...Nice Fall Afternoon...

I have a love-hate relationship with the semi-annual time change. When
I was a kid, I hated the fall back because it limited afternoon
playtime. Plus it meant we were slipping deeper into winter, also
known as anti-summer. But as I have grown old, I have really learned
to appreciate the extra hour of sleep the government returns to us. I
also like getting the model output an hour earlier.

ON TO THE WEATHER: Pretty simple forecast over the next seven days. On
the weather maps this afternoon, we find a broad upper trough over the
Mississippi Valley. The axis of this trough will slide slowly
eastward, to a position over Alabama Monday evening. At the surface, a
broad ridge of cool high pressure extends from eastern Canada through
the Ohio Valley and into the Deep South. This will give us another
clear, cool and calm night overnight tonight with lows in the 40s.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s to near 70.
A disturbance passing by to the north will produce a few clouds late
Monday night and early Tuesday. Otherwise, the week will be clear to
partly cloudy, with lows ranging between 39-44 and highs between
68-73. It looks like our next chance of rain will come after the
weekend as high pressure remains in control of Alabama's weather.

TORNADO STATISTICS: So far this year, there have been 1,223 tornadoes
reported. The actual amount will probably be about 10% less than that
when the final statistics are tabulated. We will likely see another
50-75 tornadoes by the end of the year, totaling up to about
1,150-1,200. This will be about 25% less than the 1,691 measured in
2008. There have been 22 tornado fatalities so far this year. If we
can make it through December 31st with no more additional deaths, it
will be the second lowest annual death toll since 1950. Alabama has
had one tornado fatality, in an April 19th storm in Marshall County.
TROPICS: A disturbance some 700 miles or so east of Bermuda shows
signs of becoming a subtropical storm. If it does do so, it will be
called Ida. Elsewhere in the tropical Atlantic, things are quiet.

WEATHERBRAINS: Monday night's show will feature renowned severe
weather expert Chuck Doswell. Discussions are likely to turn to severe
weather research, storm chasing and the warning process. If he is
anything, Chuck is opinionated. Listen to the show atwww.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1848: James Espy, one of the leading weather
authorities of his day was working on the nationwide network of
weather observers that the Smithsonian's Joseph Henry was
establishing. Espy was known as the "Storm King" because of his
treatise "Philosophy of Storms." On this date, Espy was
distributing a circular through Congress seeking volunteer weather
observers across the country. Response was tremendous. By the start of
the Civil War, Henry would have over 600 observers. In 1850, Henry
established a pictorial map in Washington DC so that the public could
view the observations collected each day. The weather map became one
of Washington's most popular meeting spots.
