooler air during the week. Sunny today, with a few clouds tonight
and Tuesday morning as a disturbance passes to the north. Sunny to
partly cloudy skies will prevail through the week ahead, with seasonal
temperatures: highs 65-70, lows 42-49.

IDA, IS THAT YOU? A strong non-tropical low is located a few hundred
miles east of Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center believes there
is a high probability that this system could become either a sub-
tropical or tropical storm today. If it does, it will be named Ida.
It should recurve east of Bermuda, and does not pose any threat to the
U.S. mainland. We will be keeping an eye on the southwestern Gulf,
where disturbed weather is projected to be this week by the GFS model.

WEATHERBRAINS: Get ready for Dr. Chuck Doswell to make an appearance
on WeatherBrains tonight. The show will be
available on WeatherBrains.com before midnight. You can also
subscribe on iTunes. Next week, wind engineer and severe weather
expert Tim Marshall will join the panel. Follow our tweets about the
show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: 27.24 inches of rain fell at Hilo, HI on the
1st and 2nd, easily breaking their record for rainfall in a 24 hour
period. The previous record was 22.30 inches, on February 19-20,
1979. 37 inches of rain fell at Kapapala Ranch on the big island of
Hawaii, 22.25 inches of it occurring in just 6 hours. This just
missed breaking the all-time 24 hour rainfall record for the island
state, which is 38 inches at Kilauea Sugar Plantation on Kauai in
January 1956. The event happened when the remnants of a tropical
system passing near the islands led to thunderstorms that towered high
in the atmosphere, an unusual event with the typical trade wind
inversion. The storms hovered over the Big Island, dumping the
massive rain.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The mercury soared to 85F at the Birmingham
airport to establish a new record for the date. In nearby Pinson, the
high reached 88F, also a record for the date. The readings
represented marks for the highest temperatures ever for so late in the
season at both locations. The 85F at Birmingham was a new November
record.

...Nice Fall Afternoon...

I have a love-hate relationship with the semi-annual time change. When
I was a kid, I hated the fall back because it limited afternoon
playtime. Plus it meant we were slipping deeper into winter, also
known as anti-summer. But as I have grown old, I have really learned
to appreciate the extra hour of sleep the government returns to us. I
also like getting the model output an hour earlier.

ON TO THE WEATHER: Pretty simple forecast over the next seven days. On
the weather maps this afternoon, we find a broad upper trough over the
Mississippi Valley. The axis of this trough will slide slowly
eastward, to a position over Alabama Monday evening. At the surface, a
broad ridge of cool high pressure extends from eastern Canada through
the Ohio Valley and into the Deep South. This will give us another
clear, cool and calm night overnight tonight with lows in the 40s.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s to near 70.
A disturbance passing by to the north will produce a few clouds late
Monday night and early Tuesday. Otherwise, the week will be clear to
partly cloudy, with lows ranging between 39-44 and highs between
68-73. It looks like our next chance of rain will come after the
weekend as high pressure remains in control of Alabama's weather.

TORNADO STATISTICS: So far this year, there have been 1,223 tornadoes
reported. The actual amount will probably be about 10% less than that
when the final statistics are tabulated. We will likely see another
50-75 tornadoes by the end of the year, totaling up to about
1,150-1,200. This will be about 25% less than the 1,691 measured in
2008. There have been 22 tornado fatalities so far this year. If we
can make it through December 31st with no more additional deaths, it
will be the second lowest annual death toll since 1950. Alabama has
had one tornado fatality, in an April 19th storm in Marshall County.
TROPICS: A disturbance some 700 miles or so east of Bermuda shows
signs of becoming a subtropical storm. If it does do so, it will be
called Ida. Elsewhere in the tropical Atlantic, things are quiet.

WEATHERBRAINS: Monday night's show will feature renowned severe
weather expert Chuck Doswell. Discussions are likely to turn to severe
weather research, storm chasing and the warning process. If he is
anything, Chuck is opinionated. Listen to the show atwww.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1848: James Espy, one of the leading weather
authorities of his day was working on the nationwide network of
weather observers that the Smithsonian's Joseph Henry was
establishing. Espy was known as the "Storm King" because of his
treatise "Philosophy of Storms." On this date, Espy was
distributing a circular through Congress seeking volunteer weather
observers across the country. Response was tremendous. By the start of
the Civil War, Henry would have over 600 observers. In 1850, Henry
established a pictorial map in Washington DC so that the public could
view the observations collected each day. The weather map became one
of Washington's most popular meeting spots.

...Sunshine Returns...

Did you set your clocks back an hour last night? If not, you are
going to be real early for your activities this morning. So that's
why no one was at church when you got there….

ONE OF WETTEST OCTOBERS EVER: Brian Peters has been diligently
tracking October 2009's climb up the rankings of wettest Octobers
ever in Birmingham. He shows it is the 4th wettest October ever, with
7.88 inches. The NWS says it ranks as the third wettest October. The
State Climatologist page agrees with Brian. We are waiting on an
official review. We are already the 24th wettest year ever. As Brian
pointed out, if we just have normal rainfall between now and the end
of the year, 2009 will likely finish as the sixth wettest year ever in
Birmingham history.

WELCOME TO NOVEMBER: Skies cleared across Alabama late Saturday
afternoon, setting the stage for a clear and cool night. A little
patchy fog is likely in spots thanks to the moist ground and excellent
radiational cooling conditions. With mostly sunny skies today,
temperatures will warm into the middle and upper 60s. Nearly perfect
weather for the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega.

FINE RUN OF WEATHER: Today will be a preview of a fine run of weather
that will be with us through at least Thursday. Afternoon
temperatures will slowly warm to near Our winds will become
southeasterly again by Thursday and moisture levels will start to
slowly rise, but only isolated showers are expected through the weekend.

VOODOOLAND: After next weekend, a fast moving cold front will bring
chilly air to Alabama by the 10th. That should be a chilly week with
plenty of fair skies. No real major rain systems are seen on the
horizon over the next two weeks.

TROPICS: The Tropical Atlantic is deader than a doornail. The GFS
and other global models show no signs of tropical development over the
next two weeks.

MARION COUNTY TORNADO: The tornado that touched down near Thorn Hill
in Marion County late Friday afternoon was rated as an F1 by the NWS.
It had a path length of 2.8 miles and a width of 200 yards. Four
homes, three outbuildings were damaged.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's the podcast that's all about weather. Spend
an entertaining hour each week with some of the big hitters in
weather. People like Tom Skilling, Tim Samaras, Bill Read, Stu Ostro,
Eve Gruntfest and Bob Henson. This week, it is legendary severe
weather researcher Chuck Doswell. Talked to Keith Blackwell, tropical
expert from the University of South Alabama this week. He will be on
the show soon. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870: At 7:35 a.m., United States Army Signal Corps
observers at 24 sites around the country simultaneously made weather
reports and transmitted them to Washington where a national weather
map would be drawn. This started the process of sending out weather
reports by telegraph to metropolitan newspapers. This would be the
beginning of our present day National Weather Service. Follow my
weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
